Lords in Disguise #6

The Duke is Back

A wedding is in her future

Miss Sophie Payton might be engaged, but she’s not in love. The only man who ever captured her heart was Phillip Grayson—a soldier who was slain a year ago. But when her stepmother decrees that Sophie will marry Phillip’s cousin, the new Duke of Harlowe, Sophie’s in no position to refuse.

A funeral is in his past

The ton thinks Phillip Grayson died a hero on the battlefields of Europe, but he’s very much alive. While he spent the last year recuperating from his grave injuries in secret at his friend’s estate, his brother was murdered, his cousin took over the title of duke, and the woman he loved—the one he dreamed of every night—apparently moved on without him.

But the duke is back

Phillip has returned to London intent on reclaiming his brother’s title and making the people who killed him pay. He doesn’t understand how Sophie could have betrayed him; she can’t forgive him for letting her believe he was dead. And yet neither can deny that the attraction between them burns hotter than ever. Nothing is as it seems, but perhaps the truth can save them…if it doesn’t kill them first.

Okay so I was super scared of this one but it turns out I loved the angst bc we barely had to deal with the villains towards the end and there was sexy kidnapping BUT Bowman has stuck to the typical third act breakup formula for every book in this series and someone needs to tell her to stop that! There was no need for them to break up in this book my GOD each breakup gets resolved at 97% in these books and then the book is over and we never get to see the characters be happy. She’s also made the sex scenes pretty similar PLUS every one the hero licks the heroines ear and I just…I’m onto you Valerie.

Other things that haven’t made sense for three books now: No epilogues, one sex scene each when the first books had multiple, and wild time jumps in between books. They should’ve been given like #0, #0.5 #0.75 bc I’m pretty sure these las three books happen before the actual first books in the series. In layman’s terms, it’s like the Star Wars prequels lmao…but they don’t match the numbers. Apparently Bowman asked newsletter subscribers if they wanted “clean romance” and this was her jumping off point?? Halfway through a series??? Plot twist her readers said NO lmao. Just very confusing.

And while I aired a lot of grievances about the series, I did greatly enjoy this book. I like the series as a whole, especially the premises of the first few books. Bowman clear follows a formula for pacing, but her plot setups are pretty unique. I binged the series after reading and loving her novella in Duke in a Box, and don’t regret it. I liked the narrator of the first three books so I’d probably reread if I wanted the nobleman disguised as servant trope, but the narrator for the last three books is nearly unintelligible and hhhhwispy so this is probably my only read of those ebooks. Ultimately, I would read more if Bowman ever decided to take up the series again, as I was sad to say goodbye to the characters.

4 Stars!! This was such a good book and series! I felt a sense of déjà vu while reading this but I’m not sure I’d read a book like this before. It might be from reading the other books in the series. It can be read as a standalone but the series is great and I’d recommend reading it. The main characters, Phillip and Sophie, were likable and eventually got their HEA ending. I do wish there was an epilogue to wrap up the entire series and a bit more romance but this was still a great read. Lots of intrigue, mystery, murder, whodunnit, long lost lovers, kidnapping, hostages, near death experiences, longing, and plenty of action! I was a little disappointed in Phillip for not pursuing Sophie as much as he should’ve and really would’ve liked an epilogue but I really enjoyed this book and the entire series!

I have really loved all Valerie Bowman’s books. I have been reading her books since 2017 and this is my 25th book by her. To me, her books always seem like super quick reads even they are over 200 pages but I’m guessing because they catch your attention right away and just start reading. I read this one in a few hours. I couldn’t put it down.

I really enjoyed this series and especially this book. I loved the story and the characters. Phillip and Sophie were a great read. I loved the intrigue and suspense.

I would definitely recommend this book and all her other books as well.

This verges on a three star read, but I was inclined to skim the entire book because it felt a tad too redundant and predictable.

Lovely end to the series, another enjoyable read. This whole series is really fun and I'm planning to put it in my re-read rotation, might even do a chronological rather than series order read next time.

