I didn’t swear vengeance on the Severino Family after Ellie’s death. I was only a child after all. I didn’t swear vengeance when my father, a coward who wasn’t man enough to seek justice for her, drank himself into a divorce. Going after them would be a death sentence. I chose to live my life in the shadows, seeking revenge for others. That was until I ran into the very man that took Ellie’s life. I can still smell the smoke clinging to my skin from all the bridges I burned because of that man. Walking away was no longer an option. Killing him would be easy, but taking the woman that was promised to him seemed like a better wager. Exacting retribution through her was the gamble I made. Surviving her now seems impossible.
Marie James is a mother of two boys and wife of 17 years. She's spent most of her life lifetime living in central Texas, with only short stays in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. Her passions include reading everything under the sun and sewing, although she doesn't get to sew much these days!.
Writing has always been a passion and she's enjoying every step of the journey!
WOW! This series is one that will have totally enthralled.
BRIDGES BURNED is Hollis Ford's story and we find out a lot about his past and what drives him to work for Mission Mercenaries. In this story he is given a job that almost guarantees his demise but he doesn't even blink an eye at that fact and I have to say it totally boggled my mind on why that was until we learn about his childhood.
Madelene Lombardi is betrothed to Alessio Severino as payment for her fathers misdeeds, under Alessio's hand as well as his brothers Madelene is abused (physically, mentally, and sexually). As any abuser knows she must stand tall by her man and never let on what is happening behind closed doors otherwise it will be worse so when Hollis sees Madelene for the first time he thinks she's as bad as they are...but looks as we all know can be deceiving.
Hollis and Madelene have a fascinating chemistry, I for one loved the push and pull of it.
This story isn't for the faint of heart, this story covers some tough topics but the hardest are ones that take place off page and are the catalyst for the vengeance Hollis and another seeks when it comes to the Severino Family. We do witness some of the abuse that takes place with Madelene so be mindful of that going in.
I would recommend this story to those that enjoy STEAMY Dark Romances, Forced Proximity Romances, or Stockholm Syndrome Romances.
I liked this book a lot. The mafia storyline was great and the twists and complications within the mafia world were thrilling. I’m so hoping that we see a specific character again soon (can’t say specifics since I don’t want to spoil anything). My reason for why this isn’t a great book , is that the relationship between Hollis and Mads started off very similar in terms of demands from the guy in terms of payment, etc. It just felt too similar to book 2 for me. Hollis was a bit softer than Liam (book 2), and he had a very interesting backstory for his hatred and motivations. Possible readers be warned and check the trigger warnings - there are graphic and dark descriptions of violence and r@pe in this book. The ending is quite a twist and leaves you anxious for the next one!
Hollis is another loner within the Mission Mercenaries. Again we know very little about him or his former life but with this we get to know how and why he has decided to take this path. Delivering justice for those who can’t do it themselves. He has distanced himself from society deliberately, he keeps no connections bar one and likes it like that. He burns all his bridges! His intentions are good although this methods are somewhat grey!!
Madeline is a soon to be mafia princess, she is in a position of privilege, she’s living the best life with one of Chicago’s most feared families, totally under their protection…..or is she? That’s what they would have you believe but what she is actually enduring is depraved and beyond comprehension.
This story, like the two before has a forced proximity element, as Hollis finds himself going completely off character and against orders….but what happens when their little bubble is burst…who’s going to pay the highest price?
I felt so much heartache for Madeline. I raged at one character in particular and seriously hope that gets sorted later…but I loved, that despite everything she had endured she was still a gentle soul and had managed to keep herself.
Another great visit with these interesting characters dishing out their own form of justice….I’ve got a feeling this next one could be a doozie!!
Bridges Burned was another dark delightful read for this series. This story had lots of danger, drama, and plot twists, I didn’t see coming.
Hollis likes to keep busy. So when a job is mentioned, he’s all for doing it. The fact that it’s high payment and risk of death, doesn’t make him even blink. He’s been there, done that. He is even willing to share with all the guys.
Only this job isn’t what he thought it would be.
After I finished the previous book, I was dying to know what happened next with this mystery job. I didn’t know who would get the job? What the job was? So I’m giving no spoilers, and you must read to find out.
