5 “no one else would do” stars

I’ve been in a really big funk and I have only read two 5 stars books since May, so I was really blinsided by how much I loved this book. I was expecting to like it but I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with this book. I really loved this book. I loved how everything in the story happened, it was such a nice pace and I was really into it.
This book felt like a really realistic relationship and the characters were really realistic and i’m a sucker for both of those things in romance books. And it was really hot, which I also adore.
I’ve often talked about how I wish I could find a low angst book that would be all I wanted, a low angst book that still had a lot of conflict and characters with issues … well I finally found it.
Brief Summary
Parker and Simon were on the same football team and Simon was jealous of Parker because he seemed to have everything and everything came easy to him. One day they’re at a party and Simon catches Parker kissing Simon’s ex-girlfriend, they get into a fight and because of it, Simon looses his scholarship and his spot on the football team. They match on a dating app without knowing who the other is and they start flirting and being interested in each other.
Just a side note, Parker is pansexual and Simon is bisexual. I feel like it’s worth mentioning and I prefer those dynamics to gay for you on most days, so I was pleased.
First, this is marketed as enemies to lovers but it’s really one sided and mostly just comes from a misunderstanding. Simon had a lot of resentment for Parker and what happened, which makes sense. Parker on the other end was sad that Simon wasn’t on the team anymore and fought for him. So Simon saw Parker as a rival but Parker saw Simon as someone cool who was good at football. But the rivalty aspect really worked for me. Simon was bitter and really not a fan of Parker and it took me a long time to warm up to Parker, which I loved.
Side note, I really appreciated how Simon didn’t like Parker and resented him but Parker had been crushing on Simon for a long time, I loved that dynamic.
Second, lower angst books with conflict are my cat nip, I love them, so much. And this exactly that. It was low angst, but it dealt with resentment, Simon resented Parker for costing him what he loved, Simon resented Parker for not wanting to play Football when all wanted Simon wanted to do was play, Simon was going through a tough time and was hurt and we were shown that and we were shown Simon struggling and how he wasn’t happy with his life and there was Parker who’s parents wanted him to play Football and who he didn’t want to disapoint by stopping. All of that mashed up to a really enjoyable reading experience for me. I love books who deal with these type of inner conflict, so much.
Third, I love when people meet online. I love reading about online interactions. So I was really pleased that there was a lot of it in this book. I loved how important the dating app was to the story. They spent a really long period of the book chatting on the dating app and got to know each other and I loved reading about it.
Fourth, I really enjoyed how both of the character’s lives weren’t perfect. Simon was sad and lonely and was really bitter at the world. He was having a hard time and who was lost and didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere after losing football. And Parker was sad and felt alone and didn’t really enjoy his life, he wanted to change a lot of things. They both had doubts and fears. I much prefer reading about characters who feel realistic than ones who have perfect lives, so I really enjoyed it.
Side note, I loved how Simon spent a big part of the book fighting between wanting to hate Simon and being attracted to Simon. It was lovely to read about and felt so realistic considering how much he resented Simon.
Fifth, the relationship progression in this book was so good. I loved how they took time to get to know each other because they got to the sex part, it made a lot of sense with who they were at characters and it was really lovely to read about them getting to know each other on the dating app before finally meeting up in real life. These guys had an insane amount of chemistry because they spent a lot of time getting to know each other and it was lovely to read about. The love these two had for each other was radiating off the page and it was so lovely to see. Also, I loved how they both didn’t know if the other would be into them and how they worried about how the other felt, it was so realistic. Also, I adored how it was awkward between them at first (when they met up outside of the dating app) and they had to get used to being around each other. It worked perfectly with who they were as characters.
Sixth, I love sexual exploration in books and there was some really good exploration in this book. If was perfect sexual exploration we got to see every first time Simon had with a guy and we got to see Parker bottom for the first time and we got to see Simon bottom for the first time. Also, I loved how Simon was full of wander and how fascinated he was at how good sex was with Parker, it was so lovely to read about. There was some quality sexting in this and I was all here for it. It was so hot. And the sex scenes in this book were damn hot and I loved them. Also their interactions during sex were awkward and they didn’t know what to do at first and I loved that so much. I do wish there was more sex scenes though, but thats just a me problem.
Seventh, this book had a lot of talks about athletes and what they did after their career was about and how to approach the end of your career and I really loved reading about that. I loved seeing how lost Simon was because he never thought of a career after football and how he didn’t know what to do now that he didn’t have footbal anymore. And I loved how Parker starting to resent Football because it wasn’t really what he wanted in life, but it made his parents happy.
Eight, I loved how all Parker wanted was someone he could connect with, it was so sweet to read about. He was pining for a relationship and someone to be there for him and it was nice to read about instead of all the typical main characters who play football who are always against relationships.
Ninth, for a big part of the book, they were both in the closet and they were meant to be rival so they could only be together for some short little moments and I loved how much they were both pining for time with the other.
Tenth, there was a lot of conflict in this book because Parker had Football but wanted to give it up and Simon didn’t have Football anymore and he would have done everything to keep playing and I just loved that so much. It was a realistic conflict and it never was over the top, it just made sense and it was so realistic. Relationships are never going to be perfect and I loved how this book showed that.
Side note, I loved how they didn’t always understand the other’s choice but they were still there for them and supported each other. That felt so realistic and I was so into it.
Eleventh, i’m probably the only person ever who cries at a low angst college romance book but damn did I cry at the last 20% of this book. I was so invested in the characters that I couldn’t help but cry.
Twelth, If I had one complaint about the book it would be that i’m a big music fan and Simon worked at a bar where they had bands playing and he described a band as a “punk metal nightmare” and I just really want to know how a band can be both punk and metal at the same time lol

