The Atwood Sisters #3

The Earl She Ruined

Rate this book
Ransom Shepard, the Earl of Knighton, has never known love. When his father died tragically young, his mother refused to care for Ransom, leaving him in the care of the help as she descended into the grief of losing her husband. Abandoned by the one person who should have loved him unconditionally, Ransom chose a life as far from love as possible. The life of a rogue, and one he’s lived with smashing success.

Until Lady Alice Atwood kidnaps him in his own carriage.

Alice disappointed her father by not being born a boy while at the same time she disappointed her mother by not aspiring to be a lady. Science was easier and safer, and after her parents’ death, she attempts to finally publish the work she has labored over in secret for years. Only to be rejected by the men who guard the very field in which she had once found comfort. But it wasn’t enough to simply reject her. They also condemned her for being unnatural, an accusation for which she will no longer stand.

Determined to prove them wrong, she kidnaps the Earl of Knighton, London’s most successful rogue, and demands lessons in seduction. She will use the very field that has rejected her to once and for all banish the rejection that has haunted her.

Except she’ll soon learn there’s nothing scientific about seduction.

My Thoughts
- Interesting premise with the scientist and the rake pairing.
- I liked Ransom and Alice, individually and together.
- Again, a character psychology-driven romance, so personally, I loved it.
- Little to no steam for a seduce me theme.
- The ending needed more fleshing out. It ended abruptly, especially for a series closure.

The H was quite likeable, a rogue with principles. The h was nothing special or… better…. Was again one of this super special 19tj century girl who should have got a Phd in a science or the other but the society did not allow it.
Ok I am all for woman rights and I feel for how many beautiful women’s mind have been disregarded for centuries however I am also bored to find more and more h who are the copy paste of one another.
The trope could be called the nerd’s revenge and they are all so predictable even in the feeling of the characters that I finish only by sheer willpower.

So authors please take a break from scientist heroines!

"The look Ransom gave her then was not one of only love. It was one of pride, one of happiness, one of expectation, one of knowing, and it was so much more than she had ever dreamed."

Absolutely a 5 star read. This book was funny, deep, steamy, has wonderful side characters, and one of my all time favorite couples. I adore Ransom and Alice as much if not more than Eliza and Dax from Duke and the Wallflower (if you've been following my page you know that is QUITE an achievement).

Alice is a strong, intelligent FMC with relatable insecurities. She is capable and SNARKY in the best ways. I repeatedly found myself fist pumping at her sass. Ransom is a rogue with a heart of gold, who truly understands and supports Alice for her analytical, scientific nature and it MELTED me. I loved watching their relationship develop rather than having insta love, and their support of each other was perfect.

Even if you haven't read the other two Atwood Sisters books yet (which you should), Absolutely read The Earl She Ruined!

The book starts with humorous interactions between the h and h. These poor sister girls were really messed up in the head. Between society and useless parents, they have some off the cuff ideas regarding how they, life, men, society are supposed to be. This youngest sister decides to figure it out scientifically since she has no other frame of reference.

This final book in the series was a bit more steamy than the other 2. Not semi-porno steamy but “ahh they’re falling in love steamy” in a nice way.

Then, wait….. what just happened? I was liking this dude then he reverted to being 6 (years old) - WHAT!!!

Just a little hook at the end!! But a HEA for everyone - family, friends, lovers and soon to be lovers ❤️

I liked this one the best of the series. Ok this one gave me a thought of reading this author again.

5 Stars ✨✨✨✨✨

Finding herself

I absolutely loved Alice’s and Ransoms story. She never thought she was good enough and hid behind bland clothes, hair tight in a bun and clear spectacles.
Ransom only wanted the approval of his mother who left him after his fathers death neatly 30 yrs ago. How can these 2 see that not only are they made for each other but they deserve love.
A beautifully written story story with a wonderful ending.

Sensible and romantic

We were allowed to escape from the common themes normally found in the books covering this period. To be presented with likable convincing lovers was heartwarming.

Heroine: Alice Atwood, about 20. Daughter of the Earl of Biggleswade (deceased).

Hero: Ransom Shepard, early 30s? Earl of Knighton. His father died and his mother abandoned him as a young child.

Date: 1870s? (hero was born in 1842)

How they meet: Alice and Ransom met in book 2 at the wedding of her sister and his best friend.

