War of the Last Day #0

The Third Crossing

Rate this book
The drums of war are beating in Koya. By the Light’s will, the Red Cloaks shall cross the sea under His holy banner, the ancient homeland will be restored, the slaughtered ancestors will be avenged, and the damned occupants shall all perish.

By the Light’s will, the Third Crossing shall happen.

Akira will be one of the heroes of the upcoming holy war; that’s the seer’s promise to his mother. He will outshine his fellow mages, don the red cloak, and join the Light’s own soldiers. He will bring victory to his people and honor to his family, clearing its name from his father’s shame.

Or that’s what Akira thinks. Because seers can be devious sometimes.

From the rural side of Koya enters Natsu as she assumes her late husband’s place and takes the smuggling underworld by storm. Her shocking rise provokes not only the Koyan navy, but also her rivals, and a fierce war ensues on land and sea. A war she can only win if she shakes hands with the smugglers' deadliest enemies; the Red Cloaks themselves.

For honor and coin, Akira and Natsu will forge a shaky alliance, both knowing that one of them will eventually have to betray the other. Trust could be a grave mistake in these dark times of war. If you wish to be the last one standing, you must be ready to be the first to stab in the back.

My SPFBO9 review of The Third Crossing is published at Before We Go Blog.

“A dangerous game she was playing; she was aware of that, but she didn’t want to risk losing the very asset that put her on top of the underground trading business.”

Fates intertwine in unexpected ways in The Third Crossing by Karim Soliman. The Third Crossing is a prequel novel to Soliman’s epic fantasy series, War of the Last Day, taking place about seventeen years prior to the events of the main series.

The Third Crossing alternates perspectives between two main point-of-view characters. First up is Natsu, a widowed sea smuggler carrying on her late husband’s trafficking of enhanced bowstrings. We meet the second point-of-view character, Akira, on his way to see the Emperor. Akira is shocked when his cousin, Kim, is selected for training with the elite junior Red Cloaks.

There is an obvious East Asian influence throughout the worldbuilding of The Third Crossing, apparent in both the character names and geographical locations. For example, much of the action concerns the island of Hokydo, a thinly veiled version of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The Third Crossing has a vibrant magic system, although I was a bit annoyed by the terminology of channeling “anerjy,” which has just enough letters changed to escape being autocorrected to “energy.”

As you can guess from the name of the series, the main plot concerns an impending War of the Last Day, a holy war that is at the forefront of everyone’s minds in the land of Koya. Unfortunately, The Third Crossing does not offer much context for the holy war beyond simply reclaiming the Koyans’ homeland. The novel would have benefitted from more exposition to motivate this key conflict and provide additional historical context. Despite the action-filled plot, with this underdeveloped exposition I felt detached from the characters and their motivations for most of the book.

While this is a cut for SPFBO9, I believe fans of Karim Soliman’s War of the Last Day series will still find much to love here, with many unexpected twists that will enhance their enjoyment of the series as a whole.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Third Crossing (War of the Last Day #0) by Karim Soliman is a awesome prequel to what has been a great epic fantasy series. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to read this series thanks to the author because it has easily become a top epic fantasy series. This installment is a prequel to both Army of the Cursed and Tattered Banners and it's good to see everything starting to come together for the main series. Karim Soliman's writing style is unique, and it totally works for this series. The action is great, the magic system is cool, and the perspectives are very clearly defined and come together well. Overall, I can't recommend this series enough. If you are a fan of epic fantasy at all this series is a must read. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Thanks again, Mr. Soliman!

A war ,a mystery and a great adventure .
You will be taken to a world you will not be able to escape until you read the last page.
A epic book do not miss this one.

Akira is a red cloak seer destined to serve and win the upcoming war. Natsu took over her husband’s smuggling business when he died and she was asked to aide the top mage by smuggling for him. The real question is, does anybody really know what the war is about ? As you move forward in this story, you will be taken on a grand adventure. The cast of characters is amazing. The action, intrigue and mystery is non stop. Karim has provided us with another blockbuster story to keep us from sleeping !

