September 29, 2024As I was reading this fourth book in the Barrøy series, the title confused me a little. What did it mean, 'Just a Mother'?
Ingrid Barrøy is the mother in question, but Ingrid, as portrayed in the four books, is never 'just' anything. She is always shown to be larger than life, ready to cavort with danger, taking on everything, fearing nothing.
So I looked at the title in the original Norwegian: 'Bare en Mor'. That seems to be the exact equivalent of the English translation. I had to accept that Roy Jacobson really meant 'just a mother'.
And now, looking back through the book in order to review it, I've come upon a striking episode that has helped me understand the title better. At one point in the story, the extended Barrøy family take a trip on the Salthammer, the small whaling boat Ingrid's nephew has recently bought in order to hunt mink whales (whale hunting was legal in Norway in the 1950s). On board are Ingrid's daughter and the three foster children she has acquired over the years, plus her nephew and his family.
Ingrid herself has never been this far out in the ocean. Most of her life she's simply used a rowboat to travel between Barrøy island and the nearest larger island.
Out at sea, the boat comes on a group of blue whales, and Ingrid and her family climb the rigging to look down at the huge creatures cavorting beneath them. The whales, which are giants compared to mink whales, seem to be a family too, with larger adults surrounded by smaller ones. But they are all bigger than the Salthammer, and all potentially capable of capsizing it. It's a moment of awe and wonder, and fear and trembling, and it leaves Ingrid, for the first time in her brave life, aware of the fragility of everything.
Yes, that's it. Ingrid realises she is 'just a mother' in the face of the vast world and all its doings.
This entire book is a very satisfying episode in the Barrøy series. If there is ever a fifth episode of Ingrid's adventures, I will read it.

Ingrid’s gaze caresses these wonderful creatures, she feels the boat rise and hover, the chilling sensation and the tears, for she will never see this again, life is too short, she knows this, as she also knows that she won’t be able to keep anything for ever, nothing. She sees the disaster before it strikes, she sees the end of all things, life’s fragility. Ingrid has become weak, not from war or life’s tribulations, but from being a mother...
Yes, that's it. Ingrid realises she is 'just a mother' in the face of the vast world and all its doings.
This entire book is a very satisfying episode in the Barrøy series. If there is ever a fifth episode of Ingrid's adventures, I will read it.

Jacobsen lured me in and made me comfortable in the best seat by the kitchen table, in the main house at Barrøy, where I watched the sea and cattle graze. I saw the Barrøy people go about their business. I became complacent. And then Jacobsen pulls the jester out of the deck of cards and I'm reminded of the dangers of island life in the North Sea. Heartbroken. Bittersweet ending (or will there be more?) to the series about Ingrid from Barrøy 💙🌊

I forgot to write a review on this one, omg.
Well, I actually really liked it, although I've forgotten almost all the names of Ingrid's relatives since the last book, which I've read some four years ago, mind you. A list of protagonists on the first page would make a really nice addition, to be honest.
I was glad to be back on the island again and Ingrid's little world was all there.
It was another hypnotic book by Roy Jacobsen and I don't know what else to say.
I'm pretty sure if you were planning on reading this one, you don't really need my retelling.
Just go on and read it. You'll like it.
And btw - it seems the saga is not over yet...

Nuostabioji Barioja ir nedaugiažodžiaujanti Ingrida yra mano saugi vieta, į kurią norisi grįžti. Pasaulis, kuris jau pradeda įsibėgėti, tačiau kuriame vis dar niekur kažkur toli nenubėgsi, todėl yra laiko patirti, išbūti ir išsaugoti.

