So glad to meet up with the Jackrabbit Junction crew again! I just love seeing how this group of RV campground living characters are doing. Kate’s pregnancy is progressing nicely ;). Claire & Mac are figuring out ideas for The Shaft & Brewery & Claire finds herself helping her Grandpa more than she wants to. Who knew Chester is such a shrewd businessman? Ronnie is still with Grady & still running from hit men. Aunt Millie & the Geritol Gangsters are still going strong. Penny & Mississippi still have an electric shock between them. Elizabeth is still hanging around Grady. It felt so good to catch up with all of the characters in this series & I love them all. Ann Charles’s brand of humor is such a delight - “Well, wasn’t she just sweet as sugar-laced arsenic?” (referring to Elizabeth’s mother). Can’t wait for the next in this wonderful series.

"Twisty Tortoise Tussles" is the sixth book in Ann Charles' Jackrabbit Junction series. Although I haven't read the previous five books, my review will focus on this one as a standalone. Before the story begins, there's a helpful list of character information along with the books they appear in, which I found useful.

I love books that blend action, mystery, drama, and humor, and this one does it well. The dynamics between the characters are engaging, though it took me a bit to get used to everything. Once I did, it became a lot more enjoyable to read. However, I wish there was more plot development. It felt like the characters were driving the story, leaving me wanting more from the plot itself. Since I haven't read the previous books, there were some obvious points I couldn't understand.

That said, when the book hits its stride, it's really good. It delivers suspense, laughs, and even romance. While I had higher expectations, I wasn't disappointed because it had a certain charm to it. Despite being quite lengthy, it still ended on a cliffhanger, leaving me eager to see what happens next with this bunch.

Overall, it's a decent book. Maybe if I get the chance to read its predecessors, my opinion will change, since I jumped into an ongoing story.

There's excitement galore in this latest instalment in the Jackrabbit Junction series! The Morgan sisters, along both with their allies and enemies, are back again with many twists to their ongoing tale!
Claire and her sisters can't seem to stay out of trouble, and a couple new characters added to the mix are adding more drama than ever.
I really enjoyed the edge-of-your-seat action and usual hilarious banter that only Ann Charles can bring to a story. Highly recommend!

Its a miss for me. This book reads like a really long three stooges episode. Im actually only halfway through, but its dragging. So much diatribe, not enough plot. The constant alliteration (banana brains, monkey mind, etc) and euphemisms are starting to really get to me. I want the plot to move forward, but its just jumping from character to character and tons of dialogue that doesn't answer any questions, just brings more "drama". And kates crazy baby hormone stuff is getting old. It was cute at first. But its seriously played out, to the point where I actually don't like the character
At all. Shes rude to everyone, even her sweet boyfriend. Honestly I don't see any redeeming qualities in her anymore, she's a grown adult just constantly being an asshole 🙄. And all three of the Morgan sisters refusal to move forward with their lives is just....annoying. I guess im.not seeing any character growth and the very three stooges like quips and constant back and forth doesn't add to the book or story, it just draaaaagggggggs it out. Im writing this review in hopes that the lovely, talented author doesn't try this with her other series (Deadwood and the Undertaker books) because I adore them and don't want them lost in this silly mess. I feel like the characters degrade in each novel of jackrabbit junction. I've never dnf'ed an ann charles book before, so this is a first. I just can't even read it anymore. If only the Goofy phrases and "arguing" between characters was halved, the shtick is just being way way overused

Twisty Tortoise Tussles is the sixth book in author Ann Charles’s Jackrabbit Junction mystery series. Looking for a mystery novel packed with humor (and I mean A LOT of humor), drama, some romance, and secrets, then this is the book for you! Whether you have read the previous books (our Reviews here) in this series or not, you’ll find something to enjoy with these characters.

Right from the beginning, the author, Ann Charles, gives you a cast of characters and which books they have made appearances in. Some you’ll see have been there from the beginning and others have made on and off appearances, but they all come together to contribute mightily to the overall story, helping to bring it to life in a big way.

You’re going to love the author’s great attention to detail and amount of humor right off the bat, and giggle when you read lines like – “Kate’s smile was too wide. Deranged clowns looked less creepy.” Prepare for wide eyes, stifled chuckles, and tightly clamped lips as you resist howling with laughter (depending on your location, of course).