Another great book from this author. This book is not for the fainted heart. Madelene is pretty much sold by her father to settle a debt to a cruel family. The brothers get off on humiliating her. In rolls Hollis, sent to do a job that turns into so much more. Can he help her get away or will they both die in attempting? Great book!
Except revenge. Then it gets in the way of vengeance and makes you question every life decision you’ve made. So when Hollis’s priorities change it’s infuriating to him but beautiful to read!! Dark, twisty and that ending?! Wowza.
I love when the author digs into her darkside. She is insanely good at. While I've enjoyed other series by this author, they lack the grit that this one has.
My only complaint with this book was how rushed it felt towards the end. There had been so much build-up with these two characters that I felt almost cheated that I didn't get to see more of Mads and Hollis getting to shine together. I do look forward to the next book.
Burned Bridges is the third instalment in the Mission Mercenaries series, the darkness continues as does the quirky banter and conflicting behaviours of some characters. I consider this a highly educational read in respect to the evils of the world. People are a wee bit crazy, some are inherently evil, others dabble on the fringe of sanity. If the seedier side of life is your thing this read will draw you in completely. Most enjoyable experience in a hot sexy, warped kind of way.
3.75stars--BRIDGES BURNED is the third instalment in Marie James’ contemporary, adult MISSION MERCENARIES dark, erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for Mission Mercenaries-a spin off from the author’s Cerberus MC series.. This is Hollis Ford, and twenty-one year old, Mafia princess Madelene Lombardi’s story line. BRIDGES BURNED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information is revealed when necessary.
WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Hollis and Madelene) BRIDGES BURNED focuses on the need for revenge. Mission Mercenaries latest contract is a suicide mission to Mexico, but Hollis Ford’s need for revenge is stronger than his need to survive. Hollis never expected to find himself with a hostage in the wake of taking down several members of the Cortez Cartel. Enter Madelene Lombardi, a victim of the Cortez Cartel, sold by her father as payment for a debt. In hiding, believing the Cartel is but moments behind, Hollis will take advantage of his current situation, forcing Madelene to obey his every command. Exchanging one jailer for another, Madelene discovers that in order to survive, she must bow down to the man in charge but Hollis is about to find himself in deeper than he could have ever imagined when Mission Mercenaries doesn’t look too kindly to going rogue. What ensues is the building relationship between Hollis and Madelene, and the potential fall-out as Madelene, once again, finds herself facing the past, as past that no longer accepts the woman she has become, or
The relationship between Madelene and Hollis is a forced proximity; enemies to lovers; tragic pasts; revenge abduction in which Madelene has gone from the proverbial frying pan into the fire. Regardless of the outcome, Madelene believes her life is forfeit, it is only a matter of when and how. Hollis is a man who likes to take control, and from the outset, he takes control of our story line heroine turning their relationship into a ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ affair. The $ex scenes are impassioned but I did not feel the love between our story line couple.
The secondary and supporting characters include Angel Guerra and Lauren Vos (Lessons Learned 1), Liam Stone and Raya Reed (Mistakes Made 2); Mission Mercenaries Nash, Fox and Donavan Gibson. The requisite evil has many faces.
BRIDGES BURNED is a graphic story of murder and abuse; betrayal and vengeance, power and control, acceptance and determination. The premise is dramatic, gritty and tragic; the characters are broken, flawed and desperate; the romance is edgy and intense. BRIDGES BURNED ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.
Hollis Ford works for a private company and is about to take on a risky job without knowing who is involved. He has no personal ties to anyone and refuses to get close to any of his other teammates and prefers a solitary life. But he has also had revenge on his mind for many years after his sister was killed which eventually led to the deaths of his parents.
Madelene Lombardi is engaged to Alessio Severino due to a deal her father made after he was caught stealing from the Severino family. Now Madelene is also being sexually abused by Alessio’s younger brother but she knows she can’t say anything. She feels like she is living in a prison but also knows she can’t escape.
Yet when the job leads Hollis to Madelene, he’s not sure if the job he set out to do is really what he wants to complete and when his own interest comes into play what will he be willing to do and risk?
