"Remember that one day of your idleness kills 12,000 souls ... there is only one thing that may be said in your exoneration-that you do not know the truth. This is possible, The villain does his job so shrewdly that only a few guess the truth. We have told you several times. Is it possible that you believe our murderers more than you believe us?"
This is a heavy read naturally, and given the fact that it's a personal experience of horrific experiences, I can't rate it.
I had to take many breaks while listening to this for mental health reasons, especially with everything going on the world right now. I've watched plenty of documentaries, read plenty of books and memoirs, and even been to exhibits of this time frame, and even still, there was information in here that I didn't know before that sickened me. I'm so glad I listened to this. The narrator was great and conveyed the emotions, more than once putting me to tears. It's amazing that he was not only able to escape, but that he refused to give up the fight to educate the world about what was truly happening in those camps. He is the true definition of a hero.
Stunning, true portrayal that everyone should read so that we don’t repeat the horrendous acts of the Nazi concentration camps and the Jew hatred that fueled the extermination of many millions of Jews.
This was the second time I read this book and I was, again, gripped by the writing style and the details that this brave blessed man was preserved by God to share and who ultimately saved many lives by raising the alarm of what was truly happening in the concentration camps.
May we all remember those who heroically fought and suffered to bring truth to light. Also, I hope and pray we never carry the type of hate that drives humans to commit horrible actions such as we’re committed during our many historical wars especially to innocents of WWII.
I listened to this book. The narrators voice was quite a lot out of my expectations and I felt my mind needed and older man to tell this tale but actually, by the end, the voice suited the image I had built in my head of the man this book was about. I didn’t know, at first, whether I could complete the book because of the voice of the narrator and then as I got through chapters, I didn’t know if I could finish it due to the sheer horror of what these people witnessed and lived through. I did stick with it, I felt I owed it to them, and I’m glad I did because although we know these atrocities happened, hearing it like this makes it real.
Exceptional attention to detail in this book. I felt like I was there. I took many breaks, this was difficult to read. Horrific at times. The SS & Copos are sadistic. Eye opening. The best description of the accounts at Auschwitz I’ve read.
I totally understand the people that doubted the holocaust. This story is absolutely INSANE, the Holocaust was completely unbelievable. The amount of luck he had to get to point of escaping is crazy. Of course he wasn’t all that lucky, otherwise he wouldn’t have gone through any of this, but the fact that he knew the right people at the right time many times is astounding. This is insane.
