Awakening Madness #1

One: Angels Are Hard to Love

Rate this book
Dark Contemporary Romance for Strong Women

Can rough love be victorious amidst the madness, the aspiration for power and revenge?
Why is it hard to love an angel, and is it possible that one's only savior could be one's scariest damnation as well?

The madness in Victor and Nia's life is awakening. It makes us wonder if some of the people's most accepted patterns are actually absurd. In their reality, normal and abnormal change places many times, and normal is not what you believe it to be.

This is a story about the peculiar love between two brilliant people who don't understand feelings in a conventional way. In oddball Nia's head, emotions take the form of entities she constantly communicates with, while for maniac Victor, emotions are demons able to destroy. And yet, Victor and Nia are not that different from each other.

Stuck in a post-communist European society, where the chances of a good life are negligible, Nia's brilliance always makes her an outcast. She provokes the interest of none other than Victor Kaov, a shady businessman and the new president of their small eastern European country. Devoid of any empathy, his psyche is driven mad by Nia's beautiful mind.

Nia gets involved in the dirtiness of business, in elite's fakeness and political mafia games, and she is about to learn what destructive passion and toxic clinging mean in love relationships. The mistakes of Victor's gloomy past follow him, and he gets caught in a devastating battle between himself and his only desire. His demons torture him, but will they drag the best or the worst out of him? Who is he, after all?

Nia is about to find out all about his darkness and her own. Then, they both will have to face the most challenging fight - the one for saving themselves.

Join Nia and Victor's chaos in their immersive journey of madness. Their dark story will provoke you to question the meaning of your own life, beliefs and fears.

Hi from Eastern Europe, and welcome to my reality.

I’m Kristin, an unromantic soul searching for balance in this burned-out life. My lack of sleep and the madness of 2021 awakened me. They gave me the urge to write.

In this, I found my shelter from all the anxiety and self-doubts of the crazy world and crazy relationships in which I have always been a misfit.

I spent the last year writing my first book from the Awakening Madness Series.

ONE: ANGELS ARE HARD TO LOVE is my dark contemporary romance for strong women. With my out-of-the-box story, I did my best to excite, inspire and surprise everyone who has ever felt lost.

You will find my protagonist Nia’s thoughts about life and everything that concerns her brilliant mind in the blog.

Sharp. Sensual. Explicit.

Hello my bookish friends!

I was given an ARC copy of this book a while ago so now i finally can talk about what my thoughts are.

This story caught me by surprise because it was so much more than what i thought it will be. I was on edge the entire time while reading it - i had difficulty putting the book down.
I find Kristin Kay's writing style to be clear, rich and easy to read.

I'm impressed by way the characters are written, especially Nia. She has a brilliant mind but considered by many to be weird with no feelings. It was interesting to follow her internal struggle with her own emotions.
Victor on the other had is arrogant, dominant, exhibits self-control and self-discipline. He likes to be able to control the people around him and maybe that's because of the status he holds in the society.
Both of them have issues and struggles and feelings that are to complicated to describe.
We had a real dark romance story that we followed throughout the book not only moments filled with heat and passion. (I experienced a wide and rich range of emotions)
The plot is exiting full with lots of different twist that caught me by surprise.
I wanted more from the side characters because i found them interesting.

These two have very different and difficult path ahead of them and i can't wait to read what will happen in the future.

This was a very interesting and unique story. I was intrigued right from the start and had a hard time putting it down. The imagery and world building was fantastic and creative. And the characters were unique and interesting. The story is filled with all kinds of twists and turns that kept me turning the pages quickly just to see how it would all play out. It definitely kept me captivated and entertained throughout.

Nia and Victor are unique people. Nia is brilliant and strange, where Victor is domineering and arrogant. Together they have this undeniable and dark connection that pulls them together. I enjoyed reading about them trying to navigate their emotions and Nia had me laughing with her inner dialogue.

I enjoyed this story and the writing continually fascinated me. It was clever, creative and filled with an abundance of details and steamy moments. I look forward to reading the next part of the story.

