Wegelius är en historieberättare av rang. Historien om Sally Jones förtjänar att bli en klassiker och passar nästan precis alla. Det är det inte många böcker som gör. Den falska rosen läste jag i nästan ett svep, från första till sista sidan.
Kommer aldrig glömma hur jag blev introducerad till den första boken i serien - en mamma högläste ur den för sina tre barn (6-14! år gamla) på stranden. Jag kunde inte sluta (tjuv)lyssna och begav mig till biblioteket för att låna boken nästa dag, jag var 33 år gammal.

Tiesiog universaliai gera knyga – sakyčiau, nereikia net susigalvoti, kokiam čia vaikui ją neva perkat, pirkit sau ir skaitykit nesigėdydami! Šioje knygoje beždžionė mašinistė Salė Džouns ir jos bičiulis Šefas nori grąžinti rastą vėrinį teisėtam savininkui ir pakliūva Škotijos nusikaltėliams į nagus. Pradėjau knygą vakare, ketindama paskaityti kokį 100 psl, bet nuėjau miegoti 3 nakties, kartu su Sale Džouns užbaigusi visą paslaptingojo vėrinio nuotykį. Visiems rekomenduoju!

Salė Džouns sugrįžo! Pernai romanas "Žudiko beždžionė" buvo malonus atradimas - skaičiau aš ir dukra, o dar rekomendavau ir kitiems. Protingoji beždžionėlė mašinistė Salė Džouns įsiminė ilgam ir labai nudžiugau, kai pasirodė kita istorijos dalis - puolėme skaityti kartu su dukra.
Salė Džouns ir Šefas visai ramiai gyveno po paskutinių nuotykių, remontavo savo laivą "Hadsono karalienę", kol... laive nerado perlų vėrinio su rožės pakabučiu. Šefas su Sale Džouns nusprendė surasti vėrinio savininkę - iš Lisabonos jų kelias nusidriekė į Glazgą ir ne tik... Salė Džouns patenka pas gangsterius ir tampa gaujos įkaite bei patiria daugybę nuotykių. Bet tuo veikėjų kelionės nesibaigė...
Tiek "Žudiko beždžionė", tiek "Rožės apgaulė" yra apie draugystes: senas ir naujas. Romane sutinkame tiek senus draugus: Senjorą Fidardo, Aną Moliną, tiek Salė Džouns susiranda naujų. Draugiškumas, sąžiningumas ir pasiaukojimas - apie tai pasakoja šaunioji beždžionėlė.
Veiksmo buvo nei per daug, nei per mažai - tobulai tiek, kiek reikia. Nenuobodu ir vis kažkas naujo. O kur dar Salės Džouns humoro jausmas - visad laiku ir vietoje. Nors dabar veiksmo buvo daugiau sausumoje, bet tikrai nepamiršti laivai ir jų teikiama nepriklausomybė. Rašytojas puikiai sukūrė laikmečio atmosferą, atrodė vaikščiočiau siaurom Glazgo gatvelėm, girdėčiau uosto garsus.
Manau, kad knyga tiks ir vyresniems pradinukams, ir paaugliams, ir netgi suaugusiems, kurie pasiilgo nuotykių, veiksmo, gėrio ir draugystės. Mums abiems labai patiko - tikiuosi patiks ir jums.

Första boken om Sally Jones, Mördarens apa, är en sagolikt fin och spännande bok. Legenden om Sally Jones tyckte jag också mycket om. Den här har jag väntat på länge och jag blev inte besviken. Att den utspelar sig delvis i Lissabon är ett stort plus.