The Third Crossing is an interesting book full of magic and backstabbing. There are two main characters, each with their own sub plots until they come crashing together in the war that is foretold. Both characters are very interesting, and I really enjoyed the novel. I hope that this series will be continued. I received an advance copy of this novel through StoryOrigin. This is my true and honest review.

5🌟’s!!!!

Stunning and unexpected.

I didn’t know I needed this story…but I NEEDED this story! Having read the first two epics in the War of the Last Day series- ‘Army of the Cursed’ and ‘Tattered Banners’, this story left me extremely satisfied yet wanting more. A missing puzzle piece snapping into place within the complex world of Gorania. A must read along with the others! Written with the detail and depth I’ve come to know from Mr.Soliman, it was a thrilling adventure!

There comes a time when we all must choose.
Loyalty or what we know to be right.

The War of the Last Day is imminent. A shining victory should Koya make the Third Crossing and reclaim their long lost homeland.

But could the bright light of victory just be the world burning?

When the line is drawn, there is no middle ground. No escape. You have to choose.

This was my second read of Karim Soliman's works and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Though I did rate book one (Army of the Cursed) higher with a 5 star, I felt this one brought some similar feelings but I enjoyed book one a bit more over all.

With that being said, I was feeling a bit of deja vu with this one near the beginning with similarities between a character in this prequel as with in book one. We have someone who is struggling to live up to the potential they want to as it relates to this worlds magic but they have a gift in dealing with potions. But that only lasted so long before this character clearly got on their own path very different from that mentioned in book one.

Pacing was on par with the previous book. It kept a good pace. It might have actually been a little easier to follow with only two main PoV's to follow in The Third Crossing. But the over all action and story were done well again!

Character building was very well too. As previously mentioned we only had two main point of views but several excellent supporting characters. Karim hasn't been afraid to let us lose some supporting characters that we readers might have gotten a bit attached too. He isn't afraid to put any of his characters main or supporting through the ringer in his stories which is always nice to see! You really begin to feel for them.

The world building gets a bonus from me simply because it helps build the world in general that I already begin to learn about from book one. That's really what this book was written to do after talking to Karim after reading it. It really does shed some light on why certain people where in Army of the Cursed fighting for sides that might not have made sense. After this book, it makes a lot of sense!

The one thing I think that brought the rating down just slightly is the fact of how abruptly the two main characters' story ended in The Third Crossing. It definitely leaves you wanting more. Especially since we get a bit of a fast forward, I wish we could have added another 100 pages or so and learned a bit more what happened during that time that elapsed. But again after talking with Karim we might not have heard the last of these two which really excites me! I have my hands on book two of the series which I need to work in over the next couple of months if I can, then patiently wait for book three to finish and release!

One huge bonus for me in this story was the inclusion of a main character that wasn't your typical young adventurer. We get that so often with fantasy stories and I get it. We are building the past of that character so that we can learn more about why they are doing what they are about to do. But the fact one of these two was already well into her middle years is always a huge bonus for me. It's just a refreshing change when I get to read about those types of characters.

I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of The Third Crossing by Karim Soliman. I quite enjoyed this story, and the world created by Soliman! It’s a short read but manages to pack in a strong story with surprisingly well developed characters.

What Worked:
- There were two main POV characters - Akira and Natsu. Both were quite well developed, and had distinct voices.
- What felt like two very disparate stories were woven together very smartly and effectively.
- For such a short story there was a strong, detailed, plot that featured twists and turns yet still had a satisfying pay-off. The world was well developed and felt lived-in. The magic system, while not described in a great amount of detail, was well-developed and lived within its own set of rules.
- Soliman definitely deserves praise for his world-building and story-telling.

