Possess Me at Midnight (The Doomsday Brethren, Book 3) by Shayla Black
Paranormal Romance- October 29th, 2009
5 stars

This book was all I expected and MORE. Shayla Black really delivers the goods in her 3rd installment of the Doomsday Brethren. Although this series is very complex Shayla Black's clear writing catches your attention and keeps it! As soon as I began reading, I easily felt a part of the story. However, since there are an impressive list of characters and more being added in this latest book, new readers might want to read one of the prior books to help orient themselves first.

In this story the smoldering and forbidden passion between Sabelle and Ice is finally realized! And the interaction between the 2 is a sheer adrenaline rush !

Shayla Black does a magnificent job of creating a sympathetic hero with a dark past. Ice is a Deprived male and as such viewed as expendable even as he helps the Doomsday cause. Ice was especially vilified when he went on a killing rampage after his sister was murdered. I really admired Ice. As I came to understand him and sympathize the strong and fierce warrior he has become. Ice is honorable and misunderstood and driven to claim Sabelle even as he tries to protect her from his `tainted' origins. Torn between the overwhelming mating urge that knows she is the only one for him and trying to keep her safe Ice is the perfect tortured hero. Sigh!

Sabelle tries to fight against the deep attraction for Ice because any real connection to him is futile since she is promised to a Privileged male. It was great to read as Sabelle `grew up' and started to think about what she wanted besides her brother's wishes for political gain. She had to take the leap to trust and open herself to Ice. The only frustrating section for me is that Sabelle took so long to `surrender' to Ice. Really, why resist?!

We also find Bram overcome by a debilitating and lethal disease and Shayla Black reveals a dark side to Bram that was disturbing. Lucan is trying to recover from his severed bond with Anka but she keeps reappearing and tempting him. I was also tantalized by glimpses of Shock, the supposed enemy. He plays some key roles that made me wonder which side he really was on. And questions about the real powers of the Doomsday Diary and the murder/terrorizing of Council members are investigated. It is just too much tension. I can't wait until the next book! A whole year?! Please make it sooner!

Full of magic, intrigue and sexual tension this was an exhilarating read from start to finish!

Isdernus Rykard or Ice, might be one of my favorite tortured hero. Some said he's crazy, some said he's insane. Eventually after his sister was abducted by Matthias, the evil wizard, and raped until she died. But who know deep inside he love Sabelle, Bram's sister from long time ago?

Even Bram doesn't want Ice mated with Sabelle, and already plan to pair Sabelle with Lucan who had lost his mate Anka in the previous book,Seduce Me in Shadow, Ice and Sabelle can't denied their feeling toward each other. And hear me, the sex scene between that two are scorcing hot!! But, also emotional. This is why I love Shayla Black's writing. Her idea might be not original, but she can weave word after word that will delivered a book that make her reader satisfied.

Readers can't read Posses Me at Midnight without read its predecessor. So I suggest you to read it first. And prepare to meet a new tortured hero who will make your heart melt, that is Ice Rykard.

Will duty win over desire when the mad bad Ice 'calls' to the empathic magekind 'princess' Sabelle to be his mate? Or will the soul mates have to give up their best chance at a happily ever after to stop the evil wizard who is cutting a swath of death and torture on the road to conquest of their magical race?

I wasn't overwhelmed by the previous two Doomsday Brethren, they were okay but I hadn't actually planned on continuing the series (so many books so little time:) But I am glad I gave the series another chance because of a recommendation by a forum friend, since this is by far the best of the Doomsday Brethren to date. I loved Ice, who still maintains his dangerous intensity even as we find out the truth behind his madness and the reason for his enmity with Brethren leader (and Sabelle's brother) Bram. With the sizzling undercurrent of attraction between Ice and Sabelle brought to the forefront and with so much past and present for the pair to work through Black manages to keep the tension and emotions high between the leading pair. The resolution to their dilemma is a bit telegraphed but still satisfying.