The detailing in the characters’ behavior, and in some cases sensitivities to certain words or even looks truly amplifies the humor. Through these details, the author encourages you to delve deeper into this story within the first few pages. Things get even better as the story progresses with phrases like “squirrels in her noggin’ got rowdy and started bouncing around”, and “tendency to morph into Taz the Tasmanian Devil.” Talk about painting a picture of someone when a particular mood or moodiness hits them. Plenty of fun to read and imagine the chaos they must leave in their wake.

Brace yourself when a particular blonde struts her way onto the scene in chapter one. Drama is following like wildfire in her wake, and she has nothing but trouble in her eyes. Who needs just one character to dislike when two make the party even better? While the drama will initially appear to be targeted toward one particular character, just hold your horses, because it’s not. There is plenty of drama to go around and go around it shall!

Drama is the name of the game with this book though as there is the day-to-day drama that must always be dealt with. Each of the characters featured their own issues that they must face and it’s not getting any easier it seems. Whether it’s individuals wanting to stir up trouble and seek revenge, or multiple projects being heaped on one’s heads, there is always something going on.

One of the highlights that you’re going to enjoy about this book is the attention to the desert scenes. Twisty Tortoise Tussles is based on a small desert town called Jackrabbit Junction, in Arizona. When the characters are outdoors, the author makes sure to pay close attention to the various wildlife, both flora, and fauna, that can be found there. If you ever watched a nature show or even been to the desert then you’re going to appreciate the various plants and animals mentioned throughout these particular scenes. They help to create a vivid image of both the beauty and the danger that surrounds them on a daily basis. The black and white sketches scattered throughout this book are a nice added bonus to complete the mental images you’ll be creating for specific scenes.

One of the benefits of this novel is that the author tucks in backstories where appropriate for certain characters. You get a more precise understanding as to why they ended up where they are and how they got their start. This information might be already known by those who have read this series to this point, but for new readers, just diving into this is always a bonus. It helps brings you closer to the characters and ties it all together better. There is some filler for situations that have happened in previous books (our reviews here) as well. This definitely goes to help fill in gaps and questions that will naturally arise for those who decide to grab this book out of order.

Before this book even begins the author makes it a prerogative to let readers know that this story is going to follow more than just one character. Now, in case you’re wondering – does that mean that each chapter will identify that particular focus? The simple answer – is no. Don’t worry though, you’ll grasp pretty quickly who the current focus is.

The mystery element is truly unique in this book. When you read “mystery novel” your first thought is that the mystery aspect is going to take center stage and be the primary focal point of the book. With Twisty Tortoise Tussles, this particular novel, that’s not necessarily the case. When I say that, I mean that there are multiple mystery threads floating around. One that appears to continue from the previous book(s), – reviews here – and then new threads that crop up in this particular installment. The variety of threads will keep you on your toes as the author shifts between characters, but that’s really half the fun.

The characters really bring this book to life. There are more moments than not that you will believe you could go to Jackrabbit Junction and cross paths with them. You’re going to love how there is essentially a character for anyone who reads this book. As you read, you’re going to feel a connection to one or more characters. Whether it be in their current behavior, or in the situations and issues that they have not only had to deal with in their lives but overcome as well. Books that bring you those types of connections are always some of the ones that stick with you long after you’ve put the them down.

Pros:
Great attention to detail in both the landscape/area and the characters.
Just the right amount of drama and “crazy” without going overboard.
The humor is perfectly balanced and hits just the right spot to keep you entertained.
The surprise elements. You just never know what’s going to happen next or who’s going to do what next. Keeps you on your toes.
Engaging novel even if you haven’t read the previous books in this series.

Cons:
If you haven’t read the previous books you have quite a few questions concerning previous incidents that are brought up throughout the book.

Lesson of the book: It’s always good to know that family has your back because you never know when you’ll need a witness.
Favorite Character(s): Penelope “Penny” Harrison and Kathryn “Kate” Morgan

“What kind of trouble are we in now?” – hilarious mysteries well told!

Arizona author Ann Charles earned her degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of Washington and is a prolific novelist specializing in fiction – a blend of romance, mystery, things bizarre, and humor. Her work has been rewarded by not only a large audience of fans, but also with recognition in such awards as The Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence and the Romance writers of America Golden Heart Award among others. She is a member of Sisters in Crime and Western Writers of America.

