London Kelly is in love with her best friend and has been for years. Too bad he’s an adorably clueless idiot who a) just doesn’t see what everyone else sees and b) abides by the rule of ‘don’t screw the crew’s sisters, daughters, or exes.' And since London’s dad is his fire captain, that puts her firmly in the do not touch category. Then one night, London decides to throw caution to the wind and kisses him, finding her unequivocally placed in the friend zone. That's when London decides that maybe it’s time to move on. Except fate decides to have the last laugh, calling Luca to the scene of a fire at the very same restaurant where London is on a secret blind date, bringing him face-to-face with the reality that he could lose his girl. Suddenly all bets are off. Besides, bending the rules isn’t the same as breaking them… right?

I'm a sucker for best friends to lovers books, and this one was no different. I really enjoyed London and Luca's story, and it was a fun and easy read. The world building in this series is great, and I love reading about all these characters. While I was frustrated at Luca, there was no unnecessary angst or drama, and this was a just a lovely read. I was disappointed with a couple of things though, and thats what lowered my review from a 5 star down to the 4-4.5 stars - in terms of Scotty mostly (don't want to spoil for anyone, but I'm sure if you've read all the books in the series you'll know what I'm referring to after reading this).
Overall a wonderful read and I look forward to what comes next from BJ Harvey.
It is always a a sad day when we come to the end of a beloved series.
And when that book is a friends-to-more story, well, cover me in butter and put me in the oven, because I am done for!
Luca is the last Rossi to get their HEA, this time with his best friend London.
But gotta say, Luca really is a bit of an idiot hahaha. Took him long enough to remove head from sphincter to see what was right in front of him all along.
I loved how everyone else around him could see what was happening, but not him.
My heart hurt for London as her heart couldn't let go, no matter how hard she tried. The heart truly wanted what the heart wanted this time.
I can understand both of them now wanting to ruin their best-friendship, but boy did they waste some time together that would have been amazing.
The one thing that I did miss in this book from the whole series - some stuff with Scotty. I mean, Scotty still doesn't know hahah but there was stuff that happened with him that I was huh? Did I miss something? When did that happen?
But that could just be a me thing!
A satisfying conclusion to the First Responders series, and I look forward to what Ms Harvey brings us next.
I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review, all thoughts are my own.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Sadly it was the last book in the series though I did not feel like I missed out on anything.
My favourite trope is friends to lovers and this one did not disappoint, I absolutely loved London and Luca though I definitely felt like I wanted to give poor Luca a huge nudge.
Loved the storyline and the setting, who doesn’t love a hot firefighter.
I definitely recommend this book, and while you are at it grab the series.
Rule Bender is the 4th and final book in the Chicago First Responders series, and follows best friends, London and Luca
this was a really sweet and easy read about a woman inlove with her bestfriend but the man is an oblivious idiot (lol)... but their friendship was quite adorable, and i adored their comfortableness and witty banter with each other
i just didn't fully enjoy the moment of revelation Luca had, when he realized he was actually inlove with London. it seemed kind of bland regarding the way London loves him...
but overall this was a really fun story with no unnecessary or dramatic plot twists, which is a major plus :)
Rule Bender is a sweet best friends to lovers, age-gap romance that will make you feel warm and fuzzy. B.J. Harvey tells us the story of two best friends, London and Luca, but when the feelings start to change, will they take a leap of love and give it a try? When London decides that she cannot hold back her feelings anymore, she makes a bold move and kisses Luca. Unfortunately, the feeling was not reciprocated and she was left embarrassed and hurt but never let it show. Luca is a firefighter that works for London's father and there is a can't date the boss's daughter rule. Fast forward a few months, some more time together, all their family and friends telling Luca that he is an idiot and that they can see that there is something there that is much more than friendship, just maybe that might wake Luca up. Maybe the date that she saw London with Dr. Perfect Brock and what he says to Luca opens his eyes to what is really in front of him, the perfect woman for him in every way. The only problem is that he has been telling her or making her feel that they will never be more than friends, he will not break the boss's daughter rule as well as he is worried that it will affect their friendship might fall apart and he couldn't live with losing her. He now has a job and a half to prove to her that he sees her now as the woman that he loves and wants to be with. Will his plan work or is it too late?
