A cozy, slice of life GameLit about a man and his farm.
Drake needed a new start, and the small farm on the outskirts of the kingdom seemed like the perfect chance. Just one problem: he doesn’t know the first thing about farming. He’s also not sure how to deal with the giant, magical rooster that lives on his farm. But it’s a fresh start, and Drake intends to make the best of it.
Daily chores, a slew of monsters, and a haunted garden are one thing, but when his past catches up to him, Drake will have to learn to juggle his new responsibilities, a budding social life, and a secret that could cost him everything.
I will update this when I get further in, but the first chapter has such awful co tridictory descriptions that my head just about exploded. We have a chicken the size of a large wolf (3 ft tall) with a beak large enough to swallow him whole ( 12-16 ft tall chicken?) That was as tall as a man (6 feet tall). So a six foot tall chicken would have a large beak, large enough to eat your hand, but not near large enough to swallow you whole... heck, if the chicken is as tall as you, that would mean the black was as large as the chicken! We have three completely contradictory descriptions practically in the same sentence!
This could be nitpicky, and the author was exaggerating the descriptions to show that the dude was freaking out, but it really bugged me.
Next, the as thicken was getting ready to spew fire its "gullet" was moving... so the gullet is a)not actually an organ in the chicken, b) I think is reffering to either the gizzard (stomach) or crop (intestines), so we can see the internal organs on the bottom of a six (or 12, maybe 3?) foot tall chicken moving? So this chicken has some kind of belly dance move before spewing fire? Pretty sure you wouldn't be able to see that while your staring at the front of the chicken... if you can see it at all...
I can't envision these descriptions at all, and I really hope they improve as I co tinue reading. If they do I will return and update my review.
This was an extremely wholesome and cozy read with just the barest hint of litrpg.
My one and only complaint is that there is some confusion of currency. It starts of with gold, and then switch to crowns. And then go back and forth until the rest of the story only mention crowns. I'm not sure if the author changed the name of it and forgot to edit it, or if there are really two currencies in the story. Since a big part of the progression in this book (and it is advertised as progression) is about how much the MC is farming, and selling off said crops. It's a little disappointing that the reader don't get told more details about what money the MC gets. He goes from saying he has 1000 gold, to saying he has 75 crowns, to suddenly having 900 crowns later.
But other than that, this book was near perfect. It is clear it has inspiration from games like Stardew Valley, but it had enough unique pieces in it that it didn't feel like a straight rip of. The writing was also decent.
I enjoyed this story immensely. Everything has a cozy overtone. The secret past is relatively innocuous. Monster fights are short and usually only a sentence. The people of the village are kind and eager to help. My only complaint is that some of the details can be shallow. The magic system feels like it could use more depth. Many of the solutions feel one and done. Not like a tool that a farmer might use again in the future. I would still recommend it for a fun read.
Wonderfully nostalgic for me. Reminded me of all the different farming games that started me into the gaming world. Would love to see where the story goes. Relaxing but entertaining, with humor and enough momentum and purpose to the story so as to not be boring. Great read! There are not enough farming type fantasy stories available. Keep it up! :)
Has the dumbass not heard of gloves when dealing with rusted/splintered tools/weapons?
Do slice-of-life gamelit stories exist that deal with actual farming/crafting stuff where everything is peaceful or will there always be hostile creatures, a dumb MC, wiser side characters that should have been the MC, and that dreaded insta-love?
At first, I thought this would be a take on the 'Oh, Great...' series, or maybe Battle Mage Farmer. But I am happy to report that it carves out its own niche. Yes, it's a book about farming, which is becoming a minor trend, but a lot more happens besides that. We even have a dangerous rooster similar to 'Beware of Chicken'.
Drake is from the city. He makes a mistake and manages to escape, buying a broken down farm on the edge of the empire. There he discovers secrets galore and meets various beings. The pace is mostly sedate, but I was still engaged the entire way. The farmer faces challenges only a farmer will ever be aware of, and there's even a minor romantic interest.
All in all, a lot of fun. The only thing I don't understand is why more people aren't reading it.
The editing is good and the stats are there making this a true gamelit story.
This was a nice cozy read, just what I wanted based on the book title. Surprisingly (in a good way), this wasn't an isekai - just someone from the same world wanting to put distance from certain issues. The prologue left an impression that wasn't clarified for a while, which had me confused whether I had read something wrong. The pacing was good, moving the plot along with just the right amount of worldbuilding details and mysteries. The payoffs when the MC completed tasks was also good. Overall, a nice lighthearted story - just wish it had been longer and explored more about the characters.
Overall entertaining. Itis a very slow paced story most of it slice of life day to day themed. I had a few isues with sexisim, when they are discussing the "having a wife" or "all the female adventurers". I believe that if writers start using general terms instead of female/male despite who the MC will end up with. I also had an issue with romance...it was unnecessary it is a farming book. It is a nice book to read if you have the time. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
I loved the storyline, the book ended really well wrapping up the plot line nicely while leaving enough to continue the story line. Great character development and a couple of great side characters as well.
I liked this. The world system is fun and simple without the pages upon pages of stats and character sheets. The story had enough action to keep it rolling but it kept the slice of life feel.
Really good book. Good story about farming. Not to serious. Slice of life in a fantasy world. Enjoyed reading about the main character and his struggles on building a farm. Can’t wait for the next one.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and entertaining. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is definitely worth checking out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was cute and funny and not what I am used to. This is a slice-of-life cozy fantasy with LitRPG and romance subplots, which makes it a perfect Autumn/ Winter book because all I wanted to do was curl up in a blanket and binge this story.
Some slice of life books can be a little boring but not this one! I read it straight through and enjoyed it the whole way. I can’t wait till the next book comes out!
