"Shows us how psychedelics can transform mental health and enhance the way we live."—Sara Gottfried MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure
This practical guide to psychedelics will appeal to anyone interested in their own health and "A captivating read that shares how society can use psychedelics to transform the way we exist in the world."—Robin Divine, psychedelic advocate and creator of Black People Trip
Once feared and misunderstood, psychedelics have emerged as one of the most promising therapies of the 21st century. Through cutting-edge research, substances such as MDMA and LSD are being recognized as powerful keys to healing and human improvement, offering solutions for mental health issues including PTSD and depression. Similarly, plant medicines like ayahuasca, peyote, and iboga, used since time immemorial by Indigenous cultures for spiritual purposes, have been shown to promote feelings of empathy, connection, and love for the self, others, and the world around us.
But how can everyday people benefit from psychedelics? And will they really transform healthcare as we know it?
In Psyched, health journalist Amanda Siebert explores the history, culture, and potential of seven psychedelic substances. She interweaves real-life stories, clinical research, and interviews with the world’s leading psychedelics experts and cultural allies to offer a definitive guide to these cutting-edge treatments.
I loved that this book features interviews with reputed scientific experts without trying to oversimplify the science into "bro" platitudes and preserving the nuance and mystery behind what we are still trying to understand. Amanda Siebert does a good job of portraying what we know about the map in simple understandable language without trying to pretend that we truly know the territory. She does a wonderful job of interspersing personal stories in celebration of these medicines while heeding their responsible usage and potential drawbacks. This is a great introductory book for anyone that wishes to understand more about this lifechanging field, to learn where to dive deeper.
My first experience with psychedelics was using ibogaine to treat severe PTSD. After the symptoms were completely gone, I wanted to learn more. Psyched is very informative and a great “beginner” read on this topic. I’d recommend following it with the book “how to change your mind.” I’ve recommended this book to many who have wanted to understand my experience and I’d recommend to anyone curious about the world of psychedelics.
This book is a helpful resource to learn more about psychedelics. The author efficiently educates the reader on each psychedelic’s history, science, studies, modern use, potential use, and more. I highly recommend this book! Quick read and easy to understand.
Perfunctory review of the main psychedelics, with sections on historical and medical use cases, but no consistent detailed descriptions of their effects. One is bettered served reading the more personal and biased “how to change your mind”
Interesting exploration though I wish it had been organised differently… a brief introduction and overview of each drug then followed by discussions organsied thematically: i.e. end-of-life anxiety, depression and anxiety, alcohol dependency, and pain, etc.
Well structured intro with cases, modern history, current research and their (Classics, Empathogen, Dissociative) potentials in well-being. Accessible to all level of audience.
Majority of this explored the political aspects of psychedelics, not so much the science or applicational use of them in medicine. It missed the mark for me.