I loved the relationship between London and Luca. They are always there for one another and definitely very protective of one another. The underlining banter is fantastic and the ribbing that Luca gets from everyone is fantastic. Their story is wonderful to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you are looking for a terrific summer read, I highly suggest picking up Rule Bender.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed this addition to the Chicago First Responders series. The storyline is fun, romantic and will melt your heartstrings. The author gave us a well written storyline with fun relatable characters. A few of which we’ve met before in previous books and it’s so fun to catch up on old “Book Friends”.
London is the Fire Captain’s daughter and Firefighter Luca’s best friend. At least on the outside. London has been in love with Luca for years. Too bad he’s not only clueless to what she feels and everyone else knows but him. But after years of holding back she finally takes things into her own hands and kisses him. A kiss that shakes her to the core but sadly causes Luca to let her know in no uncertain terms that they can’t happen. For starters he’s older than her, 2ndly She’s Cap’s daughter and lastly he doesn’t want to screw up their friendship. London takes it hard but after weeks of moping around, decides to try and move on and goes on a blind date. A date that if she didn’t love Luca would have been with the perfect guy. A date that didn’t end so hot cuz not only does she spill her heart out to him about Luca, Luca shows up to put out the kitchen fire at the restaurant where her and Dr. Perfect at eating.
So what happens when Luca sees her out with another guy? Not exactly what you would think but it does make the storyline take on a whole new twist. Grab this one up asap. You’ll be glad you did.
Book 4 and the final book in the Chicago First Responders Series and honestly I believe Ms Harvey has left the best for last with Luca (Luc) Rossi and London ( Lonnie) Kelly’s best friends to lovers journey. This couple have been best friends forever but deep down Lonnie has always wanted more, problem is her father is Luc’s Captain and that is another line in addition to the friendship line that he believes can’t be crossed. So what happens when Lonnie decides to act on her feelings and make the first move so now will Luc respond and will the friendship be tested or will he wake up to his own feelings….. I loved everything about this series and I was sad to see it come to end but I will certainly be reading this whole series again because I believe I will get another layer with each read. I was captivated and drawn into Lonnie and Luc’s journey and once I started reading there was no putting down, I adored Lonnie and I fell hard and fast for Luc, I swooned, I sighed and I smiled and giggled but what made this a very special read was that this relationship was built on a true and deep friendship. The best was certainly left to last !!!!!
5 Star Review Rule Bender (Chicago First Responders #4) by BJ Harvey
From the first chapter I was drawn into the story that B.J Harvey wove about Luca (Luc) Rossi and London (Lonnie) Kelly. They have been friends for years but since London’s father is his captain he has no intention of ever crossing the line.
There were so many layers to the story and each and every one of them was wonderful. London has has had enough of her unrequited love and throws caution to the winds. However when it doesn't pan out the way she wants it to she decides it’s finally time to move on.
Fate though has plans for London and Luca and stumbling across London on a date, it finally dawns on him that if he doesn't make a move then he will lose her forever. I loved their journey, their relationship is built on a genuine friendship and the connection between them is strong.
This was a well written, entertaining story that ticked all the boxes for me as Ms. Harvey has saved the best for last.
Lovely story. I loved London character but kinda dislike Lucas's behavior. I just wanted to jump in the book and shake the hell out of him. I almost imagined his face when he seen London on a date with someone else. It was a little plain for me the moment he realized she was the one and she run into his arms right away. But maybe it's just me. Overall I loved it and I highly recommend it.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book (given by the author)...
3.75 stars
This is Luca and London’s story.
I do love a good romance where the hero realizes what he lost and has to win back the heroine; however, that’s not exactly what happened here. Luca and London are best friends and have been for years, it doesn’t matter that Luca is 10 years her senior, they just love each other. Until one day, London goes for it with Luca just to be shot down repeatedly. Luca really believes they are just friends, but he treats her, as London puts it, as a girlfriend with no benefits; well his tune changes quickly when he sees London on a date.
I really liked where this story was heading, especially after London decided to move on from Luca and make some major life changes. Unfortunately for me, this is where it fell a little flat; after all of Luca’s constant denial of feelings for London and his repetitive rejection of London, once he decides he wants London, she just comes running. She didn’t make him work for it or apologize for everything he put her through.
