Everyone in George's family is so embarrassing. His mom can't cook, his sister is constantly making kissy faces to her phone, and his brother's wardrobe consists of nothing but costumes. To top it off, George's dad is known for going outdoors in his underwear! Will Family Night at school reveal all of their quirks? Or will George want to hide under his desk to avoid them?
Embarrassing George is a story about a kid's inner view about his family and their eccentricities that make him squirm when he is out with them in public. As a result when he is told he has to take them to Family Night he just doesn't want to do it.
Although we can all relate to embarrassing family members I found the characters in the book to be just a bit more stereotypical than usual. Mom cannot seem to cook to save her life but no one steps in to takeover that chore who may do better and of course she becomes irate that no one likes her cooking, especially on the night her husband even tends for a cooked hot dog instead. George's sister is your stereotypical teen making duck-lips while constantly on her phone for facetalk, videos or selfies while that is a "typical teen girl" thing explained by mom (I didn't do that when I was young) and his brother just is being a typical creative young child dressed in his favorite outfit. And Dad throughout the whole book doesn't even look like he can stand being with his whole family.
The artwork is fairly decent just your basic colors and format while at least the characters aren't really cartoonish until you come to the small hamster in the end.
All in all it was a decent message but provided within quite a horrible presentation....
I think this book is great for all ages. Even at 50 years old, I enjoyed it.
What I liked was the realism. It was honest about the quirks the different people had and that even the protagonist had his own flaws. Best of all, the author reminds us that it's not only okay, but it is normal.
The illustrations are lovely. They do a great job bringing the story to life. It offers a level for middle grade readers that is fun but not childish.
I definitely recommend this book. It has a great message and it is entertaining!
Every family can be embarrassing, and George isn’t thrilled for anyone to meet his. What will happen when they show up for his back to school night? Love the ending!
