One Taste

Rate this book
A provocatively explicit account of an unhappily married couple whose passionless union causes them to seek alternative sexual satisfaction in scandalous ways.

Regina Wheeler married her high school sweetheart and has never experienced sexual intimacy with any other man. After many years of being dutifully married to Matt and suffering from short-lived and predictably boring sex, Regina begins to wonder what she's been missing.

Constantly rejected and ignored by an inattentive wife, Matt, on the other hand, starts what he thinks will be a passing fling with a streetwise, much younger woman. But fiery passion unexpectedly ignites, and Matt instantly becomes hopelessly addicted. It turns out that one taste is not enough for him.

Secrets turn disastrous—a marriage might be at risk, but so are lives.

The blurb on the front says "A Fast-Paced Sex Thriller with a lot of Eroticism" but the book did not deliver. It delivered fast pace and sex. There was nothing "thrilling" or "erotic" about it. You can't create eroticism just by using naughty words. That isn't enough anymore and there wasn't enough here to get me engaged.

I didn't like the characters and I don't think I was supposed to. The first thing we see is materialistic Regina and it all goes downhill from there. She isn't sympathetic at all, even though Hobbs tries to build in a backstory of heartbreak around a son who died in an accident. Maybe if we would have gotten the full story about the son up front it might have helped create more of a connection with Regina. Instead, we get the barest hint of her pain, but it seemed contrived without the full story. Her husband is another completely unsympathetic character. Did this man have ANY redeeming qualities? Any at all? He was a cardboard cutout character, there only to give Regina an excuse to do everything she did. Not only does that not work for him, it doesn't work for her either. Why do I feel badly for her when she stayed with someone like that? I don't believe that she did it for love. Why? Because there wasn't anything lovable about him, that's why. There wasn't anything lovable about either of them.

The rest of the characters were equally two dimensional and un-interesting. They showed no depth, no growth, no individualism. So if you have characters like that guess what suffers? That's right, the sex.

To put it bluntly, there was nothing sexy about the sex in this book. It wasn't hot. It wasn't "freaky" (despite the blurb from Zane on the back of the book). It was plain, like checking off the list of words: Pussy? Yep. Dick? Uh huh. Clit? Gotcha. Cum....yep. Great! We hit our quota. If it wasn't plain, it was ridiculous. I mean, did you really say:
Yeah, his dick was husky like a mufucka"
Seriously? And I'm supposed to be aroused by that or laughing my ass off? Because I'm still laughing. Which is too bad because the one redeeming quality of this book was Cochise (aside from his nickname.) He was the only character that straddled the line between two dimensional and fully developed character. He wasn't all the way there, but he came closer than any of the others. He had his own voice and hinted that Hobbs might be a better writer than this book suggests.

But I knew I was in trouble on the first page with
She could eye spy a knockoff with just a glance
She could "eye spy"? Really? That's something a person might say, that doesn't belong in the narration. There is an old adage for writing called "show, don't tell." There is a lot of tell in this book, and not nearly enough show. Would I try another book by her? Probably. There were glimmers of things in this one that gave me hope. But, I'll definitely be checking out from the library instead of forking over my own recession dollars.

My first official read by Allison Hobbs. I saw the reviews of this book and decided to go forward with it since every reader is different.

I am very satisfied with One Taste. The author told the story vividly and gave a sample of how a couple can have two different viewpoints on their reasons for having a boring sex life.

I thought the story was funny at least from Regina's point of view. When Regina said that her husband was "handicap in the bedroom" that just got me ready to laugh throughout the story. Regina struggles through trying to get her husband to seek help for his problem. She pleads for some sort of relief, but her husband refuses to help her, so she has to seek other options....

Matt, Regina's husband, also had some funny moments in this book, but of course often the laugh out loud moments were often at his expense.
Matt was in denial about his "lack of ability" in the bedroom. Instead of seeking help the way that Regina urged him too, he began to seek attention from a young girl that he employed. Although Matt has the same issues with the young girl, he finds that "One Taste" of her gives him the edge he needs to rise again. The young girl is a recovering drug addict, that soon begins to use Matt for what he can do for her "outside of the bedroom".

Overall loved the book...

I don't read erotica normally but I happen to like Hobbs a lot. That and the fact that I wasn't aware this was "erotica" made me get this book. I picked it up for the slim factor because of my reading mood right now and am happy I did.
I think some people, erotica readers in particular, will pick this up and possibly leave unhappy. It's not just erotica. It's a damn good story too. I can't speak on the erotic part too much because I don't read it and therefore don't know much about it. What I do know about is good stories. This is one.
I'll admit to skipping through two of the steamier sex scenes. There is only so much I can read about sex usually and this was the case with One Taste.
The characters, while having their share of faults, were very redeemable for the most part with a few exceptions. I loved the back stories included like the passing of Regina and Matt's son years ago.
I wouldn't stop at recommending this to erotica readers- I would recommend this to anyone, literally anyone, who likes a good story. Not even simply readers who like urban fiction- anyone who likes a good fictional story will most likely enjoy this quick, steamy story!

