Jack Ludefance #4

Murder in Buckhead

Rate this book
Bechet Kaya’s book four in the Jack Ludefance series, Murder in Buckhead, follows PI Jack's all-action mysteries proceedings, resonates with the author's knotty narrative, sparkling characters, and the ever-still place of realism as to the basic human aspirations.

Buckhead, a district within Atlanta that boasts many high-end residences and businesses, is the scene of the discovery of a body. As the meticulous detective Shamir Turner assesses the circumstances of the alleged suicide of Casey Ray Olmsted, the son of the influential US Senator Bartholomew Jeremie Olmsted, he is certain of foul play (all shreds of evidence are contrary to the suicide claim). In the wake of Senator Olmsted's request not to proceed with the investigation of his son's death (since it’s a suicide), Turner has no choice but to do nothing (well, just officially...). Meanwhile, in his mid-40s, private investigator Jack Ludefance from Florida receives a phone call from Scarlet Olmsted asking him to look into the ‘real’ deed behind his son Casey's death. Blaire Olmsted, Casey's widower, issues a second exhortation, pleading with Ludefance to probe the senator (her father-in-law) who is after her life.

Amidst the seemingly well-heeled proceedings of the murder-mystery investigation, Ludefance makes some unexpected discoveries about the case that goes against his reasoning. Blaire puzzles him with her switch between slyly seductive innuendos and her innocent persona, genuinely concerned about the senator and the threats he makes (a devious diva or an innocent suspect?). Additionally, not only has Blaire become a thorn in the motive of concealing the true story behind Casey's death, but Jack has also become part of the follow-ups and death threats. In a bind, Ludefance must deal with two situations that both get in the way of the corrupt and wicked Senator, who believes in getting rid of any weeds that might stand in the way of his objectives. With Rudy, the young expert hacker, Turner, the ever-ardent detective, and many incidental characters on board, the plot follows Jack’s adventure to unravel the mysterious death of Casey – suicide or murder, or is there an entirely different angle to the case?

Through the luxury settings of Atlanta, the criminal underworld, and (not to overlook) the various eateries and human basic appetites for delicacies and meals, the author weaves an interesting tale that goes beyond a mere murder mystery riddle. All of the characters reveal their true selves in their own sexuality, backgrounds, and social positions, whether expressing natural human passion, appetite, or wrestling with their inner conflicts. Despite being a minor force behind the propagation of the murder mystery, the plot's plethora of characters, including Rudy with his subtle fatherly relationship with Jack, Cindy, Jack's sexual interest, as well as Turner and County Sheriff Lawson (aka Hiker), the ideal professionals and boon companions, provide enrichment to the plot with their unique presence and personalities.

Behcet Kaya is the author of nine novels. His first literary fiction novel, Voice of Conscience, follows, to some extent, his own life experiences. His second novel, Murder on the Naval Base is a fast-paced who-done-it, his recently published third novel, Road to Siran, Erin’s Story is the eagerly awaited sequel to Voice of Conscience and the fourth Treacherous Estate is a crime thriller and the fifth Body in the Woods, Appellant Judge. Murder in Buckhead, Uncanny Alliance, Deception.

Born in northeastern Turkey, Behcet grew up in a very small village with long held traditions. His rebellious nature emerged at an early age and by time he was ten, he had read, in secret, all the Turkish translated stories of Mike Hammer. In addition, he read several of Dale Carnage’s works, and all of Yashar Kemal’s novels. His world burst out beyond that of his small village and he yearned for a more western way of life.

Defying his father, Behcet left home at fourteen and travelled first to Istanbul and then on to London. His obsession was to complete his high school education and then a college degree in engineering. He supported himself by working full-time and earning scholarships from Inner London Education Authority. His creative side began emerging when his drama and literature teacher cast him in a play in which his performance awed the audience. His insatiable appetite for literature widened to include the classics of Dickens, D.H. Laurence, and the Russian masters.

While at Hatfield Polytechnic, Behcet made his first visit to the US as an exchange student with the British Universities North American Club. He made the move to the US in 1976 and became a US citizen in 1985. While living in Atlanta, Georgia he followed his creative yearnings and attended the Alliance Theatre School and studied at the SAG Conservatory of Georgia, which earned him his Screen Actors Guild card. In 1994, Kaya and his wife moved to Los Angeles, where he continued his studies at the Roby Theatre Company and the Shakespeare, A Noise Within, Theatre Workshop.