Even though it wasn’t my favorite, it was a nice end to a wonderful series and a nice ultimate ending to all the previous series that came before this one.
I am going to do it. I am going to kiss my best friend. For years I’ve imagined what it would be like to touch my lips to his, to lick my tongue into his mouth, and to hear him groan—no, not just hear it . . . feel it. At first, I was happy to be in the friend zone. I’d expected it. Seventeen-year-old me crushed on Luca Rossi the day I first met him. Twenty-five year old me had that crush reignited one night two years ago at a charity ball when I was left alone with him after two lieutenants had a very public fight and Dad went to do damage control. But where I saw a sexy, charismatic, funny, and flirty man who made me feel like I was the only woman in the room, Luca just saw the Cap’s youngest daughter. It was the start of something. It’s just that that something was friendship, and friendship only.
Closing the distance between them she touches his lips to his. She feels emboldened and push out the tip of my tongue to touch the seam of his lips, silently begging . . . hoping . . . praying . . . for him to open up and take control. To kiss me back and profess that he, too, has been pining after me like I have him. Except that doesn’t happen. Much to my mortification, Luca slowly pulls back at the same time as he gently pushes me away, putting distance between us. “London,” he breathes, and that one word tells me everything I need to know. I shut down and go into self-preservation mode.
“Hey. A girl’s gotta shoot her shot once? I thought for sure you knew how I felt about you”. “It was worth a try, right?” “It’s just—” I shake my head. “It’s OK, Luc. I get it. You’re not interested in me in that way. It’s OK. I’m OK. I . . .” have to get out of here before I lose it. “Lonnie, we’ve got a good thing going between us. You’re one of my best friends, and the only woman in my life I’m not related to who I care about. I don’t want to lose what we have, and with your dad and family, and the firehouse, it’s just—” “It’s OK, Luc. Honestly. Let’s just put this down to a dumb moment on my part and move on.” Well, hopefully you can, ’cause I’m not sure I ever will. “Catch up soon, yeah?” I say, opening the door and stepping out, not trusting myself to hold it together for another minute. “London, look at me, beautiful. Please.” Standing in the open car door, I brace myself and bend down to meet his gentle gaze. “Are you going to be OK? I don’t want to leave if you’re not.” That’s when I lie to Luca Rossi for the first time in my life, knowing that it’ll be the way things have to be between us. “I’m good, Luc. Drive safe.” “Breakfast after my shift?” he asks, and there’s no missing the hope in his voice. “Always, Luc. Good night,” I say before I shoot him a barely convincing smile and close the door. I wave before I turn my back and do the slow walk of shame to my front door. Lying in bed a while later, unable to sleep as I run the most embarrassing moment of my recent life over and over in my head, I decide that I’m glad I did it. I took a shot and failed.”
Luca finally has an epiphany, the realisation that he wants to date his best friend. He may have taken his time getting his head to listen to his heart, but that doesn’t mean those three words haven’t been branded inside of him. Love. Romantic love. It has always been a foreign concept. She’s had years of having feelings for him; and he’s been in denial for three years, he simply wouldn’t let himself be open to the possibility.

The final addition to BJ Harvey's Chicago First Responders series is here. RULE BENDER is an age-gap, friends to lovers story that was fun, sweet, lighthearted, and thoroughly enjoyable. He's a sexy fire fighter and she's the Captain's daughter, they are the best of friends, but what will happen when their friendship begins to change?
London Kelly has been in love with her bestie, Lua Rossi, for some time, and decides to take a chance of turning their friendship into something more by kissing him. Luca doesn't respond like she hoped and she's left feeling devastated, humiliated, and definitely in the friend zone ... time to move on Lonnie. Is Luca really so blind that he cannot see what exists between himself and Lonnie? Slowly London begins to pull away from Luca, even going on a blind date, of course fate steps in when there's a kitchen fire and Luca's crew is the one to respond. A little green-eyed monster rears its ugly head when Luca sees Lonnie with her date, suddenly he realises he could lose her to someone else ... a thought he didn't like.
