Grounded, under suspicion for attempted murder, and betrayed, Key finds himself in over his head…
A meeting with an old associate goes horribly wrong and Key finds himself on the wrong side of justice. On trial, Key learns losing will strip him of his freedom, his life, and leave him confined to a prison cell. He has no idea that winning his and Sera’s freedom… might just cost him the only thing he cares about—his daughter.
Sera, once considered her father’s accomplice, leaves to follow her own dream… only to wind up entangled in a nightmare she might not survive.
With his daughter in trouble, his life upside down, and few friends left to turn to, Key must make a decision. Key will sacrifice anything to save his daughter. Which is good, because the ransom demanded… is Key himself.
Key and Sera are on trial for stealing Wawa's ship & body (you'll understand that once you read it!) and it's not looking good. I really enjoy these characters and their growth arcs are nicely done. This episode is very thrilling and it's a quick read, which is nice.
Our hero is not in a good situation and has no one to turn to for help. Faced with an impossible choice, he makes the only decision he can.
This is book one of the second story arc. Since this is the start of an arc, this is not a bad place to start.
This is a science fiction space opera story with an assassin as our lead. The story is well written but short, written as a serial, so this is just part of a larger story. Our characters and setting are well developed with lots of background details. The plot has a lot of intrigue and action which makes the story go by very fast. Overall, this was a solid start to the second series and I definitely am looking forward to more.
Highly recommended.

When I saw that this is Rokku Part Deux (rhyming intentional), I was kinda confused. Why not just continue the original series. Then I realized it’s Rokku: Second Generation. Hmmmm (tapping temple while nodding). So… is it Rokku I plus Rokku I to equal Rokku II? Or is it Rokku Squared? As in 4 times the angst & snark? Whoo-hoo!
Anyway. If you’re looking for some of the same swashbuckling that kept you coming back for more Rokku…he’s baaaack.
The only difference is the incredible father-daughter bonding: ‘It was an ugly shirt anyway; I only wore it because it mortified Sera.’