In the soon to be released movie, “Being American” starring Lorenzo Lamas, Behcet plays the part of a Turkish Defense Minister.

Along with acting, writing became a natural outlet. In addition to his three novels, Voice of Conscience, Murder on the Naval Base, and Road to Siran, Erin’s Story, Treacherous Estate, Body in the Woods, appellate Judge and Murder in Buckhead will be published in 2022. Behcet has published numerous short stories and is currently working on his fourth novel, Body in the Woods.

Unraveling a mysterious murder riddle

California author Behçet Kaya is also known by his stage name as an actor Ben Kaya (`Fast Food', `The Practice', `Being American' on film and numerous roles on the legitimate stages such as The Noise Within). Whether it is the fallout of thinking though a storyline or actually taking on the role of a fictional character, the result in the case of Behçet Kaya heightens the verismo as is evident in his short stories and his novels VOICE OF CONSCIENCE, MURDER ON THE NAVAL BASE, ROAD TO SIRAN: ERIN'S STORY, TREACHEROUS ESTATE, BODY IN THE WOODS, APPELLATE JUDGE, and now MURDER IN BUCKHEAD. True, his background of having been born and raised in a small village in Turkey, secretly consuming the exemplary works of the Turkish writer of Kurdish origin Yaşar Kemal, his subsequent rebellious flight to Istanbul and London, compelled and succeeding to earn a degree in engineering, his successful introduction to the stage while attending the inner London Education Authority and his subsequent move to the United States where he gained citizenship and worked successfully to achieve his Screen Actors Guild card after studies in Georgia, and then moving to Los Angeles to embrace both his acting ambitions and writing skills - all of this is the progress of a man committed to his art - and it shows.

Having experienced the pleasure of reading six of Behçet’s seven novels, it is comfortable to share that his gifts multiply with each book – especially his Jack Ludefance PI series, of which this is Book 4. Georgia is the setting for this episode, and Behçet describes Atlanta well, as PI Jack is called to investigate a questionable suicide vs. murder of a Senator’s son – and the interactions of all the myriad characters (including the widow of the deceased, the criminal underworld, a sexual alliance for Jack, etc) spin out a fascinating riddle that only Jack Ludefrance can (and does) solve.

Behçet Kaya's style of writing captures the essence of ‘mysteries,’ giving the reader a sense of place and tenor like few other writers are capable of achieving. He is obviously one of our more important writers of the times and his niche in literature is secure. Highly recommended on every level.

Reading Murder in Buckhead by Behcet Kaya, was a journey through the intricate layers of human nature and crime. From the moment the body was discovered in Buckhead, the book captivated me with its intense narrative. Jack Ludefance, a private investigator from Florida, brought a refreshing depth to the tale, making each twist and turn more compelling.

The atmosphere of Buckhead, with its high-end residences and complex characters, added a rich backdrop to the mystery.

The subplot involving Rudy, the young hacker, and the relentless pursuit of justice enhanced the narrative, creating a well-rounded and engaging story. The vivid descriptions of Atlanta's luxurious settings and the darker criminal underworld were seamlessly woven into the plot, offering a glimpse into both the opulence and the grittiness of the city.

In conclusion, the novel’s intricate plot, rich character development, and unexpected twists made Murder in Buckhead a gripping read that stayed with me long after I turned the last page.

