Jack is our hero. He has his own trust issues but seems to be working through them. Jack is back in Seaport to take care of his mother after she fell down the stairs. It's funny that he calls it home but thinks he doesn't belong there anymore. Jack is a fireman, and Seaport's fire department is a volunteer-only firehouse, so that it wouldn't be his profession. Since Jack was a kid, he has always wanted to be a fireman like his dad. He has worked hard to be one in New York City.