What I was less thrilled about - this is present throughout the series and was one of the reasons I wasn't planning on continuing with the rest of the books - the villain Mathias and his follows are just too evil and the results of the violence they revel in is truly distasteful. Personally I found it excessive and heavy handed. I really didn't need to be bludgeoned by the villain's evil and descriptions of brutally murdered victims as well as mentions of Mathias' penchant for rape/torture knocked down my rating of the book a bit.

From a series point of view Black moves the larger story arc along with power plays and council shake-ups as well as intriguing glimpses of several other of the Doomsday Brethren who are likely slated for books of their own.

I was crying fat tears at some parts, others, my smile was so wide I thought that for sure my lips would crack. My side hurt from laughing at some of the things said, and my heart wept for the characters more than once. I don't want to give away too much about the book, but basically the hero, Ice, and the heroin, Sabelle, get thrown together when the group must split up. Ice of course likes the chance of being alone with a beautiful women, but Sabelle isn't too crazy about getting stuck with her only brother's least favorite person. Especially since that one person can ignite a fire hotter than anyone ever has, and he doesn't have to even touch her to do so. So, leaving out all the details so I don't spoil it too much for you guys, the plot is great, and heart wrenching, the characters seem very real and (unlike some books) you won't get mad at the characters thinking "Why the hell are you doing that? You should be doing this!" Ice was amazing, Shayla Black, I applaud you, you are an amazing writer. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, it was truly wonderful.

WARNING: Keep tissues near by while you read, and get ready for the fire to ignite in you as well.

I can't seem to get enough of this wonderful series! It really gets better with each book and Possess Me at Midnight is my favorite in the series thus far.

I love, love, love Ice and Sabelle. Their love is forbidden due to their conflicting social status and the animosity between Deprived Ice and Sabelle's brother, Bram. As a Privileged, Sabelle is highly valued and considers as a 'prize' in the magic world as she is the granddaughter of the famous Merlin. Bram, is a well respected and ambitious politician. He wanted Sabelle to mate with someone who is part of the Council so he can gain a political advantage. Naturally, Ice who is considered as mad in the magicworld is not what Bran has in mind as a suitable mate for Sabelle. I've always like Bram but he is an utter asshole in this book.

The chemistry between Ice and Sabelle is scorching and the love scenes, albeit not plenty, are super hot! Even though SB did not write a graphic love scenes, the description and the connection between Ice and Sabelle are enough to keep you turning those pages.

I can't wait to read the next book which will be about Duke. I don't know how SB can top this one, or if she could, but I'm looking forward to find out :)

I highly recommend this series to all paranormal romance fans!

So I made it to pg. 2 when a nasty, disgusting bomb was dropped and I couldn't believe what I had read. There is a side male character whose mate was abducted and their bond was broken, and he was grieving and Sabelle had given him "vital energy through sex" while he had been in "mate mourning"... His mate is with someone else and Sabelle had provided him with the "sexual energy needed to keep him alive."

That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever read. This is the worst part about Paranormal Romance; there are some really gross things created. What kind of an idea is that? So this Lucan guy is touching her and she's wondering if he's thinking their friendship has changed now that they've had sex. What utter trash. Why are so many things so f'ed up? I don't do casual, sleeping-around-with-everyone sex and I can't fathom a society with healing sex energy and actual sex with people just to heal them.

It's such a shame because I was so excited to read this and the synopsis sounded so good.

Isdernus Rykard, or Ice, is seen by most as being ruthless and crazy. He was born and raised under the Deprived class of wizards and is looked down upon by those of the Privileged. To want the beautiful Sabelle Rion is foolishness because someone like her, who is considered royalty among magickind, would never be allowed to mate someone like Ice. But the passion and love he feels towards Sabelle cannot be tamed. Granddaughter of the great Merlin, Sabelle knows she is expected to mate to only the best of the Privileged yet her heart and body calls out for Ice. The attraction only gets stronger when they must flee together along with her ill brother from the wicked Mathias. He has attacked the wizard Council and the only way to help save it and her people may be for Sabelle to become the mate of another. Sabelle will need to decided between her duty or her heart.