This was a good book but parts reminded me of previous books by the author.
Hollis was a very standoffish kind of person and I wish these Mercenary guys had some more personality and warmth to them. I get that their job is extremely high risk but it’s hard to “fall” for such a cold guy. I found it took me forever to really warm up to Hollis and root for him.
Madelene on the other hand I really enjoyed and hated what she was put through by the Severino brothers and then by Hollis. I gave her credit for doing whatever she needed to in order to survive but still keeping up her guard and really thinking about all of her options.
Hollis was very attracted to Madeline but there wasn’t any real chemistry until about half way through the book. Hollis treated her awful and she did what was required of her to be able to eat but I absolutely hated how Hollis treated her when she had been a victim. I really struggled with how I viewed Hollis and eventually he began to care but it was a little too late for me.
I knew that there was still going to be a threat but I was surprised at initially Hollis was discovered. From there things got pretty bad and then I must say I was initially completely shocked at the revelation and then completely disappointed in how Madeline was treated by one individual. It bothered me so much and I know there will hopefully be something written about it as I am not happy!
The ending had some pretty surprising twists and I was happy for how parts of it ended but not everything! Looking forward to more in this series to hopefully make some amends for certain things in this one!
The 3rd book in this Mission Mercenaries series, not for the faint hearted, this is a dark and brutal series full of scenes containing captivity, abuse, violence (physical and sexual) and situations you would run from but the women held captive end up falling for their captors.
Hollis is a member of Angel's team, the latest mission being a very dangerous one and Hollis is the first to offer his services. Hollis' whole revenge outlook on life stems from the brutal killing of Ellie by the Severino family, this in turn led to his father dying from alcoholism rather than seeking justice for her. Hollis keeps busy, keeps tabs on the Severino family, but ultimately keeps himself away from them, until this new mission brings him face to face with both Severino brothers.
He knows he is going to die, but wants to exact his revenge before doing so. Both brothers are virtually untouchable surrounded by their security. But they have a woman with them, who appears to be in on their evil games, both brothers seem to be with her, so he decides that taking her from them would be his best bet.
Madelene has been sold to the Severino family to pay off her father's debt to them. She is engaged to the older one but is tortured and abused by both of them. She has been taught to act and appear in a certain way, knowing the beatings and abuse she will receive if she steps out of line, 'no' is not an option for her.
After being taken by Hollis she is held captive by him, this was by no means an improvement on the Severino family, she finds she must now down to whatever Hollis demands of her, finding herself naked and exposed and on display for him, but not abused, as he makes her pay her 'living' debts off to him.
Hollis is only a step away from being out of control with Madelene, he finds it difficult to stay away, wanting her badly, yet never abusing her physically. He goes rogue from his team, saying he couldn't find her, keeping her captive. Madelene knows she is safer with Hollis than with the Severino family, thinking they will come for her any minute, so know her life is forfeit one way or the other.
This was a good read, again a captive one much like book 2 in this series, except I didn't quite get the connection with these two as much, Hollis is very much more standoffish and I didn't feel the chemistry between them until much later on in the book. Still it was a great story line, I enjoyed the ending and there are definitely some surprises in there I didn't see coming. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Madelene Lombardi had been living a nightmare for the past few years. Pretty much sold to the Severino family to pay her father’s debt for stealing, she’s to marry the oldest brother. But, the Severinno brothers are beyond cruel and enjoy humiliating her as well as making her hurt and suffer. She knows she’s going to die by their hand someday, she just doesn’t know when or how.
Hollis Ford had vowed vengeance on the Severinos after the death of a childhood friend and the spiraling consequences ruined his family. He’s not a good guy, but as long as he is taking out guys worse than him, he’s okay with it. He knows going after the Severino family is a death wish, but it doesn’t stop him. And, when Madelene presents herself as another way to get to teh brothers. he takes it.
But Madelene isn’t the person he thought she was when he snatched her. And, now he can’t seem to walk away . . .
Ohhh, Hollis and Madelene were fiery hot. There are definitely some Stockholm Syndrome vibes happening, but the closer these two get and the more Hollis starts understanding Madelene and her motivations, the more he knows he’ll do anything to protect her.
