Nuke’s new Crew has no idea what he is, or the level of destruction he can cause. He’s here for his own reasons, pledging fealty to a group of half-crazed, dominant shifters in hopes of gaining control of his life. But when a mousey, submissive human knocks on his door during move-in day, he starts to second guess his destiny. She doesn’t belong around a monster like him, but she has moments of strength, and a pile of secrets that have his inner animal a little too interested. The more he finds out about her, the more he wants to protect her, but she’s here on a mission of her own, and that mission could expose the entire Crew. He’s already been to war once with them, but this feels bigger. If Trina doesn’t stop tugging at his instincts, the whole world could burn.
Trina Hogue needs help. She’s stopped right in the middle of the Battleborn Crew to visit an old friend named Ren. But when she finds Ren, she’s surrounded by a small army of misfit shifters who are having trouble containing their inner animals. Her submissive personality won’t get her very far in this trailer park of beasts, so she has to adapt or perish if she wants Ren’s help. One night at the trailer park, and it’s clear she’s stumbled onto an ancient shifter who poses a threat to the world as she knows it. She should be terrified of Nuke, but with each passing minute, she starts to think he isn’t a monster at all. Maybe everyone else is.
Haunted by a past that will put the entire Battleborn Crew in danger before they’re even established, Trina must figure out whether to stay and lose herself, or leave and lose everything else.

With this book it's fun to see the new crew members settle in. Nuke is a huge question mark, you know everyone wants to know more, but is a bit afraid to ask. I was a bit surprised by how much he got along with Trina and how much they had in common, especially their animals. I knew what Trina was doing would come out and it would be bad, but didn't expect it to be so bad. I was glad that Nuke and everyone else realized Trina wasn't doing what she did for fun, but was forced into it and they went to save the day. Things got a bit crazy then, but the bad people got exactly what the deserved and so did the rest of the good guys.
This book made me cry. And cry again. And once more just because Nuke was so damned GOOD.
Why is every book better than the one before?
T.S. Joyce deserves a medal, or an award, or a crown. Yes, a crown! Queen of the best damned shifter world in existence. Yeah, I'm fangirling. Deal with it. 5 NUKE Crew stars.
This is by far, my favorite Oath of Bane story (of course...i think that about each one... they just keep getting better!) I absolutely love Nuke’s story and am so so happy that Trina is part of it. My life feels a little more complete knowing each of them. And who would’ve thought that I’d grow to be fond of Amos? Cant wait for what’s next!!
I "one click" her books whenever they are released. Her books are filled with so much sass and fun that it's a pleasure reading them. They thrill and entertain you. Hits you straight in the feels. But instead of feeling drained you feel invigorated and most of all hopeful. A quick easy read for all lovers of shifter books and happy endings. Trailer park romance that is swoonworthy. Highly recommended series
Another Soul Cracking Addition to a Saga I Hope Never Ends...
I said it in my last review and it needs saying here again, T.S. Joyce’s “The Oath of Bane” series has become my favorite shifter series of 2021. Each book has been better than the last and this one, Joyce's sixth installment of the series is another stunningly soul wrenching reason why this series is in my opinion, the best shifter series ever written!
With "How It Was”, Joyce once again allows us further into Krome's new crew, and the new reality he is trying to build with it. We are also gifted with a more in depth understanding of Trina and Nuke, and a tale steeped so deeply in secrecy and pain, your heart will take days to recover from every written word. As here, Joyce thrusts you deeper into the darknend realm of Nuke, the mysterious shifter. A man desperate to hide his true nature in order to protect everyone around him but also exuding an aura so powerful, so forboding, he is recognized for what he is and spoken about in whispered tones by those all around him. And Trina, a seemingly meek and submissive human, but a being who is anything but. A woman desperate to keep her own secrets from everyone around her, to keep away from them not only what she actually is, but also the true reason she initially appears to Ren and the rest of the crew.
However, when her and Nuke collide after a dangerous encounter makes her realize she is the only one able to stop him from unleashing his darkness, it unveils knowledge that explodes everything around them and puts them both on a path neither could have foreseen. And what follows is a poignant, captivating tale of devastating pain, loss, trust, love, and second chances.