Sabelle Rion is half siren and all gorgeous but don't let her looks fool you. She is intelligent and knows how to work people in her favor. Ice doesn't just see the pretty face of Sabelle but the strong determined woman within. He hasn't opened himself in over 200 years to anyone until Sabelle and she may have to break his heart and mate with another. This was an emotional read from start to finish. You have these two wonderful characters that want to be together but because of who they were born to, they are not allowed to. Ice is very much the misunderstood tortured hero you'd be heartless not to fall for, who deserves to be loved and Sabelle is a woman with a good head on her shoulders but is seen as an object in a game to gain power. Their journey to be together is both difficult and sweet to read and the ending was worth it all.

Mathias continues to look for the Doomsday Diary which the Brethren have. In their last encounter, Bram Rion was gravely injured and barely escapes death. When he comes to, he is not happy with how close Sabelle and his former friend Ice have gotten. Bram's character really takes a dark turn in this book. He goes from being the sarcastic charming wizard you first meet and love to this cold man who would use is own sister to gain control of the wizard Council. He claims to do it for the greater good but it seriously irked me he would sacrifice his sisters happiness and future to get ahead. He shows some remorse in the end but not enough to get back on my good side.

The battle between Mathias and the Doomsday Brethren continues. Possess Me At Midnight is my favorite Doomsday Brethren book so far. Forbidden love, danger, dark magic, sizzling sexual encounters, sexy alpha men at each others throats. Everything a fan of PNR could want or need.

~Stephanie G

Ice wanted Sabelle since the moment he laid eyes on her. Ice knew it was futile to want for a women, he could never possess. He lower class than she, not to mention that Bran her brother is the one person whom most likely hates ice the most.

Bran’s illness and Lucan’s affections for her since he awoke from his mate mourning is enough to drive her mad but she finds that the most maddening part is the intense forbidden want she feels when she is around Ice. Now that they are on the run from their enemies and have lots of time alone can she stay strong and stay away from the man who will surely break her heart.

I loved this book. I loved ice he's strong super bad ass and sexy. He took on eighty Anarki all by himself and then was tortured and such, but never shown weakness. He is truly a good man wrapped in a bad boy’s facade.

Sabelle is sweet and a bit too nice sometimes. She has this need to make everyone happy, at the expense of her own needs at times. I liked her though.

The whole story was intense from start to finish. Bram was a bit of a jerk and I had a hard time with his attitude towards ice. But the action was intense and I kept me glued to the book just waiting to see what will happen next. Can't wait to see how the next book turns out ..

You know how in every series there's one tortured hero? Well this is it! Let me introduce you to Isdernus Rykard... better known as ICE! He is also considered a mad man by most everyone. He's from a lower class, has been a warrior for centuries, joined the Doomsday Brethren after a personal tragedy and now there's bad blood between him and Bram. Funny thing is, his mate is Bram's sister.

But there are many reasons why being with Sabelle is unattainable to him, not just that her brother would never approve of him in particular because he hates him but also because she's one of Merlin's descendents, he's a Deprived. A mating between them would be frowned upon. When it comes to protecting her and the Doomsday Diary after they are attacked, he can't fight instinct...and he does what comes natural, he Calls to her.

This is definitely my favorite book in the series so far. The main characters were both amazing and they also sacrificed for the greater good. Ice is...well.....in one word, intense. I just want to find my own Ice. His loyalty to the Brethren, to his family, to his people, but most of all to the woman he loves, are unparalleled. Sabelle I felt changed a bit in this book, where I saw her a bit more kick ass in previous books she wasn't as much in this one. But as a couple, the best!

And now here comes the kicker...you know how much I love Bram's character, correct? Well I wanted to kick his arse into the next book! The way he treated Ice and looked down on him, how he turned his back on him centuries ago which is what caused their issues, and even how he wanted to manipulate his sister in this book. Arghhhhhh he has some redeeming to do in my eyes.