Per la seconda volta, e sempre nell’edizione gioiellino targata Iperborea, Jakob Wegelius ci regala un’irresistibile avventura avente per protagonisti Sally Jones, speciale scimmia marinara, capace di leggere e scrivere e dotata di grande intelligenza e arguzia oltre che di profonda sensibilità, e il suo capo, l’irrequieto e onesto marinaio Henry Koskela. Alla fine de “La scimmia dell’assassino” li avevamo lasciati nell’affascinante Lisbona e lì li ritroviamo, in attesa di partire a bordo della loro “Hudson Queen” e solcare nuovi mari (a tal proposito, non avendo letto il primi volume proprio recentemente, ho molto apprezzato il riepilogo che ne viene fatto nelle rime pagine). Ma ecco che, proprio a partire da una collana preziosa rinvenuta nascosta a bordo della “Hudson Queen”, si apre per loro una nuova avventura fatta di furti, inganni, travestimenti e infinite sorprese e che li porterà dalla passionale Lisbona alla violenta Glasgow dominata dalle gang specializzate nel contrabbando.
Non ricordo di aver letto, fra le pagine, riferimenti agli anni in cui le vicende di Sally Jones sono ambientate ma presuppongo si parli degli anni 30 del secolo scorso. I personaggi sono parecchi e lo stesso Wegelius ce li illustra nelle prime pagine, fornendoci bellissimi ritratti realistici che ci catapultano nella storia, insieme alle funambolesche avventure narrate. Ma c’è tanto altro. Il personaggio di Sally Jones è stupendo: dotata di un’intelligenza emotiva inaspettata per i personaggi della vicenda, i suoi pensieri colpiscono spesso per la sensibilità, la profondità, la generosità e la semplicità che tutti gli altri, persi nei loro foschi affari, sembrano aver dimenticato. Si tifa per lei, ci si affeziona a lei e si soffre con un po’ di rabbia nel leggere i passi del romanzo in cui viene sottovalutata e sfruttata come tanti umani sottovalutano e sfruttano gli animali nella realtà. Invece è proprio grazie a lei, tra altro voce narrante della storia, che tutto prende forma e, alla fine, si ricostruisce. Sarebbe curioso sapere da Jakob Wegelius se, dietro alla costruzione di un così bel personaggio, c’è la volontà di riflettere sul tema animalista, oppure se Sally Jones è un semplice e geniale prodotto di fantasia senza secondi fine, come potrebbe essere qualunque personaggio.
In definitiva, non posso non consigliare questa lettura. Perfetta per chi ama i grandi classici d’avventura d’altri tempi ma godibilissima per chiunque ami semplicemente essere in compagnia di un ottimo libro. Da leggere, ovviamente dopo “La Scimmia dell’assassino”.

As a child and young teen, I read many different kinds of books, but my favourites were always those which described exotic adventures steeped in mystery, with brave characters who embarked on fantastic ventures. So when The False Rose fell into my hands, I was beyond excited to read it and get lost in its pages.
The False Rose, translated from the Swedish by Peter Graves and published by Pushkin Press, is the third instalment in the Sally Jones series (the previous ones being The Legend of Sally Jones and The Murderer's Ape which are also available by Pushkin Press). You can easily follow and enjoy the story even if you haven't read the previous books. There are several pages at the beginning of the book introducing the characters with wonderful black and white drawings for each one, and there is a mini recap of sorts every time an event or character from a previous book is referenced. So fear not and dive right in this delightful adventure with lovely Sally Jones and her friends.
The story opens in Lisbon, where we are introduced to the protagonist, Sally Jones, an 'anthropoid ape' that works as a ship engineer. Along with the Chief, they discover a rose-shaped necklace on their ship, the Hudson Queen, and they become entangled in the mystery surrounding its previous owner. Sally and the Chief embark on a quest to return the necklace to its rightful owner, a quest that leads them to the gloomy and shady parts of Glasgow.
However, nothing is as easy as it seems and the mystery of the necklace isn't all that straightforward. Sally and the Chief encounter dangerous street gangs and the intimidating smuggler queen Moira, who will do everything in her power to obtain the necklace for herself.
The story is intriguing and gripping until the very end and I was at the edge of my seat with every twist and turn. I grew very attached to Sally Jones, who is also the narrator of the story, thus letting the reader in on her thoughts and feelings, since she cannot really speak in the book (but she can read and write, skills that come in very handy at times!).
I also really loved reading the descriptions of the places Sally and the Chief travel to or find themselves in. Not having been able to travel myself at all the past two years, it was a true delight to embark on a journey through the pages of this book from Lisbon to Glasgow, where the majority of the plot takes place, and later on to the Scottish Highlands and the French countryside. The mystery was also very interesting, although there were various other sub-plots that had to get resolved before the solution was provided at the end.
All in all, The False Rose is a perfect cosy read for those gloomy autumn and winter afternoons. Although it is targeted towards younger readers, it can be read and enjoyed by people of any age, as it has all the ingredients to keep you turning page after page - great writing (and a great translation, I'm sure), an engaging mystery/adventure plot and wonderful characters that will remain with you long after you've turned the last page. Reading this book was a thoroughly enjoyable experience that provided me with some much needed escapism and brought me back to my very early teens, when I was reading such gripping page-turners every chance I had.

