Mara loved this book. She’s definitely the target audience at age 4/5. I, however, found it absolutely ridiculous. My 8-year-old and I had many moments of making eye contact and giggling at the sheer absurdity of a dog shape shifting into a frisbee, or a wad of gum and dog-created wind making a ball hog suddenly pass. It felt like a novelization of a tv episode.
Love Puppies is a series of books about magical Love Puppies.
There are four of them - Barkley - a dachshund. Rosie is a Golden Retriever. Clyde is a Shar-Pei. Noodles is a Labra-doodle. Each one of them has a magical talent.
They all live at Love Puppy Headquarters - which is a magical residence. When they want - all they have to do is state what food they want to eat and it magically appears.
Whenever there is a mission - a Crystal Bone flashes and vibrates.
Their mission this time is to help a young girl named Elianna - who is a basketball player at her school - but who does not have a great personality.
This is another book I read with my son, and he really enjoys this series, as the magical puppies come to the human world and help children through everyday challenges. In this story, the focus is on a third-grade girl who is trying to make the basketball team. While she has strong technical skills, her attitude toward the game and her teammates becomes a barrier. I appreciated that the story didn't just focus on ability, but also on character and teamwork.
The overall message was a great one for young readers: be open to help from others, play fairly, and recognize success isn't something you have to achieve entirely on your own.
This is a cute story with likable characters. It teaches the importance of teamwork and getting along with others. A good lesson for kids. I read it to my daughter and she loved it! She wants me to read the series now.
