She is the town sweetheart, all sunshine and smiles.I'm more of a thundercloud.After a childhood spent bouncing from one foster home to the next, I'm finally in control of my world. With the exception of a few close friends, I want to be left alone. I scowl, people back off. It's always worked. Except for her. She keeps coming back around like a bad penny. She's everything that I despise......until she's not.(excerpt) As a general rule, people are not friendly to me. I make sure of it. One dark look and most of the nosy people in this town trip over themselves to get out of my way. But not this pint sized kindergarten teacher. She smiled at me like we were long lost friends. "Did you ever watch Sesame Street when you were growing up?" she asked. The way she bounced around from one topic to the next gave me whiplash. "Sesame Street?", I repeated. My mouth engaged before my brain. If I kept responding, she would never go away. "The children's show? Big Bird, Bert and Ernie -" "Yeah," I cut her off. "Yeah you've heard of it, or yeah you watched it?" I rolled my eyes. "Make your point." She smiled and shrugged her slim shoulders. "You remind me of one of the characters." My eyes narrowed. She had called me a grouch earlier, so it didn't require a great intellectual leap to know that she was referring to the hairy green guy that lived in a trash can. Oscar the Grouch. I could live with that. "Oscar didn't like talking to his overly chatty neighbors," I reminded her and turned my back, hoping she would get the message.