I loved Madelene. She is so much stronger than she first appears. All she wants is to survive and to make her own choices in life . . .and, she knows she will have neither at the start of this book. In the most bizarre of ways, Hollis gives her hope, even as her captor, and a sense of safety which really helps her start to take her control back . . . even as she gives it to him.
Hollis is a bad guy, but with a bit of a moral compass . . . he certainly didn’t expect to have feelings for anyone, especially the woman he stole from his enemies, but, once he’s in, he’s not letting her go . . .and I kind of loved that vibe from him.
This couple is complex, fiery and definitely a bit kinky, and kept me turning the page well after my bedtime. 4.5 stars!
The third book from the Mission Mercenaries series, Bridges Burned brings readers another dark and drama filled storyline.
The mercenaries themselves are a brotherhood, Lauren included, not the type we’re familiar with i.e. the Cerberus MC, but a brotherhood nonetheless.
The storyline focuses on Hollis and Madeline, the pair are brought together when Hollis accepts a job which in turn brings him into contact with Madeline, his past traumas have led him to be the man he is today as for Madeline she’s been let down by those who were supposed to have loved and protected her the most in life and left to suffer terrible physical and verbal abuse at the hands of two brothers. When he accepted the job Hollis wasn’t expecting for there to be a connection to his past, he also wasn’t prepared to feel a connection with Madeline yet he did. Being taken by Hollis wasn’t how Madeline saw her night going, neither was being held captive by him for days nor the growing attraction she felt towards him, she knew he was dangerous but to her he was the lesser of two evils.
The dislike Hollis had for the people who basically had control of Madeline impacted on his feelings towards her, he wasn’t sure whether or not she could be trusted and tried his hardest to resist the growing attraction he felt towards her, boundaries were crossed however before things went to far it all kicked off, with some surprising revelations.
Just how far do things go? Has Hollis burned his final bridge leaving him with no way back and no chance of making things right with Madeline?
You know what you need to do, get this book one-clicked and read asap, I highly recommend it. Now the wait begins, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in-store next for this band of crazy misfits.
Bridges Burned is the third book in this dark mercenary series. While this book revolves around the mafia, revenge, and has a slow burn between the main couple, there is also a familiar feel to parts of this story. It didn't make me like it any less, but perhaps that will help sort out why I continue to return to the comfort of this familiar world.
There seems to be a recurring theme among these mercenaries; kidnap a woman and then experience remorse while trying to figure out their next move. Yes, Hollis fell into the classic blunder that his fellow co-workers previously did. Silly mercenary. On top of that he swore off ever falling for anyone given his family history and isn't that like waving a red flag in front of a romantic hero. He was going down and going down hard.
Hollis' one goal in life is to take out the man who ruined his family and when he gets the opportunity, regardless of his job, those around him, even his own life, he takes it. He never stopped to think about collateral damage along the way, collateral damage in the form of a beautiful woman named Madelene.
As for the heroine, Madelene may have grown up in the mafia world and known all about the brutality and darkness, but what broke her was that she was eventually sold to the Severino family like a piece of furniture. Engaged to a monster, she is suffocated with the thoughts of her future, but when she's kidnapped by a stranger, it might actually be the escape she never knew she'd get.
Neither Hollis or Madelene know about a healthy relationship or what love really is, but together they understand darkness and that is what I liked about the two of them. They really understood one another and what could be taken away from you in the blink of an eye. Their time together may have built slow, but it was meaningful. Plus....the twist at the end...brilliant.
This is the third in this series, and Bridges Burned has given me another couple of characters I cannot forget. This is both good and bad! hahaha (Read in the correct series order for the best experience.)
From the first chapter to the last, this was a heart-breaking read, with so many difficult and cringe-worthy situations to reconcile. Madelene is terribly abused, by so many people in her life, the worst by her own family, IMHO. There were numerous situations that she should have never faced at the hands of these men, and this author has a writing style that makes it easy to connect with these characters. (I felt SO many emotions in this read.)