You know who doesn't have to do any redeeming? Shock! He's badass, he's good, he's bad, you don't know if you can trust him, and he's sexy as hell.

The whole storyline developed quite a bit in this book as Matthias is now trying to get a seat in the Council and he's going to great lengths to make sure positions "open up". I can't wait to see what happens next.

Fave quotes:

Don't push her anymore, he told himself. Slow. Gentle. Pull back. She's not ready for more.
He told the voice in his head to fuck off.

Ice drew back, then thrust forward again. To the hilt. "I'll take every part of you."
Body and soul.

The best type of love… Forbidden

Sabelle Rion is a talent witch, who has the power to get anyone to think what she’s thinking and is half siren. She’s been using her powers now of lately to help her brother get over whatever is wrong with him. There’s a mysterious dark cloud hovering over him that’s sucking all of his life away and Sabelle has no way to stop it. Not only does she have to deal with that, now that her brother is sick she takes care of all of his daily tasks with the Doomsday brethren and the council. Sabelle feels like she has no one to turn to in her time of need, except there is one, but he’s forbidden.

Ice Rykard is a fierce warrior who will stop at nothing to get to Mathias, there’s only one thing stopping him from leaving and going over there and killing him. Sabelle Rion. Ice has had feeling for her since the first day he met her but he knew nothing would come of it because he is a Deprived and she is not. Once their house is hit by the Anarki , Mathias’ army, they flee together with her unconscious brother Bram to a safe house. Though now they can’t use magic because Mathias had a spell put on the diary making it so that when anyone teleports away with it, it can be tracked.

Now that they are hunted after by the Anarki Sabelle and Ice must work together to keep it safe. Ice vows to keep her safe, no matter what the cost. He even says the mating call to her, though she’s torn between her duty and what she knows is right. Even though she fights what she feels, it tears her up inside. Now her duty is to mate with a man who can change the future and sway the council against Mathias. Though she finds it hard to do such a thing, is there any other way she can get around this?

This is the third book is the Doomsday brethren and like the first two it’s filled with a lot of action. We now she more of what Bram and Lucan is like. Along with what has happened to Anka and Shock. This keeps building to the end, though it keeps it open for the next book. This is a great series that a lot of twist and turns but also romance. Definite four!

What is it about the tortured hero book in a paranormal romance series? Those installments are always my favorites (ie. Dance With The Devil, Lover Awakened.) "Possess Me at Midnight" features the Doomsday Brethren's very own tortured hero, Ice. And as a result, it is the best book in the series yet.

A little backstory: the Doomsday Brethren are a group of British wizards who have banded together to fight a very powerful and evil foe named Matthias. And they are protecting a powerful book called the Doomsday Diary that Matthias wants to use to further his agenda. Ice hates Matthias more than most. 200 years ago, Matthias tortured and killed his little sister. It nearly drove him crazy.

Since joining the Brethren, Ice has fallen for Sabelle. She is the sister of the group's leader, Bram. And she is attracted to Ice too. But there is bad blood between Ice and Bram and she knows it. Bram is badly injured in a fight with Matthias and as the enemy approaches, Ice is tasked to protect the unconscious Bram, Sabelle and the diary. As much as he is in love with her, Ice doesn't think he has a chance with the beautiful witch, nor does he think he deserves her. But over and over, he protects her. He proves his worth. And they fall in love.

The sex scenes are hot and the action is great. The side characters are interesting --and the drama surrounding Lucien, Anka and Shock continues. I can't wait to learn more about where Shock's allegiance truly lies and whether Anka has a future with either man. I guess only time will tell. 4 1/2 stars.

I enjoyed the first two books in the Doomsday Brethren series, but Shayla Black definitely pulled me in with Possess Me at Midnight. This is by far my favorite of the series!!

The book has a great blend of hot romance, action, adventure and a few good twists and turns. The story follows Sabelle and Ice, who we met in the first book, but really come to know and love in this book. Sabelle comes into her own, becoming more than just a siren who can whip up dinner with a wave of the wand. She confronts family and social pressures and becomes a leader within the Council and rapidly changing social order. Ice. Ice will just melt your heart. A complete alpha male with a bit of a tormented past, reveals his passion, intelligence and deeply protective nature.