It's too bad this series ended too, because I had grown attached to the characters despite the time jumps.
From Sophie and Philipp I expected a little more misunderstanding and suffering, but all in all they didn't lack chemistry with each other, and anyway I was glad to see the other "old" characters like Thea and Bell again.

I received from the Author a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

If you like historical romance, READ THIS BOOK!!!!

That kind of couple you fall in love with from the start, but through a series of misunderstandings (in addition to revenge, kidnappings, and other things to get in the way of the couple getting together) causes them to be separated, and worse, leads Phillip to believe that he was betrayed by the person he loved most, while Sophie suffers from the "death" of her lover, and is forced to marry another man.

It's a lot of action, it's a lot of revelation of secrets, it's a lot of amazing things!!
Read it!

Enjoyable finish to the series, though not my favorite of them, probably because Sophie felt less distinct and developed compared with the other FMCs and we only meet her in this one book. But it was still nice to see Phillip return to take his place back in society, dislodging his odious cousin Hugh who had assumed the title.

I guess I was a little unsatisfied that Sophie had let herself get bullied into the engagement with Hugh when she thought Philip was dead. She explains it better later during the kidnapping at least, as her just being in a fog and not caring anymore.

I’m going to call this one 3.5 stars, rounding up.

This series is not trending in the right direction for me. I absolutely cannot stand when characters are made to make nonsensical decisions to further a plot, particularly when it’s the woman’s decision. It smacks of sheer laziness.

**Trigger Warnings Below**

Heroine: Sophia Payton, about 20. Nickname: Sophie.

Hero: Phillip Grayson, about 29. The rightful Duke of Harlowe.

Date: 1814

How they meet: Sophie and Phillip met off-page 3 years prior, just before Philip went off to war. Sophie had been expecting a proposal from Phillip upon his return.

What happens: Phillip was believed to have died about a year prior in the war, but has actually been recovering from physical and emotional injuries at his friend’s estate. During his absence, his older brother has died and a cousin has claimed the title of Duke. Phillip is finally recovered enough to re-enter society and claim the title which rightfully belongs to him.

Sophie’s social-climbing stepmother has convinced her father to arrange a marriage for Sophie to Phillip’s cousin--the man who believes himself to be the Duke of Harlowe. Sophie finds the man to be tactless and rude, and doesn’t wish to have anything to do with him. The day her betrothal is announced happens to be the same day that Phillip shows up at a ball to mark his return to society. She is surprised to see him, and is angry that he is alive but didn’t bother to tell her. The moment they come face-to-face, a loud noise triggers Phillip’s PTSD, making the encounter all the more awkward.

Trigger Warnings:

Verdict: I enjoyed this story, and was happy to get the hero’s story after he was an important secondary character in an earlier book in the series. I did feel like the focus of this story was more on the murder mystery that the hero was unraveling and the machinations of a wicked stepmother more than it was on the romance itself. While mysteries aren’t my thing, I did find that part of the story pretty interesting. I wish there had been more background on the hero and heroine. I really enjoy this author (even her weaker books are really good) and the story completely held my interest. While this book could potentially be read as a standalone, it is much better to have read Save a Horse, Ride a Viscount first as there is background on the hero’s war recovery in it.

Steam-level: steamy and explicit

First – I have loved this series. Ms Bowman’s premise is one which absolutely put new perspective on romance during the Regency period. Upper classes becoming enamored of obvious lower classes – what were they thinking? The reader finds out and it is fun all the way.
That is why I was disappointed in this book. I wanted Sophie and Philip to have fun. What did I know?
Phillip has returned to London society as a new Duke. It was thought he had died in the war. During that time, his beloved older brother the Duke, died of a heart attack. His cousin took over the title and all the properties and money that went with it. Phillip is ready to take over the title, but most of all, he wants to find out who murdered his brother. And, he wants to see, Sophie, the girl he planned to marry.
There is mystery, danger and intrigue. There are villains who are truly villainous. And there are misunderstandings all over the place.
Sophie is a young lady who was devastated when she believed Phillip was dead. She is bullied by a step-mother from hell. She has allowed that to continue even though she was a woman with strength of character when she was younger. She seems to have forgotten who she was the minute Phillip went to the army.
Phillip believes he no longer deserves Sophie’s love because of the mental anguish he has suffered from his war injuries. His attempt to overcome his PTSD has cost him a great deal.
I was hoping for humor between these two. When they were younger, it appears they had fun together. I understand that things have changed. I understand that both these people have suffered terribly. But, I did not get any whisper of their earlier personalities.
I also felt the book contained a lot of description rather than action. Do not tell me, show me, please.
I realize I am the only human being who read the book and was less than enamored. I am sure it is just me, it’s not you.
I will continue to love Ms Bowman’s writing. She is a master.