enemies to lovers is my weakness and it doesn't even have to be full on ETL where the hatred on both sides is present but, even if it's just one sided, i still love it bc of the banters and bickering and this lived up to it. 🥺 i loved Simon and Parker's connection. gotta love stories where they're rivals irl but somehow, by fate, meet online on a random hook up app and they have this instant connection, without discovering until later they already know each other irl. 😌 i was honestly kinda scared this would go in a direction where they would have a constant push and pull (which gets annoying for me if it's repetitive throughout the book) once all is revealed so im happy that wasn't the case and we get so many cute moments between them, along with steamy ones as well. 🤍
im not sure if i wanna read book one bc, although Cooper and Trace were kinda cute from the small glimpses we've seen, 'daddy kink' isn't really a fav trope of mine. i am, however, excited for Rhett/Ethan's book!! roommate romances tend to be really cute imo and they definitely caught my eye here. 👀

My issue with Matched by My Rival was the writing, it felt a little bit light? Like it touched on the subjects in a very careless way, it didn't have depth, it was like peeping from a door to the situations and the feelings. Hence, I couldn't connect, it was cute yes but it could have been more.
The beginning was fine, the middle was a little bit wtf, I didn't see how they went from hate to love, like I could read it but the feelings weren't there, it was just said and some conflicts were unnecessary? But it was cute, so don't mind me much. 🤷🏻♀️🤭❤

He really was and it was actually a pretty funny endeavor. *lolll
I heard that this is similar in a lot of ways to Top Secret (one of my early MM faves) and they were right. The basics of the romance are pretty much the same - two college dudes hate each other’s guts but meet without knowing, anonymously on a hookup app, become sort of friends and fell in lust with each other until that big moment of reveal who the guy on the other side of the screen truly is. Followed by explorative sexy-times as one of them is with a guy for the first time and keeping it casual and a secret for most of the book while developing deeper feelings along the way.
It was hard not to compare the two. But evidently I did. Not as much but I did liked this one too. Parker and Simon were cute. I guess they will not end up being particularly memorable to me but I enjoyed their story for the time being, esp bc of the audio. Nick J Russo did a great job with it and I’m curious about the next book in the series.

Take scenes/phrases, etc. from every other college athlete enemies romance book, mash them all together and you have this book. 😁

This is fab, it's just the right kind of mix between light-hearted college age banter and that feeling when you know your life is changing forever.
It's also a brilliant enemies to frenemies to lovers romance that works through all the stages at an excellent pace and never feels rushed.
Simon and Parker are both distinct characters with unique voices and I loved how DJ had them almost mirroring each other's expectations of where they thought the other one's life was going.
It's also hot, one of the hottest books that DJ has written imho because even from the off, its more than just the lust of getting off.
They've had a connection from the start, even when Simon was drunkenly punching Parker after he thought he was stealing his girlfriend.
The hookup app trope that's connecting all thus series together works really well too, as they get to know each other through anonymous conversations.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and make sure you grab the deleted scene too because that's smoking too!

soooo…. i liked it. i wasn’t gagging with excitement and enjoyment when i was reading this but overall still a fun time. the truest form of saving grace is how i was a bit invested with the story. i love how this book is just one big contradiction. a romance story labeled as a sports romance when it’s not really a sports romance. i appreciate the ‘sports is not life’ that went on though. it was okay for me. serviceable.