Zaczęło się dość niepozornie. Bo choć sięgając po pierwszy tom sagi Roya Jacobsena, wiedziałam, że jest to książka nominowana do Międzynarodowej Nagrody Bookera, to spodziewałam się wszystkiego, ale nie tego, co dostałam. Czyli naprawdę spokojnej historii, wypełnionej zapachem wilgotnej ziemi i mgły. A jednak coś w tej historii jest, że nie można się od niej oderwać. Bo jeśli choć raz czytelnik postawił swoją stopę na wyspie Barrøy, to ta już na zawsze pozostanie w jego sercu.
„Tylko matka” to już czwarty tom tej niezwykłej sagi. Niezwykłej, bo choć ma w sobie tę skandynawską surowość, którą charakteryzują się książki z tego regionu, to ma w sobie również ogromną dozę spokoju i przyciąga czytelnika w tylko sobie znany sposób. Po podróży przez prawie cały kraj Ingrid w końcu wraca na Barrøy – swoją rodzinną wyspę, której jest niekwestionowaną królową. Jednak choć życie mieszkańców Norwegii powoli się stabilizuje, to niedawno zakończona wojna jeszcze długo będzie rzucała swój cień na cały kraj. W tym samym czasie na Barrøy przypływa Mathias, pięcioletni chłopczyk, który w tajemniczych okolicznościach traci ojca. Ingrid decyduję się przygarnąć chłopca.
Ingrid to jedna z lepiej wykreowanych bohaterek literackich. Do bólu prawdziwa, oszczędna w emocjach, a jednak można odnieść czasami wrażenie, że wewnętrznie ona wręcz kipi od nich. Bo choć teraz na wyspie znajduje się coraz więcej mężczyzn i można momentami odczuć, co zresztą mówi też sam autor, że Ingrid jest królową wyspy jedynie na papierze. Natomiast przy tak silnej postaci, wszyscy mężczyźni w jej otoczeniu stopniowo bledną i zdają się wtapiać w tło. O takich bohaterkach aż chce się czytać. W tej części Ingrid jest już dojrzałą kobietą, matką i panią na wyspie. Przechodzenie z nią przez kolejne etapy jej życia, wojnę i w końcu jej zakończenie to była niesamowita przygoda. To będzie jedna z moich ulubionych bohaterek literackich.
Jest to proza budowana słowo po słowie, przecinek po przecinku z detali. Ona nie zachwyca akcją. Nie uświadczycie tam też wielu dramatycznych wydarzeń. Ona ma zachwycać swoim niezwykłym liryzmem, budowaną strona po stronie intymnością. To tak jakby Jacobsen całymi dniami siedział pochylony nad płótnem i cienkim pędzelkiem malował obraz. Gdzie każde machnięcie pędzlem jest ważne, a chwila nieuwagi może zniszczyć cały obraz, całą magię tego miejsca.
Jeśli jesteście miłośnikami literatury pięknej i nie do końca trafiają do was powieści obyczajowe, to ta seria może stać się waszym comfort read. Bo choć Jacobsen nie stroni od trudnych tematów, to potrafi je opisać w taki sposób, że cokolwiek by się nie działo, wyspa Barrøy otula nas kocem i uspokaja. Bo takie właśnie są te książki i „Tylko matka” – kojące, muśnięte jesiennym wiatrem i pachnące otaczającym wyspę morzem. I nawet jeśli z początku te książki wydadzą się wam niepozorne, to one w was zostaną i po czasie, będziecie do nich wracać, by ponownie znaleźć to ukojenie i niesamowity klimat, który unosi się na Barrøy.

En serie som virkelig er verdt å lese.
Jeg er helt tom for ord etter å ha lest den ferdig.
Det er sjelden man leser bøker som er så gjennomført gode. Man kjenner stormene på øya på kroppen og man kjenner man blir tøffere selv der man står i motvind og blest.
Dette er slik livet var langs kysten. Dette er vår historie. Vi bør lese og minnes disse glemte menneskene og livene.