Phillip Grayson is presumed dead but after being gone from the land of the living has finally returned to London. Phillip is attending a ball with his good friends Viscount Clayton and Theodora. Phillip is not really wanting to go but there is something he must do. Since Phillip has disappeared his cousin has stolen not just his title, Duke of Harlowe, but his supposed betrothed, Miss Sophia “Sophie” Payton. When Phillip is announced as the duke, he throws caution to the wind and sets London abuzz. Sophie upon seeing Phillip is not just hurt is also very upset. Sophie has never forgotten her feelings for Phillip and that she still loves him even though she is betrothed to his cousin. When Sophie discovers someone wants to kill Phillip, she will do whatever she can to let him know even if it puts her very life in danger. Phillip can’t even trust his family and Sophie despite that he might love Sophie too.
What a wonderful suspense mystery filled Regency romance! Ms. Valerie Bowman brings back three of the much-loved characters from the Footmen’s Club Series that not only sparkle with humor, fire and spunk! The sexual tension and smart sassy verbal banter even with both the characters have so much unresolved issues makes for an intriguing read. The fascinating plot twists and heightened danger at every corner. Phillip the PTSD bitter toughened war hero Duke doesn’t treat Sophie right so isn’t an easy guy to like. Sure, it makes sense considering what he has been through even though it is never fully explained still it isn’t hard to imagine. Sophie the sad aggrieved heroine is feisty and strong so is easy to like. So even though Phillip or his friends don’t trust Sophie manages to stand true to herself and what she believes. Yes, it is missing the other characters it still is a fantastic addition to the series and well worth the read!

The best book in the series

A wedding is in her future or is it?
Miss Sophie Payton might be engaged, but she’s not in love. The only man who ever captured her heart was Phillip Grayson—a soldier who was slain a year ago. But when her stepmother decrees that Sophie will marry Phillip’s cousin, the new Duke of Harlowe, Sophie’s in no position to refuse.
A funeral is in his past because he was supposed to have died on the continent.
But the duke is back and he's here to stay.
He thought it was best to stay dead.
I own a copy of this book. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Philip suffers from severe ptsd, and on top of that his brother suddenly dies. Yes something is fishy and he wants the truth. S.o he comes out of hiding, since everyone thought he was dead too. Ok so I get why he had to hide, but all those poor people who thought he was dead!

And there is where the drama lies. Sophie loved him,he went to war, she thought he was dead. Her family pressured her to get engaged. To his cousin, oh the drama.

And she is pissed when he comes back. Like who wouldn't. What where you thinking Philip!?

He wants her, but he has issues. She does still love him, but so much is in the way.

There is a murderer to catch, and danger ahead of them. It was a short book, but it packed romance, danger and more. A nice story. They both deserved some happiness.

This was my second book with this narrator in a row, funny how that happened. It was fun listening to another one by her

These characters had zero chemistry. I know they were supposed to have loved each other once, but I couldn’t tell… we were told about their past, but I wish we could have had a few flashbacks and been shown their past. I think I would have felt more connected to them as a couple. With that being said, I felt more like a mystery than a romance. I didn’t feel their connection at all. Especially because they had to keep their entanglement from the past a secret, so it wasn’t even like other people knew. No one knew about their relationship. If you could even call it that. I think it was far too short for any real angst or love to blossom. I did enjoy seeing the other characters here, but I wish we could have gotten a better love story for Phillip. Or more explanation of his trauma. I don’t know… ANYTHING to feel more connected. The mystery aspect was very predictable too. Saw it from a mile away and nothing seemed to be a surprise.

