If you scared go to church!!

Janjan untamed books are for the grown who are not afraid to dive into the mind of a master storyteller. I'm not gonna lie this book had me in my feelings from Page 1 and I was swooning like I needed a fainting couch. This book takes us to the days of slavery, with the nasty, depraved, evil individuals who owns slaves and treated them worse than cattle. I cried with this book As with most of her books but with this book I had to pause wipe my tears take a breath and keep reading to find out what happened next, It's not for the weak. How does one find love in this era when its forbidden to love a slave, and a sympathizer is as worse as a slave. This is a Shakespearean tragedy of romeo and Juliet in the days of slavery. Read the book if you're not scared!!! But have your tissues with you.

Good Lawd!

Jan Jan just triggered me all throughout this book. For me, it was hard to read but I just had to finish it. I pray to God that no female slave had to endure what Darling/ Coffee/ Marceline had to. Her life was one of continuous torture. She craved a free life but her body was not her own. She craved a family and motherhood of her own but Old Devil Phil made sure that would not happen. She only got a slight bit of family with the little girl and boy in town but the Devils even took that away. She wished she could keep them but knew she could not. Even the life of a free child was not free. Eliot, who claimed to love her knew what his duty was to the Sinclair plantation and that was to provide an heir, something that Darling could not do thanks to old Phil. Even if she did, that child would have been born a slave. Even Dominick was of no help. He snuck around with Coffee but bullied her in the presence of others.

White women had it almost as bad, at least they did not endure the sexual abuse of the men. Their job was only to birthed the heir children and keep up the status of the family. They did not even clean the house as they had slaves to do the housekeeping. But they took the credit for how well the house was managed. They were thankful for the wenches who took the sexual attention of the men off of them. In this book, they were all DEVILS and I could see why!

This book triggered me to no end. With all of that said, I HATE CLIFF HANGERS!!!! Will Coffee finally find her freedom?

NOTE: This book made Facebook's BWSL Top 2022 list.

Enjoyed!

This was the most emotional story I've read in a long time. I felt so bad for Coffee and she really needs to leave Elliot alone. This book has triggers warning I would recommend if you can handle the WARNINGS.

Couldn't Put it Down

Devil's Darling and Darling Unchained (Book 2), kept me thoroughly captivated. I read both of these two fairly lengthy books in under 36 hours because I.literally could not put them down. In fact I skipped work to finish Devil's Darling! Dominic and Marceline's (known as Darling to her evil slavers) story is tragic, sad exciting and glorious all at once. I am sure I experienced every possible emotion while reading these two books! This review actually applies to both.

I should say that these books are not easy to reads, especially as a Black woman. And sitting next to my white partner while reading definitely provided me with some uncomfortable moments = but they were well worth it. The books follow the story of Marceline, a Black woman born into slavery and abused in the most horrific ways by her slavers, the Sinclair family. Frankly I have a difficult time watching movies about this time period in America's history - I have yet to see 12 Years a Slave and could barely sit thru Change Unchained. I typically avoid books with a slavery theme as well, but for some reason decided to give these two books a try and then couldn't out them down. The bok describes the horror of slavery in vivid detail and I have to commend Hannah Untamed for the amount if research she must have done to create such an historically accurate account. But prepared to be shocked and horrified by some of what is described in the books. I admittedly had to stop a couple of times to gather myself before I could continue reading. However I laughed and cried just as many tears of joy.

It is difficult to descibe these books without giving away spoilers, but ultimately is just a great love story where the two main characters go through a LOT before they can finally truly be together. The only thing I questioned about the books was its paranormal element. It almost seemed gratuitous and unnecessary as it didn't seem to contribute much to the storyline.... And then I got to the last chapter and made perfect sense!

I highly recommend these books, but make sure to give yourself lots of uninterrupted reading time!

I just want better for Darling

JanJan always has an unconventional black female character. But boy does she take them through hell before we get to the HEA. And I always wonder if it’ll have a paranormal twist. This book made me cry so much for how they treated Darling. You just couldn’t help but want more for her.

Darling aka Coffee is a slave for a family who all use her in the worst way. She calls them all devils.

Hopefully Darling realizes that Elliot can only care for her so much. A slave master will always be in a position of power, and that power dynamic will never sit right with me. He doesn’t even say much to defend her. Elliot is the worst of them all because he pretends to care. And the whole Phillip dynamic is gross. But what choice does a slave have? That family was literally the worst. Dominic is trash. Old man Phil is trash. Literally, throw the whole family away. And Darling thinks these men love her. It’s so sad.

Brat and Henri had me weak.

She did make a reference in the beginning as the plantation being home. Quite a few misspelled words.

I wasn’t ready. This story rings with authenticity. Omg people. If you don’t like reading about slavery, don’t read the damn book if you are going to cry about it! Do you expect everything to be a romance novel?

....Devil Darlin'

Went in thinking this will be 'in the life of...' Not at all. I knew I was in for it when the first few words of chapter one started the way it did.

There was no sense of happiness in the life of Marceline; a house slave, (slave name Coffee, Darlin) especially when she's the favorite of the master of the plantation; Ole Phil, who takes sadistic pleasures on her and other slaves he own.