I honestly didn’t expect to get pulled in the way I did. Murder in Buckhead starts like a standard PI mystery — dead body, powerful family, threads waiting to be pulled — but about halfway through, I realized I wasn’t just flipping pages for the plot. I wanted to know what kind of man Jack Ludefance really is, and how far down he’d follow this thing before it broke him.
The setup’s intense: Casey Olmsted is found dead in a high-end Atlanta neighborhood, and everyone insists it’s a suicide… except nothing adds up. The cops are stuck, the senator dad wants it buried, and in comes Jack, dragging his Florida PI instincts into a mess that turns out to be so much worse than he expected.
I kind of loved how claustrophobic it got. Not in a trapped-in-a-room sense, but more like—every time Jack tries to get clarity, someone else throws fog in his face. Especially Blaire. Ugh, Blaire. I couldn’t decide if I liked her or wanted her written out of the story, which is probably exactly what the author wanted. One minute she’s vulnerable and real, the next she’s twisting words and leading Jack into another trap. Seductive? Maybe. Dangerous? Absolutely. And yet… I kept wanting her scenes to come back around.
What stood out most wasn’t even the central murder — it was the texture of everything. The food descriptions, the little digs into Jack’s personal history, the weird camaraderie with Rudy (who I’d happily read a spinoff about, by the way). Even Turner, the detective who’s basically boxed out of his own case, had depth. You could feel his frustration under the surface like a pot about to boil over. And Lawson (aka Hiker) cracked me up more than once.
Okay, confession: there were maybe two or three scenes where the pacing got a little scrambled. Like, we’re barreling toward some new clue and then suddenly Jack’s sidetracked in a conversation about food or something. It slowed things down. But weirdly, I didn’t hate it. It made the world feel lived-in, not just built for convenience.
The ending? I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say I wasn’t expecting one of the final twists. Not in a what just happenedkind of way, more like a oh no, of course it’s this kind of dread that creeps up behind you. It landed. Hard.
This is the fourth book in the Jack Ludefance series, and I came in cold, not having read the others. Didn’t matter. The voice was clear. The world made sense. And by the time I finished, I actually wanted to go back and see where this guy came from.
So yeah — it’s a solid, tangled, character-heavy mystery that’s way more about people than clues. Four and a half stars, maybe five, because I already want the next one.

Behcet Kaya does it again. Another fantastic book with a mystery that keeps you on your toes. I was ecstatic to read more about Jack’s cases as I really like his character, so it was an absolute joy to get back into the world. I won't deny that I had to look at the previous books just to remember a few points here and there, but it can easily be read as a standalone, as each book focuses on one case.

Furthermore, I especially liked the variety in characters, the detective dynamics, and, of course, all the secrets and lies that really tie the story together. One of the great things that makes a good detective story is the way the author ties all these points together while keeping the enjoyment and intrigue at an all-time high.

The intrigue begins when Casey Ray is found dead. As the son of a powerful senator, his death is quickly brushed off as a suicide. Meanwhile, even though the detective at hand suspects foul play, the senator wants him to drop it. Soon, things get more heated when Jack receives a call from Casey's widow, who is being threatened by the senator, and asks him to look into her husband's death. Jack takes on the case and needs to find out whether it really was a suicide or if something more sinister was at play. You have to read the book in order to find out what really happened!

When you pick up Murder in Buckhead, prepare to be drawn into a world where suspense and intrigue intertwine seamlessly. From the very first page, the discovery of a body in the upscale district of Buckhead sets the stage for a thrilling investigation. Private investigator Jack Ludefance will guide you through a labyrinth of secrets, lies, and unexpected twists.

The narrative's richness is evident as you explore with the darker corners of the criminal underworld. To uncover the truth, the tension will keep you hooked, eager to see how the plot unfolds.

The personalities of each characters are defined with the unique touch adding an extra layer of suspense. The characters like Rudy, the young hacker, and County Sheriff Lawson, are my favourite characters and also bring additional depth and intrigue to the story.

As you turn each page, the suspense builds, leading to shocking revelations that will leave you breathless. The interplay of human desires, ambitions, and deceptions is portrayed with a realism that makes the characters' struggles palpable.

Murder in Buckhead promises a captivating read that will keep crime and suspense lovers on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the next twist.

Murder in Buckhead by Behcet Kaya is the fourth installment in the Jack Ludefance series. In this gripping novel, private investigator Jack is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the alleged suicide of a senator's son. Simultaneously, Jack is asked to protect his widow from the senator, as she fears that her father-in-law is trying to kill her. To fulfill these daunting requests, Jack teams up with a local detective to gain the leverage he needs before calling in his secret weapon, Rudy. He realizes that while the senator wields significant power, there seems to be no limit to his malicious intentions. The stakes are high, and Jack must navigate carefully, as his job could endanger those he cares about most.

Behcet Kaya consistently surprises his readers with the development of Jack Ludefance's character, adding layers of mystique and resilience. Murder in Buckhead excels as the story unfolds, balancing the pursuit of truth with Jack's quest for love and the dangers he encounters. Every one of Kaya's books keeps me engrossed, as the plot twists and turns in unexpected ways.