Beyond the awesome interactions and sexy, hot romance that develops between Sabelle and Ice, I loved that the storyline is intelligent, well developed and still fast paced. I cannot wait to read the next installment and find out what happens with each character and Magickind as a whole.

This was my favorite of the series so far and I think a large part of that is due to the hero, Ice. He is not in the same social class as the other Brethren and he always seems to the odd man out. Even in the last book you could see there was an attraction between Ice and Sabelle. Sabelle is always the good girl always doing what she should, not what she wants to do. This time around is not different, she knows that if she is alone with Ice things will happen and she tries to make sure that it never happens. Unfortunately after a battle she was forced to escape with him and her brother who had been in a spell induced coma for days, leaving her essentially alone with him. The more time they spend together neither can deny the attraction, after giving in they see there were unexpected consequences to their actions. While gathering info to pass on to others in their group, while the war escalates, they fight their feelings along with what the others think of them and past grudges.

You have got to love a book that makes you laugh and cry at the same time. We have Sabelle, the beautiful witch, who has always felt an attraction to the underprivileged bad boy hero (Ice) but could never act on it because of many reasons, two being class and the way her brother Bram felt about Ice.

Ice is not at all what you expect at the start...he is funny, heartfelt, warm, sexy as hell and one fine warrior. Through circumstances they get thrown together and that is where the fun begins. These two characters were made for each other. Their love shines through in every scene they are in together.

There is a lot of action in this book and you get to read about many of the other characters again. Luke is explored in much more detail in relation to Sabelle.

I loved this book. There were definitely tears at the end, albeit happy ones. I would highly recommend this story.

This was my favorite book of the series so far. I love Ice! He is my favorite character so far. Altho I have a huge curiosity about Shock. But who doesn't? This book brought me to tears a few time. Many time I was yelling at Bram about what a jerk he is. Sabelle is awesome. You see the real her in this book. Sabelle and Ice together are amazing! I love that there was more to Ice and that it was explained about his sister . Did I mention how much I love Ice! lol Mathias is so disturbing that when Mrs. Black describes the horror of what the Villain did , many time I was gasping at how descriptive she was (but that also made the book IMO). Love the series and cant wait to read about Duke!

LOVED IT!!!
It was a fast connection for Ice...and they know they can't be together:
an unprivileged wizard & a privileged witch (great granddaughter of Merlin)

Her brother Bram falls ill to a dark magic spell....
Ice protects both Sabelle & her brother while being attacked/chased during magical war

All the while Ice has fallen for Sabelle, a siren witch, and made his feeling known.
Sabelle knows that her brother & wizard expectations would NOT want them together.
Her loyalty is keeping them apart.

LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS STORY!!!!!

POSSESS ME AT MIDNIGHT is the fourth book in Shayla Black’s Doomsday Brethren series which is live today. It is another enticing example of urban fantasy/magical realism, and/or Paranormal Romance, set in the modern United Kingdom where Wizards and Witches are living their lives among humans. The Doomsday Brethren had joined forces to fight the return of their Voldemort equivalent, Mathias Dark and his followers the Anarki. Like Voldemort, he had been all but vanquished many years in the past, but had managed to return. When her home was attacked and destroyed, it was up to Sabelle Rion, with the help of Isdernus Rykard, or Ice, to flee from Mathias and his followers and keep the Doomsday Diary safe. She knew that she also needed to keep Ice at a distance since her brother would not approve. Ice was determined to protect Sabelle at all costs, but he also needed to somehow resist the witch who he tempted him since from the day they met, despite being his enemy’s sister. This new novel in the Doomsday Brethren series continues to live up to the promise the series has shown from the very first book. The action begins within the first few chapters and grabbed me very quickly. This is definitely a series and books need to be read in order to follow the overarching Good vs Evil plot, but each book includes the love story of one of the Doomsday Brethren. In this universe, a wizard recognizes his mate with the first kiss, but a witch does not have the same advantage, and Sabelle spends a lot of time in the story between violent magical attacks and strategy sessions gradually learning to love Ice and agonizing over the conflict between her heart and her brother’s expectations. For Ice it was much simpler and more instantaneous. I enjoyed the progression of their relationship and felt that despite having disparate backgrounds, they fit well together. I was rooting for them. Black is a talented writer, and this book was well written and paced. Her characters’ journeys made sense and were not rushed. Tropes included in this third person, dual POV, open door fantasy romance were forbidden romance, opposites attract, only one bed, forced proximity, upper class witch/lower class wizard, he falls first, good vs evil, preventing apocalypse, and protective warrior MMC. I recommend this series and book for readers who enjoy spicy paranormal/fantasy romance and the tropes listed above.