I was given an ARC copy of this book and I am so happy that I gave it a chance. This is a billionaire, mafia-ish, dark romance with neurodiverse characters from debut author Kristin Kay. It is a griping read. If this is your kind of book I would be surprised if you can put it down. But it truly isn’t for every reader. It very much gives dark, adult, rated R version of “Inside Out.” Nia is a unique FMC she has an amazing and beautiful mind it just doesn’t work like ours. And honestly the way she drags societies’ ass for filth about all the so called “normal” stuff we do was hilarious and probably my favorite thing about the book. But her big brain means she doesn’t have the best grasp on emotions. She is the clinical definition of a psychopath, so watching her learn to navigate her feelings when she is used to being ruled by logic and reason was both frustrating and incredible. Then you have Victor our Alpha-hole MMC who is wrapped just as differently as Nia, his paper is just much more expensive and socially acceptable. The entire cast really is a bag of marbles but Kristin made them all intriguing and they played their supporting roles well. The writing style was also very easy to read and the story is very well written. It’s medium burn and well paced. As my first East European -English translated book I think the translations was done well.

I couldn't manage to finish this book. Characters were flat and the story too. Honestly there was nothing to hold on. It didn't provoke my interest and I decided not wasting my time with something I won't remember after one week and which simply said it's not my thing. The main female character was odd and the author used very often complex words which I had the feeling like they were drawn out from some textbook or dictionary. They were not in place. Romantic novel is supposed to be casual and easy to absorb (at least for me), but here everything made me confused and didn't have any sense. Like words were there just to have something on the paper. It was obviously that the author had tried to do something different from the massive perception for love story, but it didn't turn out so successfully as if it was the typical cliche story with erotical tinge which Meghan March writes for example.
I don't think that if I had continued the book to the very last page my opinion would be different. Maybe instead of 1 star, I would have given 2 stars at most. But that's it.

★4.5 maddening stars★

𝙻𝚞𝚌𝚢 meets the evolution of 𝙸𝚗𝚜𝚒𝚍𝚎 𝙾𝚞𝚝 in this pleasantly surprising book. I didn’t expect to find such fascinating and so out of the box story. This beauty is packed with witty and clever references, edgy irony complements a carefully built story. The writing is rich in details and thick with meaning, each syllable a small piece that contributes to form an original jigsaw. The unusual final picture is a breath of fresh air.

The story is told in first POV and from Nia’s perspective, her head to be precise, her inner monologues are a fresh perspective, her lucid analysis an enticing journey of the mind. Her desire to veer from a normal path and to conform leads her into the clutch of a formidable man. Victor is as addictive as dominating, once he sets his eyes on Nia he plows through her barriers in his attempt to own her.

~𝑴𝒚 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒊𝒕. 𝑷𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅, 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒖𝒑 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒔. 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅. 𝑨 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒔𝒔~

Victor’s demeanour a stark contrast to her carefully built equilibrium, his proximity springs the onset of new voices in her head, however some of them refuse to comply to logic. Nia has to face new possibilities and she’s not ready nor equipped to deal with them.

I must admit it took some adjustment to get used to this type of narrative, at first Nia’s mind was a jumble of confused stream of thoughts, as I got to know her, my mind was captured by her genius by the time I reached the end of the story I was addicted to her reasoning I also took her side in her fights, I admired her spirt and was equally indignant as she was with how the male population always try to control and tame women. I was outraged by Victor’s behaviour and I wasn’t happy with his double standards nonetheless I’m still holding my judgment, I hope his backstory will be provided in the next opus, as it stands I can’t forgive him nor the way he selfishly acted.

~𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝑰 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒚 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒚𝒐𝒖... 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚~

This captivating story ends on a cliffhanger 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 went on strike and my limited mind can’t process how to fix the broken pattern until the next chapter comes out…

The mind indeed can be beautiful. When it doesn't conform to that of what is considered normal, well then you can be considered something far less beautiful, possibly even dangerous. This Debut novel captures both. The beauty of a mind that functions on its own path and pace, with its own set of rules and guidelines. Nia is our POV for this journey and be prepared because Nia has her own dialogue it will take a little getting used to but once you do the tale through her mind's eye is one to behold.
Victor on the other hand well he too is fascinated by Nia. But more like a possession or maybe a prized toy, something he can control. He is very Alpha his whole persona speaks of dominance.
There's so much to take in with this book but we are left still seeking answers as we dangle from a cliff.
I have voluntarily left this review.

