After surviving a brain aneurysm, Bethany is happy to simply get through each day without forgetting to pack her daughter a lunch or pick her up from school. She’s been a single mom since Ruby was born, and that’s the way she likes it. She’s found family in the large group of friends who have welcomed her and her daughter in Hope Springs. This book was great. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't stop reading until the very last page. Valerie Bodden has a way of pulling me into the characters lives and keeping me hooked until I'm sure they get a HEA. I loved how much these two complemented one another and how they helped each other on their individual paths. And Ruby was hilarious.

Not Until Then is book nine in the Hope Springs series, but I believe that you could hop into this story and enjoy it even if you haven’t read any other books from the series. The author does a good job of sharing Bethany and Ruby’s backstory, which includes Bethany’s brain aneurism trauma that occurred in book eight, Not Until Now.
It was captivating to read about such a unique character as Bethany. She was incredibly forgetful due to the damage that the aneurism caused and she many times grew frustrated with herself and her limitations. Her forgetfulness led to feelings of embarrassment around others sometimes, but I was impressed with how she worked to manage things as well as she did.
James was a tragic character, full of pain and heartache related to his daughter’s death years earlier. He didn’t want to be staying in Hope Springs and would rather bury himself in his job to try to forget the past. The way these two met was fun and James’ surprise at Bethany not remembering him the first few times was great! I really liked the way he treated her forgetfulness both before and after he learned of her struggles. Even though he was sometimes gruff, his caring attitude showed through anyway.
They way Bethany and James grew to love each other was swoon worthy, as was the way James began to love Bethany’s daughter, Ruby, even as he still struggled with the pain of his loss. These three made a great family and I loved watching that family develop.

If you like a book that grabs you from the start, this one does…. At least it did me. I actually could feel the thoughts of helplessness, the thoughts of disappointment and the thoughts of thankfulness for still breathing. Forgetting her purse, leaving her keys locked up in the car along with her phone can’t be helped. Bethany’s forgetfulness isn’t from negligence, nor is she a scatterbrain. Her forgetfulness is a leftover affect from an aneurism suffered a couple years ago. She becomes frustrated with herself but at the same time she is thankful to be alive.
The last five years hasn’t been easy for James either. It’s not easy when you lose a child. Add to that his marriage ending in divorce, James is running on empty. He’s lost everything of importance, at least that’s what he believes. He is lost, turns his back on God thinking God turned His back on him.
Both Bethany and James had painful losses and both reacted differently. Bethany turned to God, James turned away.
Bethany may be frustrated with herself but she’s not alone. She allowed friends and family into her life. James is doing his best to keep them out. He wants to block out the pain, the memories, the losses. Just like Bethany, James has to come to the point where he makes a choice …. believe or not believe.
As it says in Isaiah 55:8-:, ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’

Bethany needs to point out the above Isaiah verse to James and other scriptures that show God is all knowing…. He knows the end from the beginning.
In John 6: 67-68 …. Jesus said to the twelve: ‘You do not want to go away also, do you?’ Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.’
Like the disciples asked, where else is there to go? James can choose life, where Sadie is now and for eternity, or he can choose death and never see Sadie again. James had no idea what the future had in store for Sadie, God did. HE allowed her to come home, to her real home.
This may sound cruel to some reading this, but I speak with the voice of experience. I chose spending eternity with Jesus and my only child, my son. When put in perspective, there is no other choice. I so very much look forward to ‘reunion day’. Until then I work the harvest…. It is plentiful but the laborers are few.