I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after reading a free ARC of this novel via Booksprout. All opinions expressed are my own.

I generally loath reading a series out of order so I wish I would have been able to start this series with book #1. The story is not incomprehensible without the basic back story (that was likely covered thoroughly in previous books) but I think some scenes would have had a much greater impact if I knew a bit more history. I don't view this as a writing failure on the author's part however. There was enough history to sustain this book and make it compelling on its own. It was the smaller things that likely got lost, like the glances between preceding book couples or understanding of the significance of the Call that probably would have evoked a gut reaction. Even understanding what exactly is at stake in this world and book would have helped things along. Due to my lack of knowledge about the framework of this world in peril, I fear my review will be woefully lacking and will gloss over the story. For that I'm regretful since unavoidably, and by not fault of the author's, often times that missing information is negatively directed at the final rating.

So here's what I know. Warrior wizard Isdernus "Ice" Rykard, 246 years old (I think they have a 1000 yr life span via Shayla's website), member of the Deprived, and considered insane, is also a member of the Doomsday Brethren. The Brethren consists of men with magical heritage, some full wizards and some are human or part human or...well I'm not sure. One is a Duke and another a former marine so I guess that implies human or partly. Anything more detailed I don't know. It seemed like some had power, or limited power and others were very powerful. Ice, for example, carries a wand and can cast spells at will. He's also a relentless physical fighter. I didn't understand the Brethren's genesis other than stopping evil Mathias d'Arc (the villain) from gaining political power however.

Bram Rion, a descendant of Merlin, a wizard, a member of the Privileged, and the Brethren's leader was, 200 years ago, was Ice's best friend. Today they are enemies even though they fight for the Brethren together. The story opens with Bram under a draining spell that has left him unconscious and weakening each day. When the Anarki (Mathias' evil army) attacks Bram's home, the Brethren must flee. Bram's sister, 85 years young witch Sabelle Rion, and kind of like the princess of magickind, is instructed to escape with Bram, Lucan (her 'lover') and Ice as well to protect the Doomsday Diary. The Diary belonged to Morganna le Fay and can only be carried and use by women. If you write your heart's desire in the book it will happen. One human character )heroine from a previous book) used it for sexual fantasies I surmised. Mathias wants this book, likely for other reasons ;) and has put a tracking spell on it. So while these witches and wizards can teleport in this Harry Potter type world, if they do so with the book they are instantly tracked by the evil Anarki Army.

Lucan (hero of book #5) has his own sad story. He is mated to Anka for but she was abducted and abused by Mathias (don't know if it's mentioned briefly or explained in depth in another book). She has broken her mate bond with Lucan and is shacked up with the mysterious and duplicitous Shock. It's hard to know whose side Shock is on but he's a member of the Brethren who comes and goes as he please and also does stuff for Mathias. Okay, back to Anka, which I confess was the saddest and most compelling part of this book. I guess when a mate bond is broken, the male, who gains energy from his lover's touch (but mostly sex) goes into mate mourning. To ease the frenzy of losing Anka, Sabelle has offered her body to Lucan whenever he's in need. I think that males require females to restore their power even if they aren't mated though. How convenient.