I always love a read that makes me feel.

I have never read anything as unique as this book. The story follows Nia, a young woman living in Eastern Europe. She has always seen the world in a different way to those around her and has been outcasted as a "freak" by many. She is approached by Victor, who is the newly appointed president of their country, and quickly swept into his life; professionally and romantically.

When I first started this book, I was confused by the writing style and inner monologue. It was such a new feel that I didn't quite understand what was happening until a very specific 'lightbulb moment' hit. Once I realized why it was written the way it was, I was hooked.

Not only is the plot line free-flowing and unpredictable, the romance is gripping and swoon-worthy. This is a dark romance at its core, bleeding into toxic love at certain points, which caused me to feel many mixed emotions as I read. The spice was well written and balanced throughout the story. Trust me, you'll feel plenty from that.

But, more so than the heart throbs and aches you'll inevitably feel, this book brings a sense of belonging to those who feel like they are on the outskirts of society. There were multiple times that I was brought to tears by Kristen's words and the way that they resonated with me. If you are looking for a book that might help you feel seen and heard, try picking this one up.

I would like to thank the author for allowing me to discover her addictive pen.

There we find Victor and Nia who do not perceive their feelings as we do. For Nia her emotions are entities with whom she often communicates and for Victor are demons that can destroy everything and yet they are not so different from each other.

Nia dabbles in shady business, falsity of the elite, political mafia games, as for Victor his past catches up with him, his demons torture him, will he get out of it?

Conclusion

A very nice discovery in the addictive pen of the author,

endearing characters,

suspense, twists and turns.

If you love immersive journeys of madness, dark contemporary romance this is the book to read.

I really enjoyed this. It's dark and different.

I liked Nia a lot, she's different and has a unique mind. There were so many pressures on her to confrom to the norms which was frustrating but so realistic. I really liked watching her learn and grow throughout the story. Viktor was intriguing as we got to know more of him.

The story was intriguing and sexy and, after that ending, I can't wait for the next one.

What an amazing debut! This book was absolutely fenomenal. So unique and different from some of the dark romance books I've read. It was smart, sharp and so well written. The author did a brilliant job here. I could never guess it was her first novel. It kept me glued to the pages from the very beginning. It had everything I love in a book...mystery, suspense, romance and yep some really hot sex scenes too. It was very fast paced and full of twists.
I was completely immersed in the world of Nia and Victor.
Nia was very smart and complicated character. It was a bit hard for me to connect with her at first but as further I went into the book I began to understand her better and why she is the way she is. She wasn't able to express her emotions like most people and that made her more unique and beautiful to me. Made me love her mind and I loved being inside of it. She was so fucking smart and I was fascinated by her from the start. The more I read about her the more I understood.
And then we have Victor...omg Victor...I fell in love with him. Damn that man knew what he was doing...in and out of bed!
Victor was dark, alpha, dominating and he was the perfect match for Nia. They were both made for each other in every sense.
I really don't wanna give too much but I can only say this...you all need to read it. If you like angsty dark mafia romance books then I highly recommend this one.
"Angels are hard to love" is book one in the Madness trilogy and it's a fucking must read!! As a dark booklover I absolutely devoured it.

3.5/5 STARS

One: Angels Are Hard To Love, the debut novel of Kristen Kay, isn't like anything I've read before.

The tropes for this story are billionaire, age gap, and mafia romance, and the story is told from the FMC's POV.
Maybe it's because the book originally wasn't written in English but translated into it, and my primary language isn't English, but the story was hard to read at the start. This made it difficult to get into the characters, but fortunately, it got better as the story went on.
Nia is unique, her way of thinking is different and out of society's norm. She often is considered crazy and doesn't have lots of support or friends.
President Viktor is an alpha-hole, possessive, arrogant, and used to getting everything he wants.
This couple was constantly bickering, which annoyed me after some time, and I felt like they were unable to have a normal conversation.