This one is honestly the most emotional one yet. It will leave you feeling as though you've run an emotional marathon as it thrashes you back and forth between fear, anger, and an angst filled hope so sharp with anticipation you will walk away bleeding. You will absolutely scream a war cry for these two and be left on the very edge of your seat as their story unfolds.
Nuke and Trina's installment brilliantly peels away yet another layer of this extraordinary story world giving you another taste of the life Krome, Bron, the Bane's, their mates, and now Krome's crew are all trying to build. It is absolutely unputdownable!
As I have stated in all of my other reviews for this series, never before have I been so thoroughly entranced by a shifter saga. It is a gorgeous story world. With an equally bewitching level of character development and emotional depth. And I simply cannot get enough of it!
Again with the green eyes! I swear, there are more colors out there. 3.5 stars
Our Heroine was there to betray the Crew but honestly, she gave WAY too many clues that Nuke just didn't pick up (in all his smolderyness). Clues all over the place (at least from my perspective). I like the community they are building and Manning just had to go. And it seems he did, as a to go snack :)
And I found myself wondering why a flying horse would eat steaks- aren't they more a vegetarian type?
Anyway, this may be the final one in this series for me. I really like the funny ones so when they get more serious and dramatic, I look elsewhere. I like the unique shifter take in this series.
Great into to the H who has such a sad family history. Loved the upbeat h who is also hiding terrible family secrets. This is quite an adventure that links to other books /couples. Loved insights to other stories.
I love this Author when she dives into her series. I love, more than anything, when she writes books and metions previous characters. It reminds me of when I read about that character, and how hard I fell in love with each of them. I'm going to compair this series with her series "Damon's Mountains" Because , well, one Damon's Mointains, and Harper's Mountains, are my all time fav to read. But this one? Oh, I'm having a hard time picking a fav. Thank you T.S. Joyce! I can not wait for the next one!
The sense of déjà vu is strong in this one. Honestly, no offense to this wonderful, wonderful writer but I feel like I’ve been here with her before. And when I was, it was done better. Or maybe I just enjoyed it more the other ways this story was told . Coz,let’s be honest a woman trying to escape an abusive relationship is so been there done that in romance book 📖 circles ,it up there with evil 😈 twins and baby swaps in soaps It can be a very tired 😴 trope but exciting and interesting if done right . Foe me this was was exactly tired, and I was expecting it to be exciting, I was hoping for it to be interesting at least . Sadly no. Not for me . Ms. Joyce rarely gives us a deep dive into her characters ,usually just enough to make them feel real to us,just enough fleshing out to give us something to hold on to. To hopefully connect with. Never too much ,sometimes too little, often a bit spare on depth and details . Mainly focused on the here and now ,leaving you to guess the rest. Focus on now, not how we’re got here. Not on how the hot dogs are made. And sometimes it works fine, just fine. Makes me think of the “Tom and Jerry” cartoons I watched as a kid. Your so focused on Tom chasing Jerry you didn’t know how sparsely the backgrounds were drawn. Sometimes I’ve gone back to see the older ones from like the 50’s had just squiggly limes to indicate things like trees or houses . ( I’m sure it wasn’t the only one that did that ) Not sure what it was like that. Time. Money. Doesn’t matter to me. My thoughts are that maybe you were supposed to me so focused on the action that the background didn’t or wouldn’t matter. I say this because I feel like that happens in stories at times . We’re supposed to be so focused on the “action” at the center of the story we ignore or don’t pay attention to all the different parts that play into the action going on before us. And while I was “ok” with not getting more depth from/on “Nuke” ( like say where that name/nickname came from ), I wasn’t with Trina. Nuke felt more open. What we saw was what we got for the most part. He just was. Trina felt dishonest,I think. And I don’t mean in the whole “forced to spy” thing . Trina felt ( bs submissive stuff or not ) being submissive doesn’t mean your weak or a doormat or can’t stand up for yourself a or just let others abuse you). Trina felt like someone too smart ,too intelligent to have fell for all the obvious lies she’d been told . She had too powerful animal to have just sat and not tried to save herself or her sister before now. Trina felt fake. Trina saw as a kid her father could cruel and dishonest. His promises were worthless . That no matter what she and her sister were just pawns to be used. She never felt helpless. Not really . She had power she just never chose to use. Like Nuke. True. But his choice was to save others. Hers was to hide hers and be a victim. She chose wrong. She felt fake . But that’s just how it hit for me . Wouldn’t recommend, but not bad,not great. Thanks 💕💞
When Krome (HOW IT IS) and Bron (HOW IT WILL BE) decided to rebuilt their Murder Crew with the help of the Bane brothers. None of them expected to find some amazing, loyal and intriguing people wanting to pledge to their crew of misfits.