We learn along the way that there is a Privileged and Deprived race among magickind. These segregated races are ruled by the Privileged like Sabelle and Bram, and I guess they live in the same realm as humans, in England. Ice is one of the oppressed or Deprived. Again, not very sure about details for this but a potential uprising by the Deprived will play a role in a latter crisis.

Apparently males possess an instinct that tells them when they've found their mate. Ice knows that Sabelle is his so he Calls to her and recites the mate bond. He has essentially pledged his fidelity and protection to Sabelle for eternity. Sabelle can answer his call and pledge likewise or she can Renounce him. Either way, Ice is hers now. She should Renounce Ice, she knows. Bram will demand it. There is no way he'd allow her to mate with his enemy and a Deprived. And he's always had political aspirations for her mating. So even though Sabelle doesn't return his Call she also doesn't Renounce him which makes their complicated attraction and life on the run much more interesting. Ice is a great, tortured hero and Sabelle is a loyal sister who is devoted to magickind. They both have sad secrets to share and it's one of the reasons this book ended up being compelling and emotional.

Some questions I had at the end that might or might not have been addressed in other books: Who is Shock? Who is Zain? What's up with Emma? What happened to Anka? Who is Mathais and what's his problem? What are the Anarki? Who are the Wolvsey twins? Why is there a Privileged and Deprived? Are the old-timey Council members really that stupid?

Some things I didn't like about the book were the brutally graphic scenes after the Anarki finished their slaughter. Also, more than once Mathias boasts of his particular style of rape and though it elicits an emotional response, it was one I could have done without. Ice gets tortured and one point and it's vicious and detailed. Had I known he could potentially be healed quickly I would have had less of a problem with that scene.

Gailene and Anka's story, even if a mystery, are so very tragic. I guess I didn't dislike them really but it's so sad to read about.

The story was also very easy to predict even without knowing the history. There weren't may surprises but I've come to expect that in series where the villain is the same throughout several books. Each time he's cornered, they fight and he gets away. Got it...at least until the last book, right?

In the end though I thought this was an emotional book with a ton of action, suspense, attraction, some steamy sex and a great premise. I'd love to read the whole series but I get my books from local libraries and they only carry #3 and #4. Maybe one day.

Added 03/08/13: YAY! I found the first two books via Interlibrary Loan and have read and reviewed them.

WOW! This story line of this series just went nuclear.

The story explodes into a dangerous and perilous journey for the Doomsday Brethren right from the beginning. The Brethren, under attack by the evil wizard Mathias separate to keep the Doomsday Diary out of his hands. This begins the story of Ice and Sabelle. They are greatly attracted to each other but between personal baggage and loyalty, up until now, they have not acted on that attraction. But with danger hunting them down, they soon find that it is not easy to ignore what the heart wants. Every move they and the Brethren make, Mathias is right behind them. It all comes down to a battle between Ice and Mathias - an epic battle to save magic where the only choices are to forfeit or die. Ice needs Sabelle more than ever now. Will Ice and Sabelle trust that their love for each other will see them thru to the end and give them a happy ever after? Will the Doomsday Brethren live to fight evil again? Will the Doomsday Diary remain protected? Will Sabelle's brother Bram be able to fight the evil Mathias implanted into him? These questions and many more still need to be answered but it will all depend on if Ice can defeat Mathias and secure a seat on the magic council.
This a very fast paced story with a lot of magic, danger and passion in it. I loved this book. It was by far the best of the series so far.

Possess Me at Midnight is a fantastic escape into a world of magic and high-stakes romance. This book is part of the Doomsday Brethren series, and it tells the story of Sabelle, a powerful witch, and Ice, a fiery warrior.

Their attraction is instant and forbidden, as Ice is seen as Sabelle's brother's enemy. While they are on the run from a dark evil and trying to protect the Doomsday Diary, they must also face their intense feelings for each other. The action is constant, and the suspense will keep you turning the pages.

