A Kingdom Scarred

Rate this book
For fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and other Fantasy Romance comes a tale filled with twists, turns, and passionate, forbidden desire.

“I was a prisoner in these ruins, captive of a Fae who was as perilously alluring as the lands where I now stood.”

A thousand years ago, the mortal realms of Kalemnar were separated from the land of the Fae by a dark, poisonous mist that takes lives with all the cruelty of the sharpest blade.

Lyrinn Martel has been told all her life that the Fae deserted their lands long ago, leaving them to decay and ruin. Rumors still swirl to this day that the Immortals were malevolent creatures, bent on destroying the realms of humans…and that their departure was a welcome blessing.

But one fateful night, as Lyrinn flees for her life, she discovers a hidden path up the cliff beyond her town that guides her to the Fae realm of Tíria. There, she encounters a Fae so extraordinary and captivating that she finds herself inextricably drawn to him, despite her fear that he plans to send her to her death.

When Lyrinn escapes the Fae lands, she finds herself summoned to the palace of the mortal king. Even as her journey begins, she discovers that the alluring Fae is not done with her—and he has no intention of ever letting her go.

For fans of Fantasy Romance such as A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Kingdom Scarred is the first book in an exciting new Fantasy Series by the author of Recruitment and The Cure.

* This review is basically a dissertation of all my emotional ups and downs while reading this book. There are spoilers present.

Ok, so this book had such a hold on me that my notes app looks more like a dissertation of all my emotional ups and downs in real time while reading this novel. I hate some parts of this story but I adored other parts. She's not perfect but she's mine and that's all that matters now.

The heroine was a piece of work in the most unflattering of ways right up until maybe 80% of the book. She "coincidently" always misplaces her trusty weapon right when she needs it only to be confident that it was just in her hand but it has "disappeared" and is never found again. It happened twice. It annoyed me SO MUCH. I disliked how overall dense, naive, and downright stupid she was towards the King and Prince what's-his-face. Why is she not seeing through the bordering on barely there veneer of the smarmy Prince? WHY? Also the air of "I'm not like other girls" was really off-putting. There's a part in the story where she goes on about how she doesn't like dresses or mens attention and she fights. Like bitch you can fight in a dress and heels. Grow up. At one point she comes off as so desperate for connection that she's completely fine with the whole situation between her and the Prince and him only wanting her as a broodmare. The outlandish conclusions she would come up with and takes as fact were also very off-putting throughout the story. Last 20% or so of the novel you ask? Well, she shined! She was awesome to read about after she rubbed her two neutrons together and used a little bit of logic. The contrast is stark between 80% her and the last 20% her.

I both loved and disliked Mithron too. Granted he won me over because of the contrast to the heroine's denseness. After the initial meeting, he was actually pretty ok and some may say overall nice to the heroine. He went out of his way to help her only to get told off for no valid reason. Though there were some weird situations where he would gaslight her about something that had just clearly happened in order to try and keep who she really was under wraps so he could figure it out and then tell her. I nearly had a conniption when it was unveiled that Mithron HAS WINGS. He could do no wrong after that revelation. I was in it for the long haul after that. Though by the end of the novel I have a note stating "Love Mithron but could he be a little more direct and a lot less ominous and foreboding about the heroine's future". 1 AM me really put things into perspective 😂 The way the author explained away her dislike of Mithron and her being enamored with the Prince though was weird and lowkey lazy writing in my humblest of opinions.

The Prince can rot in a ditch somewhere. WTF is wrong with that guy?! He's smarmy, domineering, arrogant, condescending, POS, and only interested in the powerful children the heroine can provide. It's later revealed why everyone loves him but COME ON! I had such a hard time dealing with him. He better be dead in the next book is all I'm saying.

I would really have appreciated more world-building and even info dumps at one point because feeling like the dumbest person in the room for 80%+ of the story got old really quickly. It was weird too because the heroine has clearly been raised in this place and yet knew almost nothing about what was going on ever. She also didn't ask the important questions to Mithron when she had the chance. There was a point when I had 3 and a half hours left in the book and there was still no information to be had! It was fraustraiting in a bad way.

The ending was wild! It was probably the best part of the book. Things connected in fantastic ways! The action was on point! The cliffhanger was not fun but made for a fantastic end to this adventure. I'll be waiting for the audiobook for Book #2 to release but boy oh boy am I hyped!

