“Why would Fate make us both fall for the same human female?”
Channing… *sigh*
I’ve been waiting what seems like forever for this book! Channing has always been my favorite shifter in the pack and I wanted so much for him to finally find his HEA. I’ve always known there was more to him than his outwardly charming, laid-back ways indicated. He’s still the same Channing, playful, fun, teasing, but he’s also protective, loyal, passionate and dominant, something I somehow wasn’t really all that surprised to discover. What was unexpected was his insecurities, his beliefs that he was less than he should be and somehow unworthy of love and happiness. Falling for his much loved and missed dead brother’s widow just seemed to reinforce his feelings of inadequacy and doubts that he could ever be someone she would need or want. Yes, Channing proved to be a lot more complex than I think anyone realized, but just as wonderful as I expected.
Julia, Channing’s sister-in-law and fated mate, was a surprise as well. While I did get a little annoyed with her and how quick she was to misjudge him at the start, I also realize she didn’t really know the Channing we have all come to know and love as she hadn’t seen him in ten years. Her almost teenage reactions to his physical appeal were absolutely hysterical. She was constantly distracted by him running around without his shirt on, not that I blame her! I’d be trailing after him like a puppy myself. But, like she said herself, she’s a lawyer. Yet she tried to excuse her loss of coherent words by claiming “It might be his shirtlessness”. I mean, that’s not even a real word! Clearly he was messing with her brain as well as her libido from the very beginning. And he wasn’t very good at hiding how much he was attracted to her, either. Lucky girl! It was a lot of fun watching them dance around each other trying to fight their feelings.
I also absolutely adored Geo, Julia’s son and Channing’s nephew. What a cutie! I can’t wait to see him as he continues to grow and mature. I have a feeling he’s going to be as charming, gorgeous and irresistible as his uncle but, hopefully, without his inner turmoil and insecurities. I’m sure one day we will get to see his story although as he’s only 13 right now it will be years before we do. Meanwhile there’s still a bad guy on the loose and a new, bigger threat to deal with. There’s no way Renee and Lee are going to leave us hanging so I’m sure there will be more stories to enjoy very soon.
One last thing I’d like to say. Renee is fantastic at weaving past, present and future characters from all of her shifter series into her books. For example in this one we have appearances by Trey, Jared, and Caleb, among others, as well as the offhanded reference to other shifter packs where the males mate in pairs. I love how her shifter books, regardless of being in different series or written with different co-authors, all exist in the same universe. If you haven’t read any of her other books it’s ok. You don’t have to have read any to enjoy this one although even just reading the others in this series will enhance your enjoyment of this book. For readers who have read her other shifter books there are a number of fun Easter eggs that will be a delight and, for me at least, a little bit of a challenge. Some of the books she dropped references to I haven’t read in years and I found myself racking my brain trying to remember. Now that I’m finished with this one I’m going to go back and revisit a few of them, which will be a lot of fun. It will also help tide me over until her next book is published.