Jak skała
Roy Jacobsen kolejny raz zabiera swoich czytelników na skaliste wybrzeża Barrøy, gdzie od czasu "Białego morza" niewiele się zmieniło. Rytm życia wyspiarzy wytyczają pory roku, połowy ryb, zbiór jaj eredonów. Niegdyś wyludniona wyspa tętni życiem i śmiechem dzieci. Jednak ani w życiu, ani w powieściach Jacobsena sielanka nie może trwać zbyt długo.
Do tej pory Ingrid, główna bohaterka serii, była przedstawiana jako niezłomna wojowniczka, która bez wahania stawiała czoło wszelkim przeciwnościom losu. Nawet jeżeli w jej życiu pojawiały się załamania, zawsze potrafiła przekuć je w motor, który napędzał ją do działania. "Tylko matka" ukazuje jej przemianę i pierwsze poważne wyłomy w zbroi, która chroniła ją przez wiele lat. Skomplikowane mechanizmy macierzyństwa i wszystkie nieoczywiste emocje, które mu towarzyszą, w tworzą w powieści tło nie mniej istotne niż opisy przyrody, odgrywającej ogromne znaczenie w całej opowieści.
W prozie Jacobsena niezmiennie zachwyca mnie efekt, który udało mu się osiągnąć – z jednej strony wydaje się, że w jego powieściach niewiele się dzieje a narracja zdominowana jest przez opisy przyrody i prozaicznych czynności. Jednocześnie nie można pozbyć się odczucia intensywności, zwłaszcza w tym, co nie zostało napisane wprost. Sposób poprowadzenia bohaterów, ich nieoczywiste wybory, niejasne motywacje intrygują i fascynują.
Ingrid z Barrøy niezmiennie pozostaje jedną z najbardziej nietuzinkowych, niezwykłych bohaterek literackich, a sama wyspa z pozoru surowa i nieprzyjazna często zmienia się w ostoję, chroniącą przed zewnętrznym światem. Proza Roya Jacobsena podzieli czytelników – do części z nich nie przemówi ani fabuła, ani bohaterowie, ale będą też tacy, którzy bez reszty wsiąkną w przedstawiony świat i codzienne życie wyspiarzy. Mam nadzieję, że tych drugich będzie jak najwięcej.

Proza Roya Jacobsena podzieli czytelników – do części z nich nie przemówi ani fabuła, ani bohaterowie, ale będą też tacy, którzy bez reszty wsiąkną w przedstawiony świat i codzienne życie wyspiarzy. Mam nadzieję, że tych drugich będzie jak najwięcej.

Jenom Matka je čtvrtým dílem ságy o norském ostrově. Je to tak trošku jako Matrix, i když ne tak šílený - jednička byla pecka jak z Lodoicei seychelské, což absolutně nevím co je, ale můj exkurz na gůgl mi právě vysvětlil, že to je palma s největší peckou. Dvojka pak byla menší pecka a třetí ještě menší. Teď ale s odstupem času nedokážu porovnat jestli tenhle díl je menší pecka než třetí díl, nebo jestli je stejná nebo dokonce větší. Psát kvalitní literární recenze není vůbec jednoduchý, teď bych se musel podívat na to, co jsem napsal o třetím díle a pak to porovnat a na to nemáte čas ani vy, ani já. Tak to necháme.
Jedem dál - Ingrid furt bydlí na ostrově, furt tam chodí dělat věci, který tam určitě dělali i v jedničce, dojí, chytaj ryby a sází a sklízí věci a tak dále pana krále. Akorát je teď starší. Ostatní ostrované, resp. někteří z nich, se stěhují do měst a píšou Ingrid o vymoženostech jako je třeba pračka, smart plotna, autodráha a pánev a čtenář tak sleduje střet generací a jak to s Ingrid celý cloumá. Její děti jezdí do města do školy a vrací se na víkendy na ostrov a tam třeba nemaj smart plotnu.
No abych to neprotahoval - šarm jedničky tvořen absolutní izolací a strohostí ostrova se v dalších dílech vytrácel tak dlouho díky rostoucímu kontaktu s civilizací mimo ostrov, až se vytratil skoro úplně. I tak 6/10, pětku si taky přečtu, ale budu u toho určitě mít zase hlemzy. Naskle.

