The fact that it took me 1.5 years to finish this should already be indication enough as to what I think of this manga.
I thought the first season was relatively nice and unique; however, the characterisation was a complete mess in this season. The actions of the lead characters in some instances relatively consistent as a whole, but not consistant with their character. An example of this is Ein's behaviour towards the Imperial family. He is very antagonistic towards the crown prince and does not compromise, which in some way is very consistant with the Ein from the novel Rosaline read, but is not consistent with the Ein that promises to only do things that Rosaline will like. In those scenes he does not think one bit about Rosaline's position and how his actions could put her in danger which seemed out of character for him.
Also the crown prince and his father that continue to have misunderstandings about the Chade family's role in the empire. I get that the misunderstanding is used to further the plot. However, it does not seem realistic that the emperor would not prepare his heir enough for his coming role, especially when he can see how stubborn the crown prince is. (It gets worse when the crown prince in the next season realises to cooperate with the Chade's within a few epsiodes of the season in order to control the nobels like his father did).
There were two refreshing things in this season: the introduction of Karina (who most likely will become Ein's wife, but this is only speculation) and Elisa. Personally, I did not like Elisa, but she symbolises something that I quite liked. Elisa is the daughter of the antithetic house to the Chade's. Her house is rightous and well liked by the public. That their house and the Imperial house can enjoy those reputations because they do not need to get their hands dirty as the Chade family takes that position is conveniently left out. Like so often she is just as judgmental as most daughers of those kinds of houses in mangas, but she is able to change and bend her judgment which is a refreshing change. In many mangas these kinds of characters do not change often and believe themselves to be constantly in the right a good example of this is Diana from My derelict favourite (if you haven't heard about it then check it out! It is really good ongoing manga, but it also has a light novel that has already been completed).
Karina on the other hand is such a cutie and I am really looking forward to seeing how her relationship with Einspanner is going to develop and how this couple will react when Carcius leaves the duke position to his son and plans to go to the duchy together with Rosaline in order to finally spend som uninterrupted time with his wife. Maybe then we will see a child of Carcius and Rosaline as Carcius really would like a girl that looks like Rosaline. Would I be the only one that would enjoy to see Carcius and Ein if Rosaline had another mini Carcius instead of a daughter?
In summary, I wasn't sold on this and I thought the plot was a real mess. If you can look over that then go for this the bouts of jealousy from both Ein and Carcius are quite entertaining, though I am not sure if they are enough to keep me reading the next season in full. I might just read the last few chapters and side stories if there are any in order to see if there is the end of the manga, but if the plot does not improve then the third season will definitely not get a good rating if i even read the whole season.
