Nishizaka Kazuko, Nishi, for short, is descended from a samurai warrior family. Growing up in Japan, her father taught her the ways of the samurai and she values honor and her family name. Though she moved to the US to be with her, now ex, husband, she is now divorced and works on web security for private clients. She also goes to a local dojo every evening to work with Master Taniguchi to keep her skills sharp and to stop herself from becoming a recluse. On her way to the dojo one night she feels like someone is following her, but nothing happens. Then, as she and Tani are doing katas (forms), two men burst in and attack them. Tani is killed and Nishi is bitten but police sirens force the vampires to flee. Yep, vampires.
Nishi is determined to avenge Tani's honor, but first she has to find the monsters that killed him. Since the Internet doesn't seem to have much reliable information on vampires, she ends up looking for possible past victims. Eureka! A small town near her home in Roanoke, Virginia has had a number of suspicious-looking attacks. Traveling to Ravenholde, she goes to the scenes of the attacks and gets lucky. She hears two voices and finds a Roman style building in the middle of a clearing, weird. She sees the two men talking and then sees one of the vampires that attacked her and Tani, but now what? She makes her way back to her car and the next thing she knows she finds herself in a cave with a strange young woman. Had that Vampire bite done something to her?
I will let you find out what happens next. This book is a prequel for a series so it is a lot of world-building type stuff. Stay tuned. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
