She’s totally off limits…and she’s also kind of mean. He wants her anyway.
Doug Rogers has it all planned out. He just needs to teach summer school and be the TA for one tiny class at the nearby university and Doug can pay for his masters in education. Hard work, big rewards, right?
But he wasn’t planning on Amy Peterson. The almost-nurse in his comp class seems mad at the world, and particularly mad at Doug. She’s one class away from her nursing degree after five long years of hard work, and she doesn’t have the time or the patience for her optimistic instructor. The more he tries to talk to her, the more he seems to shove his foot in his mouth.
When a work accident brings Doug to the emergency room, he sees Amy in action and knows he’s a goner for her. Will he ever win her over? Should he even be thinking this way about an undergrad?
Lesson Plans: An Education in Romance is a steamy prequel to the Stag Brothers series and the Bridges and Bitters series. Readers have loved Doug and Amy from the sidelines in both series. See how their story begins in this novella.
Lesson Plans originally appeared in Happily Ever Afters for Hope, a charity anthology to benefit UNICEF efforts in Ukraine.
[7/77] ⤷ this is book 7 of 77 books i have downloaded for free on amazon kindle, so it may be time to finally go through them all. oh god, wish me luck.
i dislike the male love interest; he was annoying and a dork, and for the life of me, i do not want to imaginw his toes in flip flops. please spare me. a book that has a mc like that has barely any hope for convincing me of its greatness.
I met Doug in book 1 of the Bridge and Bitter series of AJ & Sam. It was fun to read this novella where we get to experience how he meets Amy. Relatable characters... it feels like Davis really researches the careers her characters hold so there is nothing to pull you out of the story.
Both Doug and Amy are doing hard jobs - Middle School Teacher (!!) Those most awkward years. And a Trauma Nurse! Bless for writing real people... sick of the billionaire troupes. This is refreshing.
Amy the student who says what she wants & how she feels secretly falls for her summer school teacher at college while taking the last course she needs to become a registered nurse. Doug, her teacher is intrigued by her from the start. He sure changed his lesson plans.
Great quick read with a lot packed in, for how short it was it felt like I'd read a full book. Loved both Amy and Doug, they make the perfect couple. If you want a quick easy read this is it.
I loved this story. These characters are young (23). Having come from an insulated, privileged background Doug, a student teacher, is still learning about real life and he's a little bit intimidated by it. Until now he's been oblivious to how tenuous a person's security can be. Amy, a student nurse, comes into his life and his classroom and he admires her scrappiness. She's had a hard time in the past few years and hasn't been living the life that most NAs get to live. She's doing all she can to keep her family intact and above water after her mom passed away and left them with significant medical debt. Doug is very interested in Amy, and Amy feels a pull toward Doug too but she pushes it down because her family's needs come first. Besides, they can't be together as long as they have a student/teacher relationship.
This little prequel talks a lot about the state of medical care in this country—the costs, the insurance hassles, the personnel stretched thin, the cold impersonal policies. It talks about the role of teachers too—the power dynamics and how they should meet their students where they're at. Shaping them socially as well as academically and weighing what to focus on at any given point in time.
As I said, I loved this story and I relate to Amy in more ways than one. I don't agree with the reviewer who said this was poorly written. A lot was said in this novella and because it's not a full novel it had to be written efficiently and effectively—and it was. I truly understood these characters and cared about them. I wish I could read more about their romance specifically and not just as side characters in subsequent books. But that's okay, I enjoyed this story immensely the way it is and got much more out of it than I would from a surface romance.
Lesson Plans by Lainey Davis I bought this book. I have not read this author before. I wanted something short and sweet so I could get a sample of her writing. I grabbed this book off her website for a couple bucks when I had a free afternoon to read. The characters in the story are older and I love this. Amy isn’t a fresh faced college co-ed finishing her nursing degree. Doug isn’t an old professor. He too is finishing his degree. The two meet and there is some attraction, but hello teacher/student romance would be frowned upon. Doug is going out of his way to help Amy with her studies for sure and she is kinda stuck in a pity party about missing classes. When Doug is at the ER and he sees Amy he kinda calls her on her stuff. He wants to know why she is blowing off school. I liked the couple. They both had realistic real-life issues and concerns. Being a person who went back to school in my late 30’s I get the issues of life stopping your dream/drive to finish something. I enjoyed the book and am looking for another short read by this author to fill in another few hours this evening.
Lesson Plans An Education in Romance By: Author Lainey Davis Narrated by: Nikola Mučkajev, Amber Battaglia
I love having short listens in between my long ones and this one is on Spotify! Lainey Davis is a favorite of mine and her writing style is easy to listen to with wonderful characters. This novella is for Doug and Amy. Doug is becoming a middle school teacher and Amy is on her way to being a registered nurse. Their paths cross as Doug is a teacher for the last course she needs before she graduates.LIttle did they know the impact they would have on each other. This is a fun, low angst romance, sure to warm the heart and make you feel good!
Nikola Muckajev and Amber Battaglia bring it all alive with a wonderful performance. They capture their characters perfectly and make us root for their happiness!
Prequel: just as wonderful as the following series, even if a bit short. Amy and Doug can be met as a couple with their sons in the Stag Family series and in Bridges and Bitters. This is their own love story with all the twists and turns of a young couple finding their way together. Like in the other series this book is fast paced with a strong heroine and an adorable clumsy hero. Funny dialogues and situations. Must read to make the combined series complete!
She needs one class to become a nurse, he’s the teacher. She’s stressed and misses classes, he is attracted but needs her to come to class. They work hard to get her the grade she needs and then he can become a real teacher. She finds him after class is over and their attraction becomes a relationship
Cute story! This is how Amy and Doug meet; she’s trying to finish a class for her BSN certificate and work as a certified nurse. Doug happens to be the teacher of said class. Things are not off to a good start, as Amy works at the hospital and rushes to evening classes. They end up liking each other but student, teacher relationship keeps them apart. Read and find out how their story ends.
This book had me when I started and just got better. I love that Amy is so fiery, she is what most women really are like. Doug is wonderful to have come from such a sad family. I am going to like reading more about Doug and Amy. Thank you I really enjoyed this story.
It’s advertised as a kinda prequel story of side characters in different books of the author, so now I’ll probably habe to read those stories as well. 😉
I didn’t care for this. The characters are mechanical. They’re supposed really into each other, but they don’t actually know each other. It’s also preachy(I agree with the sentiments, but I read to escape).
Doug and Amy are way too cute of a couple. I mean, they are both actually really sweet and fun. Although, Amy is a little bit rougher around the edges than Doug. But, I do love prickly women with a heart of gold.
This might be a teacher, student romance. But it does have a slight twist. It played into the trope, without being so forbidden and, well, icky. I also love how they're both finding their feet throughout the short course Doug teaches.
Doug learning about his privilege and being willing to understand and change because of this was amazing. I seriously wish more people were willing to recognise their privilege and see how it influences everything we say and do. The growth of him during this novella was amazing.
Amy is a fairly angry and feisty lead. But, I completely understand why. And I loved that she is also able to enjoy life and the moment when she needs to. They’re a fantastic couple and I can't wait to spend more time with them as secondary characters.
