The Future Never Sleeps

In the glacial nation of Norgard, Jolan the Dream Teller serves every seeker, whether peasant or high lord. Though she loves using her gift, she struggles to navigate the corrupt and dangerous court and the jealousies of the Guildagard.

When an old man’s nightmare imparts a dire warning, Jolan realizes her entire nation is in danger. But before she can sound the alarm, she is betrayed by the guilds and sold into slavery in a rival kingdom far to the south. As a slave in a foreign land, at first Jolan can’t see beyond her singular focus: return home to warn Norgard of the coming calamity. After facing new dangers, making new friends, and forgiving old wrongs, she must fulfill the purposes the Provider has set before her.

Only then can she face a decision that could cost her the man she loves, her calling, and her freedom—all to save a people who abandoned her.

Story Enjoyment Rating: 9/10 Christian Faith Rating: 3/3

Dream of Kings by Sharon Hinck is a Christian fantasy novel. It follows Jolan, who is a dream teller. She interprets a dream that brings a warning to her kingdom, but on her way to the king, she is kidnapped and sold into slavery in a foreign land.
The story is a retelling of Joseph in Genesis, and it stuck very closely to the plot. I loved seeing how the author would find a way to weave the original biblical story into her own narrative.
Jolan had to deal with the difficulties and complexities of her various situations. She experienced romance, treachery, and the intrigues of court life. She also dealt with the inner turmoil of wanting to return home and her anger about the cruelty she faced.
I loved her journey as a character, both emotionally and spiritually. The romance was swoon-worthy, and the main characters were interesting and complex.
It gave me good insight into what Joseph would have experienced and felt. But at the same time, the setting allowed me to make a clear distinction in my mind: between this work of fiction and the Bible account.
The faith content was strong. It played a prominent role in the story and the characters' motivations.
I want to read more by this author in the future, and I hope she writes more retellings of this kind.

12/27/22 Reread Dream of Kings for an online book discussion. I enjoyed this one even more the second time through. Listened to the audiobook for about half and enjoyed the narrator’s voice; it’s a good fit for this story. My updated rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)

Dream of Kings is yet another well-written fantasy story from Sharon Hinck! There is so much about this stand-alone story that I love: a variety of interesting characters, the unique world they live in, and there are soooo many good lines (many are beginning-of-chapter “quotes” from “books” of this fictional world) that I highlighted as I read.

The main character Jolan the Dream Teller wasn’t as relatable a character for me, but even so, there were definite themes in her life that I could relate to. And I found many of the side characters to be just as unique and interesting as Jolan (maybe even moreso).

I really liked the world-building concept surrounding dreams. In this world, dreams aren’t remembered, but Dream Tellers have been gifted with the ability to see dreams as visions and interpret them. Usually, this is done for someone who is seeking to remember their dream. Knowing this story idea was sparked by the biblical account of Joseph and how God showed him Pharaoh’s dream and what it meant makes the story even better in my opinion.

I noticed a few themes within this story: faith, forgiveness, learning to trust God (who is known as The Provider or Creator) in all circumstances, and understanding that trials are sometimes allowed as a means of good coming from it.

Another thing I loved about this book is how much wisdom is within this story. This quote is just one example of wisdom shared:
“It takes just as much courage to be still and listen as it does to take action and speak.”

Here’s another quote I love:
“Isn’t that what faith is? Trusting when you don’t yet see?”

And one more quote that was meaningful to me:
“Striving leads to weary self-dependence. Let your work flow from the Provider’s inspiration and strength…”

There is a little romance and some violence in the story, but I believe there’s nothing inappropriate. Therefore, I would recommend this book to teen or adult readers who enjoy fantasy stories with unique world-building, a variety of interesting characters, and is told from one character’s point of view.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5 stars)

I received an ebook ARC of Dream of Kings from the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my honest thoughts about this book.

A beautiful and powerful story with some allusions to Genesis and the story of Joseph. This is NOT a story or retelling of Joseph but the elements of faith and purpose and pain are very present. Highly recommend—more in-depth thoughts will be shared on my blog on 1/14/2024. theunicornwriter.com

Wow, I enjoyed this a lot! I was a little nervous going in because I knew this book was inspired by the story of Joseph and I was afraid it would be too predictable because of that. But that wasn't the case at all. While there are certain story beats that are very similar to Joseph's, this is truly only inspired by his story. Sharon Hinck has created an immersive world that makes everything feel fresh and new and adds details unique to Jolan's story that keep it from becoming an outright retelling.

