This was a good start to a new series. What I liked the most is the fact that the FMC is a 40 year old divorcee trying to find her purpose in life.

After an attack that killed her mentor and left her for dead she was given a new lease on life. Being granted powers from the Goddess Artemis, Nishi is now a Hunter with supernatural abilities to be used for the sole purpose of protecting the human race.

This book has Magic, Vampires, Shifters, Faes and Witches.

Short as was promised

This was a taste of things to come and did generate interest. A mix of supernatural and the Gods and with a hero whose Japanese heritage gives her an added edge, the premise is intriguing with a strong hope that the bad guys will get what they deserve.

Nishizaka Kazuko, Nishi, for short, is descended from a samurai warrior family. Growing up in Japan, her father taught her the ways of the samurai and she values honor and her family name. Though she moved to the US to be with her, now ex, husband, she is now divorced and works on web security for private clients. She also goes to a local dojo every evening to work with Master Taniguchi to keep her skills sharp and to stop herself from becoming a recluse. On her way to the dojo one night she feels like someone is following her, but nothing happens. Then, as she and Tani are doing katas (forms), two men burst in and attack them. Tani is killed and Nishi is bitten but police sirens force the vampires to flee. Yep, vampires.

Nishi is determined to avenge Tani's honor, but first she has to find the monsters that killed him. Since the Internet doesn't seem to have much reliable information on vampires, she ends up looking for possible past victims. Eureka! A small town near her home in Roanoke, Virginia has had a number of suspicious-looking attacks. Traveling to Ravenholde, she goes to the scenes of the attacks and gets lucky. She hears two voices and finds a Roman style building in the middle of a clearing, weird. She sees the two men talking and then sees one of the vampires that attacked her and Tani, but now what? She makes her way back to her car and the next thing she knows she finds herself in a cave with a strange young woman. Had that Vampire bite done something to her?

I will let you find out what happens next. This book is a prequel for a series so it is a lot of world-building type stuff. Stay tuned. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

An interesting idea, I just didn't care for the MC. I can't even say why, she just didn't 'click' with me.

First time read the author's work?: Yes (Brenda Trim) -- No (Tia Didmon)

Will you be reading more?: No for this series -- I like Tia Didmon's 'Forty' series

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

This is the beginning of a new series which looks quite promising. Nashi who is originally from Japan moved to the states years ago with her now ex husband.
Growing up her father taught her all about the Samurai and their beliefs. Now an adult she continues to practice and attends the local dojo with her friend and instructor, Master Taniguchi. During one of their sessions Master Taniguchi is attacked in the most horrific way in front of Nashi. What she witnesses is so far from the normal realm of reality that she doesn't even realize the scope of her own injuries. What transpires next makes her question her own sanity.
I love that this is leading up to her true potential as a Huntress Reborn.

Huntress Reborn is an exciting prequel to a new series by author Brenda Trim.
Featuring Nishi, a midlife divorcee whose ancestors were Samurai and she in turn trained in the art by her father it begins to look as though her gift is going to serve her well as events begin to unfold in this engaging Paranormal read.
The story was a tantalizing tease of what is to come as the series advances with supernatural beings and intrigue in full force. Sure to keep the reader committed to its powerhouse of action and excellent world building, combined with awesome writing the story will definitively keep the reader engaged and wanting more!

Nishi is 40, divorced, and headed to the Dojo to reset from a hard day with her best friend when they are attacked. She then finds herself in a world unlike what she has ever known, with vampires and shifters and goddesses and hunters. There is a war coming, and it is up to her to stop it.

Like Brenda Trim's other books, this is a complex story. The reader needs to pay attention, because the smallest details are important ones. That being said, this is an incredible start to a new series. I cannot wait to see where she takes these characters, and will be waiting with bated breath for the next installment. This is not to be missed.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The way the author used Artemis and the unknown dark god to add more depth to the story was great. I also liked the part of how Artemis created her own soldier on earth who was able to draft other like minded individuals into her team of vampire hunters. The twist at the end was very well done and has me waiting anxiously for the next installment of the series!! The world building and characters was done very well and allowed me to dive in and really enjoy the book wishing that it was a bit longer.