One: Angels Are Hard To Love is a dark and intense romance. A story filled with steam, intrigue, and angst. Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat from start to finish!

A little warning, it ends with a cliffhanger.

I received an ARC from the author but am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This is the first book in the Awakening Madness Series, and the debut novel from this author. I found this to be such a well written, enthralling, insightful, and thought provoking read.

I straight up could not put this book down. The storyline and characters quickly capture your interest and they hold on tight throughout the book.

I have honestly never experienced a read like this one, so if you are looking for a surprising, unique, dark romance read, then I would definitely recommend this book.

Fair warning, we do get left with a cliffhanger, and I myself will be excitedly awaiting the next book in this fantastic series.

Numbers, voices, sex, vibration, logic, intuition - the begining of madness.
What is normal and usual? May be our trite everyday grey reality where everyone must be the same. Otherwise you are a freak with irregular shapes mismatched to the main public reality.

In this world Niya and Victor interlace their madness with love. But this love is very dynamic and not so healthy for their minds and actions. Both are intelligent and sensitive in their ways, but from different social classes and lifestyle and this is the main reason, which separates them.

Angels are hard to love, they are not from this world. They are like a jewel in the shoe, which annoys you, but shows you that you are alive and still feel.

This is my first novel in this genre. The genre is "dark mafia romance".
In the world of marketing, it's important to be first. Everyone who follows will be compared to number one, and later number three to number two. Although the genre is far from my favorite but Christine Kay's book created excitement and interest from the beginning. The main charavter, I think is with clearly OCD or maybe Asperger's, but that's what drew me to her. Described in such a brutal way that she become to you sympathy. The bright images of all the characters are presented in such a way that they are imprinted in your mind and you can imagine each one of them.Nia struggles with the stereotypes of the world, trying to fit in with constructed rituals and numbers. Naturally, I compared Nia with E.L. James' Anastasia and Blanca Lepinski's stupid Laura and looked for similarities, which, thank God, I didn't find. However, I found a lot of common things in the main alpha male of all three (Massimo and Gray). It was nice that there is a mystery and we can expect some suspense in the next parts, I hope.Writing about sex is difficult.Thats my opinion, and here the author grabbed me by aiming for the border between eroticism in sex without crossing it and becoming vulgar. I love books that are full of useful information, and this one definitely was. I am looking forward to part two.

I was given a ARC copy of this book by the Author a little while ago.

I started this book knowing fully that this could boggle my mind.
It sure did! But in the best of ways.

This book was something else. Once I finished the book I literally couldn't stop thinking about it.

Nia is a Genius, she is extremely intelligent and amazingly good with numbers and often labelled as a freak among other things. She thinks, speaks and feels in a different way to what "Normal" people do.

Viktor is The president. A control freak who needs and craves order and is used to getting everything he wants has trouble communicating as well but when he sets his sights on Nia he decides he wants her.

These two together are explosive. The push and pull, the angst, the heat and the sex.....it's WHOA!!

These two are such complex and complicated characters but I COULD. NOT. GET. ENOUGH.

I could only do away with viktors "Toys" Now that was my one and only unlike thing about it I did not like.

But this book is set to make people think outside the box.
It is dark.
It is sexy.
It has a twisted plot.

Open your mind and read this book.
I couldn't get enough. It's F**CKING GOOD🔥❤️

Ends on a cliffhanger though.

For this Kristin's Debut Novel I find she has done a fantastic job. What we have here is an English version that was translated for the wider readers to enjoy. That is not an easy job and one I can absolutely appreciate. 👏

Kristin Kay is a new eastern European author and she is the brilliant mind behind this fantastic novel,a novel with a bit of „The Love Hypothesis“ vibes but more consuming and intense.