What happens: Alice is a scientist and wants to do an experiment involving Ransom, so she “abducts” him in order to have a conversation with him. He’s a notorious rogue and Alice wants him to seduce her so she can study how it works. Alice argues she’ll never marry and he counters that he has to be attracted to someone to want to seduce them. She decides to look elsewhere for help and exits the carriage they are riding in. Concerned for her safety as it is night, Ransom follows her and they argue some more. Ransom then is assaulted by a would-be mugger, and Alice comes to his rescue. The sequence of events reveals the chemistry between them and Ransom decides he needs to steer clear of her.

Verdict: This is the third book in the series, and in my opinion was the least interesting. The heroine was academically intelligent, but somewhat clueless socially. The hero was a bit more interesting, but then when he ghosted the heroine, it felt completely out of character. He should have been honorable enough to communicate his change of heart to the heroine--after all he sincerely seemed to care for her and was bound to cross paths with her again. When the barrier between them was cleared, the heroine was extremely quick to forgive, probably too quick given the situation. Overall, I just didn’t connect with these characters and didn’t think they behaved consistently. This book overlaps in time with book 2 of the series. There were a couple scenes in book 2 involving this hero and heroine that I was interested to see from their perspective, but they were not even alluded to in this book. Even with the time and character overlap, I do think this could be read as a standalone.

Steam level: some steam and moderately explicit

Alice is a very unusual woman, she has brains and an itch to be seduced

Alice comes from an unusual background, gentile polite society where it is a no no for a Lady to be known for being intelligent. So she hides behind a screen. Pulled back hair, plain gowns and glasses she doesn’t need, but she is tired of being thought strange and wants to find out about emotion and wants to be seduced. So she goes to a Rogue and asks to-be seduced. This is where a great story come in. Interesting and fun so come be warmed by a great story.

Alice kidnaps the Earl and asks him a question

Alice and Ransom are quite well developed characters. He has issues that started in childhood and she has issues that her father and mother wanted in her birth. They had wanted her to be a son and always considered her to be the child they wanted. Alice therefore has experienced her mother and father ignoring band criticizing her.

Outstanding

What an amazing way to an series..

The heroes were flawed and so were the heroines.

This has been an emotional yet fun loving series. I'm glad I started with this series from Jessie because of the sisters despite their inner struggles from childhood trauma became stronger and more independent but not so independent that they didn't see that they couldn't find love and happiness in the end.

I definitely plan to look into more from this author.

This book wasn't bad, and it was nice to revisit the other characters in the series, but it really didn't stick to the "seduction lessons" premise. I also thought the conflict was a little thin. The thing that got in between the hero and heroine in the latter half of the book felt kind of superficial. I did like the heroine's interest in science and how it framed her perception of things.

I loved this book. Have read all in the series and enjoyed all. This follows the theme of how females were considered a poor second to males. No brains, too sensitive, I’m sure you follow my drift. We also have a damaged hero and together the two eventually find happiness despite bigots and managing mamas.

3.5, rounding up. This book had a lot of promise, although it was fairly slow for the first half of the book. What killed it for me was the unnecessary obstacle thrown in at the 11th hour, which made the hero look weak and spineless, and wasn’t even fleshed out well. Otherwise, I enjoyed the MCs and their interactions.

My favorite in the series. I loved the character development, the flow, and the secondary characters. I liked both Alice and Ransom as well as their story. I will say, I don't know if a rated it a five based on how much I enjoyed this installment of the series vs the other two reads. Next time, I will read this book independently of the first two as it can stand alone.

I absolutely loved this book. I believe that the storyline is the best of all . Alice and Ran some are wonderfully complete characters as is their story. The love scenes are not overwhelming, sensitive and a true representation of both characters. Jessie Clever wrote na fabulous book.

This author has an unparalleled way of bringing two broken souls together to heal each other while making you feel every hurt, and every hope they feel along the way. She made me cry and she made me laugh. This series will stay with me for a very long while.

My favorite of the series…

The way Ransom cared for Alice, encouraged her was lovely. And how Alice connected and understood him - so sweet. The stuff with his mother was weird though.

3.5 stars. I should reread this when I’m more focus because I don’t know if it was my brain is too distracted these days or the book. The emotions were gray but something felt off about the story pacing. Maybe because there wasn’t enough conflict/tension

This was my favorite of the series. Alice was such a daring and brave young lady. She was so daring she brought a rogue earl to his knees. Ransom was the perfect partner for Alice and I really enjoyed this book and series.