Both of them was totally impressed by one man, he showed them from the get go how loyal and protective he was. Nuke was a rare shifter, he was always looking out for the King, his Second-in-command and their mates. He'd loved once and when it fell apart he decided to never put himself out there like that again.
He never expected to fall until one day a beautiful, a shy woman knocked on his door looking for one of his crewmates. There was something about her that pulled at his and his inner animal's protective instincts. She was filled of secrets and he wanted to know her and them.
Trina needed help, she came to visit her friend Ren (Bron's mate). But what she found when she reached there was her friend surrounded by some misfits shifters who had some trouble controlling their inner animals. There was one man in particular that caught her eyes, he was an ancient shifter. One that could bring destruction to the world.
But the more she came to know about Nuke the more she realized that there was more to him and his new crew than beneath the eyes. She had a secret and if the crew found out what it was, they would never forgive her especially Ren and Nuke.
The latter thought she was human but it turned out that she was something more. OMG I loved all the twists and turns. I also loved how Trina decided to do the right thing even though she knew what the consequences would be.
She followed her heart and it paid off. She found a new sanctuary for her and her sister but she also found love, friendship and happiness. Trina found her person (Nuke) and vice versa.
HOW IT WAS is the sixth novella in T. S. Joyce's OATH OF BANE series. What an exhilarating, fun, adventurous and fascinating ride. T. S. Joyce once again did a remarkable job! 5🌟🌟🌟🌟
How It Was is the exact book I needed today; a quick read that pulls you in right away, with witty banter and a touch of feels.
Trina has appeared in previous books, and I had always hoped she would get her own happily ever after.
Trina was incredibly sweet. Even while having to do something that was against who she was at her core, she stayed true to who she was. She would have sold her soul to the Devil if it meant keeping her sister safe.
She was submissive and quiet, but she also had a quick wit that made me chuckle a few times. I loved all the different sides of her, but none more so than the strength she built in just a short amount of time. She embraced every part of herself and she blossomed.
Nuke had been through a horrible situation, which led him to a lifetime of protecting others but always keeping himself at a distance. He wasn’t willing to allow anyone to worm their way into his heart. He was a fierce protector, and that’s how he planned to live, until he met Trina.
Nuka and Trina had instant chemistry, and it grew in intensity with every moment they shared. They understood one another’s deepest innermost emotions without ever having to say them out loud. He offered her safety, and she offered him and his monster peace.
As always with Joyce’s characters, they added all sorts of ridiculously entertaining antics. I’m looking forward to reading their stories.
How It Was is the perfect quick read. An all-consuming blend of searing chemistry, teeming with witty banter and steam, and laced with heartwarming feels that made a few tears leak.
If you've never read a book by TS Joyce you don't know what you are missing. Such good stories with characters who win your heart every time. Nuke fights daily to control his inner animal because it's destructive and lethal. And then Trina shows up at the trailer park where Krome is putting a new crew together. She and Ren are from the same murder and Ren thinks Trina has finally gotten away from Manning's cruelty. She hates that she's been sent there to spy on everyone but Manning is holding her sister captive and has promised to kill her if Trina doesn't do what she's told. But then Nuke and Trina start to hang out and are rapidly falling in love. She vows to go back and find a way to rescue her sister even if it kills her. Nuke learns of her betrayal but then Ren convinces him that Trina was not given a choice. The whole crew goes to rescue her and that's when Nuke's dragon takes over and starts incinerating everything and anyone. Only Tina's Pegasus can get through to him and is able to stop him. An awesome story with a happy ever after you will want to read.