Jakob Wegeliuksen Merten gorilla on mielestäni eräs parhaista lukemistani lastenromaaneista 2000-luvun puolella, joten sen itsenäiseksi jatko-osaksi mainittu Hudson Queenin ruusu (WSOY, 2021) täytyi ottaa ilman muuta luettavaksi sekin.
Gorilla Sally Jones ja hänen paras ystävänsä, suomalainen merimies Henry Koskela, päätyvät tällä kertaa selvittämään kallisarvoisen kaulakorun arvoitusta. Seikkailu vie toverukset Glasgow'hun, jossa he saavat huomata muidenkin kiinnostuneen aarteesta. Sally päätyy osaksi häikäilemättömän Moira Grayn rikollisjengiä ja keskelle alamaailman välienselvittelyä. Suuren gangsterisodan keskellä Sallyn ystävällisyys ja neuvokkuus pääsevät jälleen oikeuksiinsa.
En muista että edellisen romaanin tapahtuma- aikaa olisi hirvittävän tarkasti spesifioitu, mutta nyt käy ilmi, että jossakin 1930-luvulla liikutaan. Ja mikäpä ettei, sitähän on nimitetty Corto Maltese -taiteilija Hugo Prattin mukaan viimeiseksi
romanttisten seikkailijoiden vuosikymmeneksi! Wegelius on muutenkin saanut ladattua teoksensa vanhan liiton meininkiä, ja moderneista lastenromaaneista sen erottaa myös se tosiseikka, että lapsihenkilöt loistavat tyystin poissaolollaan.
"Hudson Queenin ruusun" voi lukea itsenäisenä seikkailuromaanina, mutta suosittelisin kuitenkin tarttumaan "Merten gorillan" ennen tähän kajoamista, sen verran aikaisempiin tapahtumiin ja henkilöihin viitataan.

Sally Jones is just the most wonderful friend you could have. What an adventure!!

I am a fan of The murderer's Ape. So naturally I was thrilled to follow more adventures of Sally Jones, the cleverest ape in the world. Here more adventures await Chief and Sally Jones, though Sally Jones remains the heroine. There are hidden necklaces in ship, a cockerel who might be an important clue, gang wars, and more. A large part of the story is set in the underworld of Glasgow. Similar to the Murderer's Ape, there's a mystery to solve, people to find. But that isn't easy because of other powerful people, gangs(!), and clues that throw Sally Jones off the track. I missed seeing more of the characters in The Murderer's Ape. Also the story was more predictable than the adrenaline rushed Murderer's Ape. But I still enjoyed the read. It was engaging and just the right thing for a weekend.

Lukematta Merten gorillaa tämä jatko-osa lumosi ja toimi ihan hyvin itsenäisenäkin kirjana. Nyt kyllä kiinnostaa miten Pomon ja Sally Jonesin tarina on saanut alkunsa. Hudson Queenien ruusu oli jännittävä ja mukaansatempaava tarina, josta ei yllättäviä käänteitä puuttunut. Kunnon perinteinen seikkailu, jonka tunnelma oli ainutlaatuinen. Välillä aivan unohti lukevansa lapsille tai paremminkin nuorille suunnattua tarinaa. Loistava, ihana ja mahtava!