This was quite a good book! I don't know why I don't hear about it more.
A story with Fae and mortals, magic, hidden identities, mysteries and Hunger Games style trials.
The love interest was a swoony powerful fae in a enemies-to-lovers dynamic with the female main character, going feral when she is threatened, even though they hate each other.
There were a lot of little elements here and there that made the story refreshing and unique: the character of her father who was just great; her being a capable woman, able to defend herself and not naive and meek; the complexity of the small mysteries to uncover; etc.

I saw many of the twists and reveals coming, but I quite enjoyed the ride. Although the FMC sometimes got on my nerve when she chose to trust one character without questionning anything. I also would have wanted to feel more connected to the characters and for there to be more emotions to feel, but this is a very subjective opinion and personnal preference.
There is still a lot to discover and I think I'm going to go foward with the next book.

*The story is written in first person and it is single POV.

I have read about 80% of all K.A Rileys dystopian books so to see her move over to my other favorite genre FANTASY AND FAE was literally a dream come true. And she did NOT let down.

The world building took up a lot of the book but I did not find it slow. I found it to be very well fleshed out and even though they kept hinting and hinting at the MC being special and I had an inkling of what it was the execution of the reveal was still amazing. There is also some spice which surprised me as it was definitely a slow burn then when it happened I was like OH DAMN.

There was honestly a point in the book where I was like are the Fae mind bending people or is the prince really the bad guy. I kept flip flopping because the characters were all soo charming.

This was like Hunger Games meets Elise Kovas Dance with a Fae Prince. Which are both amazing books. So if you like those I highly reccommend!

this was an epic flop.

it started off okay but things quickly went downhill from there. the mc is a special girl because, why not? in the first few chapters she becomes the first human in a thousand years to cross over to where the fae live for mysterious reasons that nobody understands. the fae find her and are like 'who is this special human' yada yada, you all know drill. she does nothing interesting and has no merits or redeeming personality traits. all that she's got going for her is that she's mysteriously got powers that she doesn't understand and she's oh so special. very compelling.

instalove galore. within an hour of being kidnapped by a random fae, the main character is given a bath and gets up fully nude to look out the window. her kidnapper is there. she stands there staring at him while he stares back. ummmm... what the actual fuck??

anyways, this was beyond ridiculous and i can't go on any longer.

I really wanted to like this book - the premise was exciting - fae, fighting, trials, romance - and right up my alley!
But the story was disjointed and hard to believe and I spent a lot of time rolling my eyes.

**SPOILERS**

The female MC, Lyrinn, was the hardest to be patient with. I rolled my eyes so much at her inner monologues - "I'm not pretty" while men keep wanting her attention; "I keep to the shadows" while literally never keeping to the shadows.

There was no relationship building between Lyrinn and Mithraan. He's an arsehole to her, and she's all hot for him immediately. For no reason other than he's gorgeous. Men can be beautiful without the female MC feeling "heat low in her core", ffs. Especially if he treats her like shit. He has "theories" about Lyrinn's heritage, but like any chauvinist worth his salt, he keeps it from her. For no real reason, other than some vague kind of "if I utter my theories, some baddie might hear and then we'll all be in the shit."

Then, all of a sudden, they're in love? Nope - not buying it. But seriously - parts of Lyrinn's true nature are revealed and Mithraan's all like, "oh, that's why I think you're hot - that's okay then!" And then they're dtf. For real. It makes zero sense with the story we're given up to this point. And then Mithraan waxes lyrical about how hard he has desired her. It's godawful.

The fact that Lyrinn's father lies to her for her entire life about things that are Really Important, under the guise of protecting her, is just pathetic and unbelievable for this father who apparentlyloves his daughters a lot. No parent would do that. Especially when, at his end, he says "I knew this would come". But didn't prepare her or her sister at all.

Some things in this story are so contrived. The main one being when Lyrinn's father and sister LEAVE HER IN A QUESTIONABLE TAVERN alone with a bunch of stinky, predator men - one of whom has literally just had a go at her (sexually, I mean), and Pop's is all - it's cool, you know how to wield a blade. She doesn't. At least not from what the rest of the story shows. What a shit dad.

Then there's the sister, Leta, who is conveniently kidnapped for the whole middle section of the book and we don't have to think about her again. She magically appears towards the end - Mithraan hints at a conspiracy, but it's never followed up. Leta just appears, and everyone is fine with it (except Mithraan, obviously). She isn't even worried her sister might die and she'll never see her again. I'm guessing she'll end up marrying Prince Corym - but I'm not reading the second book to find out.

Worst of all, Lyrinn is thick. I assumed she was meant to be intelligent and interesting, but she's bullheaded and dull. She asks stupid questions and makes stupid assumptions based on the lies she was fed by her family and society - even though she says herself she doesn't want to believe them - instead of thinking for herself when confronted with an alternate truth. It makes me sad when authors dumb these women down for the sake of "tension" and the whole "how could i like him, he's eViL?" Try harder, please. And if you can't, maybe don't write in first person?

