A former US government agent goes rogue in this nonstop thrill ride from an author who “is fearless in his storytelling” (Scott Sigler, #1 New York Times–bestselling author). They should’ve let him go. They should’ve let him retire in peace. They should’ve left his woman out of it.Kharzai Ghiassi has served the US Government his entire adult life. The best infiltration agent they’ve ever had. Death is not just his business, death is his life. He’s gone off the CIA’s radar and all they know is that someone is in danger. When a former soccer star turned Islamic terrorist shows up in Anchorage, Alaska, retired Marine Corps Special Operator Marcus ‘Mojo’ Johnson and his State Trooper wife, Lonnie, team up with the FBI’s Mike and Hilde Farris to put a stop to the threat that hangs over the city like a hammer about to fall. No one is safe. No one can hide in the Land of the Midnight Sun.Praise for Basil Sands and his thrillers“One awesome writer, penning stories pumped with enough adrenaline that you’ll suffer from insomnia until you read the last word. The thing about reading this author's books out of publication order is that I discovered more interesting things about each of the recurring characters. That's a good thing. Like all of Basil Sands' books, this one is an action thriller, fast paced and full of law enforcement and inactive Marines. Kharzai is the known CIA amongst the recurring characters and this book lets us know more about the
anger that is always present beneath his facade. I know that I want to reread them in publication order after I pry them loose from a certain inactive Marine who liberated them from me.
The audios are narrated by the author and while that is almost always a good thing, in this case it is even better because he is a professional narrator!

Mojo, Pastor Mike, Lonnie, and the incomparable Kharzai. All Great characters that appear in Basil Sands novels but this time they might not be on the same side. Kharzai has been through a lot, and the actions of America in conflicts overseas has left him angry.
As the president is coming to Anchorage to meet with heads of other governments, and the FBI has identified some “most wanted terrorists” in the area, the team is trying to put together the pieces to stop anything from happening to the president and a lot of innocent people. Kharzai is a wild card, no one can catch him, and no one knows which side he is on.
I listened to the podcast of Basil’s books 10+ years ago and they stick with you. It was great connecting with these characters again.

Unfortunately, this book just didn't quite work for me. I was really excited to find it featured both Marcus and Pastor Mike, and was set in Anchorage - seemed like an awesome combo! Turns out, it was Anchorage in the summer, so they just kept talking about how hot it was - not quite the escape I was looking for (given the heat indexes here in Houston in the 110's+ in July). Then, it just felt like the author was trying to cram in scenes with everyone, even if they didn't quite make sense or weren't necessary to the story. This was particularly the case with the two wives who just felt shoe-horned into the story. There were also some weird, out of place, urban gangster style scenes which just felt ridiculous. And then there was the overall story plot - I just didn't find it believable, and the resolution was incredibly anti-climatic. A real shame because the overall concept of this novel was exciting, it just didn't work for me in execution.

Great non-stop action.

First sentences, "Chapter 1 Southwestern Punjab, Pakistan November 4th “Ali aga, how long will the meeting be today?” Kharzai fidgeted as he spoke, looking out the window at the dusty landscape that passed them by. Ali turned in the front passenger seat and glared at Kharzai over the top edge of his mirrored sunglasses. “Al Gul, your wedding plans will be as scheduled.” Ali used the cover name Kharzai was known by among the Taliban and allied organizations. “The old man made that very clear.” “How did you know that’s what I was thinking?” “Because that girl is the only thing you have been talking about for a week.” “I’ve talked about more than Leila this week.” “No.” Ali shook his head. “No, you have not.” "

A quick read and a good story. The author seemed to have little idea how football players are recruited in the UK but apart from that an enjoyable book