I thought I was getting a simple and fluffy enemies to lovers book and ended up with a surprisingly thoughtful and slightly angsty story.
I’m not sure why, but I thought this would be pure fluff and overly dramatic. I wasn’t expecting much more than an easy book to read during my breaks in my day. I was definitely wrong. While there are cheesy moments, I definitely don’t classify them as fluffy and they’re not very often. There was some light angst, but nothing over the top and our MCs communicate! I can’t tell you how much communication in books does it for me.
Our two MCs are enemies in the beginning. Well…one thinks they’re enemies and the other just wants his attention anyway he can get it. There’s a big horrible incident that is life changing, but it actually doesn’t take up much time like I thought it would (based on the blurb). The way these two get together was believable and lovely. The chemistry is off the charts and every sex scene was hot.
I really love when characters feel real and both these guys did. I wasn’t a fan of the side characters because they felt like afterthoughts, but our main guys were fleshed out. They had thoughts and feelings that were relatable. We get a good glance at their inner dialogues, but it stops short of being too much and I appreciate that. I don’t love being told things all the time and want to see them on page. It’s a delicate balance of telling and showing, which this author did well here.
I haven’t read the first book in the series, but I recommend this one!

Simon is bisexual and in the closet. Parker Reed is a golden boy—rich, good looking and naturally talented at football. He’s laidback and doesn’t have to work hard to play well. Parker is pansexual and in the closet.

A: Simon is the starting wide receiver on the college football team, but Parker is nipping hard at his heels when injuries put Simon out of commission, giving Parker the opportunity to step into his shoes. What I like about their relationship is that Parker is always honest about his feelings and willing to make the effort to get their relationship going, and keep it going whenever Simon gets skittish. Parker doesn’t play games. He’s affectionate and vulnerable and exactly what Simon needs to break through his walls.

“You probably like me suffering, huh?”
He rolled onto his side to look at me. “Nah. That ship has sailed.” He lowered his lips to my ear. “Now, I like you moaning.”
Enemies-to-lovers is my favourite trope, especially in the fantasy genre. Sadly, most of the time I tried to read a contemporary story with this trope I ended up feeling like something was missing. But lately, after too many dark books, I wanted something light to read. And that was when I came across this blurb.
The “enemies” part didn’t last long, Simon and Parker’s personalities made it that way. While Simon was quite an overthinker and a little bit of a pessimist, Parker’s attitude toward life was the opposite. So, all the misunderstandings between them were quickly solved.
At one point, I was afraid this was going into the insta-love field but, luckily, that didn't happen. By the way, I found all their chats hilarious and really hot. But what I liked the most was that it wasn't just sexting, you could tell how slowly they started caring for each other.
Two teammates with different goals. If you love enemies-to-lovers but aren't in the mood for too much drama, this is the book for you. Can be read as a standalone, but I'm really curious about the previous book and the next one!

