Inspiring children's biography of Amy a missionary who shared Christ’s love with hundreds of women and children in Asia.
At a time when being a single female missionary was extremely costly, Amy Carmichael spent her life sharing Christ’s love with hundreds of women and children in Asia. Along the way, she adapted to fit into cultures very different from her own, learned to depend on God in prayer, and became a mother to many children who had been sold, kidnaped, outcast, or abandoned.
Her inspiring resolve to follow Christ and her sincere commitment to his word make her a great role model for young children and will enthuse them about the great things they can do for God too.
This beautiful hardback book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos. It makes a beautiful gift for children aged 4-7.
In reading the story of Amy Carmichael, kids are exposed to the truth that God is entirely trustworthy. Even when things don’t make sense, we can pray for our needs and God will do great things. Our job is to trust and obey. The way Amy did this was to walk in obedience to do the next right thing in front of her, which led her to spend her life serving in India and teaching the Gospel and showing people the love of Christ. A wonderful picture to kids of what it looks like to trust God with every aspect of life; and that trusting Him is SAFE!
Thank you to The Good Book Company for a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.
“A small book about a big heart. Amy’s life shines in striking contrast to our era of self-love. Turn these pages with your kids and glimpse what life is all about.”
Very good introduction to Amy Carmichael. Cute and simple illustrations. Good summary of her life. Well written. I'm excited to bring this back when my kid is a little bit older. It was hard for my 22 month old to sit through this. But I don't think that's a reflection of the book, just the age-appropriateness.
This new installment in the Do Great Things for God series features Amy Carmichael, a famous missionary who served in India for many years and adopted children from desperate situations. I enjoyed learning about Amy Carmichael when I was in elementary school, and this picture book biography is a great introduction for today's children, with simple text from Hunter Beless and colorful, expressive illustrations from Héloïse Mab. The book covers multiple aspects of Carmichael's life and ministry, and it emphasizes her prayer life and her choice to dress like the people she ministered to and adapt to their cultures.
At the end, the book includes a historic photograph of Carmichael with some of the children she cared for. There is also a timeline, a map, and an advertisement for the free activity sheets that adults can download from the publisher's website to use with children. This book is informative and inspiring, and it is entirely age-appropriate. Beless is vague about the situations Carmichael rescued children from, simply saying that they were "sold, kidnapped, and abandoned." The book does not refer to temple prostitution or any of the other violent histories many of these children faced.
I would highly recommend this book to families, churches, and Christian schools. It shares great historical information and is very inspirational, and it gives a thorough sense of Carmichael's life while still being short and simple enough for young readers. This will appeal to kids who are old enough to read the book independently, and parents can also read it aloud to younger children. The activities are appropriate for use at home, church, or educational settings, and can deepen the book's impact by inviting further reflection and study.
I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Amy Carmichael’s biography is an excellent addition to a beloved series in our household. Amy’s mission work is inspiring and she was a strong woman of faith, leaving behind a strong legacy and testimony. This story is easy to read and understand, even for the youngest minds and demonstrates though Amy’s story, how God can begin to work in our hearts and lives at a young age. My Kindergarten-aged daughter and I loved the concept of Amy’s “Ask and Receive” prayer journal and as a takeaway from this story, it is something we want to implement in our lives as well.
I found this book to have darling illustrations, simple words and a strong faith-based message. It is inspiring, uplifting and encouraging. As always, I love that this series includes a photograph of Amy Carmichael and a timeline of the important milestones in her life. We also enjoyed looking at the two page map of where she traveled and ministered plus were very excited about the additional resources page that offered free downloads from the publisher to accompany this story!
* I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts below are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
God does great things through those who pray. In the newest entry of the Do Great Things For God series, Hunter Beless shares the story of Amy Carmichael: The Brown-Eyed Girl Who Learned to Pray.
Meant for children ages 4-7, this is the perfect book to spark interest in spiritual biographies. Carmichael’s love for women and children in Asia is extraordinary. Beless brings the story to life with charm and wonder. The biographical timeline and historical photos at the back of the book are a plus.
