My wife got me this for our anniversary a while back. It's not my favorite Doom Patrol run but it has its moments. It feels like a cover of Grant Morrison's greatest hits at times. Nick Derington's art is great and Doc Shaner and Mike Allred each do a guest issue. Fun stuff but I doubt I'll want to read it a second time.

Gerard Way and Nick Derington’s Doom Patrol starts off as ambitiously as Grant Morrison’s, and arguably with better illustrations. They build a dreamscape mountain of expectations, exciting new characters, and innovative plot threads, but midway I found myself upside down in the rubble, trying to find my bearings.

At first fairly linear and easy to follow, the story began to lurch and “light speed skip” ahead—characters morphing and shifting without explanation in an unfollowable way. Like most DP runs, this will require a reread to fully grasp what’s happening. And I think, at least on my initial read, that this run falters under its own ambition. But unlike GM’s run that faltered the ending, this falters in the middle.

When this series was announced I was ready to go to war with Gerard Way.
That is how much the Grant Morrison run from the 90s meant to me.
I was STUNNED by how good this was.
Way is a natural story teller and his grasp of the sheer weirdness of The Doom Patrol.
This series is the natural successor to the weirdest damn comic book ever.
I loved it.

2.5

I like the art a lot (it got an extra .5 for the art). The stories are odd but not in the meaningful way that Morrison’s were. This volume feels scattered and often disconnected, like the ideas are there but not the right connective tissue? Actually even the ideas/themes feel trite/under developed. I would have guessed that the Young Animal imprint meant it was aimed for a younger audience based on the writing in this series but Wikipedia said it was supposed to be for a more mature audience. Hmm. It’s just kind of a mess and not in a good way.

I’m no idiot, and I know that every person’s reading experience is colored by their circumstances surrounding the reading of their text of choice. I also know that I received the entire 12 issue collection of Gerard Way’s run of Doom Patrol from a very nice man running a Free Comics stall in a park in Scotland. So, I was already bent toward liking this series.

Current projects have tempted me to turn away from the superhero genre, due to trite patterns with repetitive character beats. But, from the scattered set-up to the varied and interesting ensemble of main characters, Doom Patrol is a type of cozy romp that I haven’t experienced since watching Knives Out and Grand Budapest Hotel for the first time. And then, Way runs his ever-weaving character web parallel to a wacky, don’t-ask-don’t-tell style plot that is terminally enthralling from the first page to the last. All this to say, Way’s Doom Patrol is a piece of almost impressionistic superhero media I won’t soon forget.

So, even outside of the already colorful story behind how I got this collection in the first place- I fear was always going to like Doom Patrol. The only reason i rated it 4/5 is because I can’t do 4.75/5, and I feel like this arc missing something small to put it over the edge to five for me. I’m no critic, and I can’t say exactly what that is, I just have to acknowledge it’s there.

I cannot recommend Doom Patrol enough. I haven’t torn through a series like this in a long time, and I don’t think I will again soon either.

This entire collection is a celebration of the Doom Patrol, unapologetically inspired by the famous Morrison’s run, and I’m all for it!

Some knowledge of Doom Patrol’s history is required to fully understand the storyline and recognize the magic of this book, but to me that’s just another reason why I ended up appreciating this run so much.

There are three main story arcs featured here, all with insane narratives and creative choices. The art matches that tempo and it’s absolutely spectacular! There’s so much visual greatness happening on every panel and there are plenty of charming little details to be found in the background, as well. It’s all uniquely heartwarming and whimsical, with only a few misses.

For example, some of the darker themes of the Doom Patrol weren’t explored much, which I feel was a consequence of having a short/limited run as there were definitely elements of it present in the story. Though even rushed, such moments did add weight to the characters, especially the original cast.

Of the new characters, Casey in particular was a great addition to the team. Others were less memorable but a good fit for the story, with my only issue being Lotion: Casey’s cat-turned-human (don’t ask) who was such a throwaway character but one that the author refused to throw away for some reason. Literally added nothing to the story… (Larry’s new dog was a much better character and he was only ever barking in the background!)

But even with these couple of gripes, I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this comic. I’m pretty sure I actually love this book, as it’s definitely something I now cherish.

I only wish this collection had included the two cross-over issues featuring Doom Patrol from the comic book event called Milk Wars (again, it’s better not to ask…). Without them there’s a narrative gap between the second and the final story arc of this book, and it’s such a shame that this otherwise-perfect collection feels incomplete because of it.

-Prefiero estar vacío a estar lleno de mierda...

Gerard Way además de con su grupo MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE darnos épicas canciones ( Helena, Welcome to the Black parade, Teenegers, I don`t love you, Na na na..)

A book that feels weird for the sake of being weird. Largely lackluster with issues that start and end in irrelevant and pointless ways.

Characters disappear only to reappear when they're most needed, they're given new abilities that never become relevant, many of them exist just as oddities rather than to add anything to the narrative.

From Lotion to Terry to Lucius and Fugg, very few of the new characters seem to do anything at all. It just doesn't work for me.

It may not be Morrison/Pollack, but it comes very close.
I really wish there was another arc.
I also hate that ‘doom patrol by Gerard Way & Nick Derington’ is missing two important issues by Gerard Way, the latter of which has art by Nick Derington, but still includes the guest issue #5 (by Becky Cloonan, who was gonna be the original artist on it before Young Animal happened.)

Dare I say, Gerard Way’s run feels more poignant than Morrison’s—a statement I never thought I would make. Fans of the Doom Patrol tv show will discover much of the show’s tone in its strongest seasons parallels the tone in this volume. Of the books I read in 2025, this is one of my favorites.

All the wackiness of Morrison without any of the pathos. I thought Gerard Way would be the perfect person to take on the mantle based on his work on Umbrella Academy but it's decidedly missing something that made Morrison's work.