Jolan was likable as a character from the start. She's on the younger side of adult, but has more life experience and maturity than many her age since she's already been married and widowed. I like a wide variety of heroine personality types because that's more realistic than them all being the same, but the spunky, hot-headed, warrior, "strong female heroine" is frequently overdone. It was refreshing to me that, while Jolan is certainly strong in spirit to have survived everything she did, she was a bit more of a gentle soul, not unlike Joseph from the Bible. She doesn't weild a weapon during this story and doesn't need to, because her God-given brains and diplomatic nature are her strengths. She's not a pushover either and will stand up for what's right, even against a king. I truly enjoyed seeing through her eyes and following her as she learned God's purpose for her life and for everything that happened to her.

Another element I really liked was the romance. It comes late in the story, but it's a lovely, sweet, slow burn where you see genuine friendship, respect, and affection develop between the couple long before it gets expressed physically. In fact, they don't even kiss until after they're married! Gasp! Exclamation point!😉😛

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read that I'm glad to have given a chance. Sharon Hinck is quickly becoming an author I consistently like and am coming to trust.

Content Advisory:
Sexual:
Occasional mentions that Jolan finds a man handsome, occasional fluttery romantic feelings, and occasional noticing of his muscular arms. These moments are brief and never overly focused on.
There is a romance during the story which results in a marriage, after which we have the couple interacting as husband and wife for the remainder of the story. Everything is kept clean, sweet, and without sexual details, though the couple's affection for each other is clear.

The only kissing is between a married couple and the descriptions are limited to a line or two at the absolute most.

When someone gets sent to prison, there's mention of the other prisoners making rude comments, but the comments are not written out.

The king of one country has multiple wives and briefly offers for Jolan to become one of them, but she refuses.

Violence:

Someone gets kidnapped via getting strangled unto unconsciousness and tied up before being sold into slavery. As a slave they sometimes slapped or shoved.

In an act of execution, some prisoners in a jail are killed by soldiers. Jolan only hears the deaths in other parts of the prison vs actually seeing them happen. (Mention of moans. No gross description.) Someone gets stabbed and dies in her arms. There is a brief mention of blood.

There is an attempted poisoning, threats, and accusations of poisoning.

Spiritual:
This is Christian fiction heavily inspired by the biblical story of Joseph, so there are many references to God (called The Provider in this story), faith, prayer, etc.

Jolan's job is dream teller. She and people like her have a gift from God (The Provider) where they can see people's dreams, even if the person doesn't remember the dream themselves, and interpret them with God's help.

Magic:
None. Some people would consider this story a "kingdom fantasy" because it's set in a world that is different from our own, but there is no magic. There is a brief mention of an ice dragon in someone's dream, but this turns out to be representative of a storm, not a real fantasy creature. There are multiple races of people in the story that are not human, but the differences between them and humans are physical. For example, one race has different splotches of color on their skin. One race is very small. One has eyes that change colors with their emotions. Etc.

Other:
Adults drink alcohol sometimes, in private and socially.

What a fantastic story!! Sharon Hinck does such a fantastic job in this genre.

So, I'll admit that it took a little time to realize that Jolan's life has parallel lines to Joseph's in the Bible. It's subtle initially. You probably won't realize it at first, but there was a spot where a light bulb switched on and it all became clear. When that happened I looked forward with eagerness to see how the rest of the story was similar.

Jolan is traded to a far away country and watching her struggle to accept her new reality is hard, but seeing glimpses of the Lord (Provider) gives many moments of hope. There are so many ways Jolan is relatable. We all struggle with trust and faith in our walks with God. He has also gifted us in different ways like Jolan. She's able to interpret dreams.

As she's trying to figure out a way to get home, as with Joseph, she's called upon to interpret dreams. I'm telling you, it makes me giddy thinking about Jolan's story in light of Joseph's.

I also loved this world that the author has created. From the colorful ribbons in the sky, to the different nationalities, and to the various lands, it all comes alive through the author's writing. We see how idols are worshipped and how hard it can be for Truth to break through to stubborn hearts.

