Award-winning author and songwriter, Cheryl DaVeiga loves making people laugh through her Biff Bam Booza books and sing-along songs. Her stories are packed with humor, rhyme, and pun-filled wordplay—fun for the whole family!
A former business executive from New Jersey, Cheryl’s true passion was always music. A late-night songwriting habit inspired by her then seven-year-old nephew turned into a full creative shift. She began writing and recording children’s songs as the cartoon character CADi Grace, and she was hooked! That playful beginning led to award-winning adult songs—including an ASCAP honor for a veterans’ anthem, the featured song for Alabama’s Bicentennial, the theme for the Where Angels Play Foundation, and a top summer pick by NJ Arts.
But children's projects stole her heart. Cheryl began turning story-songs into books—and books back into songs. Today, she’s the creator of a growing catalog of laugh-out-loud picture books and animated sing-along videos.

Cheryl's latest release, War at the Ice Cream Store 2: Rocky Road vs The Sundae Storm, brings back the beloved ice cream crew and fun new characters for another deliciously wild adventure.
This was such a cute picture book and I just loved the illustrations also. The book starts by introducing us to Dr. Pete the Porcupine who helps all the animals in the desert with their problems by mixing up magic potions for them, the potions can heal any ailment that the animals have. One day, he hits a blank when the animals call for his help to cure and turn the nasty cactus into a nice person as he is a bully of a plant. He is nasty and cruel to all the animals and a big meanist to all the animals around. They have called Dr. Porcupine to help as if anyone can turn him nice, it is Pete the Porcupine. Now Pete must put on his thinking hat and try several potions to get to the root of why the cactus is mean. This was a very good read and has a great moral to the story as we watch the cactus change his tune and learn why he was mean in the first place and it shows that sometimes all we need is someone to show us kindness and to persevere for us to change our moods. The Prickly Problem by Cheryl DaVeiga is the perfect read for children aged 5-8 years old.
The "Biff Boom Booza Series" includes Cheryl DaVeiga's lovable story, The Prickly Problem (featuring Dr. Pete the Porcupine).
Dr. Pete provides the neighborhood critters inhabiting a scorching, dry desert with solutions to their “prickly” issues. His homemade medicinal concoctions are anything but typical, though. All of the names are cute and imaginative, some even more so, like Flim Flam Jam and Rash Bash Butter.
Luis Peres' inventive, ingenious illustrations for the story are sure to amuse readers of all ages, too. The images are bright and very eye-catching.
All the critters, together with their "prickly" issues, were adored by my two-year-old granddaughter. She was relieved that she didn't have any "prickly troubles," since she was worried that Dr. Pete would stab her, even if he was wearing a jacket to protect her from the quills.
Because of the cactus' unpleasant, mean tendencies toward the neighborhood pals, she was was worried and on the edge of her seat waiting to see what would happen. She stated her dislike for "mean" things and people, expressing happiness when they were no longer mean.
Children will gain a wealth of life lessons, including those related to empathy, kindness, loneliness and love, to name a few.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
The Prickly Problem: Dr. Pete the Porcupine by Cheryl DaVeiga is such a cute book. Dr. Pete Porcupine loved his desert neighbors, and was glad when he could solve their problems. One day Dr. Pete had a good day in the office, but all of his friends were waiting on him as he came out of his office. There was a problem with Cactus Jack, he was so mean and rude. But could Dr. Pete help Jack?
This is such an adorable children’s book. You child is sure to love Dr Pete and all of his desert friends. There’s Rhonda the Roadrunner, Liz the Lizard, and more as Dr. Pete solved their Prickly problems. And Luis Peres does an amazing job with the illustrations in this book. The colors of the animals match the animals and each one is so adorable. Who would think desert animals could look adorable, but these are! I think your child will love this book for their library. This is also an adorable book for any elementary school library as well as in any daycare. And it would be perfect for Dr. offices!