The wonderful Sally Jones is back. I loved her in "The Murderer's Ape" and "The Legend of Sally Jones", and yeah, she's terrific here, too.
This time, Sally Jones and The Chief, Henry Koskela, are in Lisbon and taking a variety of jobs on to make enough money to continue repairs on their ship, the Hudson Queen. One of Sally's jobs entails maintaining the steam engine for the carousel of a travelling circus. The man who gets her the job seems to have a connection with their ship (Sally thinks he might be searching it for some unknown reason). And Sally discovers he may also be the former engineer for a Captain with a less than friendly reputation, who was known to have both a daughter he abandoned, and an unrequited desire to find her once he struck it rich.
Sally and Chief soon find what the former engineer was looking for: a necklace with flawless, large pearls and a silver and mother of pearl pendant. This necklace will set the two off a perilous trip to Glasgow and some pretty fraught and dangerous adventures over the course of a year. This includes the Chief getting blackmailed by a Scottish criminal into running whiskey to the US, and Sally being held hostage by the criminal to ensure Chief's compliance.
Sally doesn't just sit around, scared as she is; she's soon helping the criminal's gang with the heavy lifting of contraband, and various other ill-gotten gains, and becoming inadvertently embroiled in a gang war in Glasgow. Sally suffers a lot during her year alone (my heart bled for this gentle, kind being) but manages to maintain her hope and make a few critical friends.
I love Sally Jones so much! She is a wonderful character, and horrible as the things she undergoes in this book, she was just so strong and kind, trying all the time she was a prisoner to find a way to both make her time a little easier on her, and find a way to escape.
Jakob Wegelius has created another terrific adventure story, with interesting characters and much adversity. Both Sally and The Chief undergo many difficult challenges, but Sally's plight was much more frightening. That she retained her optimism and kindness throughout, and her ability to forgive afterwards, was pretty amazing. I would follow Sally Jones anywhere, on any adventure, if only to watch her, though her determination and caring disposition, find her way through her troubles, and usually better off afterwards.

This includes the Chief getting blackmailed by a Scottish criminal into running whiskey to the US, and Sally being held hostage by the criminal to ensure Chief's compliance.
Sally doesn't just sit around, scared as she is; she's soon helping the criminal's gang with the heavy lifting of contraband, and various other ill-gotten gains, and becoming inadvertently embroiled in a gang war in Glasgow. Sally suffers a lot during her year alone (my heart bled for this gentle, kind being) but manages to maintain her hope and make a few critical friends.
I love Sally Jones so much! She is a wonderful character, and horrible as the things she undergoes in this book, she was just so strong and kind, trying all the time she was a prisoner to find a way to both make her time a little easier on her, and find a way to escape.
Jakob Wegelius has created another terrific adventure story, with interesting characters and much adversity. Both Sally and The Chief undergo many difficult challenges, but Sally's plight was much more frightening. That she retained her optimism and kindness throughout, and her ability to forgive afterwards, was pretty amazing. I would follow Sally Jones anywhere, on any adventure, if only to watch her, though her determination and caring disposition, find her way through her troubles, and usually better off afterwards.

This is why I shouldn’t read sequels. The Murderer’s Ape was a pure delight and perfect companion on my long sea voyage to Spain back in May. Its every character and plot twist twinkle and the pages flew by. By contrast, this was … fine, but unnecessary. The plot turns on a pearl necklace Sally Jones the gorilla and Captain Koskela find hidden on their boat. Its centerpiece is a carved mother-of-pearl and silver rose and it belongs to Rose Henderson, the estranged daughter of Shetland Jack. They decide to return it to the rightful owner, but before they can track Rose down the necklace is stolen and a whole spiral is set underway. Once again, Sally Jones is separated from her captain and has to survive by her wits. Held prisoner by Glasgow bootleggers, she has to let them think her deaf and dumb, but makes friends with a former boxer named Bernie, who’s in thrall to his sister, harsh gang boss Moira. The final 100 pages or so, as everything finally unwinds, is satisfying, but it took me forever to make it there. I missed the supporting characters of the first book and gangster stories aren’t my jam.

Jag älskar Jakob Wegelius böcker! Och böckerna om Sally Jones är inget undantag. Med fantastiska illustrationer följer vi Sally på hennes tredje äventyr. Sally och Henry Koskela är med sina vänner i Lissabon för att laga deras båt, The Hudson queen. En mystisk man börjar prata med Sally och Henry och verkar väldigt intresserad av deras båt...lite senare när Sally håller på med reparationerna på båten finner hon ett värdefullt halsband med stora pärlor och ett hänge av silver i form av en ros. Efter detta börjar mycket spännande hända och det är en sån glädje att läsa om Sally Jones! För det är en riktig äventyrsberättelse men det är ofta även mysigt och med en stor portion kärlek till människor, djur och mat.

Disappointing. Compared to the Murderers ape, this lacked sparkle and charm. Couldn't persuade my 12 yo to read it even though she liked the first one, should have listened to her!

