Homicide at the Harbor is the page-turning second book in the fun Maddie Mills Cozy Mystery Series. If you like cute dogs, strong female sleuths and a touch of romance, then you’ll love this clean, heartwarming whodunnit by USA Today and WSJ Bestselling Author Cindy Bell.
Maddie Mills is enjoying being back in the small town she grew up in. Her younger sister Tammy has been visiting, and driving her a little crazy, as little sisters sometimes do. Maddie is enjoying their visit and looking forward to a visit from her son, Dean. Everything seems to be going well until someone from Maddie's past shows up in town. When Dean recognizes the guy, his concern for his mother increases knowing he could be there to cause her trouble. Maddie assures him she will be fine and to let it go. When the guy is found dead, Dean becomes their prime suspect. Maddie knows her son is not a killer, yet he has no alibi during the time of the murder. Maddie, along with the help of her sister and friends race against time to track down the killer before Dean finds himself in jail.
In this second book of the series, we see a little more of Maddie's past revealed, giving us a better understanding of why she needed to start over. I liked getting to know her backstory. Maddie is stubborn at times, not backing down when she feels she's right. The small town, loyal friends and family and several suspects make this an ideal cozy. The story flows nicely with an unexpected ending that wraps everything up.
I requested and received an advanced readers copy of this book from the author; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Mysterious Murder Maddie is determined to help find the murderer, so that her son can be let off the hook. She is juggling investigating, looking for a job, and trying to work out if the police chief is friend or foe This is a mysterious murder. A person killed a bad guy who was a loan shark. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this second book much more than the first book. I hadn't really been sure I liked Maddie all that much in the first book and I do still get kinda annoyed when she's always thinking her lifelong friend who's done nothing but have her back for her entire life was trying to pull one over on her. I hope she overcomes those trust issues, yep I can see where her felon ex-husband instilled that kind of distrust. But hey this other guy's a total sweetheart to her and always seems to know when she needs someone, even if it's just someone to do a brain dump with. She'll come around, I'm sure!
It was great getting to know Maddie's sister Tammy and Maddie's son Dean. She was definitely busy being a momma bear in this book trying to make sure no one pinned a murder on Dean. I loved how Tammy wanted to help sleuth and I guess it was a good thing she hadn't gone any farther with Maddie to the showdown. Tammy at least did the wait in the car thing pretty well lol. The showdown was tense and reinforcements came just when needed. Maddie was just happy her son was cleared.
It was so cool at the end when Tammy and Amber had a little surprise for Maddie, and she surprised them back by loving the idea. Now I'm very eager to borrow the next book on KU when it comes out! From the cover, it looks like a fun Christmas read!
The second book in Cindy Bell's new series does not disappoint! Maddie has settled into her childhood home in Bayview and is enjoying a visit from her sister, Tammy. She is also waiting the arrival of her son, Dean. When the not so distant past comes back to haunt her, Maddie is, once again, thrust into the middle of a murder investigation. I adore Maddie and her fierce love for her family and friends. Bayview is a quaint small town on the water that is inhabited by some great characters. I'm looking forward to Maddie's next adventures. I highly recommend this series as well as the author's other series.
* I received an ARC from the author but this review is my honest opinion.
I have enjoyed all of Cindy Bell's series but I really like this Maddie Mills' series. This is Book #2. Maddie was forced to move to her childhood home in Bayview near the water after her divorce from her criminal husband. She has moved with her two West Highland white Terriers, Bella and Polly. She is waiting for a visit from her sister, Tammy Webber and her son Dean. When Dean is accused of murder, Maddie's best friend from childhood, Amber West and Amber's mother, Iris, jump in to help Maddie prove Dean's innonence, the story becomes one of intrigue. I highly recommend this story. I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest opinon.
Maddie has moved back to her hometown in Bayview with her two Westies, Bella and Polly, after her divorce from her criminal husband. Her sister, Tammy shows up for a visit along with Maddie’s son Dean. When Dean recognizes a man from her exe’s criminal past, she tells him not to worry. Unfortunately, then the man is murdered, Dean is accused and doesn’t have an alibi. Maddie decides to investigate to prove Dean’s innocence and things get a little crazy! A fun mystery with great characters and an intriguing plot. I received a free ARC of this book and write this review voluntarily.
The characters are well developed, the twists and turns are certainly there. Figuring out "who dun it" is a fun exercise.
While some is a little contrived, you become invested in the characters and the town of Bayview and the people who populate it. It is all there, the heroine, the handsome, unexpected hero, the red herrings and the villains and the believable supporting cast.
Truly a great way to escape for an afternoon or evening, leave your cares and worries behind and visit Bayview!
It was okay and a struggle to get through. The narration was pretty clunky and I had to stop several times to re-read a sentence a few times to have it make sense. I did find it annoying how the characters were talking about a cupcake then the next sentence was about the murder followed immediately by a description of how they were baking the cupcake. Like I said….the narration was clunky.
Kudos for not messing up the character names like most cozy authors do.
This is the second book I’ve read in this series and I think I’ll pass on the rest.
Homicide at the Harbor a Maddie Mills Cozy Mystery Series
Maddie and her sister Tammy prepare the family bakery to be sold when a man from her past is killed and Maddie seeks the real killer before her son is charged and arrested. Her two Westies, Polly and Bella add a sweet fur-ever love to the cast in this Book 2 of the Maddie Mills Cozy Mystery Series
Maddie is starting to feel at home and happy that her son and her sister are visiting. She sees the man who demanded that she pay the money back that her husband had borrowed from him. The man is found dead and her son is the top suspect. She also has to decide how she will make a living and if she will reopen the bakery her parents owned.
Maddie Mills was still trying to start her life over in her old childhood home.
This certainly had a slow start. Very slow. Usually, the dead body would show up in chapter 1. Instead, we don’t hear about the murder until chapter 7. Right there it’s way too slow. Not good.
I’m really enjoying the Maddie Mills Mystery Series. After her divorce, Mattie goes back to live in her hometown. There’s some mystery, murder, friendship and romance! It has it all!
The second installment in the Maddie Mills series not only has her, her sister and friends as well as the town sheriff solving a murder that involved her son but finally puts Maddie on the road to owning her family’s bakery. A fun mystery.
This book kept me guessing and intrigued as to what happens next. I really enjoyed the team of Jake and Maddie and am excited to see how their relationship evolves. Overall, a quick and fun read.
A nice combination of cozy, romance and a little suspense. I have really enjoyed both books in this series. It is not great literature but a pleasant read.
Maddie solves another murder. This time her son was accused of murdering the loan shark that her ex husband used. Good book. I have already downloaded the next one.