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

➡️My thoughts:
The Prickly Problem isn’t just an adorable children’s book. It’s the kind of children’s book that makes you feel ALL the feels.
Dr. Pete the Porcupine mixes up potions to help all his desert friends feel better, but struggles to figure out how to help a rude cactus be nicer to his friends. I thought this was a lovely story to help children explore ways to help others, ways to ASK for help, and to remind kids that when we make assumptions about others, we may likely be incorrect.
I read this with my 10 year old daughter who LOVED IT, and especially pointed out the fantastic illustrations!
The story was unique, and that ending was SO sweet, I absolutely loved it. I think it’s a great story for all ages, as well as a possible teaching tool with children who struggle identifying their emotions.
Who would think that a porcupine could be so soft and cuddly…on the inside?! Well, that’s exactly the case for Dr. Pete. In this sweet story about friendship and compassion, we see this sharp little guy model a perfectly soft demeanor as he attempts to help all of his desert friends with their various problems.
Books like these are so great because they are cute, entertaining and project a wonderful message! My little one, in particular, just loves stories about animals…the more random and obscure the better! Of course, this was right up her alley! And so we had to follow up by reading more of the author’s books - War at the Ice Cream Store and Rocket Red. We were NOT disappointed. She laughed and loved every one of them…and, so did I!
If you have kids, you should really check these books out. They are all amazing!
⭐️BOOK REVIEW⭐️ This was another cute book by @cheryldaveiga , brought to me by @ireadbooktours ! Thank you for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.😊
The illustrations were spot on in this book. Kudos to the illustrator of this one! I loved all the animals and variety included, and the backgrounds. The fun potions and rhyming words made it great for reading to kids. I really expected this one to be a favorite by my niece, and it kept her attention for the most part. From my opinion, I voted to give this one a five star, and would recommend it for kids 3-9. It had plenty of what I expected out of a kids book and I’m not the only adult of my family who enjoyed this one! 🦔
My niece’s review: “I give it… 3 and a half stars! The ice cream book is still my favorite of these ones.” (She is referring to War At The Ice Cream Store by this same author).
Overall, between my 5 and her 3.5, I give this book a:
This book is so adorable. I had a big smile on my face as I read it. Jake the Snake’s rattler is not rattling. He needs Tall Tail Snake Oil. Sting the Scorpion stinger not stinging? Fixed with Rash Bash Butter. But how does Dr. Pete the Porcupine help Cactus Jack who is just plain mean? You will have to read the book to find out.
The illustrations are colorful and fun to peruse.
Your kids, grandkids, students will love this book as they learn about compassion and kindness. I highly recommend this book.
Sweet book Dr. Porcupine solves ‘prickly’ problems. And his patients adore the way Dr. Porcupine solves the problems. Unfortunately Jack Cacti is not an easy patient. Lovely story with beautiful illustrations explaining kindness, empathy and love for all. Enjoyable for adults too.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from iRead Book Tours. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
Dr. Pete is a porcupine who treats the ailments of all of his neighbors. Each ailment is followed by a hug. When his neighbors ask him to try to stop Jack the cactus’s mean comments, he’s not sure he can help. Is Jack just plain mean, or does he need compassion?
I love this story! It teaches about compassion and kindness and porcupines! At the end of the story there is a page dedicated to “Fun Facts About Porcupines.” Did you know that a group of porcupines is a prickle? There are other fun facts listed that I didn’t know.
The illustrations are amazing and colorful which will keep the attention of young children. There are also some fun words such as prickly and flim flam jam. This is one of those books I see children reading over and over.
This is such a sweet and a fun way to teach a lesson to little ones! They will learn that what we say and do can hurt. They will learn how to solve problems without getting angry. They will learn what a true sense of community is
Dr. Pete helps his neighbors and friends with their problems. Not only by healing them with magical potions but by listening and by being nice.
When he comes across a problem that he's not sure he can solve (a prickly cacti who's mean to everyone who passes by), he takes to the task with all the understanding and patience he has.... And a hug!