What ensues is a wonderful story that had me laughing out loud, getting extremely frustrated, and wanting to smack Luca across the back of his head. Once Luca realised where his heart lay, he pulled out all the big guns to make sure Lonnie knew that he had finally woken up. The auction and the date that followed were amazing, this man is so sweet, honestly how could anyone say "no" to this man. London was hesitant to accept Luca's sudden change of feelings, which I understood, it was her way of dealing with the knowledge that didn't gel with me. After being friends for so long I would have thought that she would have communicated with him a lot better, rather than virtually shutting him out. Once they did finally get their act together, there was no stopping the heat and schmexyness they shared, but what I loved the most was that their friendship never changed.
I really love the Rossi family and their friends. The men are just like naughty little boys, constantly stirring each other, pulling pranks, but they were also always there with good advice and to have one another's backs, plus they have deep hearts and are not afraid to show it. The women, well they just rule the roost, I would love to have them in my circle of friends, they may be crazy, yet they're their for each other no matter how or when. I'm sad to say goodbye to such a wonderful cast of characters, but if I know BJ Harvey, she's already got some more amazing characters waiting in the wings ready to be introduced ... and I can't wait.
RULE BENDER: another brilliant read filled with plenty of laughs. A book that definitely should not be missed.
I picked up this book because I thought it had a fun and interesting combination of tropes. Friends-to-lovers can be a bit hit or miss for me - sometimes I really like it and sometimes it leaves me cold. I’m somewhere on the middle with this book. It did have some cute moments, and I really enjoyed reading the first half of the book. The writing was quite engaging, and I thought the relationship between London and Luca was quite sweet. There was a real sense of how much they cared about each other and I did appreciate that London’s father was not an antagonistic figure towards Luca – he trusted this man he’d known a long time and trusted his daughter to make her own decisions. That was quite refreshing.
However, other aspects didn’t work so well for me. I found the second half of the book off in terms of pacing; the development of their romantic relationship felt quite rushed, whilst the plot felt slow. I didn’t really believe Luca’s jump from platonic feelings to romantic ones. I understood London’s caution at this point of the story and why she doubted his feelings, and I felt like some of the characters were a bit harsh towards her in trying to push her to accept Luca. The big realisation moment felt a bit forced to me, as did his subsequent actions of ‘showing’ her that he had deeper feelings. His methods of persuading her felt a bit childish to me – .
It just felt a bit disjointed and underwhelming. I liked parts of it, I just felt other aspects needed thinking through a little bit more and I wanted to see more actual work on Luca’s part to make up for all of the clumsy ways he’d hurt her over the course of their friendship. Overall it was quite cute and I found it to be well-written, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would when I first started reading it.
Content Notes: Friends-to-lovers, age gap, boss’ daughter.
The longest, most frustrating road from BFFs to BF/GF I've ever been on! London & Luca, best friends. Except she's liked him forever and he insists they're just friends. Yet he always calls her 'his girl' or 'beautiful' or other relationship-y kinds of endearments. But he is always making sure 'best friends' is in there as much as possible as well. It's tortuous. He's not being mean, he's just a blind and oblivious douche bro. And just to mix it up a bit, he goes protective possessive caveman on other guys around her. She's a puppy dog over it all hoping one day he'll change his mind. It really became too much for me to handle. I am conflicted as to if I want to punch him in the throat or kick him in the giblets. I know I definitely want to slap London to try to snap her out of it even though that would do no good and would be a waste of my energy. I went from feeling bad for her to being mad at her for being such a doormat with googly stars in her eyes over this guy. They're both ridiculous and frustrating. It's an okay quick read - BJ Harvey spins a good tale - but it's so frustrating - can I say frustrating enough times? It's the only thing that fits for me.
This is book four in The Chicago First Responders Series and it is London and Luca's story and omg it is definitely a must read. London and Luca have a long history together as they have been best friend's for year's but London has been in love with him right from the start but there friendship is so important and he doesn't seem to feel the same way and only sees her as his best friend. Luca is a fireman and work's with London's dad who is his fire chief and there is also a no dating rule so that definitely keeps them in the friend's zone. When London decided that she needs to move forward with her dating life and goes on a date she doesn't expect to see Luca come in and that is when Luca sees her with another man and realised what had always been right in front of him but will it work out and they get a happy ending or will they crash and burn losing everything that is important to the both of them. Wow I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down as it was a real page turner and so addictive and I can't wait to read more book's by this author in the future.
