Oliver Cromwell

Rate this book
A non-partisan biography of Oliver Cromwell is very difficult to come by at the adult level because of the differing interpretation of historians of the period, some of whom elevate the religious issue and others who concentrate on the legislative. The Cromwell interruption to the long march of English kings is, however, one of the facts of history that American students must contend with. Mr. Levine has provided a chronological study of the man and the times which makes clear the forces that resulted in bloodshed and dethronement. The Rump Parliament, the Barebones Parliament and the Humble Petition and Advice, the changes in government are clarified, Cromwell's involvement in the cruelties that attend armed uprisings is confronted without the accusation or the apology encountered in adult biographies which seek to persuade rather than teach. Not exciting, but sound.
