People go to Alaska to escape something. Rob Stone is escaping his past and the FBI. Until he can clear his name he will use the two things Alaska has to hide - the wilderness and an understanding that everyone has their own reasons for being there. A chance meeting with a woman, a shared smile and Stone is ready to move on. But when someone tries to run Stone out of town things take an unexpected turn.

A.P. Bateman’s forth novel in the Rob Stone series ties together his previous novels and sets up a fifth Rob Stone novel in Virginia. I found the fourth novel very interesting, with the lead character drawing from both his previous military experience and his secret service experience. I like the character and look forward to reading the next novel in this series. Hopefully, Rob will eliminate the “bad guy or guys” in the CIA and get the opportunity to return to being not being a fugitive.
At last, another in the Rob Stone series. It’s been long-awaited and doesn’t disappoint.
Stone travels to Alaska to disappear. Although he has supplied evidence that he was not involved in any crime, it’s clear that it’s much more convenient for those seeking him to make him a scapegoat despite his innocence.
However, Stone being Stone, he cannot help but get involved when seeing evidence of bullying on reaching a small gold prospecting town. Especially when the victim is an attractive woman who owns a parcel of land mined by her grandfather and father; both having died under mysterious circumstances.
A P Bateman has a talent for keeping his plots fresh and this is no exception. The major character(s) may remain the same, but the storyline is never stale or a rehashed version of earlier novels. It’s a difficult trick to pull off but there’s no sign of that happening to this author.
As usual, the plots and subplots keep the reader’s interest and the descriptions, whether relating to the cold landscape or individuals, are sharp and believable. Whilst it’s possible to read this novel as a stand-alone, new readers of Bateman would do well to start with the first three in the series. With writing of this quality, it’s a pleasure and not a chore.

Elite Reviewing group received a copy of the book to review.
A reasonably fast paced thriller that has Stone arriving in Alaska and unfortunately through letting his guard down by stopping his truck to help broken down motorists he is hoodwinked and his vehicle stolen leaving him on foot. Arrival on foot at the nearest town finds his stolen truck and eventual recovery of keys and the meeting of a female lawyer working her father’s gold mine while under pressure to relinquish her rights by another miner. Stone takes her under his wing and helps to keep her alive while aware that a hit squad are also on their way to kill him as well as the gold miner, his hired assassins and employees.
Although this book is filled with over-the-top violence, it is a pretty compelling book. I am fond of stories based in Alaska, and having a bit of romance makes it even more interesting. Rob Stone is an Afghanistan Vet, trained in combat, very fit, and trying to lose himself in the wilds and lonely parts of Alaska, hiding from those connected with the Secret Service who framed him for something he didn't do. He finds himself between an attractive woman owner of a gold mine and tough guy competitor that wants to take it away from her. A page turner, to be sure!
Who was that masked man?! Dunno, but he saved the damsel from the villain who demanded her deed or face death. I read this on Kindle but it is pure pulp fiction, a throwback to an earlier generation of over the top adventure usually under a lurid cover in my neighborhood drugstore magazine rack. Yeah, I’m that old but still eager for a thrilling read. I have found it.
Rob Stone is a great character (hero), who takes time from his own problems to help someone in need. Juggling the 2 issues causes trouble but it all turns out at the end. Set in Alaska mining country, it’s rough & tumble, as well as illegal & immoral. Great ending. The series is great but you could read this as a single.
This kept my interest from start to finish. I wasn't sure about the addition of Max Power, but it worked well. Wish I knew what happened to him. Will !look forward to reading about Rob Stone again.
Action from the start. Well told, and good character development. I like a hero to root for, and lots of action. This gave me more than I expected. I can hardly wait to read the next one.
Reads more like an early Reacher, which is a good thing since Lee Childs latest works have lost their edge. Alex King is still my favorite but Stone is going on me.
Rob Stone now on the run but still managing to get into scrapes with the past never far behind, be interesting in how he eventually clears his name. Highly recommended read
I haven't read a Stone adventure in a while and I'm glad I picked back up where I left off. A good story if a little predictable but that's what we love about this kind of gritty story isn't it.
This book was a great addition to the series. The characters were well-detailed and understandable. The way the author wove in linkages to the previous stories was excellent. It was an entertaining read.
A man struggles to move on after too many tragedies in his life. He's a former everything, grunt,Seal, CiA, even Secret Service? He holds toooo many secrets to be allowed to "disappear."
This book is full of twists, Exciting and dangerous. The land of ALASKA a nd the gold mining are subjects which hold history and stories that are very interesting.
This was a good read in which Rob Stone goes to Alaska to get away from pursuers of the Secret Service. Katy McBride, owner of a gold mine but on the edge of bankruptcy, plays a key role.