Fun illustrations will delight readers young and old!
Dr. Pete Gives Readers Some Life Lessons to Consider in The Prickly Problem. While Dr. Pete is a great problem solver with his medicinal potions and concoctions--he is a caring friend and neighbor too. When medicine fails to "fix" a neighborhood bully--the good doctor has a different healing plan in mind. Children will learn about loneliness, kindness, empathy, and love as the characters seek to help a neighbor feel (and behave) better.
Cute Characters and Wonderful Illustrations Bring The Prickly Problem to Life. The author and illustrator combine animals and scenes from the desert into a colorful, fun, magical story for children. Every page has something to see and talk about as readers watch Dr. Pete heal his community with more than "magic" medicinal potions.
Would I Recommend The Prickly Problem by Cheryl DaVeiga? The Prickly Problem is a wonderful book for animal lovers and little ones with big hearts! The story is a little longer than some children's books--but it is the perfect length to tell Pete's story and bring smiles to readers. I recommend the book to younger readers learning about emotions and relationships--and the power of a good hug! Parents and caregivers should leave the story with a warm, happy feeling too!
Dr. Pete was no ordinary doctor, he was a fun, caring, friendly, and fun-loving doctor that did all he could to help all his patients. They had some doozy problems too, all very prickly. But he always managed to solve the prickly problem. All the patients relied on Dr. Pete and they were all always in desperate need of his help. The illustrations were beautiful, fun, and very eye-catching. The message of the story was very uplifting and we all loved The Prickly Problem.
My eight-year-old daughters review: I loved this book because Jack had prickly problems that Dr. Pete cured. This book captured my attention through the colorful drawings. I loved everything about the book. This story shared a wonderful message about friendship, caring, and love. I would suggest this book to all my friends and wish our school library had it for everyone to read.
Dr. Pete (the porcupine) is such a caring and empathetic doctor with many friends. All of his friends look to him knowing they will receive loving care.
Dr. Pete wears a coat to take extra care not to poke his patients / friends when they want to hug him after his dedication to making them well again. This is a fun and loving story, which also shares compassion and kindness with an outsider to the group. Empathy, kindness, and friendship are so important in young lives.
The illustrations are so vibrant, sweet, and full color. The character’s sweet faces had me smiling during the whole story. The illustrated pages are as beautiful to look at as the story held within.
*There are also some porcupine facts at the end of the book for those little minds who want to know more.
I received complementary advance reader copy of this book for review purposes. The opinions, in this review, are my own. Thank you for the opportunity to read this wonderful book.

The Prickly Problem is a picture book by Cheryl DaVeiga, and illustrated by Luis Peres. The book introduces us to Dr. Pete the Porcupine. He fixes problems by using all sorts of potions, and is able to help the creatures of the desert. However, they soon come to him, needing help about a cactus that is mean.
I think the initial theme of the book was okay… I liked the idea of this porcupine doctor who uses potions to heal its friends. Though I think later elements of this doctor stuff felt kind of weird. One thing I thought was odd was that the author kept referring to problems as “Prickly”. Considering many of these problems had nothing to do with anything “prickly”, it felt weird that the author kept using the word. I could understand the cactus having a prickly problem. But the problems were things like dry skin and a sore ankle, etc. Nothing to do with prickles…?
Also, once they reach the cactus, the doctor starts giving him all sorts of potions, in an attempt to “fix” him… But it felt kind of off, because the doctor didn’t even ask the cactus what was wrong with him; the cactus didn’t even want to be treated. It felt like one of those societal pressures where a group of people try and forcefully change another person, because this person isn’t the way the group want them to be. The irony is that they’re here, trying to treat this cactus who has been a bully to the others, yet the others are now abusing him; the doctor and his friends were essentially force feeding him all sorts of medicines, without his consent. I feel like the author didn’t fully think through the messaging of the book. And the weirdest thing is that the doctor didn’t even talk to this patient properly, ask the patient what was wrong, or even get consent to treat the patient.