The ability to make fine mystery hilarious is a gift Ann Charles owns. Her stories are populated with strange characters whose idiosyncrasies amplify the plot line. The principle characters are the Morgan sisters – Claire, Ronnie, Kate – and this sixth episode opens with the author’s zippy dialogue – ‘Claire zeroed in on Butch. “The mother of your child is up to something.” “Up to what?” “I don’t know exactly, but it’s something that is making her face twitch again.” Butch rubbed his jaw “What conspired prior to this twitch?” “Twitches,” she clarified. Several over a short period of time But I can’t tell you anything more than that.” With that intro the title is defined and the atmosphere of mystery is set for yet another romp with the Morgan girls, again illustrated by CS Kunkle.

The novel is lengthy, but speeds along so well that the interplaying mysteries jump off the page. The stories are distilled as follows: ‘When someone is dead and buried, they’re supposed to stay that way ... Aren’t they? Claire Morgan thought so, but now she suspects the dead guy whose treasures she’s been digging up is not only breathing, but spying on her, too. Crap! When someone is divorced from a pain in the a**, they’re supposed to stay that way ... At least that’s what Ronnie Morgan had hoped when she dumped her husband. But then he rolled over on some bloodthirsty criminals. With him tucked away in prison, they’ll settle for taking their revenge on her. Fudge! When someone is temporarily insane—Kate Morgan is not crazy, dang it! A few twitches and some mad laughter aside, she has a gut feeling her family is in danger. Big danger. The kind that ends with a lot of blood. Now, it’s her job to keep them alive.’

Having enjoyed Ann’s other books, this is the best one yet! The adventure provides just that sort of diversion we all need on occasion – solid story development ushering in interesting and somewhat askew characters all related with one fine bunch of belly laughs. Read and enjoy!

The Review

This was another brilliant addition to the Jackrabbit Junction Mystery series. The author does a wonderful job of balancing the humor and wit that the sisters exude throughout the novel with the actual mystery and suspense that the narrative tackles. The humor cuts through the tension of the plot perfectly as the mystery deepens and the sisters find themselves deeper and deeper into trouble.

While the action and the thriller aspects of the novel come through perfectly, it was the unique blend of romance and engaging dialogue between the characters that made the story shine. The funny moments between the sisters as they worked together and argued amongst themselves highlighted that perfect sibling tension that drives this series forward, while also giving the heated moments between the women and their respective partners their space to shine brightly. The emphasis the author gives to the supporting cast as well made the small-town element of the story really come to life perfectly on the page.

The Verdict

Thrilling, entertaining, and memorable, author Ann Charles’s “Twisty Tortoise Tussles” is a must-read romantic comedy meets mystery read that readers will love getting lost in. The relatability of the characters and their connection to one another, as well as the small-town life, made this story both compelling and exhilarating, and readers will not be disappointed in this fantastic addition to the series.

Twisty Tortoise Tussles by Ann Charles is an amazing adventure in A Jackrabbit Junction mystery series. One of the things I love most about her books is that they always start with humor and intrigue. Already, I am deep in guessing what is happening and what will happen next. I can feel some of the characters' dread as they try as guess, too. I love how easy it is to get lost within these characters' lives and their dilemmas.

Fun, engaging, and suspenseful- Ann Charles writes an unforgettable adventure. One that will stay in my heart forever. The women in this book are strong and have to be to put up with all the craziness. The men are just as interesting. Ann Charles is queen of humor and mystery. She definitely knows how to lure and keep my undivided attention. Every page is full of action, trouble, and laughter. Also, there is plenty of romance to add even more fun to this read.

If you are a fan of rom-coms, mystery, and humor this is highly recommended. I read a lot of Agatha Frost and Angie Fox's novels and this writer is just as phenomenal as they are. I cannot brag enough on how entertaining this novel is.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Another fabulous book by the incomparable Ann Charles. This latest installment has all of her special ingredients for a fun, humerous and wild story. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, sexy encounters, wacky characters and mysterious goings on. You know, the usual chaos that defines the Morgan sister's lives. Some storylines were tied up while others left dangling which means I can't wait until for next book to see how (if!) they are resolved. These books just keep getting better with each release. Also, a tip of the hat to the author's brother for his super illustrations which are sprinkled throughout the book. I always enjoy turning a page and discovering one of his little gems. The one in chapter 20 made me laugh out loud. A word to the wise, if you are new to the series be sure to start with book 1. There is a lot of history and chaos to catch up on. Yay Ann Charles! Way to go!