God Does Great Things Through Those Who Pray
The illustrations by Héloïse Mab help bring to life the different cultural boundaries Carmichael had to cross. They are vibrant and inspiring, invoking an exciting life of missionary work.
The story emphasizes her dependence on prayer, and how God was with her every step of the way. Read this book and help your children see that God does great things through those who pray.
I received a media copy of Amy Carmichael and this is my honest review.
As humans, we are born to crave heroes, role models to which we can aspire. From the media to magazines to movies, we are assaulted with examples to emulate. But spiritual heroines can prove more difficult to discover. You never know what’s in a person until you tip them over and see what spills out. The Goodbook for Children’s Do Great Things for God series is an invitation to a literary tea party of godly women! Amy Carmichael (1867-1951) embodied 1 Corinthians 13:13, “The greatest of these is love.” Each charmingly illustrated mini-biography includes a photograph, memory verse, timeline, map, discussion questions, and interactive worksheet pages for use at home or classroom, and each heroine reminds readers of all ages that God makes a way for those He calls. This collection of small books with big hearts is the perfect way to bring the Hebrews 11 “hall of faith” to your bookshelf.
Amy Carmichael grew up in Ireland and had learned about Jesus from a very young age. As she grew, the Lord led her to serve as a missionary to Japan, Sri Lanka, and then India. In each country she endeavored to be able to share about Jesus to others, ultimately becoming a mother to many orphaned children in Dohnavur, a small village in India.
This biography tells of Amy's life and also gives an example of how prayer works through Amy's prayer for blue eyes. Her zeal for sharing the Gospel is also evident as she lived in each place trying to identify with the people as much as possible, particularly in how she dressed. These are clear messages for young readers and easy to understand.
Part of a series of illustrated biographies that introduce readers to godly women of the past, this one tells the story of a woman who learned to pray and realized how much God loved her through the song “Jesus loves me.” She read of the need to “go” (Matthew 28:19) and go she did to Japan and India and beyond sharing the love of Christ. Recommended for pointing children toward a vision of global missions for the sake of the gospel. Includes discussion questions, a timeline of her life, and a world map highlighting where she lived. Ages 4+.
Many of these do great things for God women I've never heard of but I am just as caught up (if not more so) as my kids in the story! God convicts me as I read of the faithfulness of His servants and I'm inspired to be faithful in my own life! Amy Carmichael is no exception! Love learning about her story of faithfulness and how the Lord used her! Excited to add this one to our collection, planning on collecting them all!
A picture book biography of Irish missionary to Japan and then India, Amy Carmichael.
A splendid little introduction to Amy Carmichael for young readers. I like the parts of her life they highlighted, which included her doing little things for those in her hometown as well as those far away. A good example for young Christ followers wherever God calls them. There's a timeline in the back of the book with a bit more information on her work.
I cannot get enough of this series! Every book in this series is incredibly written and beautifully illustrated. I love that the text is written in a way that is easy for children to understand, and gets to the basic timeline of each person‘s life. As a homeschooler, the extra resources and learning materials included are a huge blessing! You cannot go wrong with any book in the series!
A lovely children’s biography about the life and ministry of Amy Carmichael, containing lively illustrations and engaging text. I like that the end matter includes reading questions, a timeline, a map of the places she lived, as well as free downloadable project pages!
Flow is a little choppy, but the book covers the life of one busy woman! Im really excited to gift this book to my daughter for her fifth birthday, and I want to purchase more books in the series. The questions, map, timeline, and other resources at the end of the book are an excellent addition.
This lovely picture book introduces children to the true story of Amy Carmichael who was a missionary. She lived from 1867-1951. It also addresses prayer and what Amy learned about prayer. I really loved the lesson on prayer and how God answers our prayers in the way the He knows best. It is not always how we would have them be, but He is good and brings about His good purposes for His glory and good of His people.
There are reflection questions at the end of the book and also a link to free resources for worksheets to further understanding.
This book would make a lovely gift especially for little girls! These books are a great homeschooling resource too.