A children's book that adults shouldn't miss out on!
Sally Jones is the first engineer of a ship, the Hudson Queen, captained by her good friend, affectionately known as the Chief. She also happens to be an ape which gives us a fantastically unique narrator. She doesn't speak but can read and write as well as any human and is probably more intelligent than a lot of them. I haven't read The Murderer's Ape yet but this sequel is so beautifully crafted (the cover, endpapers and artwork are amazing and the production quality is top notch) that I was keen to see if the story merited such a gorgeous-looking book. I was a bit worried that I'd be at a disadvantage but the author gives us just enough context and introduces us to the main characters. Neatly done.
Then the action starts in Lisbon. A suspicious character appears and a mysterious necklace discovered, hidden on the Hudson Queen. We're then transported to (what feels like 20s or 30s) Glasgow as Sally Jones and the Chief try to track down the necklace's owner. Our intrepid duo are soon deceived and sucked into a dangerous world of smugglers and gangsters. Sally is taken prisoner and forced to work for one of the gangs, in fear of her life. We get to know a marvellous cast of characters, both good and bad. No-one and nothing is as it seems as Sally learns more about them. Some lovely friendships are formed alongside some strange ones! There's no shortage of mystery, twists, breathtaking adventure, genuine danger and drama. The perfectly-sized chapters had me eagerly page turning and rooting for Sally and her friends.
This is the ideal children's book because adults will want it as well. Intelligently written but accessible. It feels and reads beautifully. Both author and translator have done an incredible job. You don't need to read The Murderer's Ape to enjoy it but I immediately added that to my To Read list. Sally Jones is a heroine we need more of - different, clever, courageous and with a lot of heart.

If only I could award more than 5 stars. I absolutely loved this book. Sally Jones has lost none of her appeal. I was immediately transported back into her world and became absorbed in the characters and plot. Such superb storytelling; the pace is just right, fast enough to create the necessary tension but gentle enough for you to feel lulled and comforted. I really didn’t want this story to end, but at the same time, I couldn’t put it down.

Merten gorillan jatko-osakin piti minut hyvin otteessaan, ja suosittelen kirjaa kaikille niille, jotka pitävät hieman vanhanaikaisista mutta kunnollisista seikkailusta. Kakkososa on sävyltään selvästi synkempi kuin ykkösosa, mutta Wegelius vsrmaan ajattelee lukijoidenkin kasvaneen kirjojen välissä. Niin ja lopussa kaikki palaset kyllä loksahtavat paikalleen parhain päin.
Wegelius on erittäin taitava tarinoitsija ja kuvittaja, joten jään odottamaan, mitä hän kirjoittaa seuraavaksi. Kiitokset ansaitsee myös suomentaja Kati Valli!

I just adored finding out what happens next to The Chief and Sally Jones next. There is something unique about the way the story is told. I was totally engrossed from the moment I started and loved all the new characters.
Definitely recommend reading The Murderers Ape first as it adds so much more to the story. I have a personal connection to Glasgow and loved all the descriptions of the people and the place.

Als Gorilla kann sie mit Menschen nicht verbal kommunizieren, doch ihre Zeichensprache ist ausgeprägt und sie kann sich schriftlich mitteilen. Sally Jones und ihr Freund Chief Kapitän Koskela hatten ein altes Dampfschiff gekauft, auf dem sie im Hafen von Lissabon wohnen, einen schottischen Clyde Puffer, und sie wollen es wieder seefähig machen. Unter anderem benötigen sie eine neue Dampfmaschine. Kein billiges Vergnügen. Und deshalb nehmen sie jeden Job an, den sie bekommen können. Sie arbeiten im Hafen beim Ein- und Ausladen der Schiffe oder sind als Handwerker unterwegs. Befreundet sind sie mit der Sängerin Ana Molina und dem Instrumentenbauer Luigi Fidardo.

