The Gold-Bug: Classic Illustrated

Rate this book
The Gold-Bug is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in 1843. The plot follows William Legrand, who was bitten by a gold-colored bug. His servant Jupiter fears that Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator, who agrees to visit his old friend. Legrand pulls the other two into an adventure after deciphering a secret message that will lead to a buried treasure. The story, set on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, is often compared with Poe's "tales of ratiocination" as an early form of detective fiction. Poe became aware of the public's interest in secret writing in 1840 and asked readers to challenge his skills as a code-breaker. He took advantage of the popularity of cryptography as he was writing "The Gold-Bug", and the success of the story centers on one such cryptogram. Modern critics have judged the characterization of Legrand's servant Jupiter as racist, especially because of his comical dialect speech.

The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.

Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.

The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.

Relato recomendado.

One of the best treasure hunting stories ever written! Legrand discovers a mysterious gold bug that resembles the form of a human skull. But what has the bug to do with the strange parchment and what's written in invisible ink upon it? Poe finds some strange numbers written and gives a brilliant description of how to decipher this riddle. And what about the treasure? Would you have found anthing when given that amount of information? A brilliant tale I already liked in my childhood. It hasn't lost anything from its fascination and still is a fantastic read. Set on an exotic island it has all ingredients for a great adventure. Highly recommended

A good story of Poe. It's not as oppressive as others, but the plot is quite complex.

"You will observe that the stories told are all about money-seekers, not about money-finders."
Edgar Allan Poe, The Gold-Bug

This was so different than anything I have ever read by Poe.

A treasure hunt such as one has never experienced. Sensational! It's Poe though so should one really expect anything else?

Anyway, I had no idea this book even existed. I was made aware of it by another Poe fan who remarked that it was her favorite by him so I decided to settle in for a read and I'm sure glad that I did.

This is not a five minute read, like much of his poetry and short stories. But it is not full length either. Take your time with it and have fun.

As I said books on treasure hunts? Usually, they're not for me. However, I have a rule. That rule is there are a few, but a few, authors whose works I will read no matter WHAT they're about and Poe is one of them.

To date, I do not think I've ever rated anything by him under a four. And he has so much work I still haven't read. The Gold Bug was, until recently, one of those books.

My eyes sparkle, thinking of all the Poe ahead of me, waiting for me to read. Such a writer he was!

I must also comment that the woman who made me aware of this story has since passed.
She was an activist besides having exceptional reading taste. RIP Miranda.

As you are likely expecting, I am recommending this!

"It may well be doubted whether human ingenuity can construct an enigma ... which human ingenuity may not... resolve".

The Gold Bug tells the adventure of Mr. William Legrand, a recluse and entomologist, who finds a gold bug which eventually leads him to a buried treasure of pirates.

He had hunted down and secured, with Jupiter's assistance, a scarabaeus which he believed to be totally new, but in respect to which he wished to have my opinion on the morrow.
"And why not tonight?" I asked, rubbing my hands over the blaze, and wishing the whole tribe of scarabaei at the devil.

The narrator is very skeptical, and doesn’t believe in Legrand’s phantasmagoria. But worrying for him, he decides to help him in his quest and tries to save him from his own “madness”.

The blurb says it is a disturbing, partly horror tale: well, neither horror nor disturbing parts here. This story is about a treasure hunt and Legrand’s way of succeeding: a series of coincidences and deductions, deciphering clues and cryptanalysis.

With a great storyline and amusing narration, it is a highly entertaining story.

“Were all the jewels of Golconda awaiting me on my solution of this enigma, I am quite sure that I should be unable to earn them.”

Exactly my attitude upon exposure to most puzzles, and due to my inabilities, I am not a mystery reader or word puzzler, and this is a story for those folks.

But, Poe writes in layers of complexity, and there were other things I enjoyed here.

The build up to the mystery was good: a remote island, a question of madness, an unusual and creepy bug.

The dog played a key role in the plot, so that’s always good.

And the character of Jupiter was intriguing. A racist, offensive depiction, but the most likable character. He is loyal, funny, and essential to the success of the undertaking. And Poe gives him a name that means king of the gods.

But this is a howdunit, not a horror story, which for me was disappointing.

ಸುವರ್ಣ ಕೀಟ/ the gold bug

Storytel appನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಕಿದಾಗ e book and audio book ಎರಡೂ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳೂ ಸಿಕ್ಕವು(google provides a downloadable copy of said book but its not a very good copy) .

I went through my own little adventure in pursuit of this old classic adventures story and loved the whole experience.

Finally, humour from Poe! Sadly, most of it comes at the expense of a negro servant.

Otherwise, it's an adventure story involving a cypher. I remember the days when emails sometimes came as gibberish because of some bug (not a gold-bug, though) and one could decypher them using more or less the same methods (knowing the email probably began with 'Hello' or words to that meaning helped a lot, of course). Anyway, Poe's story was a huge inspiration for many others - writers, as well as, they say, the great cryptographer William Friedman - and it's short and entertaining, so, worth reading.

English Edition (No spoilers)
A story at seventy one pages, definitely not a short story by any stretch of literary theory. More like a good sized novella that pretty interminable as it goes on... So this is my first novel by Edgar Allan Poe after read a short story as Black Cat and I'm satisfied.
I started reading, looked at the map and focused on the secrets of the book and finally, together with the characters of the story, We went looking for the million dollar treasure.
This is a story about a man who was bitten by a gold bug and claimed that it will lead them to find hidden treasures together with his servant and his physician. I expected this book to be somewhat dark and grotesque, just like other Poe's tale as Black Cat, but it's more like an adventure/solving a mystery tale.
What sets this treasure-hunting story apart is its focus on cryptography. It's all laid out very carefully, as the structure of the cipher is slowly untangled for benefit of the reader. A little too slowly, perhaps... Yet cryptography is an interest of mine so perhaps I have the advantage over some other readers here. The subsequent discovery of solution leads to a series of clues which leads to treasure, as it so often does, and it's the kind of thing that makes the thought of treasure-hunting appealing... if you can get over the hours and hours of digging and accusations of madness, that is.
Overall, 4 stars for me.

The Gold-Bug is a masterpiece of deductive mystery story of Edgar A. Poe. The story takes place on Sullivan's Island about Captain Kidd's buried treasure and a parchment like a key, with an amazing cryptanalysis, and excellent and big final. In conclusion a book I Recommend.

I read THE GOLD-BUG after being told it was one of five mystery stories written by Edgar Allan Poe. Frankly, I'm surprised that this one was included. For me, it was more of an adventure tale ... and, of course, adventures often have elements of the unknown about them. But, the mystery here involves cryptography to decipher a treasure map. Yes, that means there is a puzzle-solving element to it. But, would you call Robert L. Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND a mystery?

Well, I'm likely being caught up in semantics.

The story involves a character who develops eccentric behavior after capturing an insect known as the gold bug. (Poe's puckish sense of humor cannot avoid having him ... literally ... bitten by the gold bug.) Granted, after the main narrative is completed, there is an extensive section dedicated to how the details of the treasure map were deciphered. If a Reader wanted to participate in the problem-solving, Poe (through a character) walks through the steps. It would be possible to stop reading at any point and review the information previously provided to attempt a solution.

On the whole, I found THE GOLD-BUG to be engaging, although modern Readers will likely find a stereotypical racist portrayal to be quite offensive. The resolution was satisfying, yet I had no feeling of having completed a mystery when I finished reading.