What Didn’t Work For Me:
- Soliman has a very… odd way of writing. I don’t know if he has a proper editor or not, but his authorial voice is bizarre which, at times, drew me out of the story. I found this voice to be most noticeable in the characters' dialogue and inner monologues. This is the first thing I’ve read by this author so I don’t know how prominent this issue is in his other work, but it was definitely a detractor.
- The male characters definitely felt better developed than the female characters. I found this most noticeable in the characterization of Natsu. While she starts out strong it is slowly revealed that much of her status is due to that which was left behind after the death of her husband. As we get further into the story we discover that many of her actions are driven by the fact that she is a mother, while other male characters seem to have much more agency over their choices despite also having children in the story. I would have liked to see more agency given to the female characters in the story. Again, as this is the only thing I have read by this author, I don’t know if this is an issue in his other work.

Summary:
Overall, this was a great read. I decided to give it 4 stars, despite its issues, to reflect how fun it was to read. It was quick, precise, and sets up the story’s world really well. I will definitely be checking out more of Soliman’s work.

This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBO9 contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

A ship smuggling enchanted bowstrings is about to get boarded by the coastguard in this Japanese/Korean sea adventure.

I love sea adventures, and this looks to be a fantasy with another refreshingly unique, non-western setting. It seemed at first to be a low-magic world, until this enchanted bowstring detail.

Our female captain is also a nice tough. She seems resourceful and bold. Her and her first mate are our only characters in the opening section, and in such a short space I don’t think I know them well enough to comment more.

But this opening leans on action and brief snatches of detail that pull the reader in. The prose and dialogue are competent, tho I will say sometimes early on I was confused just what characters or the narration was talking about.

There’s a tendency I’ve noticed in some of these openings to be overly obscure about certain details that leaves me confused rather than intrigued. In this case, there is something about the ship that has to stay secret? It has to be a myth??

But that thing is also a weapon, maybe? At least, I think they’re talking about the ship. I’m assuming the ship is the Wraith mentioned. Traditionally ship names are italicized, but that isn’t the case here…

But, despite my confusion here, and the fact that I might have enjoyed some basic descriptions so that I can understand what the Wraith & our coastguard’s Turtle Boat looks like (nice to have - not stylistically required), this opening has purpose.

The characters are introduced, they have goals, challenges, conflicts, and the few setting details and place names I get have piqued my interest. I’d like to see where this goes and if my confusion is shortly smoothed out. I‘m in.

Natsu assumes her late husband’s place and takes a coveted place in the smuggling underworld.
Akira is flabbergasted that he was not selected to wear the Red Cloak and that his cousin Kim was. Specially after mastering the various spells. He knows that Kim is the Archmage's daughter and arbors no jealousy towards her as she has proven her abilities in other areas. His poor excuse for a mother, however, does not see it the same way and wants answers as she attributes this situation to Akira's disgraced father.
A seer has predicted, through the emperor, the third crossing where Koyans and Goranians are at war. The army is mobilized with its powerful mages and the Archmage is promoted to head of the Emperor's court.
In the meantime, Natsu, her crew and her son Riku must survive and continue to secure clients.
The Author has succeeded in creating a sequel to the series where Action is the key word from start to finish. The reader is taken along on an adventure split between 4 main characters and their following. Filled with demons, mages, sorcery, supernatural powers, treachery and twists and turns, the book is worth reading even if there are lengths where the reader will probably skip pages as I did. 4 Stars for a good story.

The Third Crossing was unlike anything I had ever read before! It was unique in that it highlighted and focused on a region and culture that I find is often overlooked in the fantasy genre. It was really great to see this culture and the customs their within come to light as they played a huge role in the story, especially regarding family honour and respect for those of higher authority. Jumping through multiple perspectives it was incredibly engaging, I finished it in two days!

The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because there were moments where I felt a bit lost, and were harder to follow.

This is a totally engaging novel, without putting in any spoilers I can safely say that you must make your own mind up as to who are the heroes and villains. It is an easy book to read but the plot is not so clear being multilayered. Loyalties are tested, manipulated, and often confusing, though not to the reader but definitely to the characters. An excellent read with more to come in another episode.

I loved the first book in the series, Army of the Cursed, and this book ranks right up there with it. Completely engaging, it was impossible to put down, so I didn't! Lost some sleep but who needs sleep, right?! I hope you enjoy this book and this series as much as I have.
