Prayers that Work, Ten Minutes to Freedom has been written to address the reality of the spiritual world that we all face. Each chapter briefly summarizes a topic related to these unseen influences that surround us. Following each chapter are example prayers of how to pray, targetting the issues addressed. This book is for those seeking freedom from unwanted spiritual oppression, and all who welcome helpful material to aid their relationship with God will likely find something of value in these chapters.
Prayers that Work was written in response to a need in Christian literature for subject matter related to curses, blessings, and sources of spiritual oppression to be addressed in one book in a straightforward, topic-by-topic way, with prayer examples included.
The motivation to write Prayers that Work arose from a need I saw in Christian literature. After reviewing books in the genres of spiritual growth, healing, and deliverance, I noticed that some authors would develop a concept only to provide little direction on how to apply the knowledge. For example, in reading about “soul ties,” a topic covered in one of the chapters, the question “How can I pray into this?” remained unanswered. I knew a good prayer would demonstrate the author’s ideas. I went through the entire book only to find the author hadn’t provided any. After reading my fourth book on the topic and seeing the same thing repeated, I realized this was an issue. Although published prayer books exist, there’s a need for more content that gives a good understanding, addresses related theological questions, and provides the means for application.
Early in my Christian ministry, I experienced the reality of the spiritual world, creating a deep conviction that things sometimes occur in people’s lives that have a spiritual cause. I will share some of these supernatural encounters. A number of these experiences prompted me to ask questions such as, “How does this work?” and “Is there a biblical basis for this?” I wanted to understand the dynamics of how the spiritual world worked and ensure that the ideas I was forming were doctrinally sound. My pursuits have led me to review a large variety of literature and teachings over the past few decades, which reinforced my interest to see more material providing a bridge between theory and application.
In my ministry, I’ve been blessed to see people freed from spiritual obstacles, often resulting in dramatic changes in their lives. I’ve noticed a handful of recurring themes that affect people, and these have formed the chapters of Prayers that Work. A number of stories have been included to make the reading more engaging. The names of people have been changed for privacy reasons.
Finally, in recent years I’ve had opportunities to edit books by Christian authors, and, without fail, the biggest issue is redundancy. The gist of a book can often be gleaned from a portion of its content. Instead of an encyclopedia, sometimes a to-the-point treatment of a topic would be fine. Most people won’t read a tome on curses to find out if they are being affected by one. I felt that if you can give someone the takeaway about a topic in a five-minute conversation, it can often be explained in a short chapter.
These reflections formed my vision for a book with brief chapters addressing spiritual topics that are relevant, and organized under one cover. As I thought about how helpful something like this would be, I tried to think of other books like this already out there. At the time of writing, I wasn’t aware of anything like this already written.