Our leading lady, Nia, is kind of a female Sheldon Cooper. Highly intelligent, with a wonderland mind, she lives her life based on Knowledge, Logic and Reason… always analytical and rational, she strikes for greatness, truly confident in her abilities and her genius. Sadly, being herself is often misunderstood and considered crazy, she lacks support and friendship.
But when the opportunity to work for Victor Kaov, the most influential person in the country, comes along, a person that seems to level with her, things start to change and her brilliant mind must find a way to comprehend the new events in her life.

Funny, angsty, challenging, steamy… these are the most adequate words to describe this book. Nia is one of a kind, I have read my fair share of books but she surprised me, better said impressed the hell out of me. She was unpredictable, her mind splendid and the author portrayed so beautifully her unparalleled way of navigating through the new feelings that Victor awakened in her.

Their story is not easy, it will make you rage and scream at your Kindle…but it‘s like a compulsion, you cannot stop reading about these one-of-a-kind characters.
And Kristin ended this book so ambiguous, and now I need the next one.

I can only say positive things about this debut, and I encourage every one of you to give these characters a chance.

It was quite an interesting and catchy plot with lots of twists. It tells the story of two brilliant but odd people, whose way to express their feelings and emotions is quite unconventional.
In the begining its a bit complicated to keep track of everything that is happening but once you get immersed in their story you can't get enough. I would definitely love to read the second book and see where they will end up.

I had the chance to be among the first readers and I strongly recommend this book!
The dark novel kept me awake and enlightened the long winter nights. I loved discovering the main characters.
No spoilers but I promise you that the unfolding of Nia from a timid girl into a more and more confident young woman will enchant you and keep you awake too.

Romance is not my thing in literature really, but I would like to recommend this read.

I happened to read "One: Angels Are Hard to Love", the first book in an upcoming series, and I was impressed by author Kristin Kay's unusual, out-of-the-box approach to this genre. Her female protagonist Nia is the most bizarre and sophisticated woman you'd expect to encounter, and if you are interested in experiencing something different, you'd better check this book out 📖 Enjoy!

This was a interesting and exciting read. A trip through the mind and soul. Nia was a brilliant and fantastic character, Victor was a arrogant and confident man and perfect for Nia. The sex was hot and the secondary characters fit right in. It was a unique and different read. This is a dark romance that keeps you thinking what will happen next. What a great start to a new series. It does end in a cliffhanger! I highly recommend checking it out! - Wonderful World of Books

I really like this type of novels! It was a bit difficult at first as I got used to Nia's personality, but then I couldn't stop reading. This is a story about an atypical love, strong passion, betrayals and friendships. A story about the extraordinary lives of people with brilliant minds.
I loved it, I can't wait for books 2 and 3 to come out!

Nia is different. Her friends consider her ingenious but insensitive and strange. Formula and algorithms are spinning in her head, which doesn't give her peace until she solves them...
Victor is the typical alpha male. He is self-confident, arrogant, dominating and controlling. He offers a job to Nia, and she calculates that statistically speaking, she should accept it...
This is a story about peculiar love between two brilliant people who don't understand feelings in a conventional way...
A different story with an existing plot and a lot of heat. You will find erotica, intrigue, angst, palpability, billionaire lifestyle, crimes and so much more...

Hello, inhabitants of the bookverse! 🤗
A few weeks ago, Christine Kay's book "Angels Are Hard to Love" was sent to me to read before it was published and to write a review about it, so here I am with my opinion.

