I don't know what to say. I might post a review when I reread this series in a few years (or this part specifically), but I wish I could articulate how masterful it all is.
Part 1 was at 19th Centuary England, Part 2 was around late 30s just before world war II and it spaned from America to Italy. Part 1's Jonathan Joester, the 1st Jojo was a noble gentleman, Part 2's Joseph Joester The 2nd Jojo (the grand son of Jonathan) was a hot headed smart and talented kid who could use hamon special tecniques without training and he loved comics, it cought my eyes that he had Superman comics in his hands at a flight travel panel in plane. lol Jonathan and Joseph look visually exactly the same btw. I didn't like the Part 2 as much as the Part 1 cause Part 1 had a pure 100% evil villain called Dio and the end was sour... I like a villain who has no trace of goodness in him/her and i actually like bad ends over anything but a sour end was close so it has my symphaties. lol Part 2's naive parts bothered me more for some reason and villains were bigger, Santviento, Wamuu, Esidisi and The Master of them all Kars, the 4 Pilar Men, Pilar Men were god like beings, they all had their special powers so they were bigger than the first part's villain Dio who was just a Vampire, after all the next installment must be bigger, and some of the villains had honor at Part 2 so it wasn't as much as appealing to me like a pure evil villain Dio. The stone mask of the first part was connected to the Pilar Man btw.
Dio, Esidisi and Zeppeli character names sounds familiar to you too ? If you like Rock and Metal music, it must have. These names come from none other than the famous Metal Band Dio and AC DC (Esidisi) and Rock band Led Zeppelin (Zeppeli). Mangaka Hirohiko Araki is a Rock and Metal music lover just like his many readers including me.
Jojo part 1 and 2 was not for everyone for sure. If you can endure, look over some naive writting and if you especially have a taste for some naivety like half an hour falls from hights and the fights still go on while they are falling, the outragously naive ways that they survive from the falls... Joseph's way of wining the battles, Ceasar's Bubbles... those were impossible to buy into. Especially If you have a taste for naive parts like those, you will like Jojo part 1 and 2. I started to read Jojo cause people say it got really good with Part 3: The Stardust Crusaders so i read it for the promise of good future parts and i'm there now, i will see how good it's. Just waiting for Part 3 to be completed in its english publication so i can read it from start to finish without a long break.
The final volume in the second arc of JoJo's comes to an exciting and emotional close. I bought all four of the Battle Tendency Collection after finishing Phantom Blood hardcovers and am so glad I randomly stumbled upon this series and it instantly became a top 5 manga for me. Do yourself a favor and buy JoJo's in bulk. It is the best way to read it! And the best is yet to come in Stardust Crusaders.
Seriously, that's gotta be one of the best endings, just for the sheer audacity required to pull it off. The author literally created an invincible villain and an impossible situation, so, "Whoops! Can't write yourself out of that one!" But then he does, in the most clever and bizarre way possible. I will never not chuckle when someone brings it up.
This was a hunk of a book, ending at 405 pages, which is long for manga. But it was 405 pages of exhilarating thrills and kills. Though there's a lot going on, the action scenes are seamless and easy to follow, considering how intense and unexpected they can be. Joseph's tagline is "As far as little old me is concerned, the only rule is that there are no rules!", which is exactly how the author writes.
Part Two is not my favorite, but so far, Joseph Joestar has the most amusing personality. Somehow he's always one step ahead but so slow at the same time. Yes, if she was born 50 years ago that makes her 50 years old, JoJo. No, those are not dinosaurs, those are horses, JoJo. He's so adorable.
And it concerns me how much I like Stroheim, seeing as how he's a legit Nazi.
Thus concludes Part Two, and what a wild ride it was.
THIS SERIES IS PRETTY DAMN CRAZY and deserves every one of the 5 stars.
With 30 years on the making, I think this is the ultimate shonen and the one who inspired all those others who become super popular in western world during the last years of the 80's, during the 90's and the years after that.
3.5 stars maybe? 403 pages and lisa lisa gets 2 pages for her fight with kars where she is immediately taken out and then her body is used as a pawn and the nazi gets to fight with joseph then later dies an “honourable death as a proud german soldier.” i guess that’s not really important to the quality or entertainment value of the fights but was something i thought was yucky and couldn’t really get past. liked the fight with wamuu but kars was :/ i think it went on a little long. i did think it was funny that he was just launched into space at the end tho. no caesar also means it just has to be the worst book of this part.