Hollis has past traumas that sets him on a collision course with Madelene. While this is ultimately for their benefit, there are tense and dangerous situations ahead for both of them. The chemistry between these two was a bit awkward for me at first, but I understood it better as the story moved along. I enjoyed the interactions between the Mission Mercenaries group, and how this couple reached their HEA.
While I appreciate the dark, violent, and dangerous elements of this read/series, it is ABSOLUTELY not for sensitive readers. Be prepared. Parts of this story line are heartbreaking, evil, twisted, and malicious. I am glad these characters' world exists on paper, and is not in my real life! That said, I appreciate this author's creativity and craftsmanship in bringing me a read that provided me with a great, emotional read.
I do recommend this read, and the numerous other excellent series from this talented author! My free ARC was provided by Booksprout, and I voluntarily leave my review. I cannot wait for the next one in this series.
Bridges Burned is geared towards revenge and retribution. It’s dark, erotic, and suspenseful. Check your trigger warnings before reading.
Hollis spent his childhood losing the people he cared about most. All because of the Severino Family. Death can only come from seeking vengeance against them, so he chose to live in the shadows and live his life as a mercenary to exact revenge for others. Until one job leads him closer than he’s ever been to the family who has ruined his life.
There is where he takes matters into his own hands. Staying away is no longer an option because he won’t have another close opportunity like this one. Simply killing the very man would be too easy of a death, so he takes the his woman. The woman he despises because of her choice in company but soon to realize that she never had a choice at all. Madelene is as much as a victim as the people he lost years ago.
Mads and Hollis’ love story was so deliciously good! Mads deserves a loving and protective man like Hollis to protect her because she has no one else in the world to provide that for her. She has been holding her head high despite all thats she’s been through. She has accepted her cruel fate of being married off to a disgusting man to pay for her father’s crimes, but will wear her mask tight to make it through the cruel life that has become her own. Something Hollis begins to learn as he realizes he judged her way too early.
I finished this book in a matter of two days! So many twist and turns in this story that it will throw you for a loop. The interaction and attraction between Mads and Hollis will get anybody hot and bothered. All I have to say at this point is where can I find myself a Hollis because Mads is one lucky woman to have him to protect, love, and to pay back
Wow, this series just keeps giving!! This is the third book in the Mission Mercenaries Series and is just as dark as the first 2. From the beginning to the end, I was glued. Madelene mourned not only her mother but her brother as well but she had to help save her father and to do that, she was promised to Severino families eldest son. Madi was abused in various ways by not only her fiancé but his brother as well during the time she has been with them. If she fought, she was abused. If she told, she was abused. She had no way out but to honor the deal her father had made and she was only hoping the end would be sooner than later. Hollis just wanted revenge for what Alessio had done to a girl he knew many years ago. The death of Ellie is what he blamed for destroying his family and he has wanted nothing but revenge and he is going to find a way to get it. He follows Marcello, the youngest Severino son, to an alley where he had taken Madelene to get a little one on one time with her alone, and he shot him. Now, it only leaves Alessio to suffer for only a while because he will end his life next but for now let him suffer the agony of losing a brother. Not sure what Madelene’s role in any of this is, he leaves her hoping he doesn’t regret it. Hollis ends up taking Madelene to keep her safe? No, that isn’t really why he took her is it? He craves this woman more than he ever craved another and he has to decide if he is just like the Severino’s and will take what he wants or will he ultimately give Madelene the choice for her to choose what she wants. I love this book and this series is a great read!
This third story in the Mission Mercenaries series is a fast-paced, action-filled, drama-laden tale of revenge. It does have some similarities to book two but at the same time, there are huge differences.
Hollis Ford accepted the ‘not expected to survive’ mission in Mexico at the end of the previous book giving readers a tantalizing tease into this story. The reason behind why he is like he is becomes evident very quickly. I can’t say he’s a gruff cuddly bear—because he isn’t! I can say he has his own set of values and is a loyal friend.
Madelene Lombardi really jumped into my heart from the beginning. My heart was a tad broken when she was with the mafia men but also because of how she ended up there in the first place. When the people you expect to love and protect you throw you under the bus—that hurts deeply.
