They say you can’t go home again. Sometimes you have no choice.
I thought I’d left my past behind for good. When my brother dies in a mysterious car crash, I have to come home to take over the family tuning business – and it’s back to a life of fast cars and faster girls.
But things are not like I remember. There’s something weird going on in Santo Domingo, something that seems connected to the city’s underground street racing scene.
There’s the orange-haired mechanic at the tuning shop with the FOXGRRL license plate. A black cat hanging around my house and the dreams I’ve been having about a racer girl with cat ears and a tail. Then there’s girl from high school who had a crush on me. She’s different too, and I can’t figure out why.
They all say there’s something special about me. Something important.
I need to get to the bottom of things, to find out who's gunning after my family. But with three hot girls hunting me, I have to remember it’s business before pleasure.
Shifter Girls: Redline is a slice of life adventure set in the Demon Hunter universe and contains unconventional relationships.
Michael Dalton is a professional journalist and editor.
Michael wrote his first piece of fiction in third grade, for which he was immediately accused of plagiarism by his teacher. Since then, he has been writing more or less steadily, interrupted only by occasional demands of work and family.
Michael lives with his family and multiple pets in Southern California.
A nice slice-of-life story about the supernatural, there are deeper plota ocurring but the MC isn't directly involved. I got me interested in the bigger picture of this universe.
I enjoyed the first half of the story, but the coincidences became too forced. When his ex from the academy showed ho and he just let it go without a word, I was too irritated to care about the story any longer.
So full disclosure: I recently read the Demon Hunter series by Michael Dalton, absolutely adored it, and decided to give this series a try since it's a spin off.
If I hadn't read (and loved) Demon Hunter, I'm not sure what I would have thought of this series; at a guess I'd have given it a pretty good rating but probably not this good. Trying to be objective here:
Good parts: The prose is absolutely servicable. The plot is interesting and moved at a good pace. The characters are intersting and fleshed out decently. The protagonist is sympathetic. There is a decent focus on the relationships between the main characters (which I always like). The combat and sex scenes are well written and not too many of them.
Less good: Just like it says on the tin, a big focus of the setting is cars, and I'm just...not a car guy. I'm as far from being a car guy as it's possible to be! So I'd have preferred almost any other setting. (By contrast, Demon Hunter is, somewhat oddly, much more focused on chemical engineering, which I liked more). As with Demon Hunter, the characters could have been a lot more fully fleshed out; there's minimal character growth and none are particularly three dimensional (and I think Demon Hunter actually did a bit better here).
Still though, it's hard not to let my appreciation of the Demon Hunter series colour by appraisal of this book.
If you read Demon Hunter and want more of the same, this is close enough to work, although I did prefer Demon Hunter. This is sort of "Demon Hunter lite, but with fancy cars". Which wouldn't have been my first choice, but I'll take it.
If you read Demon Hunter and didn't care for it, I doubt this is enough different for it to be worth your time, but again, if you wanted something a bit faster pace, with a bit less plot, and a lot more discussion of turbochargers, well, give it a shot.
If you haven't read Demon Hunter at all, probably start there. I don't think you need to have read it for this book to make sense, but I think the Demon Hunter series is strictly better, and will make you appreciate this book (and series) more.
I've read a few series of Dalton's and have been reluctant to continue trying his works. I've found myself not clicking with his style and feel that certain elements are rushed or non-existent. Considering the genre he writes in, I also think his ability to write good spicy scenes has been lacking and/or just a bit too short & repetitive. This coming from someone who prefers more rather than less sex scenes so long as the characters are sufficiently fleshed out. I don't like one to suffer for the sake of the other, but I do like a healthy helping of spice.
I must say, this is by far my favorite book of Dalton's thus far and if all goes well, my new favorite series of his. The relationship building is a bit shallow, but the girls are interesting if not yet sufficiently built up and the premise is unique enough to keep me wanting to come back each day. I do hope to see the relationships with the MC and with each other grow as well as the main plot. So long as we get more of that instead of all plot progression. I think this will be a nice little series.
As a first act, this is an interesting and somewhat unique story in the genre. And some of Dalton's better writing that I hope to see grow in the future. Worth trying out.