Is there really ever a reason to give a book written by this author anything less than 5 stars? I think NOT!!! I WISH I COULD GIVE IT A PERFECT 10 STARS!!!! I have loved this series from Book 1. The Banes were awesome. Then came the crows. I love how she chooses unusual animals for her hero and heroines' other halves. There is NEVER a boring or dull moment from start to finish in ANY book written by this extremely imaginative and crazy talented writer!!!! Bulls, bears, crows, alligators, wolves, dragons, you name it, and they've all got a beautiful heartfelt story floating around in her imagination somewhere!!! As always, I would suggest you start from Book 1 in any of these series, and she has many, one more amazing than the last. And the best part? You don't have to wait 6 months to a year for the next book!!! And I promise you, after you read the first one in ANY of her series, you will be hooked, and wish Book 2 was already in your hands!!!!! Happy reading!!!
We get to know a couple of very interesting, very peculiar shifters. This one was good, like all the others, but this one also has the classic misunderstanding that almost condemns the relationship, but where everything works well because of love. Nuke has a difficult animal and a complicated past, but not as much as Trina's that is still caught in her past. She arrives at the new crew looking to protect those she loves, just like Nuke is looking for something to protect, but each of them have different goals, but once they fall in love with each other, their priorities change a little. I really love the band of misfits and to see how so many shifters with different backgrounds are finding their place there. And I just love to see how people is capable of changing and improving, and facing odds. They are there for the right reasons, and will keep fighting for what's right. I can't wait to learn more about the others, and I'm glad the series is still going.
This is the sixth book in the series. They are better read in order. This is Nuke and Trina’s book. Nuke is old and powerful. He knows what a danger he can be. His beast must be kept under control at all times. He has to be carful he lets get close to him or who he cares about because of the beast. Trina is stuck between a rock and a hard place. She doesn’t want to do what she is doing but she doesn’t really have a choice. Most would be scared of Nuke but Trina isn’t and with each minute she begins to feel safer with him. But what will happen when the crew learns why she is really there. Will they understand why or will they throw her to the wolves so to speak? This book was so good. I love Nuke so much. He has struggled so much. Trina helps him in a way that he never imagined he could be helped. The crew is always there for family. Trina is family. I love these characters so much. They have all been through so much. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Fantastic job T.S. Joyce.
No one has any idea what I am.. Nuke's my name and destruction is my game if I let my animal out that is.... I finally found a place to hang my hat, so to speak in a crew of misfits, but at least I know they won't dig into what my animal is, know that I am the last if my kind. When I catch a looksie at Trina because I can't smell what animal she is, so she must be human right? I am taken by her beauty, but she would never want to be with a monster like me and I wouldn't want her to, or would I?
Everyone thinks I am human, if they only knew what I carry inside, I am different, and no one would guess in a million years. Then when that hunk Nuke gives chase and is about to change my animal rips out of me and I am the only one that has ever been able to stop the change in him. Now everyone knows my secret and I don't care. All I care about is rescuing my sister Tory from that terrible Crow Blooded Manning and for that I must do the unthinkable to those that have only shown me kindness.
This book is full of surprises and hot passion between the two least thought.
Loved this book! I’ve read every book in the series and this fits right in by pushing the story forward and showing life in the new crew. Nuke was in the last book so I was excited to read his story and it was amazing! This storyline features betrayal or at least someone sent to betray. There’s a short heartbreaking scene where Nuke finds out about the betrayal. I’m not a fan of either of those storylines usually because I prefer very little drama & no breakups in my stories. Luckily T.S.Joyce is able to pull this off without a hitch and I loved it. If there’s a good reason for betrayal, this is it. Instead of being mad and going off on the betrayer, our hero does become sad & mad but he eventually reaches the conclusion that she wouldn’t betray him without a good cause so he sets out to find her and help her. I love that! This series is amazing and somewhat similar to the Damon/Harpers mountain series so if you loved them then you will love this. Can’t wait for the next one!!