The intense drama and action in this book make for an exciting and entertaining adventure, especially when surprises pop up with the twists and turns in the plot! I basically began to expect anything and loved every bit of it! After that ending, I know the next book will be just as riveting.

Hollis Ford is a man that lives on the fringes of society and enjoys it. His life has not been easy. He has seen and heard a lot of things that make him very jaded. Madelene’s life has never been her own. She is a pawn in a game. But she is far more observant than those around her give her credit for. When Hollis takes on a very dangerous mission he isn’t expecting to come face to face with the man who ruined his life. But he does. And is hyper focused on it. Madelene is there, too. But she is not who Hollis thinks she is. This duo was so fascinating to me as they haven’t had people in their life that they could trust or rely on but manage to trust each other. Their relationship grows out of proximity, and Hollis tests Madelene, all while she is testing him. It is an interesting dynamic, and yet they are still drawn to one another. Like the other books in this series there are twists and turns that you never see coming, and it is a wild ride! So wild! I love how their lives intersect. And the chemistry and tension between them is written SO.DARN.WELL! This book was so difficult to put down as I couldn’t wait to see where James in store for us and Hollis & Madelene. If you love dark romance with anti heroes that warm your heart and a slow burn romance this book is for you! I am so excited for the rest of the books in this series…of course she gives a big tease at the end!
You have outdone yourself! I love Cerberus, but the Mission Mercenaries are over the top! I love the characters! These men are all on the slightly psychotic side, yet just like Hollis wanting revenge, each has their own reasons for being who they are..yet, women and children are never part of their actions. They save them. They may not know what to do with them, and then the story gets real. Hollis has been waiting for an opportunity to take down the people who destroyed a young girl, her father, which led to the destruction of his family. When the opportunity arises, he doesn't expect to live, however instead he steals the mafia princess bride to be. ! Madeline, mafia princess bride to be, sold by her father for his transgressions. Abused and used, Madeline knows keeping up appearances gives her more time to live, she is expecting death...? When Hollis abducts her she cannot be anything but what she has been taught through fear.. Marie James excels at twists and mayhem. Shocked Madeline seea the dead? Hollis questions all he thinks he is beginning to understand, and then mafia steals Madeline again, and no one is aware... I love how all these men are essentially murders/mercenaries, but somewhere deep in them a woman pulls the good out. Each novel in the series is unique and captivating! Expect the unexpected!

This is a dark romance with possible triggers for some (Please heed the author’s warnings), but this reader found Burning Bridges to be an outstanding addition to the Mission Mercenaries series. This is Hollis’s story and Ms. James did not disappoint me. We learn what drove Hollis to become a hired gun and why he disobeys the orders from his boss when the chance for vengeance drops in his lap. But going in without a well thought out plan doesn’t quite work out like he thought it would and he ends up kidnapping Madelene, the woman he’s supposed to be gathering intel on. This is where things get sticky because Madelene doesn’t act like a mafia princess. Is there more to her story?
This is a very intense storyline that had me in its grasp from the very start. Two broken people that on the outside are complete opposites. Neither know who they can trust or who to believe. There are twists and turns, thrills and chills. I highly recommend Bridges Burned as well as the first two books in this series. Plus with the hint the author leaves us as to what’s fixing to come in book 4 of the series has me anxiously awaiting its arrival.
I was eager to read Hollis's book for a while now and I was in for a surprise. I thought Hollis was a fun loving guy from the glimpse we got in Liam's book. I did not expect him to be so intense. Marie has once again blown my mind with her writing and storyline.
Madelene was an unexpected surprise. She was sweet and docile yet had a fire within her which was subdued. I liked getting to know her and reading her being herself. Hollis may not be actively seeking Vengeance but he still plans to demise of the family that changed his whole life.
Hollis and Madelene meet in very unusual circumstances and end up together in even more weird way. The time they spend together is a bit twisted yet it gives a chance to both of them to admit what they truly want especially to themselves. There chemistry is smoking hot and I liked there games.
My heart broke for both of them and I was rooting for them to finally get together and have all the happiness they deserve. There were some unexpected twists which left me speechless. Getting to know Nash a little bit better was an added bonus. The end again left me desperate for the next book.