And can I just say how refreshing it is for a ruler's wife to show kindness? So often, these women are portrayed as evil and ruthless, and while I'm sure Lily is a master manipulator (I mean, wait until you read her storyline) this character wasn't that way! I also loved the dynamic between Jolan and Siverlon. She's her sometimes awkward self and he's, well, the king. I can't forget Kamor! He's a man's man, a warrior, and the king's right hand man. I thoroughly enjoyed his character.

I know it's a standalone, but I'm wishing it was a series! I'm not ready to leave this fantasy world because it was so enjoyable.

*I received the ebook ARC for review. This is my personal opinion.

The Dream of Kings is inspired by Joseph’s story in the Bible. I really enjoyed this Christian fiction fantasy story!

One thing that hit me as I listened to this book was that Jolan did nothing wrong to get her into the bad situations she found herself in and did nothing in her own power to get to a place of success—often she fought it. But through it all, the Provider was in control and worked it all out.

How often do I get frustrated at the bad things in my life and yet resist and fight God’s leading because of fear? Like Jolan learned to follow God in faith and trust, I long to simply follow him in humble faith in my life as well.

I really enjoy Sharon Hinck’s stories. They hold amazing worlds and deep faith themes.

Favorite quote:

“Those who grab the nourishing bread of the wrong dream may find it crumbling into dust. Follow the Provider not your dreams. He alone will fill the emptiness.”

Such a gorgeous cover which houses a unique story. Think a gender swapped Joseph retelling in a fantasy setting. It’s only the broad contours of the Joseph story and very creatively reimagined. The first person narration makes it easy to read.

One of the really nice things about this is that main protagonist Jolan is not twelve years old but a young widow. Her life experience makes her ability to navigate the complexities of her life much more believable.

There is still an element of romance in this and the fantastical and faith elements are woven together in a way that feels really respectful.

First off, I’d like to say I loved that the author did a retelling of the story of Joseph—I’d definitely like to see more fantasy authors dive into biblical retellings! I also deeply appreciated the strong faith several of the characters exhibited. I don’t often see that in fantasy, and it was quite refreshing.

However, the story was very predictable. Most retellings I’ve read have a bit of a twist about them, but this story was basically story of Joseph with some fantasy elements slapped on. I also had trouble connecting to the protagonist, and she seemed to lack a vibrant personality.

Overall, I still enjoyed the story, but would have liked to have seen a more unique spin on the biblical tale.

I was drawn to this book because of the gorgeous cover, but the powerful words kept me hooked throughout the book.

This story weaves themes of redemption, forgiveness, and trusting our Savior in every page. I love how God is referred to as Provider and Creator in this fantasy story.

I would say this is a non-magical fantasy. There are those who have special "gifts", but it's an ability more than magic.

I honestly loved this book and highlighted so many words of Truth in it. There were a lot of twists and turns, most that surprised me! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author!

I loved, loved, loved this book. I'm a huge fan of stories inspired by biblical stories, especially fantasy. I love being invited to think about the deeper meanings and themes. This story focused on trust and moving from simple obedience to love. Something I have recently been struggling to do. I loved the characters so much, and the fantasy elements were so fascinating. It was an exciting read (I was always upset to have to pause to do other things lol) with the perfect balance of questions keeping me hanging and needing to know how both small and big issues would be solved. Despite being inspired by a biblical story, and following all the key points, I was always surprised about how that point came about, it was difficult to guess how the story point would be represented, but when it happened it always made so much sense. So that was also especially great about the story. Overall just loved reading dream of kings!

No content warnings! Clean. There was some kissing and a brief mention of a man being shirtless, all only between a husband and wife but never described beyond a mention in a sentence. (Also a brief mention of a female character having to undress in public, not described at all, is a slave and had no choice but to do so or be beaten.)

(I received a free EARC copy of this book, I was not required to give a good review. I HAVE SINCE PURCHASED THIS BOOK BECAUSE I LOVE IT SO MUCH!)

Jolan is a dream teller, gifted by the Provider to help others navigate the meaning of their dreams. When she's betrayed and cast out of her country to a far kingdom, she wonders if the Provider has forgotten her. How can she help others in a land where they don't even know Him?