London Kelly has been in love with her best friend Luca since she met him. To complicate matters her father is Captain of the fire house where Luca works. There is a fairly hard and fast rule that firefighters do not date the exes, sisters or daughters of other firefighters. Six months ago London kissed Luca and he friend zoned her hard. She works at Valentine Rossi's boutique day spa as her business manager.
Luca Rossi and his brother Marco and sister Sky work at the same firehouse. They have a huge close knit Italian family. Captain Crawford strongly suggests Luca take the lieutenant's exam.
Tina goes on a blind date with Brock and the restaurant kitchen has a fire. Luca's team responds to the call and he goes all protective best friend in her and her date. Afterwards he starts seeing London as a woman and not just his bestie. They start dating and later get their HEA.

I fell in love with these characters right from the start! 5 stars for this one! London has had a crush on Luca forever, so when she finally decides she's going to make her move, and it's met with Luca not really returning her kiss, she decides it's time to move on. While out on a blind date, there is a fire in the kitchen, and who comes in but Luca along with his fire company, and she hadn't told him she was going out on a date, and when he see's her with her date, he starts to realize hey, what are these feelings? Luca will not date his best friend London, after all she's his chiefs daughter number one, but she's his bestie, that's all he feels for her, but when another guy comes around, he starts to experience feelings he's never felt before. Could it be true what everyone has been saying to him, that he does have feelings for her? I enjoyed their story, Luca will annoy you while you will also swoon over him, and London, she's the best! Don't miss out on the last book in this great series!
London Kelly is in love with her best friend and has been for years. Loved London & Luca's story! If you love a friend to lovers book, then this book is for you! Loved the chemistry between these two! Who doesn't love a hot fire fighter! Another great read in this series!
I adore this series and I'm sad to see it come to a close. Although you can read these stories as standalones, do yourself a favor and read them all! You wont regret it!
London and Luca has been best friends for years. For London, it turned into a massive crush about 4 minutes after they met but Luca has been harder to convince. Never wanting to lose their friendship, he refuses to even consider a relationship with his bestie, even after she got the courage to plant a kiss on him. It takes seeing her moving on for Luc to realize, she's the one woman he can't lose.
I love this couple, although I wanted to give the Gibbs smack to Luc (like they do with Scotty!) several times. This woman has the patience of a saint and it's dang lucky for Luc. But when he got his act together, what a sweet knockout. Loved every minute of catching up with the family and friends I've come to love so much over the past couple series'; they are like family now and I hate to see them go! Great book, better series!
Loved Luca and London. They are best freinds.Londin has been in love with Luca since they have bern best freinds, but he says he does not feel the same way.Her father is the fire cheif at the station he works in and there is a rule against dating wives, exes, sister's and daughter's and he doesn't want to breal that rule. When London kisses him one night he tells her they can only ever be freinds. That's when London decides she needs to move on and find somebody. She goes on a blind date and doesn't tell Luca. When the restaurant she goes to with her date needs a fire crew,it is Luca who comes to the scene of the fire and is surprised to see London on a date. That's when he realises he could lose London to another guy. Will he admit to his feelings and break the rules or will he stay in the freind zone. Read London and Luca's story to find out how they get to their happily ever after.I really enjoyed their story and will be reading more books by this author😁.

London has loved Luca for forever. He keeps her firmly in the friend zone until he sees her looking at another man the way she's always looked at him. Now he has to face the truth - he wants more than mere friendship with this woman. He sets out to win her heart in a spectacular display worthy of every good "chick flick" ever made to show her how he feels. And the crazy thing is, EVERYBODY knew how she felt but him (and maybe Scotty).
I almost teared up at times cuz Luca was so clueless and I felt sorry for London. I love how she was able to maintain herself around him after she took her shot with him and missed initially. She took steps to move on, prompting him to open his eyes and see the wonderful love he had waiting for him if he only just opened his arms. I love that Luca respected London to the extent that he willfully denied his feelings for so long, truly valuing their friendship. Such a good story with a bit of steam towards the end.

