Torn Heart by Emma Hamm is the 4th book in the Dragon of Umbra series. It's a dragon romantasy and gave me everything I expected from an Emma Hamm story, plus more. This one had me so emotionally invested, and I don't know how I'm going to say goodbye to these characters after the 5th book.
Without spoiling, this story focuses around Abraxas and his grief while trying to cope with a major loss. If you've read any of this series, then you know Dracomaquia was a goal, and he finally made it. But at what cost?
The story gives you elves, dragon shifters, action, found family, and romance! This one was definitely super emotional. Loved it and recommend this series completely.

I guess I can say I was anxious to start this story the minute I finished the last book. I knew that Emma Hamm wouldn't let Lore be dead for real, but my poor heart couldn't take the pain it caused on Abraxas.
I'd say this book can be divided into two parts: the first part where Abraxas and Lore were apart, and then the second part when they were reunited.
Reading Abraxas' POV on the first part was soul crushing. It killed me to read how he wanted to end his life to be with Lore again, and how he was just holding up because of his kids. And despite the fact that I knew who Tanis and Rowan were, when Tanis started to talk about bringing another crimson dragon to the world, I'm not going lie, I thought she was proposing to Abraxas to mate her so they can have more eggs. (Meaning I totally forgot about the eggs safely hidden in the cave).
I knew that Abraxas wouldn't agree with such a thing, yet I was stressed.
As for Lore, her coming back was very confusing to all, specially when she looked and felt different due to her new powers. And I have to say I'm so excited to find out more about them!
We then found out something I was already guessing: which is Margaret would become a problem. This book doesn't deal with that at all, so I'm excited to see how this story will end, as I was wondering how the plot would go forward after the king had been defeated on the third book. I mean, things can be easily done.
This book to me felt very much like a bridge between the third and the fifth book. Although it's not as character driven as the last one, as we have more plots to explore - the return of the dragons; Lore's powers changing; the baby dragons growing up faster than ever. It was a story to deepen the worldbuilding and story. The real action, and I'm guessing, the big fight will be dealt with on the last book.
One last thing I want to say it's that I would love to have a story about Allura, the siren. From the moment she showed up I was down.

Loved It !!!
I completely shattered at the ending of Brave Heart. I never knew this much of heartache and pain since I had started to read but Emma made me cry. Reading Abraxas POV are painful and heartbreaking. But i knew that Lore would come back to him and their children somehow even if to fight death itself. This book takes part in Abraxas native home where he took his children to give them the life their desired, only to find there was more secrets and pasts than he knew. I think I've patience to wait for the final book in the series but definitely not ready to say goodbye!!

Helloooo babies, it’s Samhain!!! And what better way to celebrate the veil thinning between worlds than diving headfirst into the next book that’s been haunting my TBR for, what, three years?! Damn, I’m anxious and giddy. I missed these characters so much I could bite something. I’m ready to see what’s next for Lore and Abraxas — my emotional support dragon and his chaotic halfbreed queen. Will they finally hatch the eggs?! OMFG yes please, give me dragon babies immediately!
…But Lore, sweetheart, can we not start this book with you acting like a jealous martyr again? She’s out here judging Zeph and Beauty for being “young and mortal,” as if that’s a crime. Girl. They’re doing their best. Beauty’s injured and Zeph doesn’t even know how to make camp. Maybe — and hear me out — the problem is that you’re sexually frustrated and mad you can’t climb your dragon right now. Thankfully, she catches herself and realizes they’re not the problem. Growth, finally.
See??? Abraxas is such a sweetheart. My ancient disaster of a man, trying to balance chivalry, instinct, and unholy lust. I adore how self-aware he is — he knows he’s overprotective and still can’t stop himself. Also, his “strict dragon code” is giving “I’m a gentleman but barely” energy, and I love that for him.
And then the misunderstanding with Draven and Lore? Oh, gods. You could feel the temperature drop ten degrees. Abraxas ready to burn kingdoms over a misread situation — classic dragon move. Their posturing? Hilarious. Two alpha idiots circling each other like teenagers in a locker room. Meanwhile, Lore is just there, exhausted, probably wondering why men have so many feelings.
Poor baby’s stress levels are through the roof. They’re at a witch’s house, everyone’s suspicious, and he’s spiraling like a mother hen with anxiety issues. “Sleep” is a concept he no longer acknowledges. The man needs a therapist and a nap.
And when the tension finally snaps — holy hell — the sex scene?

Abraxas, sir… you are a demon. A polite, brooding, surprisingly considerate demon.
Then that line:
That’s *so* Abraxas — cynical, logical, thinks he’s above fate. Sweetie, you’re in a fantasy novel. That’s like saying “what’s the worst that could happen?” before the dragon egg hatches.
And speaking of eggs… THEY HATCHED.
THEY. HATCHED.
My gods, they’re parents!!! The chaos! The joy! The baby dragons calling Lore “mother”? I cried. Abraxas immediately turning into the world’s most paranoid dad? Perfection. He’s arguing about “dragon traditions” while Lore is like, “Shut up and let the girls breathe, you scaled control freak!”
Domestic dragon drama at its finest.