This Biblical retelling takes us into the realm of fantasy. Though I don't read much fantasy, I always pay attention to Sharon Hinck's books, as they tend to touch my heart. This one did as well, reminding me in my own life of how much God loves me and how He has His plans for me even when I can't see them.

If you like fantasy or Biblical retellings, I would recommend Dream of Kings. Although I didn't connect personally with the main character, I did connect with the message of the story. This is suitable for all ages and sure to bless many readers.

I received my copy of the book from the author. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I’ve been itching to get my hands on this book ever since I heard Sharon Hinck had written a new standalone fantasy. And oh my, it did not disappoint! Rarely have I encountered a Christian allegory with such rich theological depth, exquisite worldbuilding, and inspiring (yet also flawed) characters. A stirring testament to the power of forgiveness and the way that God uses all things for our good and His glory, Dream of Kings is a captivating fantasy adventure not to be missed!

A sweeping fantasy re-telling of Joseph, and God's presence in our sufferings.

Jolan is a dreamteller in the courts of Norgard, highly favored by the king, when she is stolen from her home, sold into slavery in a foreign land, and betrayed by those she loved. Can she still believe in a good Provider through one trial after another?

An engaging and suspenseful adventure, my heart went out to Jolan from the beginning, and I loved the rawness in how her story was told. The story doesn't shy away from questioning the hard times, and even though the storyline is familiar it still kept me guessing how it would all unfold.

This is the first book I've read by Sharon Hinck, but I will definitely be checking out her backlist after this one. The characters came to life on the page, with honest feelings, emotions, and growth. I also loved the strong spiritual elements of the story, filled with faith truths.

Overall, an excellent standalone novel, riveting and adventure filled. Highly recommend for fans of fantasy, faith, and superb storytelling!

This stand-alone fantasy novel is every bit as good or better than Sharon Hinck's other award-winning books. This one is inspired by the ancient story of Joseph.

The fantasy world is vibrant, and the characters are even richer than their setting. There were many things to love in this story as Jolan figures out who to trust and what trust really means in difficult times. My favorite part was discovering the deeper, hidden aspects of the characters as their story unfolds.

Really sweet book!
Dream of Kings parallels the plot of biblical Joseph's story, but in a way you can't predict completely on your own.
I'm not a huge fantasy person, except for the obvious classic, Narnia, but this book swept me away!

What I loved:

The world-building, the many interesting and detailed characters, only a little bit of romance, the clear biblical messages that are extremely practical and real, the cultures explored and so much more!

What I didn't love:

This is the only book that visits these fantastical places! 😭

I'm definitely going to be rereading this at some point and likely picking up more books by the award-winning Sharon Hinck! What an amazing lady with rich story-telling ability!

Few books have me wishing they wouldn’t end, but “Dream of Kings” was one of them. Lush and rich landscape coupled with an undercurrent of spiritual messages, this story fed my soul as do all of Sharon Hinck’s marvelous works.

Through her characters in "Dream of Kings," I felt she was opening a piece of my heart and revealing my walk with the Creator, acknowledging those points of struggle and failings I didn’t even recognize until she gently pointed them out.

Betrayal and love. Devastation and triumph. Forgiveness and healing. We get it all with this story. Thank you, Sharon Hinck, for writing it!

I didn’t read the description for this book so it wasn’t until about 30% in that I was like- wait a minute. I’ve heard this story- it’s Joseph! 😂 I have never read a Joseph retelling and it was very interesting. I loved being able to pick out all the similarities between the two stories but at the same time seeing how different they were. The dreams were super creative and Jolan’s journey of faith was very realistic in its ups and downs. This is definitely one that I think everyone, but especially believers, will find worth their time!

Enjoyable book. Based very closely on the story of Joseph. The main character is betrayed and sold into slavery and taken far away, gets sent to prison, uses her dream-telling abilities to rise to prominent positions, predicts a period of abundance preceding famine/disaster etc. If you know the story from the bible you won't often be surprised by major plot points and if you need to feel a fair bit of tension from your stories this may not cut it. For the most part threats of danger felt toothless. There are also only light fantasy elements at play gnome-like people, dream/future-seeing powers, a fantasy creature, or 2.