The Duke is Back by Valerie Bowman is book 6 in The Footmen's Club Series. This is the story of Phillip Grayson and Sophie Payton. This can be a standalone book. Sophie was in love with Phillip but he died or so she thought. Phillip almost died and it took a while to survive his injuries. In their present day we learn that Phillip's brother is dead and that his cousin is taking over the title of Duke of Harlowe along with marrying Sophie. So he assume that Sophie had a part in all that happened. Sophie has no choice on who she is being forced to marry and then she learns Phillip is alive. Of course she is hurt especially by his attitude. This was an exciting read. I love Ms. Bowman's writing so I do recommend this book.

MMC returns to society after recovery from gunshot wounds and muteism after severe wounds in war. (See series bk #4). He's reclaiming his title.

FMC has just had engagement announced to current Duke - 1st cousin
Her stepmother bullied her into it. She didn't care bc she was in love w him and he left for war, she knew he would propose upon return, and he died, devastating her, but then he pops back up like la-te-dah and she's confused and crushed.

TLDR:
Stepmother was turned down by MMCs brother- she crazy, so married FMCs dad, killed the brother, and decided to marry her stepdaughter off to the new Duke while she controlled everything.

Except she was foiled.

This one was def the weakest of the series ... It felt very stale, trite, and predictable.

I assume this is the final book in this series and I am kind of sad. However, I loved this story. It had all my catnips. Murder, intrigue, a character from another series, a villain who we guessed but was still surprised, and a HEA romance. Phillip and Sophie are so great together if only they could express their true feelings. The ending is great and has a fantastic line about seeing how their friends (the first three books, which includes Bell’s story) are getting on. If you are looking for fun regency romps, you can’t go wrong with Valerie.

I received an advanced reader's copy of The Duke is Back by Valerie Bowman.

This has been a wonderful series so far and I'm sad this is the final book.

Phillip's character is intriguing and I was excited to finally read his story. He's gone through traumatic experiences and everyone believe he is dead until he makes an appearance at a ball. He re-enters society and has to deal with what that entails along with trying to figure out who murdered his brother.

The first meeting between Sophie and Phillip was great—the conflict and all the emotions this brought up for both was at the forefront. There were lovely scenes between Sophie and Phillip.

The mystery of who murdered his brother and the reasons behind the murder was interesting and that is tied to the main characters of the story.

This book could be read standalone but I recommend reading the books in order since we get introductions to Phillip and some of the other characters in the earlier books.

war hero ,PTSD, second chance romance, murder mystery

Phillip returned wounded and emotionally scarred. Protected by friends the ton thought he was dead. His older brother was murdered and when he was well enough he started investigating his brother’s death. Was the former love of his life involved in his brothers death. It’s a simple quick story that’s very engaging. The Who done it is fun. Sophia’s relationship with Phillip is sweet as she recognizes the problems he faced in recovery.

Just asking...

I'm a little disappointed. I wanted something more for Phillip's story and I'm sad I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. He deserved better.

Bell annoyed me in this book lol. But he's a loyal friend. I wish we saw more of Clayton though because I love him the most but he was absent. Thea was more involved in the plot than her husband and I didn't like it.

I liked Sophia and Phillip but I didn't necessarily like the story. And I didn't like how Phillip insisted they stayed in the cellar. Wake up, man, no wonder Sophia was hurt!

okay so

i’ve been really into this series lately (i finished all of them bar one in like less than a week) and i loved thea’s book. but thea in this book ??? got on my nerves so MUCH. i suppose that was intentional considering it’s written from sophie’s perspective though.

the whole phillip opening up nd stuff was really sweet- what i wasn’t a fan of, though, was the whole evil step-mom arc. i mean, im against the glorification of murder (but i am for the empowerment of women, so im glad to have a period-time-piece book have a female villain fr).

this was sweet. i love second chance lovers.