Good starting point

Nishi is in a mess her mentor and only friend killed by blood thirsty vampires in cold blood, his soul less eyes haunted her. She would find who did this and make them pay. The only thing; she isn't sure she believes in vampires or this whole secret world. Enter Artemis and life as Nishi knows it ends. Now, she is a hunter tasked to find more hunters and stop the Dark God from his evil machinations but, not before finding the vampires responsible for killing her best friend....
This was a great start to a new series that seems very interesting. I look forward to the next installment. Highly recommend.

Nishi's Prequel . . .

Nishizaka Kazuko (“Nishi”) is our heroine, a Japanese divorcee, who practices martial arts for relaxation. She is attacked by a rogue vampire Darick and her mentor Master Taniguchi is killed in the attack.

Nishi’s search for the vampire takes her to the Shadow Council who govern the supernaturals. Additionally, Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, wants her to train more hunters in preparation for war, which she promised would guarantee Nishi a seat on the Shadow Council. She also gave Nishi some special powers to help her deal with supernaturals. It becomes obvious to Nishi that something is coming her way, and she will be right in the middle of the action!

Nishizaka, or Nishi, has survived a vampire attack while her best friend didn't, and now she's mad. When the Goddess Artemis marks Nishi as the new Hunter so she can go after the vampires who attacked, Nishi is ecstatic. At a bar after her transformation, Nishi is accosted by three men and is helped by a part-demon bounty hunter and an ex-serviceman named Nathan, who also becomes marked by the Goddess. This story is short but full of action and includes romance and a bit of steam, ending with a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.

What a mess.
I don’t know where to start with this review. So many things that concern me. The main character is confusing, and I can’t figure out who and what she is and what she wants to become. Her backstory isn’t enough to understand what she’s been through, or where exactly she’s going. Secondary characters are even less developed. I’m thinking this was supposed to be a prequel, but it reads more like the authors wrote out their notes and posted them as the story. With what’s been written, I don’t even like the main character, and really don’t care what happens next. The book needs so much, I cannot recommend it. I received an ARC of the book through Booksprout, and this is my honest opinion.

This story introduces Nishi, an Asian divorcée who has moved to the US to start over. During a night practicing martial arts with her mentor, they are attacked, she survives with the help of the Goddess Artemis, her mentor is killed. Great start to a new series, with Nishi as Artemis’ lead Hunter. Tasked with finding other’s to help her eradicate the vampire’s and the others who are trying to start a war, with the end game being the subjugation of all humanity. 4⭐️‘s.

This is an interesting view regarding Artemis and her hunters. Our huntress turns out to be from a long line of samurai warriors. She's a kick but warrior in her own right, but life has thrown a lot of curves for her and now she's fighting back. She encounters a strange even and ends up finding an unbelievable place in the woods! The intro was a tad slow but it speeds up quick ad goes at full speed ahead for the rest of the book, even snuck in a budding romance at the end! Great into to this series!

this is an exceptional story about several intriguing characters who have met some poopy life situations and are continuing to work their ways through

when faced with slaughter by supernaturals against mundane humans, Nizi acts, is drawn into becoming a hunter, and draws others to her.

As a battle begins to take shape against darker forces, can an archaic council focus more on threat and response and less on procedures that might not be timely?

intense drama and action- excited for more.

I love stories where the heroine is in her 40’s and that’s Nishi who was brought up the way of the samurai, on the way to the dojo Nishi felt like someone was watching her and while at the dojo men come in and kill her master instructor and they bite her and that’s all I’m going to give you guys. This is an exciting and thrilling story and I can’t wait to read what happens next and I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read.

Loved the heroine and Nathan

The backstory is pretty much that of a hermit. Taken away from family & friends to another country. Her husband is very controlling. She has one friend in the United States. When he is murdered she sets out to avenge him. Except I forgot to mention the killer was a vampire. She's no match for a vampire, right? Until she gets sucked into a portal & meets a goddess. Now her life is turned upside down. She has a new purpose in life.

Great start to a new series, Brenda Trim introduces us to vampires, shifters, and hunters. I love a good book where a heroine is mature…Nishi has recently divorced her cheating ex husband and is trying to make a new life for herself but fate has another path for her to walk down. This prequel sets up future books and it looks promising. This is a fast paced quick read and you will enjoy every minute of it. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.