The conclusion to this one was pretty good. Not as good as Part One imo, and there are definitely some things about this Part I didn’t love. But overall a solid next step in the story and the final battle with Kars in particular was great!
me trying to focus on the plot while kars is on page: 👁👁
also I'm simply chosing to believe caesar didn't die and he and joseph got married instead of some random lady who was around for like half a chapter before disappearing until she married jojo and not a single person can stop me
Off the back of part 1, Part 2 of Jojos is incredible. I seriously couldn't put it down once I started reading it. The villains are great and our main group of heroes are fun and unique, some parts definitely show their age but it's still a fantastic read. Harmon was actually interesting in this part which was super refreshing.
i’ve been telling so many people including myself that i was going to read jjba for like… eight years??? so i do have an obligation to finish it, but holy shit. this is unbearably bad. i hate it.
Wow, ¡Ese final!
And we're done with part 2 of the JoJo saga. it had some merits over part 1, but the antagonism of Jonathan and Dio still wins! also i can't stomach the nazi buddies in this part.
- jojo and lisa lisa strike some incredible poses and walk like a power couple - lisa lisa is connected to jojo in ways more than we thought - vampire horses! - the chariot fight was wild. i mean, anything goes with these guys! - won't deny that jojo has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, so he's really resourceful - the stone mask's origin story, finally!
Okay, hang on cause this is going to get bizarre. Also, spoilers...
So Lisa Lisa and Jojo confront Kars and Wamuu and somehow manages to persuade everyone into two one-on-one battles . Wamuu vs. Jojo ends up being an awesome chariot race with vampire horses. Yes, vampire horses, they're the stuff of nightmares and I love them.
Anyway, Lisa Lisa faces Kars and while that is happening, Speedwagon, Stroheim, and Smokey all converge on the scene to bear witness to the awesome Jojo showdown.
The best moment, however, comes during Jojo's funeral.
These fights were great. Joseph becomes a better character over the course of this volume, and the Pillar Men prove to be more than serviceable bad guys. The ending was great, and I like how Araki topped it all off. It's dated, and there were some pretty cringe-worthy social subjects, but if you look past that, Battle Tendency ends up being a pretty solid arc for JoJo. Excited to finally start Stardust Crusaders.
"You it can dish it out, but you can't take it! And to top it off... you may have lived for ten thousand years, but you'll need another ten before you can best me when it comes to tricks!"
So ends "Battle Tendency," which may or may not still be my favorite Part of JoJo - which I guess I'll be able to confirm whenever I get around to re-reading "Diamond Is Unbreakable," which is probably still the only viable rival.
Uh, why do I like Battle Tendency so much? Well, probably just because it's "Phantom Blood, but better." Simple as. I mean, the Hamon Arc consists of the two shortest Parts in the series. There's no bloat whatsoever, whereas all the Stand Parts feature a "monster of the week" element that arguably drags things out more than necessary (Stardust Crusaders is the worst offender, in my opinion, and I'm not 100% looking forward to re-reading it next...). The key difference between Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, the key element making the latter superior, is that the groundwork for Hamon was already laid in Part 1, so Part 2 is able to get wilder with abilities. The Stand Parts do not work this way; every new Stand Part is a soft-reset, so early Part 5 Stands like Sticky Fingers and Black Sabbath are easily weaker than Killer Queen from the end of Part 4. But in Part 2, the powers escalate from where Part 1 left off, and Santana could easily be seen as stronger than DIO. Of course, this also means Part 2 is the only Part that is really reliant on the existence of its immediate predecessor; Joseph will appear in Parts 3 and 4, but his Hamon powers and his defeat of Cars will not matter much at all for the new stories.
Joseph here is also probably the most entertaining JoJo. His grandfather is somewhat "generically" heroic, his grandson is somewhat generically stoic. His bastard son is a bit of a jokester as well, and also happens to be my second-favorite JoJo, just as his story is my other favorite Part. Neither Giorno, Jolyne, Johnny, nor Josefumi are remotely as zany as Joseph.
I guess one thing I don't love is how Joseph doesn't have one, singular "signature move." I mean, I guess his grandfather didn't really either, but Jonathan did at least have a handful of abilities he reused. Joseph mostly just does whatever seems best in the moment. This actually probably makes Joseph more "unique," but it's hard for me to say when I've grown up with the Kamehameha or Rei Gan from '90s WSJ battle manga. It's already hard for me to deal with the fact that JoJo heroes rarely have power-up transformations....