Nia doesn't fit well with the common reality. Her highly intelligent mind, as well as her over-rational thinking without the intervention of any emotion in her actions, make her look like a freak in the eyes of others, and her way of speaking pushes them even further away from her. Until she meets him.
Viktor Kaov. A president, a control freak and accustomed of getting everything he wants. And ever since he saw Nia, she's been his only wish, and he's ready to own her at all costs. However, he has no idea that Nia is not so easy to conquer and doesn't care what he wants. Will they be able to overcome their differences and madness, or will this clash of characters destroy both of them?
~~~
Definitely my opinion of this book has changed while reading in a positive way.
In the prologue, the writing style felt very bad to me. Both as a way of expressing, and from the details that the author had inserted, separately sounding as if it had been written in another language first, and then translated with a Google translator. That's how I knew reading this book would probably be veeery hard.
In the first two or three chapters, it keeps repeating the same thing, sometimes written differently, sometimes not, and that kept irritating me. As the pages went through, however, I began to get used to the style, the characters and the writing, as if it had become a little better, so the anguish stopped being so big.
The story is interesting, the plot can be said is dynamic, but what I did not like about it are the quarrels that happen almost all the time and are written just like the actions that support the dynamics in the book. I think there have been other ways for the story to be on a good level without the characters yelling every time they have conversations. There were even a few actions that, while not particularly logical, made the plot different from the circle of bickering in which it was stuck, and so it was much better.
The characters revolve around the same conversations that make them bicker without moving anywhere. Basically, they're stuck in one place with two or three lines that they know and keep repeating, expecting a different reaction from the other. As I mentioned before - there is almost no normal communication between any of them, and when there is, it is a breath of fresh air and a moment of rest, between the otherwise straining environment. And some of their actions are illogical and placed there just for the story to continue or at least I felt it that way.
The characters aren't built badly, but that doesn't mean they're okay. In an attempt to make the main character different, the author has created some unbearable mess that speaks and thinks like a robot, does not experience emotions and behaves like a psychopath. By the middle of the book it is already understood where all this is coming from, but the first half is so difficult to pass that it is too late to explain the reasons for Nia's behaviour in the second. In other words – the idea is very thoughtful, but that becomes clear too late and that's not good. Besides, the good thing is that the protagonist is starting to behave more like a normal person, so the readers can place themselves in her shoes, because before that she is completely unapproachable.
Victor, on the other hand, feels like the author wanted to create as the typical bad boy with power, arrogance, self-esteem to the sky and a hard past, but in the end he remained a flat character, whose actions made no sense and seemed extremely unfounded.
Erotic scenes are what surprised me nicely. The first is not the worst, it is rather bearable, but with each subsequent one they get better and better and I can admit that they are very well written hot moments.
The end is open, hinting at what we can expect in the next book, because there will be one. And the most interesting thing is that the last few pages are from Victor's point of view, unlike the whole book before (aside from the prologue), which allows us to peek into his thoughts for a moment and gives us bits of mysteries so as to caress curiosity about the second book in the series.
So this book is real thick and there is a whole lot going on in here. Nia has an incredibly exceptional mind, she can see patterns everywhere, or more specifically, errors in those patterns. Everyone around her wants her to change to the "norms" of the society. This drove me nuts, but is such an accurate portal of how society often wants to change you to their expectations, even though there is nothing wrong with being different. Nia gains the attention of the new president of the previously capitalist country she lives in, and Victor is definitely more then he allows portrayed to the general public.
One of the reason that this book is so long is because both these characters need a lot of character building for the reader to understand them both, and the author does a phenomenal job of this. It took me a bit to really get into this book, but once I did I became absolutely hooked on Nia & Victor. Even some of the side characters have me wanting to know so much more of their backstories.
This is book one in a brand new series by a new author, it is completely different from anything I have ever read before. Nia is a great character who stands by her beliefs & her limits. She stood up to Victor so many times because he tried to push her. These two are such a contradiction of too similar and too different.
I cant wait to see where this story will go for these two.
I was kindly sent this book as an ARC, so a big thank you to the author and her team for trusting me with it!
So, I was quite surprised by how action packed this book was and I enjoyed this aspect of it quite a lot.
However, I did not enjoy how unnatural the two main characters would speak to each other and how often they would fight. People get furious sometimes, but not as often as it was portrayed in the book. Also, I found it generally a bit repetitive at times.