Tetralogia Barrøy to bardzo kameralna i klimatyczna historia rodziny Barrøy, której towarzyszymy przez wiele pokoleń. Żyją oni na niewielkiej norweskiej wyspie. Na kartach powieści możemy obserwować ich codzienność, a także towarzyszyć w przełomowych momentach.
W 4-części "Tylko matka" przyglądamy się kolejnym losom Ingrid, która zostaje prawną opiekunką chłopca Mathiasa. To bardzo spokojna historia, w której niewiele się dzieje. Uwielbiam ten surowy klimat i charakternych bohaterów, jednak ta część nie wywołała we mnie większych emocji.
To bardzo oszczędna pozycja o macierzyństwie, codzienności i życiu w powojennej Norwegii. Silna i odważna Ingrid w tej części przede wszystkim jest matką.
"Dostrzega katastrofę, zanim się wydarzy, widzi rozpad wszystkiego, kruchość życia. Ingrid stała się słaba - nie przez wojnę czy życie, ani nawet przez utratę miłości, tylko przez to, że jest matką, a głębia ukazuje jej ten nowy, drżący lęk."
Nie będzie to moja ulubiona część (najbardziej lubię "Niewidzialnych" i "Oczy z Rigela"), ale polecam tę serię, jeśli lubicie powolne i klimatyczne historie.
Tetralogia Barrøy to bardzo kameralna i klimatyczna historia rodziny Barrøy, której towarzyszymy przez wiele pokoleń. Żyją oni na niewielkiej norweskiej wyspie. Na kartach powieści możemy obserwować ich codzienność, a także towarzyszyć w przełomowych momentach.
W 4-części "Tylko matka" przyglądamy się kolejnym losom Ingrid, która zostaje prawną opiekunką chłopca Mathiasa. To bardzo spokojna historia, w której niewiele się dzieje. Uwielbiam ten surowy klimat i charakternych bohaterów, jednak ta część nie wywołała we mnie większych emocji.
To bardzo oszczędna pozycja o macierzyństwie, codzienności i życiu w powojennej Norwegii. Silna i odważna Ingrid w tej części przede wszystkim jest matką.
"Dostrzega katastrofę, zanim się wydarzy, widzi rozpad wszystkiego, kruchość życia. Ingrid stała się słaba - nie przez wojnę czy życie, ani nawet przez utratę miłości, tylko przez to, że jest matką, a głębia ukazuje jej ten nowy, drżący lęk."
Nie będzie to moja ulubiona część (najbardziej lubię "Niewidzialnych" i "Oczy z Rigela"), ale polecam tę serię, jeśli lubicie powolne i klimatyczne historie.

Jeg er så glad for å ha fått oppleve disse bøkene og så trist fordi det tok slutt. Men håper det kommer minst en bok til. Jeg blir helt satt ut av utviklingen i Norge bare over noen få generasjoner, hvordan vi lever nå og den rikdommen Norge har hatt. Men har det vært udelt positivt lurer jeg på, når jeg drømmer om et liv som ligner på livet på Barrøy. Særlig beskrivelsen av livet i blokk i Oslo syns jeg var HELT fantastisk beskrevet.

Selv om jeg har lest de tre første bøkene i samme serie var det vanskelig å huske alle personene. Boka kunne med hell konsentrert seg om litt færre -eller hatt et «familietre» som viser hvem som er hvem på innsiden av permen. Jeg er ikke overbevist om at jeg skal lese bok fem om Barrøy-folket når den (sikkert) kommer.

