Magic Bound: The Haven Chronicles: Book Two

Rate this book
The magic returns.

When Hartley Kegg and Blessing go missing, Steve Haven, the young heir to the Haven Robotics Corporation, once again finds himself plunged back into the chaos of Darkacre.

Teaming up with the darkling, he finds himself on the run from the Council and their enforcers, the Hidden, as he seeks to keep safe those he holds most dear.

Things are complicated further when a new player emerges: the Parity, who are far too keen in the Haven Corporation, and the magical device which nearly led to its destruction.

What follows is a race not only against time but through a series of worlds, each more fantastical and dangerous than the last, as Steve and his friends try to keep one step ahead of their pursuers.

Magic Bound is the second adventure in the Haven Chronicles, following on from Haven Wakes, a unique blend of fantasy and sci-fi which has been described by readers as “shades of Artemis Fowl, hints of Harry Potter… and Skulduggery Pleasant”.

Why?

Now I need the next book to find out what happens next. This Haven series is far too good to just shrug and say who cares. I am getting far too old to be kept in suspense like this I need the next book now and I don't know if it is even published yet. Fi, write quickly.

Magic Bound by Fi Phillips

This book is basically a YA novel, and book 2 in a series. I read book 1 in 2020 and was keen to see how this book would continue the story.

Steve Haven is the main character and is a (very mature) now  13 year old boy, living in the year 2110 where robots are commonplace. His parents often disappear for long periods of time and Steve finds himself in a boarding school he hates, surrounded by bullies - and not just the children! His late Uncle was the CEO of the top robotics firm, and ownership has passed to his (missing) parents.

Steve is once again left for the holidays at his horrible bording school, as his parents are still missing. Steve is delighted to escape back to meet up with the fabulous Hartley Keg, Blessing and the darling.  Once again it is up to Steve to save the day - first against the council and then even more sinister forces. Apart from our old favourites, we are also introduced to the Sanctuary, run by 3 amazing sisters. The adventures that happen there will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This book starts just after book 1 finishes, and I can see that book 3 will start straight after this one. I do think that book 2 was as good as, if not better than book 1, and I can't wait to read the final book - and hopefully find out where Steve's parents are. Again, this book would be perfect for late primary/early secondary school children, but could be enjoyed by children of all ages - even over 50! 😁

The wonderful sequel to Haven Wakes takes us once more into the magical, futuristic world of Steve Haven. This book takes us on a much more action-orientated adventure than the first novel (not that the original lacked this element) and throws Steve further out of the world of the 'workadays' and into the magical realm he has, to an extent, become used to after his previous outing.
This is a fantastic story; it really should be winning awards for YA fiction. Steve is back, alongside the absolutely brilliant Hartley Keg, as well as Blessing (who I have to say has a bit of a rough ride), and the darkling. All the loved characters from the first book, then. But alongside this we have the Council, who really annoyed me with their pomposity, and a new group of villains to contend with; Parity, who have their own nefarious reasons to be poking their noses into Steve's business.
I liked the deeper descriptions of the futuristic workaday world as well as the magical elements. The robots, the glass-walled skyscrapers, the transport systems; all described in wonderful detail, reminding us that Steve's world, even away from magical Darkacre, is very different to our own.
All in all, a triumph. Can't wait for book 3.

Magic Bound continues the story which began in Haven Wakes. Steve Haven and his magical friends are once again brought into an adventure by a mysterious object of magical origin. Steve’s friends are missing, and he is recruited to help locate them. He teams up with the darkling, a magical being.

This series has elements of sci-fi mixed with magic and fantasy. There are magical people in a hidden world unseen by the workadays (non-magical) people. In this book, the Council and a group known as Parity are the antagonists. Steve and his friends visit amazing locations hidden from view, and meet some very interesting characters along the way.

I like the worlds the author has created for this series. The unique locations, portals, and more, are well-done. I enjoy reading about fantastic places with magical beings living in them. There are battles (not bloody or violent though), and adventures aplenty.

You can read this book as a stand-alone, but a lot of the characters that were built up in the first book have their backstories there, so it’s good to read the series in order. I am looking forward to more book in this series. So far, there are only two, but they are good ones. I enjoyed reading both books. They are imaginative tales.

Fi Phillips has done it again! Another easy, entertaining read. The second book has all the familiar characters and many more. Steve is back at school thinking everything is okay. But guess what? It’s not and Soon he is on another adventure this time to save Hartley Keg and Primrose. But who is the evil pulling the strings, and what do they really want. If you want to find out you just have to pick this fast paced, humorous read; aimed at the younger reader, but I’m many years beyond young I have enjoyed both books in the series. With at least one more to come - can’t wait. You can read this as a stand alone but you will probably enjoy it more if you have read Haven Wakes first. Thank you to Burningchairpublishing and NetGalley for letting me read an ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

What a wonderful 2nd book in a series of magic and wondrous creatures with a young mortal boy in the center of the maelstrom. Steve is a normal boy with absent parents dropped into a fight for power over his recently-murdered uncle's company, over magical objects and over the control of the magical community. He and his new-found friends continue the quest for the magical objects that will help them save the magical world and lead him a step closer to finding his parents. The quest continues with one creative adventure after another, involving so many rich new characters. The story flows in such a swift manner that you find yourself reaching the end before you are ready. And the story ends with a feeling of "Oh, nooooo ...." That said, I already cannot wait for the next book in the series. This is a wonderfully imaginative story that is a great read for our youth! Loved it!

In Magic Bound, the adventures of now-teenage Steve Haven continue, this time with more enemies and allies than in the first book, though with fewer mentions of his absent parents.
Young Steve is forced to rescue his friends Hartley and Blessing first from the Council and then from an enigmatic enemy.
Who is the mysterious Auditor and why does he want to get the Reactor? This and other doubts are clarified in this second book, although the big question still remains: Will we ever meet Steve's parents?
I can't wait to read the third part of this story!

The magic continues with this excellent sequel to the unique Haven Wakes. The author has once again woven a tapestry of amazing characters, stunning settings and a gripping story. This is a worthy sequel and I look forward to reading even more in this brilliant series of books.

Magic Bound is the 2nd book in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed book 1, Haven Wakes.

The second book continues the adventures of schoolboy Steve. It begins with the revelation that Hartley and Blessing have disappeared. Initially, I found the storyline a little difficult to follow but it certainly becomes more engaging the further I read with shots fired and an armed grenade!

It is a fun filled fantasy adventure I enjoyed.

There is quite a lot going on in this second book with many new characters/organisations/operatives to get to grips with… the council, the three sisters at the sanctuary, the revenants, the parity, the grayling, the cyclops to name but a few.

I loved the magic of Hartley’s pixie tailor, the omnometer and the squirrel mail! And the robots. The dashes of perfectly placed humour brings further smiles as it did in book 1.

In book 2 young Steve turns 13! Now a teenager!

Note: Little mention is made of Steve’s parents in either book 1 or 2. Even less so in book 2. The emphasis being on Steve’s adventures, new experiences, and new friends.

Recommended for magic, sci fi and fantasy fans whether young or old!

I appreciated the fact that while Steve haven is a young adult, the book doesn't feel like it is aimed solely at that age group. The story is complex and the characters are likable. I definitely recommend reading the first book, there is not enough back story to read this alone.

Our unlikely hero Steve Haven is back with his magical friends having adventures, meeting more characters that Fi Phillips is so good at creating. These books hang around in my head. I opened book 2 and the characters and the world popped out like it had been 5 minutes rather than 3 years.
The author's skill at dealing with this fantastical jigsaw makes excellent reading.