Bethany had an aneurysm in the brain which burst while she was driving her daughter. She had slowed, and so the impact had left her then 7 year old daughter unhurt, and brought Cam, her brother and only living relative, to Hope Springs, where Bethany lay in a coma from which it was iffy she'd ever wake up.
But she did, with a fair amount of residual damage: vertigo, severe headaches, and marked short term memory loss. Now, 3 years later, she struggles to remember things despite phone alarms and a notebook and calendar.
This STML, (the medical shorthand for short term memory loss) is how she meets James, brother to Emma, who owns the riding school where Ruby takes dressage lessons. Because she mucks out the stables one day a week to help pay for the lessons, and James is out there working off his temper, they are unintentionally thrown together, amd he finds her usually calm and quiet demeanor pleasant.
James is a Milwaukee cop who was recently shot and is on a forced extended leave. His gruff and sad ways tug at the hearts of both Bethany and her daughter Ruby, who try to cheer him up.
Emma, James's sister, ends up with a serious diagnosis, and when his mom comes to help, she had a surprise announcement. James returns to Milwaukee, where he finds something he didn't know he needed. Hope Springs has offered him a job if he wants it. There is a runin with vandalism and ptheft at Cam's business, where Bethany works for her brother, which Bethany helps solve. There are more babies now in their circle. And, throughout all, Scripture is skillfully woven into the story to support the characters.
Of course, romances are by nature a formula of boy and girl meet, there is what is in essence a human mating dance of sorts as they decide what they do and don't like about each other, and whether or not any obstacles can be overcome, and a final resolution; but the author has a decent handle on the characters and how they fit into these elements, making them more than just a 2 dimensional read in this series. There is something unique about each couple in the series.
Emma won't get her chance until November 2023, when the next book is due for release, as of this writing, 7 months or so away. Meanwhile, Grace and Levi have a spinoff series based on Grace's 6 brothers, one of whom is estranged. There are 2 or 3 books in that series of you want to try it in the meantime.

A beautifully written story about second chances and the realization that when bad things happen God is still with us. I can’t imagine what it would be like to go through my days without the ability to retain any short term memory as Bethany does in this story! She has concentrated on taking care of all of the little things involved in raising her daughter on her own while surrounding herself with an amazing group of her friends in Hope Springs. When James’ boss forces him to take time off while recovering from an injury he decides to help his sister, Emma at her horse stables in Hope Springs. He’d lost his family 5 years ago and has concentrated on work since, closing himself off to any semblance of a family of his own. I loved reading how these two people interacted when they seemed to keep finding themselves together. Bethany’s daughter, Ruby has those pure eyes of a child and no reservations about taking the extra effort to get James to open up and enjoy life. These characters show so well how our experiences in life jade us and make us put up walls to protect ourselves from our past hurts reoccurring and often to others finding out what those are. This story is the perfect mix of the pure eyes of a child and the love of God working in a person’s life. Neither one will stop! And mixing in a wonderful community of believers made this story a must-read for me!

This is a book of fiction but with flawed characters. Realistic in the sense that both Bethany and James had events in the past that kept them from living their best lives now. Bethany had raised her daughter Ruby from birth by herself. After suffering from a brain aneurysm and surviving, Bethany has a hard time remembering things in the present. Very hard on her ten year old daughter.
James has a trauma from five years ago where his daughter Sophia was killed. He won’t let himself get close to anyone in fear something will happen to them. He almost totally shuns any children that come in contact with him making them think he doesn’t like them. His “secret” stays inside him and tortures him relentlessly.
Both of these characters tore at my heart. They were becoming friends but neither wanted anything more. James especially had a hard time being around Ruby, realizing she is the age Sophie would have been. There is a strong emphasis on friendship and the way all the characters lend a hand to those that need it without being asked. This was a wonderful addition to the Hope Springs series of stories. It is a clean and wholesome story with real world challenges and struggles.
Bethany had struggled earlier in her life until her vivacious daughter, Ruby who was now 10 years old. Bethany had an aneurysm burst a couple of years ago affecting her short-term memory making it difficult to remember anything current so she had to set alarms on her phone, make notes and keep a notebook just to be able to "remember" what she needs to do so she doesn't forget.
James was still reeling from the death of his daughter six years ago. He felt responsible and had closed his heart to any further hurt or heartbreak and then he met Bethany and Ruby, and try as he might, they got under his skin. Was it worth the possibility of further heartbreak if he took a chance on love again or was it safer to remain closed off to love to keep his heart locked away?
This story is based on Christian principles of forgiveness of others and yourself and realizing that God's love extends to all and sometimes we don't get the answers to our prayers that we desperately want because God knows all.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