The Barrøy Chronicles was initially a trilogy, but luckily we got a fourth book, and maybe even we will get a fifth.
This isn't the best of the Chronicles, an accolade I would bestow on The Unseen, but readers are so invested in the life of Ingrid and island life, that it is unmissable, and still hugely enjoyable.
I have saved this, as I am currently travelling around the islands close to Lofoten, and spent a few days on the island of Træna where the islanders gom on holiday to.
The story spans the 1950s, during which the tough self-sufficient lifestyle of the Barrøy familygoes through change brought about by the effect of the wartime German occupation and the first slow steps towards transformation.
Ingrid's life changes further.. after his wife disappears, the skipper of the boat that does milk collections and deliveries, Johannes Hartvigsen, takes his 5 year old son Mattis with him on his rounds, though he gets badly seasick. One stormy day he leaves him on Barrøy while he works, sails off into the distance, never to return. Unwittingly, Ingrid has become mother to another child in addition to Kaja, a young girl who is an orphan from the war.
Life is somewhat less harsh than before the war, little luxuries, such as a holiday make life more bearable, the island dialect has got closer to Norwegian, and young residents are able to leave for futures elswhere.
It is another wonderful story of a woman, and her family, continuing to lead an unorthodox life as the rest of the world seems to be leaving them behind.

Ši knyga man buvo siurprizas. Buvau tikra, kad skaitau trilogiją. Mėgavausi kiekviena dalimi, todėl atradusi, kad yra ir ketvirta knyga, nekantravau tęsti Ingridos istoriją.
Ši dalis gali pasirodyti niekuo neįspūdinga, ji apie gyvenimą po karo, apie naujas tragedijas, apie buvimą mama. Todėl ir šįkart pavadinime telpa tiek daug.
Roy Jacobsen tikrai užburia savo rašymo stiliumi, mažai su kuo galiu sulyginti. Labai nudžiugčiau jei sužinočiau, kad yra ir penkta knyga.
"O Ingrida žvilgsniu glosto nuostabiąsias būtybes, jau šešias, junta, kaip laivas atsiplėšia ir sklendžia, jaučia žvarbą ir ašaras, nes šito niekada nebeišvys, gyvenimas per trumpas, ir ji tai žino, žinanti ir tai, kad nieko nepasilaikys amžiams, visiškai nieko.
Regi katastrofą prieš jai ištinkant, regi visa ko griūtį, gyvenimo trapumą. Ingrida tapusi silpna, ne nuo karo ar gyvenimo, ar praradusi Aleksandro meilę, bet dėl to, kad yra motina, štai tokią naują baimę jai atveria gelmė."

Sista boken av fyra i en serie om Ingrid. Historien utspelar sig mestadels på en liten ö i nord Norge under och strax efter andra världskriget. Fint skriven med lätt språk, bra miljöbeskrivningar och en stark berättelse om denna starka kvinna.

Fjerde bok i serien om familien på Barrøy. Jeg synes den varierer mye fra det fantastiske til det ufokuserte. Roy Jacobsen skriver gode karakterer som oppleves genuine, noe som gir historien et driv.

Veldig glad e har fullført den fjerde boka. Va litt bekymra i starten for at den ikkje skulle runde av alt på en bra måte, but boy it did:) anbefale serien

Liiga pikad vahed on olnud erinevate osade lugemisel, mitte midagi ei mäleta varasematest. Lugesingi põhimõtteliselt puhtalt lehelt, õnneks autor siiski püüab põgusalt lugejale meenutada olnut. Aga Norra üksildased ja nurgatagused saared ja elu neil, keerulised suhted inimeste vahel ja karm loodus, see on mulle ikka meeldinud.

Another beautiful instalment in the series. All the novels have been subtle and melancholy, but this one was downright devastating while still managing to tell the sad story in Roy Jacobsen's understated style. As a dialogue lover, I'm surprised that I enjoy these dialogue-less books, but they cast a spell over me every time.

It's still not bad with its dramatic events but for me it's clearly the weakest link in Barrøy novels. If you haven't read previous parts you will struggle to know who is who. You will probably struggle anyway even if you have read them.