To sum up, the book had an interesting storyline, but the writing style was not as enjoyable.
I received this complimentary ARC in exchange for an honest review.
2.5/5 to be honest.
The book follows the story of Nia – young and extremely intelligent. She sees everything as numbers, data and mathematical models, but she lacks emotionality. When she meets Victor, a typical alpha, powerful, rich and extremely high position in the social pyramid, he offers her a job. Niya calculates that she has no reason to refuse. Things get really interesting when Victor’s real character is revealed. He is almost as peculiar as Niya. He is so obsessed with having total control over anything, being maniacal and is used to never getting “no” for an answer. Their lives get tangled in a weird but yet intriguing and exciting way.
I really liked the plot, quite dynamic. Something was always happening and it was keeping my attention. There is a lot of tension and the hot scenes were quite well written.
I did not like how the characters were built. First off, Victor – For a person who started off the ghetto, you could even say he started from ground zero, he should be aware that life isn’t butterflies and rainbows and you don’t always get what you want. He lacks more than just communication skills, as it is presented every few pages, he lacks many human qualities.
Second – Nia. Come on, for someone with THAT high IQ (although we never understood how high exactly) and have claims to be an absolutely rational person, she made extremely stupid, unreasonable decisions and she doesn’t even respect herself as a full-fledged person. She thinks as a 15 yo. Srsly. You can’t repeat that you are super smarter than everyone in each sentence yet allow everyone to boss you around and manipulate you that way. Things just get intense and sexual and she completely lose her mind. Come on…
On the other hand, I really liked Toma and Chris. They were the most acceptable characters and they were really lovable.
As a conclusion I can say: I really did enjoy the idea of the book and the plot. I was reading it with quite enjoyment for the plot, but the main characters were absolute pain in the ass. I will definitely read the second book if it comes out.
🔞📚 "Angels are hard to love" - Christine Kay 📚🔞
Nia is different. Her friends consider her a genius, but callous and strange. Formulas and algorithms are spinning in her head, which do not give her peace until she solves them...
Victor is the quintessential alpha male. He is self-confident, arrogant, domineering and controlling. He offers Nia a job, and she figures that statistically speaking, she should take it.
This is a story of a special love between two brilliant people who do not express their feelings in a conventional way...
A different story with an intriguing plot and many hot moments.
.
First part of the "Madness" series.
I admit that at first I felt quite confused in this book. Nia, who has such a high intelligence, irritated me extremely much with her actions and actions.
But as the story progressed, I admit I got carried away.
Victor as a hero is a representative of those men of the stronger sex, who are very attractive, literally can have any woman. In such novels there is no shortage of sex scenes, but here they seemed to be more appropriate. I admit that I slightly missed them.
The book reminded me of another one I read in my teenage years and it was a total hit, but here things are different. It's as if our characters themselves needed each other to function properly. I was interested in following how our characters struggle with their emotions.
Another character I really liked was Toma.
I do not regret taking the time to read this book. I am glad that I had this opportunity. I wish the author a lot of success from the bottom of my heart. I cannot fail to note that I also liked the selected playlist.
This was a very engaging read. Angels are hard to love is the story of two highly intelligent people who struggled to connect with society’s normality but found and understand each other in their unconventional ways. From the start, we met the heroine Nia who found herself entangled with Victor’s controversial messy political life. I must say this, Victor is a very intriguing character, but as the story progresses, we learn more about the enigmatic man behind his stoic persona.
This book is a dark romance full of deception and Victor’s shenanigans I can already say the story is just begun. Nia is a very strong and intelligent woman I was quite annoyed at how people treat her as being different although she is different as I also struggle to connect with her. But at the same time admiring her wittiest and kindness she is an incredibly unique human being that you want to befriend that is why? for me it is important a definite diagnosis of her mental status. Is she a psychopath with schizophrenia with all the entities blabbering in her mind? I don’t know? she can be all of the above. I enjoy the chemistry between Nia and Victor it was sizzling hot how they interact with their world also the side character is amazing. Overall, it was a fun read.
Intriguing in a weird way?
This story had great potential. The writing is not terrible, but I can't push away the feeling that a lot was lost in translation.
The author says that this was written in 9 depressing days and took two years to be published, and I just wanted to acknowledge that because it couldn't have been easy.
Nia's and Victor's story is pure toxic love. It is not the fact that "the madness" is omnipresent or how their mind work (weird AF, I have to say) that held me back from truly rooting for them. Toxicity will ruin you, and by the end, I felt they should really be apart for both their sakes.
Not sure if "Two" will see the light of the day, but "One" was not for me.
