A stately manor, one peculiar groundskeeper, and untimely death set the stage for this thrilling and unexpected tale . As a twenty-nine year old married mother of two, Greer Tipton has spent nearly half her life trying to leave the past behind her. Yet she finds herself faced with reexamining her teenage years after agreeing to be interviewed by a biographer.
Greer’s recollection of events is equally as dark as it is compelling. Her harrowing story is fraught with lies, heartbreaking revelations, and an unknown enemy terrorizing her family’s beloved home - Langley Estates . Young Greer must find the answers she so desperately seeks, while also navigating the emotions of first love, loss, and an inherent mistrust of her own sanity.
The reader will be left wondering who, if anyone , can be trusted. Can we as human beings even trust ourselves?
Greer Tipton, a married twenty-nine year-old mother of two little girls, has been sitting for quite some time telling the story of her life to a biographer. She’s been trying to forget many of the details involved, but at the request of the biographer, rehashes her life’s story with all of the gruesome details as she lived them. She lost her mother at a very young age, and grew up with an absent father and a grandfather she adored. When her great-uncle passes, her grandfather goes to live with his sister, Greer’s great-aunt CeeCee, who she loves and who loves her like the child she never had. First, her grandfather unexpectedly passes away. Greer is devastated, she lost her confidante, who she always was able to talk to, and who always heard her. When the news came on Christmas Eve that Aunt CeeCee had died in a car crash trying to drive through a terrible snowstorm, Greer was crushed. She and her father left their home to be caretakers for CeeCee and her late husband’s estate, the Langley. The traumatic events that shaped Greer’s life continue there, including more lies and other malicious events happening within the estate and possibly its long-time employees. She swears she sees a person in the dark and something in the empty cabin on the property that both disappear, so she begins to question herself, believing she must be imagining things, while not knowing who to trust.
“Firefly Lies” was a rollercoaster of events and emotions, extremely well-written and intensely readable. The character descriptions are fleshed-out and well-rounded, and the scenes are vivid and palpable. I could easily conceptualize Greer in her huge bedroom, feel her looking out at the darkness from her favorite place, the window seat, or reading in the comfortable chair by the fireplace, or browsing through the library. It’s clear that her grandfather, Aunt CeeCee, and her deceased husband, Greer’s great-uncle, were well-known and beloved all through the town. I love the character of Thomas, and the tender way he responds to Greer when he sees she is in pain, and how members of the staff rally around Greer like a real family. The plot flows well through every exceptionally readable page to the stunning climax, and the story was beautifully resolved by the author, Morgan Matthews. This is a masterful novel, and I highly recommend it to all fans of thrillers and murder mysteries—you’ll be captivated until the very end.
I’d like to thank Reedsy Discovery, Morgan Matthews, and Lagniappe Press, LLC for the ability to read and review this ARC.
This was such an engaging and inviting read. The mystery and suspense of the narrative felt vibrant and alive and delved into themes that felt very relatable and relevant to modern-day true crimes. The twists and turns in the story kept me invested in this narrative, as the author’s writing style kept this mystery feeling very mature yet in a genre that many readers would classify as “clean” mysteries. In that regard, the author crafts a narrative that focuses solely on the mystery and not on any elements of more adult narratives that would make this a heated and passionate read instead.
Yet what drew me into the narrative was the characters, especially when it came to the storytelling perspective. The author’s choice to not only jump back and forth between the past and the present but from the POV of both the biographer and the protagonist of this mystery was so heartfelt and honest in a way. The way biographer was able to bring an outside perspective to the story while also connecting with their “subject”. At the same time, the protagonist kept readers in suspense and brought an emotional depth to the narrative, making this story such a unique reading experience.
The Verdict
Captivating, thoughtful, and exhilarating, author Morgan Matthews’s “Firefly Lies” is a must-read mystery and suspense read of 2022. The drama, twists, and rich character development will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The final revelations about what happened to this family and the true villain of this tale will shock many readers, while also keeping readers emotionally invested in these characters.
I was on a roller coaster ride of emotions from excited, entertained, charmed, curious, enthralled and sad. My metic of a great author is when a story is told effortlessly coaching the reader though all those emotions. This author achieved that and did it with an smoothness and ease that made reading this book a pure pleasers. Can’t wait fir the next one!
Another excellent read by Morgan Matthews, she did not disappoint once again. I enjoyed how the book is told in two perspectives, the author and the main character. With excellent character development and a mysterious twist. This is definitely a page turner for sure.
Wow! This novel is really good. My only question is about the italics. They are all over the book! Maybe it is an e-book error. Very distracting. Firefly Lies is a good story with an ending you won’t see coming.
I was disappointed in this book. It was very slow going. The story was thin until the plot began to unfold. Then I just kept reading to finish it. It lacked depth and detail.
