She's worked hard to leave the abusive magic-filled compound she’d grown up in. Her life was normal now: a public service job, a town house, a book club. Normal.
Until Larch shows up. A cousin, expelled from the same compound she fled, all those years ago. And now Jasmina’s his only contact in the outside world.
With Larch, Jasmina finds herself hurtling back into the world of witchcraft, getting to know a whole new group of people. Is it possible for magic to go with kindness, goodwill, even love?
I liked this - a low-effort read - although the plotting could've been tighter and there were points where the character monologues got very repetitive. I wish more had been done with Craig.
Another book, another point of view. This time a bit more distant in Jasmina (and Larch), witches who’ve managed to escape a cult-like witchy family (one a long time ago and the other just now, being the main point of the story).
It’s nice to see a bit more of the world that Buchanan is building and the idea of Divination applying to technology / computer searches is pretty fun. But like all of the books here, it’s far too short to actually get into anything. I want to see more of the family they escaped from. I want to see more of the fae (introduced and problem solved in literally a paragraph this time).
Perhaps such a short form is not for me after all. 😄
Still a decent book and it was interesting to see it tie into the Laurel’s world–and how different the two are–eventually. Onward to the lastward.
This was another great addition to the Windflower series, which is just such a cozy, sweet series filled with magic, mystery, and romance! I loved that this book focused on an older protagonist who is dealing with her past trauma in order to move on and help the next generation, as well as finding new community for herself. There were a few small typos in the book, but other than that, it was just such a pleasure to read! Very definitely recommend this book and the whole series if you're looking for something to curl up with and relax into.
A great story of how a witch escapes a cult, while another who helps her relearns her prowess and natural talent that she had long forgotten. The writing is engaging and vividly descriptive, as this one senses a feeling of truth amongst the trauma and tribulations the characters go through. It feels almost raw as you read through this fantastical source of fiction. It is lovely crafted by the expert hands of this author giving you a sense of reading a much bigger story than it actually is. The end is satisfying, yet you finish with a ton of emotion. Certainly worth reading.
Loved the story about an older protagonist who rediscovers her magical talent after a nephew she didn't even know she had needs her help. Just wish it had been proof-read more thoroughly.
3.5 stars. These novellas are super sweet and comforting. I really love them. The writing could do with a professional edit and I would love to see more in depth exploration of these characters, their lives and this world.