Eh, where to start...

I am literally forcing myself to finish this book. So far, the book is about a couple stuck in a sexless marriage. The husband has major issues when it comes to "rising to the ocassion" and does not do any foreplay or oral on the wife. However, the wife still sticks by him. What I would like to know is if he was so bad in bed, why did she marry him? And on top of that, after 20 years she's still with him? The book doesn't really give a background story on the husband and wife and I think it may have made the book better if it was included. The husband begins cheating on his wife with an ex crackhead who, from the description in the book, is not even attractive. He does things to his mistress that he has never done to his wife and I was ready to jump in the book and give him the beat down he deserved. A lot of things in the book are so outrageous and unbelievable. This is the first Allison Hobbs book I've read and I hope her other books are nothing like it. Haven't finished the book yet but I'm pretty sure the ending will not be much better.

This book was good to read. I liked it. Allison done her thang. I only read Pandora's Box by Allison a long time ago but, after reading Headbanger by Zane I thought let me read One Taste and see what it is all about.

About Regina that is married to Matt/Mr. Wheeler. She not getting the sex she want from her husband to that he can't get her to a organis and she asked him to see the doctor but, he never went. Instead he thought his wife was the problem so he ended up sleeping with one of his employees Onika that has a drug problem and trying to recover from it.

Mr. Wheeler has so much problems after he started dealing with Onika. She starts treating him like crap.

In the meantime Regina finds other ways to get herself pleased until she find that one to help her the way she wants to be help.

Overall great book and I liked it. Totally have to read her other books.:)

Well actually I give this book 4 1/2 stars cuz I really enjoyed it however I save 5 stars for my favorite books of all time and this was not quite it. Everyone knows the synopsis of the book so I will skip that. This was my 1st book by Allison Hobbs and I have just started another(Pure Paradise), but then switched to Bonafide Gold Digger because that is the 1st part. I want to add that it was a breath of fresh air to read a book that is not jam packed w/ spelling and grammar mistakes. Although I am not the Grammar Police, these types of mistakes happen far too often in this day and age and that distracts me from the story every single time. I <3 <3 <3 Love, Love, Love, Allison Hobbs and I recommend this book to everyone who likes drama & excitement it was a real page turner

I enjoyed reading this book. The character Matt had me laughing at how he was in denial about his sexual problem. The young girl Onika used him to get hooked back on drugs. Her addiction had her straight crazy! LOL I was glad that in the end she found God and changed her life around. It just goes to show you that God is greater than any addiction and he is the one who can help you to give up whatever that has you bound. I was happy that Matt's wife got her groove on and she found someone that she was compatiable with to love and be loved.

I started this book on 9.27.2010 and finished 9.28.2010. This one is about a weak married man who fiddle faddles with a recovering addict at his start of company. Onika supposedly tries to help him feel like more of a man. While his wife stays home pleasing herself. After a world wind of events. The eggs tumble right on Mr. Wheeler in the worst way possible. And Mrs. Wheeler finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel! This is a good read.

It wasn't all that. After a few chapters I was able to predict the rest of the book. If you're interested in sex scenes.. Ha! The sex scenes were so whack. Like, this book would be something a young teen (14, 15) would be interested in reading. There isn't much else to say. It definitely could've been better, a twist could've been added, better sex scenes, etc. but the book was predictable. It took me forever to finish the book due to lack of interest lol.

I actually liked this book, it kinda hit home for me personally. Also the husband was stupid and weak, I was like, so the Va JJ is that good, that your gonna let this ex-addic degrade you like that. That part of the story was to far fetched for me.... but i pretty much like the rest of the story and I would recommend this book to others.

I must admit Regina is better than me cause I would have taken Matt to the carpet for his behavior and stood my ground about our sex life. Matt was just a hot mess and got exactly what he had coming to him. I recommend this book if for no other reason to find out about Cochise (smile).

Okay, I really am not feeling Ms. Allison Hobbs. Her books always depict one of the characters as a weak man or woman aroused by violence from there lover. Not my favorite type of story line and this is the third book I've read that has it, it's getting rather old.

Not only was this book entertaining, but it also points out some facts. There are many women who have found themselves in Regina's situation at some point in their lives. Because of moral standards set up by our society, these women suffer in silence.

Awesome

Great page-turner! All of the characters were easy to relate to and the sex scenes were some of the best written I've run across in a long time. I would highly recommend for romance readers who like the excitement of a thriller.