A final note - who the hell is Sadia? I'll tell you: she's mentioned twice on the same page, at the end of the book. Apparently, she's the very important lover of our MCs very important only female friend, Elana. Except, clearly not that important, right? I thought maybe I'd just forgotten she'd been mentioned, but no - I did a search. Twice. On the one page. In a very transparent attempt to show our MC cares about someone other than herself, who has a different sexual preference. Weak.

It was good. Some of the dialog felt inconsistent with what was happening and often confused me, but the plot was certainly interesting.

Hopefully, Lyrinn gives her "father" hell for everything he put her mother through. That was hard to read. 🤮

In this novel, the author attempts to create a captivating enemies-to-lovers dynamic by incorporating sexual tension between the main characters. However, the male protagonist's actions often come across as excessively cruel, which detracts from the overall enjoyment of the story. The use of magic to create a sense of desperation in the female lead, only for the male lead to dismiss her, creates an irritating push and pull dynamic.

The power imbalance between the characters, with the male lead dominating the relationship while the female lead remains helpless, makes this particular enemies-to-lovers story less enjoyable and believable.

Overall the constant hot/cold just annoyed me enough to put it down at 35%, Chapter 18.

This is a wonderful book. The writing is just amazing! You really are able to connect with Lyrinn and understand her feelings and emotions. She embark on a journey where you can just wish to know what happens next.

This story has vibe of hunger games mix with fairies! There are so much twists, it never gets boring.

I love/hate the fact that some characters know things they don't share. It is frustrating, but makes it real and the same time since strangers don't tend to say everything to the first one comming!

DNF- Honestly I really liked some of K. A. Riley's other series. They were creative and original. This book was awful. Fae are supposed to be a sort of powerful warrior breed. However, the only characteristic this book gave them was ✨horny✨. Seriously I had to stop this book because it was so unrealistically sexual. The plot was there, but it seemed like this book was just written for people to read fae porn?? Booooo. Riley is too talented for that. Or so I thought

Too Predictable

I am a big fan of this author but this books storyline was just so obvious. I found nothing original and almost didn't finish it. I was pretty much bored with most of it. I don't believe I will continue on with the series but will definitely not be writing this author off.

… no. Started out good but I was just so bored and the MC’s personality started out strong/independent, but all of a sudden she needed everyone’s help, was getting hurt. Even though 3 different people tried to clue her in on what was going on, she was too dumb to figure it out, and then was so 😱😱 shocked when the “truth” came out. Girl you’re supposed to be smart. I mean come on. I guessed the entire plot. Not how you want to read a book.

1 star for the absolutely stunning cover and 1 star for the last 10% of the book. Other than that, this book was not good. There was a lot of building to the world that unfortunately didn't work. And it's so hard to read a book this long with EXTREMELY unlikable characters. I can usually put logic aside and enjoy the world I'm being immersed in, but I couldn't with this book. Lyrinn is meant to be a strong, intelligent, and wise FMC. She was as far from that as you can get. She was always conveniently losing her blade. She made assumptions and took them as fact. And was not at all suspicious of the Prince. In her mind, he's pretty, so he's good. No surprise there because she does the same with Mithraan. He also annoyed the ever living crap out of me! He would hint at her lineage and then go in a new direction. And when she would ask questions, he would ignore her and pretend nothing was going on. The prince also was just ugh!!!! Of course, he was meant to be like that, but still. Also, her own father annoyed the hell out of me. At his end, he goes, "I know this day would come." Yet did absolutely nothing to prepare her for her destiny. Very sloppily put together and just don't care enough to finish the series. Beautiful cover, though!!!

First I need to bring attention to that cover. The cover alone would make me want to read it. Absolutely stunning.

I fell so hard and fast into this world where nothing is as it seems. There are hidden secrets, broken trust, devious plots and so much more.

This author built a world that you can wholly visualize as her words are so detailed you instantly get a vision of what this place looks like.

The characters are fully developed and you're not left trying to build them up in your mind.
Not only were the two MC's fully developed but also the secondary characters.

Mithraan and Lyrinn were a force to be reckoned with even when they were at odds with one another. I cannot wait to see what they are capable of when the author reveals all the secrets and the truth of all that has happened and what is to come.

This book falls quite easily into my top reads of the year. Now gimme book 2!!