There are certain triggers in the read like explicit discription of violence and assault.
Thanks to WildfireMarketing and Marie for an advanced copy.
This book (like this series) is full of entertainment and drama. Although none of the drama is laugh worthy, how the Mercenaries handle each other is nothing but comedic. It’s a brotherhood that consists of nobody liking it and that is hilarious. Hollis was a man on a mission and didn’t care how the consequences went. Mads was just trying to survive the situation she was thrown into and still protect the ones that put her there. The two come together and boom, just an instant connection that they both try to fight for their own reasons, which turned into their own little game. The ending….whew Lawd. Everything happened so fast that I’m still confused about it. It was kinda rushed at the end but could have been a little rushed in the towards the beginning and let the end play out. I’m definitely going to have to reread and see what I missed. Definitely not as hard to read and book 1 of this series, but an emotional one. It’s still very worth it.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
TITLE: Bridges Burned GENRE: Dark Romance AUTHOR: Marie James TROPE: Enemies-to-Lovers, Forced Proximity, Suspense TYPE: Series (Mission Mercenaries Book 3) POV: Dual POV MY RATING: ️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5
Hollis has been offered a job by Mission Mercenaries that will take him closer to finally fulfilling an act of revenge for the brutal death of a close friend. Madelene has had few choices in her life, and due to her dad stealing from the Severino family, she has been bargained away and promised to marry the oldest son in the family. Madi has had to endure mind games and punishments at the hands of her fiancé and his brother, who also seems intent on claiming her until she crosses paths with Hollis.
Burned Bridges was another quick read but enjoyable; it is a dark romance to check trigger warnings before reading any of the books in this series. Even though Hollis is morally grey, he has some redeeming qualities, in his own messed up way, more than the MCs in the first two books in the series. I am giving a rating of 4 / 5 Stars.
This is the third book in the Mission Mercenaries series, it is Hollis and Madeline’s story told in dual POV.
Hollis’ childhood was normal until tragedy struck and his young life was torn apart. Now as a man, he tends to stay in the shadows where he is comfortable with his hatred using it for the missions he takes working for Angel. When a job comes up, Hollis never would have thought his past would be where it shouldn’t be and that his future was hanging off its arm.
All Madeline has ever wanted was the chance to choose her own destiny. Her life was laid out before she could even walk. When her father screws over the wrong men, he selfishly makes a bargain with them…Madeline.
Hollis and Mads have this strange connection from their very first, unconventional, meeting. Neither trust their feelings or each other.
I completely enjoyed watching their story/relationship grow. It’s twisted, dark and steamy.
Thank you Ms. James for another amazing story! I can not wait for the next…that ending has me on the edge of my seat!
Marie James Mission Mercenaries series really makes my dark & twisty soul sing, but I promise they're really on the darker side so there are triggers. It's the story of Hollis, a mercenary with a new job that he's happy to take despite any danger of death as a possibility, but this time, he's going to get more than he bargained for when he ends up with Madelene as a hostage along the way. Let me tell you, revenge is the name of this game, and it's intense & all consuming which I totally understood. There are tons of twists that kept my head spinning, tons of angst as Madelene has a new jailer & what she came from, and she's not about to lie down & take it or is she?! The close proximity has the sparks flying though, so there comes a point when that fine line between love & hate totally disappears, but those twists coming in hot will make things more dangerous as they start to build something. I LOVED every minute of this insanely dark ride, and I certainly CANNOT WAIT for more so I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Hollis has dedicated his life to serving justice to those who harm others. Sure, he isn't necessarily on the right side of the law, but if the bad guys are dealt with, does the legality really matter?
When he has the chance for revenge against the man who ruined his childhood and scarred his life, he sees it as a golden opportunity. If there is collateral damage along the way, well, that's just part of it. What he didn't expect was to fall for said collateral damage.
Madelene has never had an easy life and it was made worse when she was promised to a horrible man with no choice in the matter. She knows once her usefulness has worn off, that her time will come to an end.
She never thought her saving grave would come from a man who took her as part of his revenge plan.
Can a woman who thought she had no future really find one with the man who unknowingly saved her from a dark fate?