Hello, all! I have just finished Twisty Tortoise Tussles by Ann Charles. Wowzers, was it good! I've read all 30ish of Ann Charles' books and this ranks among the best. Every time I thought I was going to get a pay out for all of the suspense, another twist (pun intended) would come! Three sisters, all out to defend each other while holding different versions of reality/facts combine with the challenges of new relationships and new businesses combine with Ann Charles' own brand of hilarity... Best I can say now is go read it! Start with this one or do your self a solid and start with the first in this Jackrabbit Junction series. If you've read Deadwood Series, you'll appreciate the main characters of this series are Natalie's cousins. Want to laugh? Love characters? Be surprised by endings? This is a book/series for you! #TwistyTortoise Tussles #NewbookbyAnnCharles

In the latest installment of the Jackrabbit Junction Mystery Series, you'll find yourself, once again, laughing & cringing your way through one Morgan sister after another's unique attempt at looking out for their family, while trying to stay out of jail, stay alive, & have a helluva lot of fun along the way!

A new story full of signature over-the-top Morgan sister escapades! Another adventure of ridiculous hilarity that Claire, Ronnie, & "Don't call me CRAZY" Kate put themselves & their lucky, but long suffering, men through. Add in the usual family & friends for a unique cast of characters that will keep you laughing from beginning to end.

Ann Charles never disappoints & has become one of my favorite authors! I always look forward to her next read!

**For a mature audience that doesn't mind some bawdy language & imagery.**

I have been a huge fan of the Jackrabbit Junction series from the beginning, enjoying the shenanigans the Morgan sisters routinely embroil themselves in. But with this book, Ann Charles outdoes herself.
In an almost heroic feat of writing, Charles takes every thread of the previous books, every storyline concerning each of the sisters and the people around them, and weaves them into a cohesive whole. This time we aren't along for the ride being driven by one Morgan sister, but a romp following all three of them, with Penelope and Mississippi adding their own drama for good measure.
As usual, the story is riddled with fast and witty dialogue, laugh-out-loud moments, and just plain fun that keeps you turning the pages until the end.
I can hardly wait for the next installment.

All of the books concerning the Morgan sisters are excellent and this is no exception! You have all sisters involved with their own part in the story. In this book the mystery is around Ronnie and Brady. Kate is busy trying to help Claire build a bird viewing deck to keep her out of trouble but that is not happening! The past is knocking at the door and the future is getting help from the geriatric crowd which involves family.
We will add in Penny who is Brady’s sister and the action begins. What I do like after reading the details is the summery by day of the action! Be prepared for a pinkie swear between two sisters and enjoy all the action, romance and even humor!

This is the last book currently available in the Jackrabbit Junction series. Since several plot points remain unresolved, we can only hope there will be more books in the future. This book seemed to me to be a bit of a placeholder. Although many of the story lines of previous books are advanced, nothing of major import seems to occur. A new character of uncertain loyalties is introduced, an old artifact is exposed as a fake, Mac and Claire further define their relationship, the sheriff's toxic ex wife is dealt with, but Crazy Kate is largely absent and no one goes near any of the mines. We will see what happens if Ms Charles continues this series.

Twisty Tortoise Tussels, Book 6 in Jackrabbit Junction by Ann Charles. This book is funny. Morgan Sisters Are Upfront about what they want and they want the sheriff’s ex wife to pay for her lies. Ronnie, the older sister, is still being targeted by her ex-husbands criminal friends. She is a nervous wreck. Kate, the youngest, is pregnant and determined to bring down the deputy sheriff who keeps arresting her for nothing. And, the 2nd sister, Claire, is building a birding platform and convincing her boyfriend, Mac, to stay home. It is a busy book with lots of angst but lots of humor, too. Can’t wait for #7. Surely by then things will have settled down in Jackrabbit Junction.