I love these fiery little gremlins already. Hyperion is my new baby. The sass! The protectiveness! The tiny roar! Someone give that emerald menace a medal.
And then the final battle…

EPIC doesn’t even cut it. Lore became an avatar of vengeance — a goddess forged from moonlight, magic, and fury. She was the storm. The prophecy came full circle like destiny laughing in Abraxas’s face.
And of course — because it’s him — he had to be stubborn and dramatic and leave. WHY?! WHY, YOU SCALY EMOTIONAL IDIOT?!
I’m screaming, crying, throwing things.
Now I need the next book. Immediately.
This book was pure magic and madness from start to finish. Lore reached full goddess mode, Abraxas hit new highs in protective chaos, and the baby dragons? Adorable murder beans. The action was cinematic, the sex unholy, and the ending??? Emotional carnage — exactly what I signed up for.
If Abraxas doesn’t fix his mess in the next book, I’m marching into the author’s world myself. But for now?
I’m vibrating with excitement.

He was frustrated with himself, acting like an animal who needed to rut. He was a dragon, and they had a strict code of honor between the lot of them. Women were to be treated with respect. Everyone was, if he were closely following the tenets of what made a dragon “good”. Yes, their companions were lesser in his mind than her, but he’d take care of them.
Not only because she would want him to, but because he enjoyed their company and the amusement they brought to his life.

I really enjoyed this book. This one is probably the most emotional one of the series. It was absolutely gut wrenching seeing Abraxas struggle with his grief, his mental health, and suicidal thoughts. I cried so so hard.
I also am SO glad that Abraxas and Lore reunited at an acceptable % of the story. I absolutely hate when authors keep the main characters separated for more than half of the book. Here we get a reunion at 40% and boy was I pleased with that. A reunion by the way that had me shedding lots of happy tears.
I however yet again with every book in that series had trouble with the pace. It dragged on a little bit when certain situations could have been resolved sooner.
I also had a lot of trouble not getting annoyed with Lore.
Abraxas has been suicidal for 6 months and after only a week of being reunited Lore complains that he “hovers” and that she’s bored. So she runs away and makes him worried sick! I was like what the actual fuck is wrong with this woman?
I always found Lore to be very reactive and immature and always jumping to conclusions.
Abraxas is soooo patient with her. Ugh! I love him!
I also was disappointed that sadly a lot of the female characters in this series are very unlikeable. Beauty always get bitchy when she doesn’t get her way. Nyx is so smug and arrogant. You’d think all the wisdom she acquired would have made her less immature and self centred. And don’t get me started with Lore.
The male characters on the other end are amazing. Abraxas is so patient, strong, and just a beautiful soul. Hyperion has my whole heart, and I love Draven even more.
Despite all that I absolutely love this story and cannot wait to see how it all ends in the final book which I’m going to preorder right fucking now!

An Emotional, Mental, and Powerful Journey. I technically read this in one sitting, but I got excited opening the book upon release, it was highly anticipated that I found out if Lore and Abraxas were finally reunited again. I got way more than that and it goes without saying, this latest book is vastly different than the previous ones. It seems the greatest battle in the story is far more complex than that leviathan (which I had to Google, amazing but terrifying). The greatest battle was through their hearts and minds. I just loved how they were able to overcome their self-doubt and struggles to finally become stronger and fulfilled in the end. This whole book was just great character progression for both leads and it made me laugh and cry just to experience the myriad of emotions they went through to be together again. I loved all the dragons, old and new, I won’t spoil anything but my favorite was their family scene together when Abraxas, Lore, Nyx, and Hyperion went to the top of the mountain to watch the stars. I loved it so much and it really cemented how their lives were all intertwined as one family. This was such a beautiful and fun read, and I can’t wait for the finale this summer. Until then, I’ll be dreaming of elves and dragons and far-off kingdoms.

Oh my lord…the feels in this one!!
From the gut wrenching ending of book 3 I have been dying to get my paws on this one. I mean come on!! She comes back to life!!
Anyway this one was a huge tear jerker. Unfortunately we’ve all lost loved ones and know that empty whole they leave in our lives but Abraxas has lost half of himself and has two children to raise.
Once on the isle of Dracomaquia the surprises just keep on coming…and then back to war? Ughhhhh I need book 5 now stat…pretty please.
A m/f romantic fantasy with fated mates that even death can not part, loss, grief, children, dragons and elves. This story takes you out of the conflict and war of Umbral kingdom and into a forgotten world where our new dragon family can heal and strengthen.

Such a good read! One of my favorite parts of Torn Heart is the family dynamics between Abraxas, Lore, Hyperion, and Nyx. We only saw a few of these interactions in the previous installment. This book did not take place in Umbra, so getting to see the dragon home was interesting as well as meeting new characters. There was no big bad guy in this book, and it definitely felt like a bridge between the first three and what is going to be the final installment.