Murder in Buckhead" by Behcet Kaya, is a fast-paced murder thriller set in the wealthy titular Buckhead area of Atlanta. The story takes its thrilling form when the son of a powerful senator is found dead, and the police declare suicide. The senator's daughter and daughter-in-law aren't buying this, as something seems off about it. This led them to hire private investigator Jack Ludefance, our central character, to uncover the truth. As he digs deeper, he unveils knitted secrets, which reveal lies and put him in danger. As the story progresses, it delves deeper into themes like political corruption, family betrayal, and the misfortunes of wealth.

As someone who's always been drawn to detective fiction, Murder in Buckhead by Behcet Kaya truly delivers the kind of gripping mystery I look for. It has everything—a brilliant, determined private investigator (Jack Ludefance), a high-profile suspicious death, and a tangled web of secrets waiting to be unravelled.

The characters are well-developed and align seamlessly with the main story's flow. I find that this read is not just about solving a murder—it's also about understanding the power plays, motives, and emotional torments behind it all. Especially, the setting in Atlanta's Buckhead district adds a rich and vivid backdrop to the investigation, which is further enhanced by the author's writing style.

If you're wondering whether you need to read the earlier books in the series first, I didn't, and I still followed everything easily. The story stands strong on its own, though it might spark your curiosity to go back and explore more of the detective's previous cases.

If you enjoy detective stories like me, with sharp twists, layered characters, and a touch of realism, this book is going to be a good one on your shelf.

I came across Murder in Buckhead by accident. I was actually scrolling for something else, but the cover and title made me pause. I had a weird sense it might suit my mood.

Turns out I was right. The story follows Jack Ludefance, a private investigator who seems a bit tired of the world. I liked that. It made things feel more real. He gets pulled into figuring out who killed a wealthy doctor outside a club in Atlanta. Honestly, it didn’t seem like it would surprise me much, but I kept turning pages anyway.

I think what kept me going was how normal Jack is. He doubts himself. He messes up. There’s no big action hero moment, just a guy doing his job. The writing style is calm. It kind of let me settle in. Before I knew it, I’d blown through the book over two nights.

When I finished, I sat there a minute. It wasn’t flashy, but it gave me a nice break from real life. I closed it feeling oddly content. Like I’d spent a weekend helping someone solve a problem. I’d recommend it if you want a mystery that feels grounded and has a quiet sort of pull.

Murder in Buckhead by Behcet Kaya is a well-written and multilayered thriller that puts you in the dark undercurrents of Atlanta's posh Buckhead district. Jack Ludefance, a Florida-based private investigator, quite familiar with alligators, finds himself embroiled in secrets, murder, and high-stakes deceit. This time around, Jack is dealing with a ton of complexity, but of course, it is not beyond his capabilities. Kaya's powerful and distinct writing combines richness and grime, portraying Atlanta and Buckhead in particular in vivid, dramatic detail. With the assistance of a brilliant young hacker and a no-nonsense investigator, Jack uncovers realities that twist with each chapter. While the writing is on point, the pace and plot hold your attention as you're trying to figure it all out. This is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating books in the series. It is suspenseful, intellectual, and full of surprises.

A tense and thrilling mystery that will grip you from the outset, this is one book that you don’t want to miss out. Although this is the fourth in a series, it works just fine as a standalone. Reading the previous books will give you more insight into some of the characters, but really isn’t required, as Kaya does an amazing job introducing them to you, and relaying the important information without overwhelming the reader. Jack is such a great character, multifaceted, determined, and refusing to back down no matter how intense things get as he pursues the truth and justice. I love the way the two mysteries intertwined throughout the story, and the twists came at just the right moments, throwing you off balance and keeping you hooked. Cannot recommend enough if you enjoy mysteries that get your heart racing!

This was my first book by Behcet Kaya. I enjoyed his writing style and it made me want to keep reading. For me, it was hard to connect with the main character, Jack Ludefance. In the course of a month, he slept with three women and lusted over underage girls. One of the mottos Jack tries to follow is "living in the moment." However, he didn't seem to learn his lesson after getting manipulated by Blaire and proceeded to sleep with his still married property manager, Patty, in the next breath. On the other hand, he did demonstrate some character and compassion in his relationship with his helper from California.

I would like to check out Kaya's other books in the hopes of a better main character as I did enjoy the mystery side of the book.