Loved it

I was so glad to hear from the Morgan sisters again….I miss them when I don’t hear from them for awhile. This book has all that you’d expect from the Morgan sisters and their posses and then some. The only think I didn’t like about this one was that I finished it to fast and am again waiting to hear from them. I tried to read slow but the story pulls you in and before you know it…you’re finished. Great book and you should definitely read it!! Thank you Ms. Ann Charles…..another hit

The Morgan sisters are back and at it again! Between Kate‘s pregnancy hormones and Ronnie‘s runnings with hired guns, there’s no peace in Jackrabbit Junction! Oh yeah, we can’t forget that Grady‘s ex is back to make trouble. This is a truly wacky fun read that you will enjoy every minute of! Once you get started you won’t be able to stop. It’s going to be fun to see how they get out of these messes. I love this series and these characters. Oh, no spoiler here but Claire comes through again!
Great job once again Ann Charles!

The newest installment in the series is a great addition. If you have not read the series yet, you will want to get it. The sisters are back and getting into and out of trouble as usual. If you have a favorite sister it's time to catch up with her. The writing and story line are terrific. There is such great imagery in this book that you can help but be carried away into story. As always there are lots of laughs with sisters. Have not been disappointed with the series yet and can't wait until the next one!

The Morgan Sisters are at it again

I love this series. From the first Jackrabbit Junction book thru the Twisty Tortoise Tissues the Morgan sisters stick together. This installment is no different. All the characters are QUIRKY but loveable/ likeable. At this time they are fighting off Ronnie's ex husband s gangsters and Grady's delusional ex wife. All the sisters are keeping their own secrets. Read on for some excitement. Waiting for the next book. I just hope Ms. Charles writes fast.

Morgan sisters

It was great catching up with Morgan sister's. They still have their mess of problems, Kate is pregnant and ranting and raving, Clair and Mac have a new venture together, and Ronnie is still dodging the assassins that want her ex husband to offer up information. On top of this Grady's ex wife is trying to ruin Penny's business and Ronnie and Grady's relationship. New problems, some new characters and the same old ones. Great story full of chuckles and twisted scenarios.

Disappointing. I love this series but I felt that there was not much happening & this book was simply a filler. The 3 sisters & sister of a boyfriend did a lot of repeating the same things to each other in different dynamics. First 1 says it to 2, then 1 says it to 3 and then to 4, and on and on until every combination has been covered. It was slightly annoying. It won't stop me from listening to the next one as I really love this series & the author. I also love the Deadwood series. Look forward to the next one.

Just gets better and better another 5 star read

With TTT author Ann Charles has really come into her own. The addition to the tale of three sisters, their men, their growing extended family, and the often hilarious trouble these girls get in to makes for exciting and utterly satisfying reading. Start with the first book in the series and indulge in hours hilarity, mystery, romance and sibling bickering.

Twisty Tortoise

Fantastic book as usual. Now more characters and love interests. Leaves us with even more questions now we have to wait. I don't like waiting. Really good story. I read it slow as I didn't want it to end thoroughly enjoyed it helped fill in some things about characters. As usual raises more questions than answered. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending which helped round out some ideas.

The Prickly Pear Posse rides again! A troublesome ex-wife's vendetta, a rumored hit man, a dead man who may not be dead, it's business as usual for the Morgan sisters. Fortunately they have family, friends, and the library ladies for back up. This story races along like greased lightning! And the heat index gets quite high!

the writing is excellent as always , the reason for the missing star…

There are at least 4 stories that run parallel in this book, the Morgan sisters and a near sister are interesting and I found having just a fourth of the book dedicated to each story disappointing for me. I like the sisters and would have want each to have their own story

I want to be their friend!

More hookups than the phone company. The Morgan sisters are still at it, living life and trying to untangle all the problems brought on by an assortment of ex-partners. Hitmen, ex-wives and ex-husbands all keep the ladies on their toes. Another delightful romp in the desert!

Can't wait for #7

Another amazing installment in the Morgan sisters series. So difficult to put down once I started. Funny in so many parts yet dramatic in others. Ann draws you in with such interesting story lines and characters, you feel like you are in the midst of the book. I hate having to wait for the next book. But I know it takes time to write an excellent story!!

I have yet to read an Ann Charles book that wasn't creatively ingenious, interesting and absolute fun. She is one of my favorite authors. This book is just as interesting as all the others. I am just sad that the time between books is so long as I am always ready for the next book immediately after finishing the recent release.