The illustrations were definitely wonderful, and the artist created a lot of great moments for the book. They created some good visuals of the characters, and it was good to see the bright and colourful elements of the book.
Overall, I didn’t enjoy the book. There was such a huge element of hypocrisy in ganging up on the cactus and bullying the bully; forcing him to change his entire personality, because they don’t like him as is. I think the author needed to properly think out the message they were trying to send. I know people will probably say I’m overthinking this, but the message they’re trying to send feels really gross to me. I do not recommend this book. The illustrations were definitely a good aspect of the book, though.
Dr. Pete, the porcupine, was no ordinary doctor. He liked to use his potions to solve prickly problems. Dr. Pete could solve anyone’s problems, which was why everyone came to him. Your rattlesnake won’t rattle? No problem. A stung stinger? No problem.
But there was one problem he couldn’t solve, and that was Cactus Jack, a rude dude and “a hard case to crack.” Can Dr. Peter make the “grouch be gone?”
Watch as Dr. Pete and his friends try everything to help relieve the mean nastiness of the cactus. They tried everything, but nothing was working. But there was one thing they didn’t try that might do the trick.
The solution was so simple.
Story was filled with vibrant, fun, and colorful illustrations that leap off the pages. The characters were so comical and cartoony—I loved it!
Story is a good example of the healing power of the heart. A nice read!
Dr. Pete has a problem. He's able to solve all the ailments of his desert neighbors, but there's one problem he's not sure he can solve - Cactus Jack. He's just so mean! With a little help from his friends, can Dr. Pete solve this final prickly problem?
This is such a sweet little children's book. The illustrations are beautiful, and I loved the fun porcupine facts in the back! The book also features desert animals that may be new for your children (unless you live in the desert yourselves of course!). This was a Biff Bam Booza book that also included QR codes where you can find a singalong to the Dr. Pete/Cactus Jack song. Thank you so much to iReadBookTours and Cheryl DaVeiga for my copy!
The Prickly Problem is an adorable book about how the "simplest thing" can solve a problem. Without giving away the story, Dr. Pete the Porcupine is caring for a number of patients, until one comes along with a different problem and doesn't seem to want help.
I enjoyed the story and think it will be a good read for younger children. My students are a little old to require but I'm not saying I won't share it. It is a good lesson for all.
I was given the opportunity to read this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Illustration are what frist brought us to the book with the bright colours. My son loved Dr. Pete and thinks he's very helpful. He enjoyed the healing of all the animals and how they come to visit him further more throughout this book it widen his voucblaury which as a educator I was very impressed.
This book was so cute! I read it with my just turned 5 year old granddaughter and she loved it. The illustrations were visually engaging and the message was one that kids of every age could appreciate. The book was written in a way that makes it easy for kids to understand and enjoy.
Highly recommend - 5/5 stars.
*** I would like to thank NetGalley, BooksGoSocial, and Cheryl DaVeiga for the opportunity to read and review this book.
*I was given this book as an Arc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
It was a cute story about kindness, patience, understanding, caring and how a hug can solve all our problems. My daughter loved the name of the book and asked to read it right away, it was fun. We love a good repeat phrase, so my daughter can hoping along as well. The book made no sense whatsoever haha but we still had fun!
A cute story about friendship and the power of caring with adorable illustrations of Dr. Pete the Porcupine helping out his friends and neighbors. The bright and lively pictures of desert creatures adds to the fun of this sweet little book.
In this cute story the Doctor is always there for his patients. Dr. Pete I uses his special potions to solve their problems. In the end and encounter with a cactus tells Dr. Pete’s true gift.
Read this delightful book about a porcupine doctor taking care of all his friends and their prickly problems! At the end you can also learn about a porqupette! A favorite book, one of many, of my grandson. The love of reading is a great gift!
