This is an interesting story by Mr. Manx which very much reads like a Twilight Zone episode.

There are many fears about AI and the advancement of technology. From stories like the classic I, Robot to the movies like Terminator, the one universal fear that comes to the fore is that we, the human race, are flawed. We have always been the smartest animal on the planet (for fuck’s sake, let’s not start a deep philosophical argument here) and have enjoyed the superior intellect (again, not now). There has not been anything or anyone who could exploit our weaknesses, other than fellow homo sapiens.

So what happens if someone (or something) comes along to dethrone us? Like a lion who kills a human must be put down, what if there were someone who could judge us the same way? We are certainly the cruelest and sickest of all the animals on this planet. Not to mention the laziest and, at times, the dumbest (Jackass – I have nothing more to say on the subject). Will we stand a chance if there is a reckoning?

Well, now that I have diverted your attention, I’m going to do a slight of hand and tell you this story is less about technology and more about the flaws of humanity. There is a warning in this tale, but not what you might think.

Paul Davis likes new things, clothes, cars, women…. He likes to have the latest in technology too, and when all these things come together, it's not always a good thing! Can a smart car be too smart? Is this a case of auto revenge? Does Paul, who likes to be in control, lose any control he has? Is there a chance at redemption? Can he redeem himself before it's too late?

A terrifying look at the world we live in today, the need for everything to be new, instant, and done for you! How technology seems to be advancing whilst we are retreating into ourselves….

This was a good, creepy, short read, that didn't feel like a short read, and that gave me hints of Christine and Maximum Overdrive! I loved it!

Paul Davis is a rather distinguished man. He loves the finer things in life. Fancy cars, new clothes, new toys, and new women. The main problem is Paul is a married man with a child on the way yet that doesn’t seem to be enough to change his cheating ways. Perhaps his new 2023 Lexus LC 500 and state-of-the-art Ferdinand can turn things around.

This was highly enjoyable and very creepy at the same time. The storyline is gripping, which instantly gives a feel for the kind of guy Paul really is. I immediately despised him. When his navigation system starts glitching out, things really get interesting, and Paul learns a lesson in humility. Will this change him, though? Technology has its ups and downs, and, in this case, I’d want to pass. As much as things have advanced it’s not always a good thing, and that is reflected in this story. Maybe I shouldn’t say it wasn’t a good thing because it certainly opened Paul’s eyes.

I loved the idea of this short reading like an episode from the Twilight Zone. I’m a fan of that show and would love to see Manx come up with more of these. Very clever!