This is a perfect example of a story with a great premise having a boring execution due to the author not coming up with enough interesting plotlines. Some of that was likely due to the enemies-to-lovers setup being lackluster. In fact - asides from the virtual relationship development, everything else about the story was lackluster.
One of the disappointments I encountered early was the discovery that the MCs were never truly enemies. Parker likes Simon from the start and the only reason Simon dislikes Parker is because the latter is a talented football player who's threatening to take Simon's position on the college football team. Having Simon be jealous of Parker was a good starting point but it wasn't nearly enough to make them enemies. In order to increase the animosity between them, the author decided to include a nonsensical sequence of . The entire situation was stupid, manufactured drama and I expected something a lot better.
Another forced plot direction was how Simon reacted after finding out his anonymous sexting buddy is Parker. The whole thing made me roll my eyes because it reminded me of the contrived and forced plotlines used in porn movies. The author obviously thought the MCs having angry sex was hot and thus, it had to happen even if it didn't fit with the MCs motivations or personalities.
The other problem is that the story is mind numbingly boring and the pace moves way too slowly. Every single scene is slowed down due to the inclusion of pointless details, irrelevant side characters and irrelevant conversations. Since Parker and Simon don't like each other and Simon is booted from the football team at the start, the MCs spent much of their time apart. While that made sense and it allowed the anonymous hook-up app relationship to build between them, it didn't make sense for the author to go all in with describing everything that happened to the MCs when they weren't together.
Some examples:
+ We get an in-depth description of one of Simon's sports leadership classes, including a description of the professor (physical appearance, backstory etc), her interaction with a random student, excessive detail about an assignment that she's giving Simon and a long monologue by the prof where she lectures about how important the ethics behind that assignment is.
+ We get another scene where the MC goes out to eat breakfast with a bunch of side characters and the author lists every side characters drink.
+ There's the thrilling scene where Parker and the guys are working out at the gym and we get extensive details about what exercises Parker is doing, how long he does them for and what he thinks about the exercises.
Simon wasn't immune to boring filler material dragging out his scenes either because there are way too many references about his sister wanting to go to culinary school and there's a long scene where the sister is droning on and on about not knowing if she wants to go to culinary school since it's expensive and she'd have to leave her kid at home for the year. What the hell did any of this have to do with the MCs romance?? Answer: nothing. The author just wanted to fill as many pages as possible so they'd make more money on KU.
The part where I DNF'd was the end of Chapter 13 because half the chapter consisted of Parker attending a family birthday (complete with excessive details about the very hyper young birthday girl) and the other half was Simon at his charity's construction worksite where we get descriptions of them painting the house and chit-chatting. The MCs have one short text conversation and one longer text conversation in the entire chapter and the rest of it is boring, pointless filler material.
Overall, none of this worked for me. This was my first book by this author and I'm not excited to check out anything else. It's too bad because I love sports romance as well as ones where the MCs begin their relationship through an anonymous virtual method, but this one was a boring fail on nearly every level.

Meh.

Two wide receivers walking back from the stadium holding hands after a game? A former player waiting by the team door with a bouquet of candy for his teammate lover? Too sweet to be true.
The story had loads of potential. But the sex scenes were mailed in, and the alternating first-person narrators never sounded like males, let alone jocks.

I loved this book. It had to be one of my favorite enemies to lovers book ever. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars was the ever repetitive inner monologue about how they felt. I hear it once I’m good. I don’t need to hear the same thing 10 times. It’s still a great book.

Avoiding each other seems impossible how hard Simon tries.
Both question themselves about their sexuality, not straight... gay, bi, pan? Either it’s secretly.
Simon chats with a guy on a dating app, he doesn’t know who he is but they connect real good.
So much better than the guy he hates, Parker!
Parker doesn’t like it that Simon hates him, and for the wrong reasons. An app to chat and hook up seems the solution to get off with someone.
Love and hate are both strong emotions. Parker and Simon are familiar with it.
They collide more than once. They are somewhat inexperienced, experimenting with each other, exploring their attraction does them good. It’s all secretly, and it’s getting harder to keep it that way.
This author always writes great stories I love. This one did it a tiny bit lesser for me. It had a slow-paced and build-up. I couldn’t full-heartedly connect at first. The further in the story the better it got for me.
A story with a bit of enemies to friends to lovers, steamy moments, somewhat emotional at times, two sweet lovable guys, with a lot of people around them.

Simon Prentiss ha dovuto rinunciare al football dopo una serie di sfortunati eventi che si sono andati a sommare, l’hanno reso frustrato e l’hanno fatto agire in modo… avventato, facendo sì che gli togliessero la borsa di studio e lo espellessero dalla squadra di football.
A fare le spese della sua rabbia è stato Parker Reed, suo compagno di squadra e rivale, con cui non ha mai avuto un gran rapporto.
I due, infatti, non sono mai stati capaci di sopportarsi troppo, ma la vita li costringerà a interagire e a capire se possono, per lo meno, essere amici.

Enemies to lovers is, in my opinion, one of those tropes that is hard to balance well. Sometimes the chemistry haze leaves nothing in common between the chatacters. Sometimes it tips from one to the other way too fast to feel genuine. This one is, in my opinion, a prime example of the trope made right.
Simon and Parker start with a (un)healthy dose of rivalry, which culminates in a big fight thag leaves Simon without his sport and Parker without his motivation. Seeing them come to learn to love what they have, what they want, and each other, is a delightful experience.
I wish we'd had a settled conclusion like the one in the last book, but knowing not only that there's ways to go in their lives (and an extra book to come) does lift my spirits.
Simon and Parker start with a (un)healthy dose of rivalry, which culminates in a big fight thag leaves Simon without his sport and Parker without his motivation. Seeing them come to learn to love what they have, what they want, and each other, is a delightful experience.