Marceline can read, write and plays the violin- she is smart and knows when to use it and other times does not, like helping field slaves escape but when face with the opportunity and help to run berself she is scared and worried to do it. Because of 'love', I put this in quotes because the ones who manipulate her thinking its love are brothers; Elliot and Phillip, the slave master sons.
She avoid their cousin Dominic like the plague and her only friend is Chantilly (Tilly); she works in the kitchen and I don't even want to call their friendship the best kind when it's not. Between you and me, I think Tilly is jealous of her, and the more you read the book, you can (or can not ) see why.

Something unexpected happens when Elliot is married and she is task in purchasing dresses for Fallon and Sissy (Wife of Ole Phil and their daughter) in New Orleans with Dominic; A plot twist I didn't see coming.
Marceline (Coffee) narrates her life in such a way that you want her to win, run, get away from the Sinclairs: "a cage with razors for bars"

Look, THE triggers are triggering, and JanJan Untamed does not sugarcoat any of them, but it shouldn't stop you from purchasing the book. This is well worth the read, and I recommend it.
By the way- I am very happy I don't have to wait for Book 2 to drop sitting on that cliffhanger of an ending.

A Masterpiece !

I don’t know how to start this review, so I will let my heart speak.
I just finished the Devil’s Darling Duet and would like to thank JanJan for this masterpiece. Tears are running down my face as I am writing this : yes, I am an emotional reader.

This story was perfectly achieved. The authors’ mind is incredible ; and her words express it in a unique way.
This book captivated me. I was trapped in this story. My heart was on a rollercoaster with different emotions at every page...
Ending this book was heartbreaking, as i grew attached to the characters. The only way to heal my heart will be to read this duet a second time…

This is JanJan’s third book i am reading. I fell in love with her writing months ago when I read « The View From The Bottom », another masterpiece.

Her writing is imperfectly perfect. Some will say her imagination is harsh, i will say her imagination is embodied, incarnate. Some will say her words are crude, i will say her words are real…

Thank you for the amazing work !

speechless

My mother died a year ago from cancer. I took care of her until the end. At her funeral I did not cry, I’d said all I needed to say to her, and god willing I will see her again. But this book… this book had me crying several times. I don’t know how Darlin’ could live like that, how could anyone?? How could people be so cruel??? I wouldn’t have survived it, I know myself. I would have done something to get myself hanged (hopefully, b/c being skinned alive among other things sounds insane painful). So much pain and anguish. It’s no wonder blacks in America have so much generational trauma. JanJan outdid herself with this book.

YES!!!!!!!!!!

JanJan did it again. I’m an avid reader, and when I realized her book wasn’t part of my subscription to Kindle Unlimited, I didn’t hesitate to purchase it because I knew it would be good. Janjan did not disappoint. And what was the best part was she had already written the second book, so I didn’t have to wait months. I’m not going into much detail about the story because I don’t want to disappoint you. In my honest opinion, sometimes reviews don’t do the story justice. But please, read this book, you won’t regret it.

Disappointing

I am trying to see the point of this book. Why write a story detailing someone’s pain without any relief in sight. I did not know I would be reading a book just detailing the horrors of slavery. I admit I had to skip over certain sections as the never ending brutality and abuse was just pointless. I am not denying such horrific events occurred however I am trying to see the point of all this book. It appears there is a part 2 that may offer some answer as to the point of this book. Jeez!

This author always pushes boundaries and straddles a very fine line between being entertained or being scandalized. This story is sex and more sex with a developing plot. There was a scene that involved Phillip and Elliott that occurred that I’m glad never resurfaced or had future re-visits. I think every reader knows which scene I am referring to. Can’t wait to read how this story concludes but we as the readers already have an inclination or extreme hope that Coffee aka Darlin will get a HEA.

Devil's Darling

I was not sure if I could make it through this novel. As a woman of color the emotional Rollercoaster 🎢 ride too real while reading about the dear Marceline. I almost did not read the book due to the time period. However, since JanJan is one of my favorite authors I had to check it out against all conventions I have about slavery and reading 📚 about it. Once I started reading I could not stop. It's a messed up, but it's a horrible tale worthy of recognition.

Unique Plot, But Beware of Errors

This was an interesting - but difficult - read. Not just because of the setting but also because of the grammatical errors on top of the dialect.

The story ended very abruptly, which is frustrating, too. The few glimpses of the paranormal needed to be fleshed out more.

I’m going to read the next book because I need closure, but I wouldn’t otherwise continue considering how poorly edited this first book was.

Mixed Feelings

I have mixed feelings about this book. I have loved everything Janjan has written before but I'm conflicted on this one. I usually do not like any book about slavery or anything that attempts to romanticize it in any way, but I can't stop reading it. Darlin is delusional and I get frustrated with her but other times I feel sorry for her.

This is not for the faint of heart. A signature JanJan Untamed story. This time the author tackles historical erotic romance in her unconventional way. This isn't for everyone. It will probably trigger a lot of folks. If you are easily offended, I recommend bypassing this one. However, if you dig JanJan's style, this is one of her best. My rating 4.9

This is a hard book to read. The FMC is depressing and after a certain point in time, as a reader, I wanted her to take the risk and leave the plantation with none of the MMC because they are all horrible. The plot is amazing though very thrilling towards the later half of the book.