This is a great read for anyone who loves paranormal romance with a forbidden love story. The characters are compelling, the world-building is solid, and the passion between Ice and Sabelle is unforgettable. It's also a good idea to check for trigger warnings, as some descriptions can be quite graphic.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

When evil comes for you, who do you trust to protect you? War is imminent. Sabelle must put her trust and her life in Ice’s hands. She’s a highborn witch and he’s a lowborn warlock. They should never have even met. But now that they’re together, sparks fly between them, while the world around them is under attack.

This is Book 3 of the Doomsday Brethren series. This is one of those series that you really need to read in order. But you won’t be disappointed. I’m loving this series. Every book gets more and more complex, the character development gets so in depth from one book to the next. We keep diving deeper into a world where throwing a spell is normal. And to be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of paranormal romances. But I am a big fan of Shayla Black’s, and this one did not disappoint. I may be a convert yet and delve further into PNRs.

The best so far in the series. I liked Ice from the beginning and he'd only proven not only to be a strong warrior with a distinct code of honor, he was also a knight in shining armor, full of love and passion. Sabelle on the other hand was frustrating, especially with her lecturing about how she can take care of herself and how old she was, while on the other hand she was deferring to her brother for her future.

Maybe women oppression in the magickinds society is part of the plot, however I expected more from Sabelle. Additionally I expected more from Olivia. Ever since her book, she's but a shadow under the excuse that she's not yet transitioned. Surely a witch of the le Fay bloodline could be slightly less decorative, and more front line-ish?

Got this in a romance mystery bag. Not sure why they gave me book 3 of a series. I have a 100 page rule where I give my books till the 100 page mark before passing judgement. I got that far and honestly? The book is kind of cringe. Its all about sexual tension, exploits, trauma and tragedy to some degree.

Maybe its because its book 3 and I've missed some of the lead up till this point. But the fact that . I could probably suffer through the rest, I'm sure it gets better, but for now its a slog through tragedy and indecision.

Hopefully the last couple books from my mystery bag are better!

Ice is not part of the upper echelon so he knows that even though Sabelle is his mate they can never be together. Not only are their social standings different, her brother and his former friend wants a much different match for her and there are also his actions dealing with the loss of his sister that are hard to overcome.

Sabelle is torn between loyalty to her family and the match they would like to arrange for her and the connection she feels for Ice as she knows they would not approve. With her brother incapacitated it is up to her to try and fight against the evil forces that are threatening everything.

Filled with angst, suspense and action Ice and Sabelle take us on an adventure as they fight for their fated love even if there are many forces against them.

Every book in this series is jam packed with so much action. This series isn’t for a the faint of heart because it isn’t all sunshine and roses. Ice has been one of my favorite characters and my heart ached for him. Misunderstood and deemed a crazy he gets a bad wrap. This book made me want to hug him, shake her and maybe punch her brother in the face. But you can’t put it down. Every page brings some new anxiety inducing moment that has you biting your nails, or screaming (in your head mostly ) at the characters to get it together or runnnnnnn. If you love paranormal with some heart wrenching romance this is for you!

Finally! I’ve been waiting for Ice’s book since I first started the series. You could say I have a thing for the misunderstood. There are so many secrets hiding beneath the surface to this one, two centuries worth. The untangling of them while a long slow road was so worth the journey. I loved the one on one time he and Sabelle shared while on the run. We always knew she had mettle but this story made me like her even more, she’s so much more than just the pretty face everyone thinks her to be and Ice is among the first to realize it. Together they are 🔥.
Old enemies, long ago hurts/feuds, new alliances and the whole will she or won’t she kept me one edge.

Possess Me at Midnight is the 4th book in the Doomsday Brethren series and they should be read in order since this one delves right into the fight against evil that's been going on since the beginning. This installment includes the romance between Ice and Sabelle which seems impossible at first but in a twist of circumstances exactly what the brotherhood needs to stay one step ahead of disaster. It's fast-paced, action-filled and angsty with a great HEA for the couple and a newly introduced side character whose story will be next. I received an early copy of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily and honestly.