Und dann entdeckt sie genau diesen Mann auf dem Schiff, hält sich fern, bis er verschwunden ist. Als der Chief zurück ist, erzählt sie ihm davon. Was kann hier verborgen sein? Als Luigi Fidardo das Steuerrad ausbessert, findet er ein Geheimfach, indem eine wertvolle Perlenkette versteckt ist, die den Namen Rose trägt. Die Freunde forschen nach dem Hersteller der Kette und nach dem Besitzer und und kommen der tragischen Geschichte von Shetland Jack und seiner Tochter Rose auf die Spur. Der Chief und Sally wollen Rose die Kette zurückgeben. Bloß, wo mag Rose wohnen?
Die Spur zum Juwelier führt die Freunde nach Glasgow. Doch hier werden sie einen Hinterhalt gelockt und von der Schmugglerkönigin Moira Gray und ihrer Bande gefangen genommen, die meint, die Kette gehöre ihr. Obendrauf sperrt sie Sally ein, droht sie zu töten, wenn der Chief nicht einen Auftrag für sie erledigt. An sich ist das eine spannende Geschichte: Die Kette, brutaler Ganoven-Bandenkrieg in Glasgow, Raubzüge. Nur merkwürdigerweise hat mich die Story nicht richtig packen können. Ich habe das Buch immer wieder beiseitegelegt, bis ich durch war. Woran lag es? Die Handlung zieht sich, das war ein Punkt. Sally ist ein empathischer Charakter, der nur das Gute in jedem Menschen sieht, sie ist freundlich und mitfühlend. Darum wird sie ständig ausgetrickst, über das Ohr gehauen. Ein Gorilla ist stark und mächtig, provozierend, dominant – Sally ist das Gegenteil. Im Prinzip ist sie eher ein Opfertyp. Sie wehrt sich nicht, lässt sich festnehmen, in Ketten legen, einsperren, versucht, nicht zu entkommen, und sie hat ein Herz für jeden, sogar für einen der Gangster, eben weil er der Außenseiter ist, nicht die hellste Kerze auf der Torte, ausgelacht wird. Sally beobachtet, zieht Schlüsse, ist intelligent. Aber sie zaudert, hat Angst – kein agierender Charakter. Ich mag Antihelden normalerweise, weil sie irgendwann aus sich herausgehen. Doch Sally bleibt passiv. Solche Charaktere liegen mir nicht, sie nehmen die Spannung. Es war wohl das, was mich nicht warmwerden ließ. Und die Geschichte ist mir zu vorhersehbar. Ein guter Kinderroman, ohne Zweifel, wenn man ein Herz für Sally findet. Der Gerstenbergverlag gibt eine Altersempfehlung ab 11 Jahren, das passt. Wunderschön sind die Porträts der Handelnden, die Jakob Wegelius gezeichnet hat. Federzeichnungen, die in die Zeit um 1900 fühlen lassen. I ”Den falska rosen” av Jacob Wegelius får läsaren återigen bekanta sig med Sally Jones och hennes närmsta kamrat Henry Koskela eller Chiefen som han kallas. Det har gått en tid sedan händelserna som utspelade sig kring Alphonse Morros försvinnande och Sally Jones och Chiefen bestämmer sig för att rusta upp Hudson Queen som legat på botten av floden Tejo. När Hudson Queen väl får möta livet ovanför ytan på nytt blir hon ett intresse för en man vid namnet Harvey Jenkins. Snart syns Jenkins smyga omkring på Hudson Queen om nätterna och det tar inte lång tid innan Sally Jones upptäcker detta. Vad Jenkins tycks leta efter har hon ingen aning om men när båten sakta men säkert renoveras dyker föremålet som Jenkins troligen har varit ute efter upp, nämligen ett pärlhalsband med en vacker ros som hänge. Det dröjer inte länge förrän Sally Jones och Chiefen får reda på sanningen bakom halsbandet och de dras in i en serie av händelser som till slut leder dem fram till dess rätta ägare men vägen dit är krokig och på nytt tvingas Sally Jones och Chiefen skiljas från varandra på obestämd tid.
Eftersom jag har läst ”Mördarens apa” är det svårt att inte göra en jämförelse av de båda böckerna och i mina ögon saknar ”Den falska rosen” det spänningsmoment som ”Mördarens apa” har. Självfallet finns det ett driv men det känns många gånger som att författaren har styckat upp texten i onödigt många stycken vilket i min mening bidrar till att läsningen känns hackig och att man inte kommer in i berättelsen på djupet då många händelser beskrivs flyktigt. Precis som ”Mördarens apa” innehåller ”Den falska rosen” ett inledande porträttgalleri av bokens karaktärer och illustrationerna är fantasifulla och vackra.
”Den falska rosen” är helt klart värd att läsa då det alltid är spännande att kasta sig in i Jacob Wegelius fantasi.