This series is set in the same city as the Demon Hunter series. There are interactions between the two sets of books, but you do not need to read the Demon Hunter books first.
I resisted the temptation to knock off a star because I am REALLY not into cars or racing. I figure I chose to read the books so it would not be reasonable to decide to knock the book because it was what it clearly advertised itself to be.
Jake is a guy who has sort of drifted after he was urged to leave the Naval Academy. He comes to Santa Domingo (a vague SoCal beach town) to get his inheritance and to figure out his brother's death. And he meets Shifter Girls and then discovers his destiny. Which, of course, includes a harem of shifter girls and being able to activate latent shifter girls.
The girls in the harem are very clearly differentiated (which can be a problem with harem books). The sex is well-written and at about the right level. Jake's power increase is reasonable. The racing and car chases are quite intense (and I do wonder at the lack of police response -- damn). The intertwining with Demon Hunter is quite good.
Anyways, looking forward to reading the second book.
I really loved this book. Since the potential problem with the Demon Hunter series as it goes on is that Jimmy is getting too powerful, it's a great idea to keep the setting and shift focus to some new characters. Jake is great main character, and it's refreshing that his goal in the story is to find out what happened to his brother, not to unleash a great demonic power or prevent the end of the world.
Like the other Santo Domingo books, the feel of the place is really strong -- actually even more than in the Demon Hunter books. The crossover with Demon Hunter is good, but this book would totally work if read on its own, as the point is that we are now seeing Jimmy and his girls from outside, not from their own point of view. Jimmy as a terrifyingly powerful force to be appeased, and, particularly, MJ as a sword-wielding borderline psycho, add a lot.
I really enjoyed the changes in tone from the Demon Hunter series to this. It is set in the same universe, same city, and has some of the lesser used characters from that series being the regular characters here. It was great seeing shifters or were creatures being used as well. Yuki is a bit of a trope, as is most of the women in this series, but again, it is a harem series. I do like that the author has some tension between Felicia and Yuki, however, but I wish it would actually go somewhere...it would make it feel a bit more believable. September needs to come quickly. I need to continue this series.
Much excellent material. The 'awakener class' is unique to my experience well thought out and fun. The plot lines are good as is the tie in to the authors 'demon hunter' novels. The instances of explicit content are more than just gratuitous so that pandering to the explicit sexual content does not detract anything from what would be a good novel even without them. Looking forward to the next volume.
Really enjoyed this book. The storyline is excellent and the characters are interesting. I like how they’re all just finding themselves and how it’s all pulling together. Definitely a series I will follow. So far I’ve read about 6 of the authors books and I’ve yet to be disappointed. Highly recommend this book!!
Loved the slow burn and modern world certain. Nice that it's in the same world as she of his others but you won't have to have read them. Looking forward to the sequel.
An absolutely great book. Characters all were top notch. The storyline was something that held your attention from start to finish. Hope it's not a long wait until the next book in this series.
Really a good read! Excellent knowledge on cars and the tuning scene with a lot of shifter and sorcery added with some sex added in. Can’t wait to read Overdrive when it’s out.
So have loved the demon hunter series so this is fun alternative from the first. It gas enough comedic notes to keep you smiling. Enough action to keep you wondering, and enough naughty to keep your heart beating faster.
As with all this authors work, this is a well written adult fantasy adventure!!!! Great the in to. The other story's in this universe!!!! I can't wait to see what comes next in this universe!!!!!
Overall great read with a nice premise on shifters and new take on who they mate with and the sharing of powers between them. Definitely interested to see what happens next so looking forward to the next one.
Solidly entertaining read, I enjoyed the shift in background to the car scene, something I enjoyed a lot in my younger years. And of course it’s magic harem shifters and whatnot, so the dream is alive!
It's a SoL haremlit about cars and shifters. And it is really good at what it does. What's really great is the tie-ins with Demon Hunter which I really enjoyed. NOTE: This is the first book, not the second like Goodreads would have you believe!
A really interesting book. This part goes out to all those people who read Demon Hunter, this book is a continuation of what’s going on in that universe.
A great spin off from the Demon Hunter series. A few cameos but this is its own thing. I don’t really know cars but Mike Dalton sure does! Book 2 needs to hit the starting line quick!