While this is book 2, it works as a standalone. I didn't read book 1 and picked everything up okay. I think it also ties into the Love Notes series but again they aren't necessary reading.
I loved the push and pull between the 2 mc's but the actual rivalry was over pretty quickly and they settled into a lot of sweet and sexy times before half way.
I fully expected the late on drama but it wasn't bad, it fit the plot and was over with quickly.
Simon and Parker complimented each other and brought it out the best in the them.
I'm glad I picked this up

This was a step up from the first one. While the first one was good and enjoyable, especially once I got to the second half, this had my attention throughout almost all of it, and I enjoyed these two, Simon and Parker a little more than the first book couple.
It did drag for around 10-15% near the beginning, hence my .5 stars off. It's just when these two weren't interacting face to face, in person, and we're only interacting on the thrust app, that it got slow for me. Idk what it is with this author, but when the characters aren't with each other, interacting face to face, for a good chunk of the book, it's just slow as molasses for me. I just don't think the author makes it exciting when the main couple isn't together in person.
Thankfully for this book, it wasn't basically half the book, and was only a small chunk of it, hence me giving this 4.5 stars and rounding up.
Because aside from that slow chunk, I enjoyed this a lot, and I enjoyed these two together. There was element of rivalry, but mainly just on Simon's part. Things were different for Parker.
And I loved seeing Simon get to know Parker for who he is and now who he thought he was, and was able to see what a sweet and kind person Parker is. That was the most delicious part of this, when Simon's assumptions about Parker were proven absolutely wrong.
These two had great chemistry too. They just clicked together and I enjoyed them together so much.
While this took longer for me to read because of that slow stretch, overall before that and after, this was a fun and engaging read for me.
I would definitely recommend this, and as a second try with this author for me, I do have to say I'll definitely give this author a chance with further books. I'd definitely be interested in reading more by this author.

Ding, Ding, Ding, now this was an awesome surprise. Judging from the blurb, I thought the book had a plot similar to many MM rival sports romance books but actually, the characters, storyline and treatment brought a uniqueness to it.
Simon and Parker, both play as 'receivers' for the Hayworth. But they have opposite backgrounds and temperaments. Simon is an injury-prone senior that allowed Parker a better chance to play and prove himself this season. Then, a misunderstanding and an act of lost temper cost Simon his scholarship and his position in the team. The rift between Simon and Parker widened till they met again for a building project for the Frat.
The enemy phase was short and mostly one-sided since Parker always found Simon drool-worthy and intense.😂😂 But since they had completely different personalities and approach towards life, the dislike was understandable.
The relationship development was sweet during the online phase then it became steamy. But the little insecurities of MCs gave us enough angst that the book didn't end up becoming too fluffy. Plus, I loved how they both struggled with keeping their relationship a secret and finding new places to snatch few minutes here and there.😌😌
Both Simon and Parker were pretty likeable characters but I loved Parker more. He had an amazing sense of humour and was so patient with Simon. And, his ability to start laughing at most inappropriate times was so amusing(Interestingly, my husband has the same habit but I find that infuriating).😂😂 I also felt that the author handled Simon's initial experience as Bi quite well. Plus, we got a lot of conversations regarding the future from MCs and that gave us a peek into their College life. Normally, some authors write about college life as if they have never experienced one.😏😏
Altogether, the story was so engaging and well-paced that I am not even going to complain about the lack of adrenaline-inducing soccer matches.😂😂

Both Simon and Parker were pretty likeable characters but I loved Parker more. He had an amazing sense of humour and was so patient with Simon. And, his ability to start laughing at most inappropriate times was so amusing(Interestingly, my husband has the same habit but I find that infuriating).😂😂 I also felt that the author handled Simon's initial experience as Bi quite well. Plus, we got a lot of conversations regarding the future from MCs and that gave us a peek into their College life. Normally, some authors write about college life as if they have never experienced one.😏😏
Altogether, the story was so engaging and well-paced that I am not even going to complain about the lack of adrenaline-inducing soccer matches.😂😂