I absolutely loved James and Bethany's story!! I want a man just like James!!!!!! Bethany has short term memory issues, thanks to an aneurysm. She has problems remembering words, and getting the right words out. She also has some impulse concerns. When she meets James, it's her daughter Ruby's birthday. She introduces herself to him numerous times that day, as she doesn't remember him. James isn't sure what Bethany's problem is when they first meet, until his sister explains about what happened. James is drawn to Bethany, though he tries to fight it. The more he fights it, the more he's drawn to her. The last thing James wants is to get involved with anyone, and especially someone with a child. Will these two people, broken in different ways, be able to create new memories together, or will they be apart? When James finally realizes that God has been with him all along, will he be able to face a future with Bethany, or will he run away again? This book runs the gamut of emotions, and you'll be pulling for James and Bethany through it all!!

Bethany had an aneurysm and couldn’t quite get the right words out plus she had impulse control issues. She was raising her daughter Ruby all by herself. Bethany definitely had challenges but she was so dedicated to God she was bound and determined to forge forward. She runs into a James a stranger at the store and he saves the day by purchasing the necklace she wanted to give her daughter for her birthday. James was Emma’s brother whom gave Ruby horse riding lessons and Bethany mucked the stalls to help pay for the lessons. Ruby was exactly what James needed but he didn’t see that way. James was also dealing with a huge heart break and he had blocked out everyone from his life. Emma then has health issues and all most pushes James over the edge. But I really did enjoy when Bethany pretended she had forgot the kiss!
I love how the author really makes you think about what we do to ourselves when we don’t put the problems in God’s hands. This was such a heartbreaking but yet a much needed read.

Valerie sure knows how to write a great story! Bethany is a single mother taking care of Ruby her daughter. Bethany has been through a lot through her life. Drug addict, converted immediately after becoming pregnant with Ruby. Ruby's dad is a drug addict so Bethany leaves to take care of her daughter. Bethany had recently suffered from an aneurysm which caused significant problems in her life ie: dizziness, memory loss-which causes significant problems as she can't remember many details. Bethany doesn't know if she can care for her daughter correctly, but she loves her wholeheartedly. James is a broken police officer. He lost his little girl to an accident so he is very bitter and keeps his feelings close to heart. He is put on leave by his command to a shot to his arm. He doesn't feel like he needs to be on leave, but goes to visit his sister. He meets Bethany and neither of them know how to love correctly, or put their feelings aside to learn to care for each other. Through a process of time and events they come to love each other, but don't know how to share these feelings. Great sweet story. My honest opinion for my honest review.

Life is complicated and messy, but nothing ever worth having, comes easy. Bethany was still struggling with memory issues when she met a James, who was also still grieving. Fate brought them into each other’s lives at a time when they needed it the most. It would take time and the interference of a precocious ten year old, to lead them down a path towards their second chance at finding happiness.
This story highlighted the fact that despite the fact life owes us nothing, it usually gives each of us a second chance to get it right.
Lamentations 3:21-23 NIV “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
I suggest you get the tissues ready, because this story will wring your heart out as you turn the pages, but leave you feeling really good by the time you read the final word. It was a heartfelt story that you will definitely love reading.

These characters are so flawed, so broken in ways, but so very relatable. Bethany has a past that could haunt her but instead drives her focus upward. She feels the pinch of her deficiency over and over again. She perceives judgment by others that creates a vulnerability in her soul but also highlights a sensitivity to the pain of others. James is hard, sad and closed. He’s done with people, done with God, just done. His pain is more than anyone should have to bear. But the hits keep on coming, over and over again. Ms. Bodden takes these characters through their sorrows and points all of us to a deeper walk in Christ. I appreciate how her works are realistic in scope. The characters aren’t perfect, they don’t have shiny exquisite lives, they don’t always do the right thing. In fact, sometimes they do the worst things, but she never leaves them without hope. The sermons included in this story are challenging but the one referencing Horatio Spafford is especially meaningful. Preacher Dan asks, “Is it well with your soul?” Hmmm.