Loved it, the lengths you have to go to make changes in your life. Trina has come a long way being a submissive person and being a follower, taking orders from a deadbeat who have no morale. But Trina has a good heart; however, things changed when she met Nuke Asheater, dragon shifter. Betraying friends was never her intention, but she had no other choice but to obey her Murder King Manning. Trina fell head over heel with Nuke and visa versa, until Manning got in the way of something special, and Trina snapped. But everything worked out and she now found happiness being in a crew that care for each other...now on to Amos can't wait to hear about his story..big fan as always Winzie19 🤗💞.
TS Joyce has the ability to connect pain and joy. She creates characters who have had horrendous things happen in their lives, yet, by finding their special ‘other’ they are given the strength to defy the odds and create a connection of souls that overpower any adversity they have experienced.
To top off her incredibly deep personal dialogue between characters, she shines the most with her hysterical use of slang and unexpectedly joyful and funny responses to budding friendships.
I have never been disappointed in ANY of the hundred plus books I have read by TS Joyce. They are always my go to, when I want to feel excitedly optimistic, laugh aloud, gush at the steamy connections, and find joy in life.
Not sure if I've just binged this series and burned out or if it's the dragon thing, which I'm not a fan of, or if it's the deep grief in this book but I couldn't get all the way through. I read to chapter 3 and then skipped to the end.
In my review of one of the previous books in this series I said that I was concerned that this author was running out of new ideas and I think this book contributed to that worry. The mythological creature idea is just too much for me. I know...I'm saying that a plot device is over the top in a series about people who turn into animals...like, where do I draw the line on suspending reality? Apparently here. I might be fickle.
Anyway, I will finish this series because I do like the author but I don't think that she's an autobuy for me anymore.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This misfit crew is coming together. As with so much of this author's work, the banter between the guys is hilarious.
“I’m the last of my kind,” Amos said, leaning on the side of Nuke’s single-wide trailer. “Congratufuckinlations. You probably annoyed the rest of them into oblivion,...”
I appreciated the idea that's been running through this whole series - you can't judge someone for something they might do in the future and execute them. We learned this with the Bane brothers and now the MMC.
I loved the ignominious end the bad guy gets.
Also I’m always moved by sincere apologies,
“You never had to apologize for what happened in the first place, but if you still need to hear it…you’re forgiven.”
Nuke and Trina's plot was good, but unfortunately I could not rate it higher because there were over a handful of grammatical errors. And not only that but the author put "Tory" in bed with Nuke, another error. It was Trina who was there with him. It was surprising because I have read every single one of this author's books, all of her series and I don't remember seeing this many grammatical errors nor important errors such as the one I referred to. Hopefully, someone is beta reading for her and can catch these things before published and before readers spend the money, maybe an editor is needed.
Another wonderful addition to the Oath of Bane series. The series premise may be the same, but the books are never a copy or repeat of another. Such creativity should/is to be revered. Look at the list of books under this author and I have read every single one of them. I always look forward to her books, always know that they can/will be page turners, tear bringers, and laugh out louders, (I know not a word...lol) They are always a trifecta of emotions, good ones, cherished ones. Good vs Evil. Good always winning, and everyone getting the broken/crooked HEA. Couldn't ask for more. Always well worth your time and $$.
As the new Battleborn Crew moved into the dilapidated trailers provided for them, Trina Hogue, the woman Ren shared a room with in Manning’s crow murder timidly interrupts Nuke as he settles his things in his trailer. Nuke’s inner animal had to see Trina to Ren himself for some reason.
Ren supposed Trina had finally escaped Manning and was willing to help her by at least giving her shelter until she decided what was next. With Trina as his neighbor, Nuke considered her a quasi-friend, they talked a bit together. He presumed Trina had a troubled past like the rest of them, he didn’t know she had a secret and another reason for being there. Rating: 4.25stars
Sometimes you fight. Fight because it's the only thing you can do, you take the little victories along the way. Even when they're tiny because none else knows you're fighting and you have to fight those battles alone. Until one day something happens to change it all and it sneaks up then BOOM everything you thought you had to settle for changes and you're finally not alone in the fight anymore and now you choose the battles. My new favorite book!