The main character, Jolan, is the story's most compelling aspect. She struggles with her faith in her suffering and that struggle isn't easily resolved. She feels guilt for doubting God (or "The Provider") but still feels justified for it to an extent. She goes from fearing any higher political responsibility and leadership to becoming fully confident in maneuvering in the royal court and speaking up when she has to. She's torn between her persistent longing to return home and her relationships with the people in her new environment. More than anything though, she's compassionate. She deeply cares about helping people and I'm glad the story respects the strength in that.

Since this is a story based on the Bible you may feel a hint of preachiness in it. It may feel off if you are not religious yourself but honestly, there is something nice about seeing a character with a strong faith whose development isn’t in the direction of "realizing" that they were naive for believing

There is romance which I can be picky on but this one didn't bother me. There is some sappiness in there but it's not overbearing and there is a nice gradual building of the relationship that started from a point of distrust. They have a mutual bond over both their faith and their homesickness and we get our sweer happy ending where they get to be together with the slight bitterness that

So that's Dream of Kings. The story of Joseph repackaged into a fun straightforward light fantasy read.

Dream of Kings is a retelling of Joseph in a fantasy setting. Jolan, a woman who can read and interpret people's dreams, finds herself kidnapped and sent to another land, Sabor, where she must maneuver slavery and later court intrigue as she rises to power. In order to protect both Sabor and her homeland of Nordgard, she must learn to forgive and seek relationship with the Provider.

The message in the story was honestly one of the strongest Christian themes I've read in contemporary literature in a while. Hinck beautifully shows the power of relationship with God and the need to use our spiritual gifts wisely through this story. I found it very powerful and it encouraged me greatly. This book is what Christian art should be: beautiful storytelling with compelling themes from the Word of God.

The characters were also excellently written. Three-dimensional and likable, Jolan stands out from usual fantasy or romance heroines with her maturity and widowhood. She seemed like a real person with real struggles, and I could completely relate to her. She is one of the few heroines I could actually point to and say "this woman could be a role model for younger women to follow." Her struggle through growing closer to the Provider was woven excellently through the story and touched me in a way few character arcs have been able to do these days.

Kamor is also an admirable character—an excellent hero who has his own flaws, which is rare for a love interest. He contrasts with Cimeran for his honesty and devotion to virtue. As for the King of Sabor, Hinck excellently portrayed his complexity as a ruler and greyer character.

My only complaint would be that the desire for revenge could have been incorporated earlier to make the message against it all the stronger. It seemed to rather come in within the last few chapters. By perhaps making it more of a defining aspect of Jolan's life, it would have been all the more powerful when Jolan rejected vengeance for forgiveness. But the symbolism of the bitter cup was quite well-done.

Overall, I read this book at a moment when I most needed it. For a fantasy novel, it shows theological depth in a way that touched my soul. I look forward to reading more of Hinck's novels!

With gifted authors like Sharon I am becoming a fan of fantasy. I like the way she brings new worlds to life and surrounds us with vivid images. I immediately liked our main character Jolan. Having a gift of telling others what they dreamed and the meaning behind it, she is sought by powerful people. She uses her gift to warn and also give hope but someone wants to use her for their own selfish gain. Will she survive being kidnapped?

Jolan is in a dire predicament when she is unable to completely tell what she sees and this puts her in danger. Something is holding her back from seeing everything but what is it? Being accused of pitting the Duchess against her husband stirs up a threat to Jolan. The author definitely had my attention as the drama takes shape in the form of revenge. The action really starts when Jolan finds herself befriending the king. As news of a plot to poison the King is averted Jolan knows that more chaos will happen. Someone wants the king out of power and Jolan is in the middle trying to interpret dreams to keep the King and herself from harm. If only she could find a way back to her home, she would finally be safe.

Throughout the story we see mention of the Provider. I liked how it reminds me of God and how He wants to protect His people like Provider does. We see Jolan many times asking for help from the Provider. We do the same when we pray and ask guidance from God. I couldn’t wait to see if Jolan would be able to help her people and keep the King from harm. Danger follows around every corner and it is hard to figure out who to trust at times.

The adventure in the story takes us to a place where deceit is close and Jolan risks everything to expose who is responsible for trying to start a war and take over. I can’t overlook the fact that trusting was a big part of this story. We all find ourselves at times trying to trust someone. Jolan relied on the Provider to direct her path and show her who to trust. I liked how the story directs us to be faithful and let God show us the direction to follow in our lives.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