When Bethany meets James she begins to feel that hope again but will James be able to let his heart love again? Not Until Then by Valerie Bodden is a story of two very different people who need a second chance at life. Bethany embraces her faith after a near fatal medical crisis and ongoing memory loss. She does the best she can to raise her daughter Ruby with the help of family and friends. James walked away from his faith after his little girl was killed in an accident and the subsequent failure of his marriage. He continues to work as a Police Detective but lets no one close, that is, until he meets Bethany and Ruby. This story will bring you to tears with the emotions the characters walk through. Faith is interwoven throughout and I especially enjoyed Pastor Dan’s sermons and how they affected James. All the previous characters we have met in the series make appearances as well. This is a well written and wonderful story.

Bethany is a flawed character and not just because of the choices she made as a teen and adult that destroyed her family but because she struggles from a brain injury. She turned her life around for her daughter Ruby and she is working on finding ways to cope and be self-sufficient. But that doesn't mean she can't open her heart to romantic love. James can't forgive himself for what happened to his daughter. He doesn't think he deserve love and is afraid to get hurt again by allowing Bethany and Ruby in. But talkative matchmaker Ruby is determined to bring them together. If only Bethany and James can see that they are worthy of the love, they have for each other before they push it away. There were several emotional moments in this Christian romance where I felt the characters pain and rejoiced with their happiness.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and clean romance. I have never known anyone who had an aneurysm, so it was interesting to find out up close the difficulties involved in living with it afterwards. The characters were well-developed and likable, and I loved the spiritual lessons artfully woven throughout the story. It was also good to read about those other familiar Hope Springs people from past books. Ruby was an especially fun addition to the story, and it was wonderful to see her prayers answered and the happy ending for everyone. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author, and Ms. Bodden has become a favorite of mine. I have given my honest and voluntary opinion, and anxiously await the next book in this series.

I found this story very touching. Even though I do not completely agree on a theological level (it was not clear for me what the author exactly meant, but I had the impression she was saying that it was God’s plan for Sadie to die at such a young age), the characters were deep and true. Their thoughts, problems, doubts, and actions all seemed so very human, they could have been mine all along. I love that this author describes circumstances that are relatable, in which the struggles are overwhelming, just like in everyday life. It makes the happy ending so much sweeter and offers hope that in Christ, we can all overcome all that is thrown our way.

Every single book I’ve read in this series has been so good!! Bethany and James’s story is too three for me for sure. James’s resistance to loving again due to the death of his daughter is understandable. I think when people go through things like that it can be hard to live again, let alone believe again but thank God for the goodness of God. He’s still faithful even when we aren’t, He’s still taking care of us even when we think He isn’t. And Bethany’s faith throughout her past and her aneurysm was wonderful to see. Though there were moments where she seemed to doubt her usefulness due to her condition, it’s wonderful to see how she was able to overcome it in the end.
I love this series so much. I can’t believe I’m about to read the last book of this series!!

Don't you love it when a message is just for you? This is a book I won't be forgetting anytime soon! What started out as a cozy romance dance between James and Bethany, (and yes, that part is wonderful- the book is worth it for that alone!), suddenly hit me right between the eyes! I had been stressing about something that was happening in my life when James was subject to the sermon about Amnesia about God's Goodness. Suddenly I stopped stressing- I'm sure it will be okay. There is another message about second chances, and one "scene", if you will, almost had me bawling. Real characters, real scenarios, this is a very relatable and relevant book.