What an amazing story. It gets better and better. The artwork is amazing and the story is magnificent.
We see lore come back into the world but not as herself and you follow her into her journey of why and who she is now. It’s a great bout of finding ones self, being with the ones we love most and not pushing them away. Lore goes through a lot, and you see her just being (or trying to be) normal after ending the large issues at home.
And the dragon home abraxas runs off too is so beautiful I want to live there or know where Emma got the idea of the fallen land.

Okay so this book was better than the second and third, however still found typos and random plot points skipped over while other less important ones were discussed. I also got really sick of Abraxas constantly saying how he has nothing to live for. Like you were so set on restarting the dragon race and now your going to abandon his kids? I don’t know.
The only time I like this book is when the uprising or rebellion is talked about.
Ps. What did she think was going to happen leaving Margret it charge. Smh

Adventures!
Excitement! Our favorite dragon is doing his best to hold it together while wrangling two very eager littles. There is more new characters and a whole new place to explore, well new to us. I want to say more on it but i must refrain or it will ruin it for all. This book is full of adventures that I was greatly anticipating, as all of Hamm's earlier books have so willingly given. I am very mich looking forward to the next book to see where her imagination takes us this time.

All the feels!
I was so excited to read Torn Heart. I have enjoyed this series and loved seeing the characters grow throughout the books. I actually cried at the end of book 3, so I was very happy to have the 4th book out and learn that Lore was back!
I absolutely loved the journey through this book, seeing more from Abraxas' POV, and enjoying the laughs along the way.
My only negative is that now I have to wait 6 months to finish the series. Can't wait!
I was so excited to read Torn Heart. I have enjoyed this series and loved seeing the characters grow throughout the books. I actually cried at the end of book 3, so I was very happy to have the 4th book out and learn that Lore was back!
I absolutely loved the journey through this book, seeing more from Abraxas' POV, and enjoying the laughs along the way.
My only negative is that now I have to wait 6 months to finish the series. Can't wait!

Just Ok
This book seemed to drag on a bit more for my liking. Lots of the same fears over and over again and lots of wallowing which I didn't enjoy. I'm glad for the ending here but would have loved more content around the children's training, growing up and the town on the dragon island. It advances the story so that was good but it was a struggle at times when the previous books haven't been. Let's see where the next one takes us.

I give this whole series a 4* for the entertainment value. It’s a unique idea and a fun read. This one in particular felt a his slow and angsty to me compared to the others. The writing style and description left something to be desired for me. It’s not amazing quality writing but if you can get past that the story is fun and intriguing.

Lore found what she was looking for. However the. Ost of using her magic to save the ship can with some seizure.
I love that she was reunited with her family and she was able to help the grimson dragon to wake up and push to be born.
Now that she has broken the wall in her mind and master the control she needs. Let see what final chapter for Lore has in store for us.

Burning Magic and Survival
Once again Emma Hamm has an adventurous story that pulls at the heart strings. I enjoy this mate bond and the drama that does not seem to let Lore go. She is very determined, although this book made it feel like she lost herself. The character evolution follows nicely with the plot. I can’t wait to read book 5.

Read this! Read the whole series. I love it. It’s a beautiful and unique story that just keeps getting better. I am terrible at leaving reviews so I usually just rate books but if I can convince one person that sees this to read the series and they love it as much as I do I will be very happy.

AMAZING READ
I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for the 5th and final book of this series!!! The first 4 books are filled with happiness, strife, grief and overcoming of personal obstacles. I can’t wait to see what happens next. Waiting impatiently for Taloned Heart!!

Maybe a 3.5 because I've managed to keep reading these and this was my favorite book of them all. It was the least "plot" type story, but I enjoyed seeing Lore and Abraxas in a different setting that didn't involve them constantly running for their lives or into battle. I did find the whole power situation with Lore interesting, but it was definitely Lore and Abraxas that kept me going. Looking forward to the next book to see what happens with Umbra.

Such a great 4th installment! Lore’s story isn’t done but Emma doesn’t leave us with a wild cliffhanger this time! I loved every second of this one and cannot wait for the conclusion that’s about to be epic!

There was not one moment I was confident I knew what the hell was going on. It wasn’t the plot that was confusing but the “why” & “how” of it all that was incomplete in its conception & delivery beyond the bounds of acceptable levels of disbelief inherent to stories of magic & dragons.

I enjoyed the introduction of a few new characters in this book, and the main plot points, however…I feel like the entire book could have been a few lengthy chapters in the final book. I still enjoyed it, but found the pacing to be a bit slow, and I kept hoping for more meaningful events.

Such a Good Series
This series just gets better and better as it goes on. When I started this series, I was just looking for a fluffy dragon romance, and this isn’t really that, but it’s still soo good.
Lore is a wonderful main character. Abraxas is delightfully gruff and utterly devoted to lore. This book dealt with grief and loss, sickness and uncertainty. Book four was heavier than the other books in the series, but so wonderful for developing these characters even more.

She's done it again folks. This 4th book of The Dragon of Umbra series has sent me on an emotional rollercoaster and I'm not mad about it. Prepare yourselves.