Wow! You must read this book! I have read other books by this author which were amazing...this one is utterly fantastic!!! I literally just stayed up ALL night to finish it because I couldn't put it down.

This story about the fae was unique with the character development taking twists and turns I didn't expect. The main characters were not only strong but charismatic too. I enjoyed the fact that the supporting characters were also described in detail as well (i.e. the Taker even). I even found myself cheering them on!

The world building has been exceptional in all of Riley's books and this one is no different. Scenes and areas of land are described in such detail, you can literally picture it like you are right there.

This is going to be a fantastic series!

I don't usually read this genre but I have to say this book was definitely an exception. I was lucky enough to be an arc reader. I found the book easy to read. It wasn't full of long winded histories or back stories. It quickly immersed you in the world and pulls you in. Some of the indecisiveness of the main chatacter can be annoying however it plays to her personality in such circumstances as she finds herself in. I look forward to the next book. I had to flip back and forth to be sure that it was realy over and i hadn't skipped the ending as it seemed abrupt and very cliffhanger like. The world and story laid out before us is one that holds much yet to be seen, and I am anticipating the next installment to go along for the journey.

Worth 3.5 stars.

So this was a mix of Hunger games and maze runner, but with the Fae and magical gifts. Lyrinn your female MC somehow makes it to the Fae lands through a mist that is suppose to keep out mortals. This is where we meet the male MC Mithraan. The world building is decent sometimes it was overwhelming. Lyrinn was young and you could tell as she was incredibly naive. The inner dialogue from her was almost too much, so much indecision. Then in a moment she realizes the truth and then the romance really happens. So Lyrinn has power but doesn't know how to use it and never seems to learn throughout the whole book. I thought she was going to be this strong heroine, but she just fell flat for me. Story seems interesting enough I might continue, but not sure.

As a lucky recipient, I was provided this book as an ARC. I was excited to jump in after it being hinted that it had ACOTAR vibes. After a bit of a slow start, I began to see exactly why these vibes were mentioned. This book gave me all the feels and then…… ended on a soft cliff hanger!
This book not only gave me ACOTAR vibes, I also felt a bit of Hunger Games and some Howls Moving Castle vibes as well. 3 of my favorite things. This read, even with such strong vibes, lead me into a world of its own! The story followed the MC into a twistful coming of age sequence and visions of her powerful future to be! I absolutely can’t wait to continue this series with book 2!!

I was blessed with an ARC copy of this book and what can I say?

What a book to throw and hug! I read this book as slow as I possibly could, which was torture. I wanted to devour it in one sitting.

For those That are a fan of the show "FRIENDS" this is the episode where Monica is screaming SEVEN SEVEN SEVEN!!!

This is by far my favorite book of KA Riley, and I will be purchasing a hard copy for me and for our school library!

Some twists and turns you can see coming, others just knock you off your feet.

The last few chapters made me mad when I knew the book was coming to an end.

WE NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!! SOON!!!!!! I need to know what happens next!!!!!!

Enemies to lovers, fantasy, romance, twists & turns, spice, what is not to love about this book? I couldn’t put it down. It was absolutely phenomenal. I see many comparing it to big hit series’s but for me this stood out far far above the rest. The story line, the writing, the characters, they’re all an entirely new level and I am obsessed. I attempted to guess what was next so many times but I wasn’t able to figure out all of the incredible twists. So many pages led to “I have to know what’s next” moments and I’d read for chapters more. I truly loved this book and can not wait for everyone to read it. I highly, highly recommend!

This book had me on the edge of my seat! I received an advanced copy of this book. I don't often find a fantasy I enjoy, but this author never disappoints. There were so many twists and turns. The detail and emotion written into this book was amazing. I felt like I was living this story. I felt every emotion, the love and hate, the heart break, the triumphs. I was right next to Lyrinn as she discovered who she really was.
I can't wait to see what happens next.

This book is a must read, I couldn’t put it down. The book hints at the MC being something special but it’s a twist I didn’t see coming. The world building is at a good pace. I fell for one character but really started second guessing myself as to his true motives. This book keeps you drawn to the characters and makes you wanting to know more, which makes it harder to put down.

I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book but hands down I will be purchasing a physical copy as well. The main characters are loveable and flawed, the world is beautifully fleshed out and there are questions that draw you through the book until you finally find the answers. I can’t wait for the next book to come out because I have to know what happens to Lyrinn next!

Cool story, cliff hanger ending leading to book 2

This one has lots of adventure, danger, deceit, magic and romance. The blood trials got tedious and seemed long, and considering the ending, I wondered why there wasn’t more support for the good Fae in his last battle. Look forward to the next story!