London & Luca are best friends, but she's been secretly carrying a torch for him. There's a complication to that though, her father is the fire captain, and there's a strict rule in place, no touching his daughter. London finally decides she's going to go for it & kisses him but he shuts her down hurting her in the process so she decides that it's time to move on. It literally takes her going out on a date with someone else for him to realize that he's messing up big time & is about to lose her for good. Of course nothing is ever simply in love so there are a few more bumps in the road. Will he finally give in to what they both want or lose her for good?! I tend to stay away from friends to lovers in romance because the back & forth can frustrate me to no end to the point that I won't finish the book but BJ Harvey penned the perfect story in my eyes which kept me captivated cover to cover. There's so much heart to this story that it will stay with me for a long time, so y'all don't want to pass up Rule Bender! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I've been waiting for this book since book one of this series. There was just something about Luc that told me he was gonna be worth the wait.
Luc is the last man standing of the Rossi boys and is happy being single. He spends most of his free time with his best friend (and the Captains daughter) London. They have breakfast dates and movie nights, but it's all platonic....Well for Luca anyway. Lonnie has long come to terms with the fact that she's in love with her best friend, but Luc is oblivious. She's Cap's daughter and the firehouse 101 rule is No wives, exes, sisters, or daughters—that’s our rule.
Until one night that London breaks the rule and Luca starts to see everything in a whole new light. His world is turned on its axis and he has a lot to think about.
I can't put in words how much I adore this book. I've already read it three times and that won't be the last time.
OMG OMG OMG!!!! I’m a bit backwards and started this series off first (and I will go back and read the Cook brothers) but again OMG what and ending to this series. This has to be my #1 best friend to lovers stories that I have ever read. It’s up there with my other number ones from other authors. I can say so much about this book but I can not put into words…from the very beginning you can feel the anticipation growing and you are at the edge of your seat, just wondering what will happen next. 🥰🥰🥰 I am in love with Luca and London AHHHHHHH!!!! All I can say is if you are looking for a REALLY good best friends to lovers story and you love being at the edge of your seat, full of anticipation and excitement to see what happens next….this is it right here folks! And if not then, i don’t why you are reading my review….or maybe I do 😝😄. BJ Harvey this book is absolutely the best I LOVE IT!!!! 😆🥰😆🥰😆🥰
Luca and London have been best friends for years. London has always wanted more, but the one time she went for it, Luca shot her down. The fire department has a rule: no wives, exes, sisters, or daughters. London just so happens to be the daughter of Captain Peter Kelly. London knows she needs to get over wanting Luca as more than a friend. She decides to go on a blind date. Normally she’d tell Luca, but she doesn’t this time, but she does send a picture in her sexy dress, lol. Wouldn’t you know it, the fire department is called to restaurant and Luca is on the call. Suddenly, he starts thinking of London differently, but he can’t go there. She’s the Captain’s daughter, he tells himself. Grab your copy and see how this steamy read turns out. You won’t be disappointed. I loved catching up with the previous characters, we fell in love with.

What’s not to love about a best friends to lovers story? London Kelly can’t help but be love with her best friend Luca Rossi. She’s his girl, does just about everything with him and he knows everything about her. Only problem, Luca’s a little slow on what he’s feeling and seriously I just wanted to grab him and say “wakey wakey hands off snakey” and give him a slap in the back of the head. London being his Captains daughter and with the rules of the firehouse regarding sisters, daughters and exes, Luca follows them to the tee until that “Ah Ha” moment when he finally figures out what everyone has known in forever. This story has all the feels with a good dose of fun and laughter on the side. Yes you will be rolling your eyes more often than not but you can’t help but fall in love with these two. The last in this line it’s been a pleasure reading this series. BJ Harvey you are the bomb and I’ve loved it all.
Well it's about time he pulled his head out of his...you know. This story was a full story between two best friends with bad timing. He finally woke up and several of us were so glad when he realized why he felt what he did.
She was in love and tried to let her best friend know it, but he said he didn't feel the same. Problem is, he'd realized just how wrong he was-years later.
Wow, I feel bad for her. How terrible to feel that way, then put yourself out there. Then he still acts the way he does, but it strains your heart. Knowing that you can't have him exactly how you want him was sad. I'm so glad he finally realized why he felt like he did-too bad he waited so long. I wished he gave her more time to process his revelations but glad they are together now all the same. Great writing and great couple.
