An informative read, but one that's probably not overly useful to anyone who isn't interested in researching and seeking out seemingly obscure ingredients. Some of the instructions are deeply concerning to me (do NOT ever put glass jars under your mattress or pillow because sooner or later you'll get a poorly made one and someone'll get hurt), and there's quite a few typos in the book that have the potential to irritate.

Avril le Roux’s “The Jar Spells Compendium” can be summed up in a single question: why?

The self published effort provides a collection of Witch Bottle recipes, boasting it “will guide you in creating new recipes and understanding the fundamentals of harnessing magic and elevating your creative energy.”

Each recipe is given a title, a brief explanation of what it does, a list of ingredients, followed by assembly instructions and suggestions on where to put the bottle.

There are some positives to the book — for example, each recipe list, how difficult it is, and how long it takes to assemble. The recipes are also easy to read and follow.

However, the actual writing is haphazard and sloppy. The instructions will call for items not given in the ingredient list, le Roux’s grasp of both history and Witchcraft itself is questionable at best and she can’t seem to decide if she’s writing about bottles, potions or jars.

There’s no explanation for why she throws together certain ingredients, and very often she won’t specify, the amount of ingredients to use. She will recommend carrying the bottles with you or putting them under your pillow even if they would be ridiculously big or unwieldy. Most of recipes are poorly thought out, impractical or expensive. Numerous mistakes also litter the text—ingredients listed wrong, descriptions not matching their spell’s name, missing or extra words, etc.

In total, I liked two recipes out of all of them. Most of my time was spent asking “Why would you do that?” or “Why does the author believe this?” Hard pass.

Iffy at best. Some protection spells read like a curse on the “protected”. Advocates for white sage and palo santo without a second thought.

Nothing to explain how spell jars function or even why a certain spell might work, but has entire section devoted to Wicca vs paganism and a whole other chapter devoted to the inquisition. What?

Either this author is woefully ignorant, stealing spells they don’t understand off the internet or doing random workings on the people purchasing the book.

Not even fun read. Thankfully very short.
