I love this Bad Seed series by Jory John. He is great with puns and setting up a situation. Of course there is a moral to the story. I thought this was a good story, and for some reason it didn't hit quite like the rest of them. Maybe it's too 'sweet' or something. I would put this last in the series so far.
Cookie wants to be smart, but has anxiety about school and has to find a way to get over that.
Great art, great puns. I can see kids enjoying this.
I finally got my hands on The Smart Cookie, the fifth book in Jory John and Pete Oswald's series about sentient foodstuffs. It's just as cute as the others.
In this case, we're introduced to a cookie with a problem. She appears to have some sort of learning disability; even though she tries hard, she just can't keep up sometimes. So she thinks she's not that smart. But when her teacher, Ms. Biscotti, assigns some creative homework, the cookie gains confidence as she realizes that there are many different ways to be smart.
This is another fun book in The Food Group series.
It has to be extremely difficult to live with 16 roommates in a cookie jar !! But our main cookie was the only one for the job and the cookies teacher Mrs.Biscotti gave them the project of a lifetime. Do anything original and bring it in tomorrow!!
This one didn't grab me as much as some of the others in this series, but it's still sweet and creative, with a great message about finding your niche and gaining confidence. Cute characters, too!
What makes a cookie smart? This cookie found confidence, imagination, and joy through poetry. However, I liked the prior self-reflecting characters in the series better. 3.5 stars.
Another great entry in the Bad Seed series. Can I just say, that this little “smart cookie” is simply adorable! I loved this book because it showed how children have different abilities when it comes to learning and how they learn. Sometimes the approach to teaching children can’t necessarily be executed in a cookie cutter manner(pun intended). Mr. John has such a way with situations and problems that effect children and presents them in simple and heartfelt ways. He adds a dash of humor that is smart and not insulting and pandering. Another great book for the little ones library.
This whole series has been super cute and sweet so it was no surprise that The Smart Cookie is adorable. I really liked the message in this one-everyone is good at something, you just have to find where you shine!
This duo has another winner with the Smart Cookie. Yet another book that I would have loved as a reluctant reader/academic. Kids should be reassured that we all have individual strengths, and with trial and error, hopefully we will encounter our passions along the way.
Jory John does it again with this one! I loved this story about a cookie who hasn’t quite found her niche. She’s not the best is school and she stays up late worrying about it. After a creative assignment, she learns she loves to write poems! Everything kind of falls into place for her then. She isn’t afraid to try new things and realizes that not everybody is good at everything so you should try a lot of things until you find your passions. Everyone can be a “smart cookie” at something. 🍪
This book is about a cookie who lives in a bakery with various other pastries. She doesn't feel like she fits in with the others because she doesn't do well in school: she doesn't get good grades, she doesn't know the answer to questions asked in class and she finds it difficult to focus. However, one day her teacher, Ms. Biscotti, tells the class that they are to present projects the following day in class that need to be original and unique. The cookie feels really nervous about the project and fails at multiple different types of projects before deciding to try to write a poem. She finds that she loves writing and quickly finishes her poem which she is very exited to share with her classmates the next day. Her classmates love her poem and cheer for her after she finishes reading. At the end of the day Ms. Biscotti hands her a note to encourage her to keep writing and, the now smart cookie, performs better in school because she had found confidence in herself and realized that there are multiple ways to be "smart".
I loved this book! The illustrations are engaging and I think kids would love imaging different pastries living in a bakery, going to school and being friends. I feel like all kids could relate to the smart cookie because we have all felt that we are a step behind others in one area or another. This book also teaches the important lesson that there are multiple different types of intelligences and that just because a child doesn't perform well in class, doesn't mean that they aren't smart in other ways. It also teaches that sometimes kids need a special project or untraditional outlet to help them discover and share what they are good at.
I would use this book in a classroom if I had students who struggled with confidence, especially if this seems to be sourcing from difficulties academically. I feel like the smart cookie would be very relatable and beneficial for children going through these difficulties to see that it is normal and not a struggle that is unique to them. I also love that the smart cookie finds that her strong point is writing, poetry specifically, so I think this could also be a great book to read before starting a unit on poetry or just writing in general.
One of the things I love about working with kids is discovering their talent. For some it's an academic subject, but for many, they excel at sports or dance or art. When I find that "thing" about each of my students, I hype it up and that can make a huge difference in their confidence and even their mood at school. Now they are seen for what makes them special.
Jory John's talent is definitely writing picture books that explore universal feelings. The Smart Cookie is now second only to The Good Egg in this series. I read these books as a teacher with my students in mind, yes. But my younger self also finds acknowledgment. And I think that's pretty special.
This book just warmed my heart. Not only is it totally adorable but also funny, has a great message, and I enjoyed the illustrations. I really appreciated the message in this one about how even if you don’t feel smart like everyone else, people can be smart in different ways and at different things. It’s also a beautiful thing to see what specific and unique things each person is “smart” about.
Ms. Biscotti does everything right. These books make me want to plan a whole unit around these lessons- this one would be perfect for students to reflect on their strengths, school experiences, and environments that help them thrive. Would pair perfectly with a beginning of year RC academic choice project!
I enjoyed "The Smart Cookie" but if you want a more meaningful book that covers the same themes, with some of the best illustrations in a kids book I've seen all year, I'd recommend "All the Ways to be Smart" by Davina Bell. Read both books if you can!
This is my least favorite in The Bad Seed series. I like the message that everyone is good at something, but I felt bad for the cookie when their hard work didn't pay off.
My 7 year old daughter’s review: “The Smart Cookie was funny because when I read it the first time, on the couch when I got home from school, I was reading to the middle and I saw a part where it said ‘once I misspelled the word dough, that was rough’ but I said the word ‘rough’ like ‘row’ to sound like ‘dough,’ and it didn’t make sense but it was funny! I learned that even if you can’t think of the answers as fast as the other students or can’t finish your test at the same time as others then it’s ok, you just have to take your time and you’ll get it done eventually. I recommend this book to other kids who like sweets, who are a little shy, and who sometimes gets upset or worried when you’re trying to sleep. If your kid has big emotions you should actually probably read The Smart Cookie.”
Favoritkuu lagi selain the sour grape!!
Sukaabgt sama pesannya!
Favorite quote: "You don't have to have the answers to every question or suddenly be great at everything, all at once. You just need a chance to try all kinds of things, to find out who you are and what you like to do."
This story is a tad more serious than his previous books. In the beginning the Smart Cookie is shy and somewhat self-defeated. Then he learns to try out various activities to find out what he is good at doing and accomplishing. The cartoon illustrations by Pete Oswald are cute and engaging.
