He swore he wouldn't be back while his parents lived...
Now, almost thirty years later, AJ is going home.
Ordered to attend his mother's funeral in the rugged northern border of the Empire, AJ is baring old wounds to his new wife, and burying familial feuds.
But the past won't die that easily, and grave secrets will threaten all the survivors and the women they love. Because the Feds are after AJ's unwanted inheritance...
And they're willing to risk a war to get their hands on it.
The Combined Ops series is flat-out incredible sci fi adventure laced with romance. The worldbuilding is fantastic, being set on one planet and giving us glimpses of the universe through the thoughts and experiences of the characters. And what characters they are! Believable, loveable, flawed, often damaged, and capable of bringing a reader to tears, both joyful and sorrowful.
Between continues AJ and Jenna's story with the emphasis on AJ. It's a story of DNA family and found family, of coming home, and of accepting what you have become. The worldbuilding is fascinating, as we're shown another and different part of the Empire. I love Crane, and the glimpse into his abilities and backstory is tantalizing; I wish he could have a happily ever after. Cindri is a great new character, and I'm hoping he gets his own part in this marvelous series. And who could not love Garm?
I highly recommend this series; the books deserve all the rereads. I recommend starting with Going Ballistic.
Well written, suspenseful story heavy with family history and tensions as the Empire - Fed Cold War continues.
Highly recommend!
AJ and Jenna are back as the main characters, some time after A Perfect Day, with Explosions.
Brief appearances by others from the Combined Operations world, including the status of a character from Going Ballistic. A few brief details on my favorite Head of Investigations.
That said, reading the earlier stories is not required to enjoy this one, a story of how both home and people change over time.
But I do recomend the whole series, the characters and world are just that much fun.
Now I'm off to re-read Two Graves and then the whole series.
Alternate universe, SF military spies, cold war style politics, Nordic traditions
This is very much a continuation of book 3, with AJ and Jenna traveling to attend his estranged mother's funeral after thirty years of no contact. More of the dark and dirty black ops encountered in the last book, with airing of the family history thrown in amid some brutal traditions. Grim in places.
I like the story line and the character development. I would recommend it to family and friends and anyone who likes science fiction. I hope the author will write more books in this series. I’ve been reading recreationally for 60 years and this series by this author is very good and deserves 5 stars.
Realistic action and family intrigues with at excellent story line that is a great addition to the series. I look forward to the next book. Excellent deep emotion portrayal of betrayal, traitors, etc.
I don't Always care for what I term hard Sci fi with a soft twist, but this series grabbed me from the first and didn't let go.
Excellent character development, interesting hard science, and deep understanding of the hatreds and politics that humanity will seemingly never overcome.
I don't know why I like these books so much. Sometimes I find the plot lacking information, as if the author has cut off pieces explaining more about a situation a bit abruptly (in this book I missed information about local custom and beliefs), but anyway the books work for me and after finishing I re-read the previous books again to enjoy the world and characters a bit more.
