Australian witch, Amelia Spelled, has had her fill of murders, but this one takes the cake. Her boyfriend, Alder, has been battered in the line of duty, so his attempts to help are half-baked. When Amelia takes cupcakes to the local nursing home, she is met with a frosted reception by the subsequent murder victim. A wardrobe malfunction puts the icing on the cake, as Amelia struggles to solve the murder before the new detectives in town turn up the heat. Will Amelia be left with egg on her face or will she rise to the occasion and solve the murder?
USA Today best-selling author Morgana Best survived a childhood of deadly spiders and venomous snakes in the Australian outback. Morgana Best writes cozy mysteries and enjoys thinking of delightful new ways to murder her victims.
By the seventh book in the series, you would expect Amelia to be getting better at baking cupcakes. Somehow I am beginning to think she is hopeless! She does seem to be doing better when her cupcakes rise nicely and don't break anything or bounce when she intentionally drops them, but... I'm sure her boyfriend Adler (who is recovering from being shot in the previous story) thought he was under fire when they started exploding all around him as he reluctantly agreed to try one. What a disaster! But what do you expect when Amelia guessed at the amount of baking soda to be one cup? Adler's reaction to the cupcakes was priceless.
Of course the one thing Amelia is getting better at is investigating and solving murders (thanks to her friends who help her!) When the cupcake shop sponsors a tea for the residents of Happy Valley Gardens, one of the residents falls over dead from eating a chocolate cupcake. Of course Amelia as the owner of the shop is immediately a suspect. In order to prove her innocence by finding the real murderer, Amelia and friends are forced to investigate while the detectives poke around and focus mostly on Amelia.
There are many funny parts thanks to Amelia's friend Camino and her love of onesies, glitches in phone technology, and of course her "living" house who has been binge watching "The Biggest Looser" throughout this book. The author has a way of connecting Amelia's odd collection of friends and tidbits in her life that will have you chuckling and smiling as you read. But importantly, the characters work well together and interact naturally no matter what happens next. I love the way that although they are witches, they don't solve every problem with magic, so when they do use a spell (like hot foot oil) it is a bit of a surprise.
You won't want to miss this entertaining episode in the series! A mystery with plenty of twists right up to the end that will captivate you and make you want to read more.
I love this series and this book was no exception. When Amelia and Thyme take cupcakes to a local nursing home and the evil old lady there drops dead Amelia is top suspect so the gang does their own investigations. I really love Amelia as a main character she just makes me smile. I also really enjoy the "gang". Camino with her onesies, Ruprecht the father figure in the group, and Thyme who is just sweet and encouraging. I still haven't really warmed up to Alder. He doesn't seem to have a personality or it hasn't been developed enough. I just don't have a feel for him at all. The story line was really well written with a few twists and turns. I love hearing about Amelia's disasters in the kitchen and all the little side stories like Thyme and the Sergeant. A really quick good read in a fantastic series.
Amelia agrees to donate cupcakes to the senior home for a morning tea. Upon arrival, they meet one of the most unpleasant ladies to ever have lived. She's rude and obnoxious, and has no filter on her mouth. When during the refreshment brake, Celia suddenly keels over dead. When the medic determines that she was poisoned. The two detective go for the easy solution so they can return to the city. Poisoned cupcake means the pastry store owner killed one of the residences.
Another fun story with lots of humor, and well developed characters.
Amelia is catering a tea at a nursing home when one of the residents, a very disagreeable woman, drops dead. Before that happened, Amelia noticed as white powdery substance on a cupcake the woman was eating before she died, making Amelia a suspect. Interesting twists and turns as the story progresses with a surprising conclusion. And Amelia has a new romance as well. It's a nice and quick read.
Amelia brengt cupcakes naar een bejaardentehuis en ontmoet een oude vrouw die iedereen het leven zuur maakt en veel geheimen kent. Even later is de vrouw dood...
It's not Amelia's fault that the nasty woman at the care home died eating one of the shop's cupcakes, and it's not Amelia's fault that her witch abilities are anything but compatible with anything to do with cooking or baking. But she has a loyal bunch of friends who also are witches and they do their best to help solve the case. Lots of laughs and guffaws included.
Lets see. One cup of baking soda. NO! I don't think this lady has 2 brain cells to rub together. Baking powder yes 1 1/2 teaspoons maybe but not 1 cup of baking soda. That combined with self rising flour I could see the little cakes exploding. So I take back my previous review about her being cursed to just being stupid.
The Kitchen Witch is back in another mystery. Enjoyable but unfortunately rather predictable as to who the murderer was. Shame as all the others were all different. Perhaps the series should now end.
Amelia goes to the seniors home to donate cupcakes for morning tea. The nastiest ole biddy makes fun of Amelia and Thyme, then she drops dead. Read and enjoy!
These books are wonderful. Morgana best keeps me intrigued and giggling. The characters are so fun. Camino and her onesies are in full swing in this one.
Completely surprised by the ending. I had three ideas in mind about the murderer: Edith and Jane for most of the story, but then Grant later on. In fact, I was hoping for Grant. Grant made sense. Then I was pretty convinced, along with Amelia, by the end that it was Edith. So just like Amelia, though a little before, I was like... “Whaaaat!” And then the second half of the murder surprise... “I so wondered that! But... no. Not possible.” But it was and I couldn’t believe it!
... And then that onesie incident! The undies! LOL!!!! It took me forever to stop laughing! Can’t forget the beginning... Laughing from the start this time!
I am, however, getting tired with how often the revelation always happens in the house, and how the house does something that forces absurd explanations. So far, only ExSpelled happened away from home.
This is a great book; this is the seventh book in the Kitchen Witch series written by Morgana Best. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Another great addition to the Kitchen Witch series. Sure there is another murder to solve and cupcakes to eat (or explode), but this series is about friendships. I enjoy how the friends come together and support each other. They have become a murder solving team. Amelia needs the police on speed dial though. Looking forward to book 8.