This book grabbed my attention and pulled me in right from the start with a memorable meet-cute between Bethany and James. The characters in this story had all suffered trauma, guilt, and grief in the past that had residual effects and they were in different places in their journeys toward hope but God put them on a path together and with a little help from Ruby, Bethany's daughter, they found healing from above as well as a future together. This book made me shed a few tears, smile a few smiles, and even laugh aloud a few times. I am delighted to recommend it! The story of Bethany and James is so sweet , yet tragic as well. They both are struggling with past events in their lives. James has given up on God, but Bethany is learning to trust Him more. The work of God in their lives is inspirational and heartwarming. The author has created wonderful, realistic characters that capture the heart. Ruby brings a spot of humor and trust in God that influences both James and Bethany. The group of friends that surround and assist Bethany and help keep Bethany growing in her faith. This is a wonderful book and grabs the reader from the very beginning.

There is a perfect match for everyone
I love Valerie Bodden's Christian love stories. When the right people come together and have the faith and love of Jesus Christ in their hearts, many good things can happen. Reading and listening to scripture can answer many questions and lead your thinking and actions to the right place for you. James and Bethany each had some devastating circumstances in their past and many doubts about their self worth. With the support of friends and each other they were able to delve into their religious beliefs and rediscover their love for God which opened their lives to one another

I really liked this story. It is bout real life stories of struggle people go through. Bethany and her daughter Ruby struggled every day. Bethany had an aneurysm and lost part of her short term memory. This made it difficult raising Ruby, an eight year old. Bethany was in in a store trying to buy a birthday present for Ruby. She discovered she left her purse in the car. But James cane to her rescue. He gave his debt card to pay for the item. Going to the car, Bethany found her purse, locked in her car with the Keyes inside. Again James came to the rescue, he was a policeman, and he ways to jiggle her lock open. Enjoy their finding love and and happiness.

Bethany and james
I thought this was the last book in hope springs because there is a new series out (I read that series first well the first two books as it's still on going waiting on next book) I later looked up this series but after reading I see that Emma will get a HEA so more to come.
This book pushes you into new characters and ones that was in comas in other books.I do get frustrated with the time jumps we miss marriages babies being born etc.These books focus on the meeting and getting together with some kind of push and pull drama in the middle once the I love you have crossed lips and faith in God is back we more on to others.

- Highly highly recommend reading book 8 (not until now) to get more of Bethany’s backstory, as I feel like just starting the book u might be as confused as James was lol, It also makes for a much tender read from the JUMP if u read book 8, bc u know all that Bethany (and ruby) have been through to get to where they are now!

- slow burn (?) kinda not really it’s hard to explain
- Second Chance Salvation, James comes back to God on his own in a very humbling & personal way

- Lowkey wanted more from the ending, it felt a bit rushed !!

I had a hard time putting this book down. I “met” Bethany in Bodden’s earlier book about her brother Cam, so was intrigued to read more about Bethany’s challenges with surviving a brain aneurysm. Bodden does a good job with the challenges of short term memory loss and being the parent of an active child. James’ challenges with losing people he’s loved added extra depth, and I appreciated the way Bodden deals with why God allows things like that.

Wonderful book! I loved James and Bethany's story. James was running from the sorrow of the death of his daughter Sadie. Bethany was trying to rebuild her life with her daughter Ruby, after having a life altering Aneurysm. I laughed and cried for the struggles these 3 people were having to wade through. Little Ruby, so young to have to deal with her Mom's memory loss. If you like clean heartfelt stories with second chances, you will love 'Not Until Then'! I highly recommend. Page turner? Unpredictable? Message of Truth? Real life happenings? This wonderful, well written book has it all and more! I lived the emotions, the ups and downs, the twists and turns of Bethany and James from beginning to end, daring to hope for a happily ever after but was kept wondering chapter after chapter. To experience the despair, the at times hopelessness, while yet also being swept away in the joys and victories, both small and large, is a true testament to the gift of writing this author possesses. I am eagerly awaiting her next book!!

Not Until Then is a heartwarming, inspirational Christian romance. I am so glad Bethany had her Hope Springs family to help with her short term memory loss. I cannot imagine how hard it would be to try to raise a ten year old alone and with no day to day memory. She used some great coping skills! I was glad to see James let go of some of his pain. These two make a great couple and both love Ruby. Their journey to an HEA kept me reading straight through. This is another amazing story from Ms. Bodden.
